Chapter no 73 – PLANS HAVE CHANGED

A Soul of Ash and Blood (A Blood and Ash Book 5)

I made use of the chamber Poppy had originally been placed in to bathe and change into fresh clothing. The water was fucking freezing, but I didnโ€™t want to return to her covered in blood and smelling like death. Hair damp, I stepped back into the hall. Kieran was waiting outside.

He hadnโ€™t been earlier. โ€œSheโ€™s likely asleep again.โ€ โ€œAgain?โ€

โ€œShe fell asleep while bathing,โ€ he answered.

โ€œYou woke her from aย bath?โ€ My eyes narrowed.

โ€œShe was in there for quite some time. I called out to her more than

once,โ€ he explained. โ€œWhen she didnโ€™t answer, I figured I should check on her.โ€

โ€œHow did she handle your intrusion?โ€

A small smile appeared. โ€œShe said that among her people, it was impolite to stare.โ€

I faced him. โ€œAnd were you staring?โ€

His smile kicked up a notch. That wasโ€ฆinteresting. โ€œA little.โ€ His eyes met mine. โ€œI saw her scars. Some of them.โ€

I tensed, though not because heโ€™d obviously been staring more than just a little. Anyone else? Theyโ€™d already be dead. But I knew she was self-

conscious of those scars.

โ€œI told her that among my people, scars are never hidden,โ€ Kieran continued. โ€œThat they are always honored.โ€

I relaxed. Poppyโ€ฆshe needed to hear that. Know that. โ€œYouโ€™re lucky she had no weapon on her.โ€

Kieran snorted. โ€œBefore her nap, she asked some questions about Atlantia.โ€

โ€œI imagine she did.โ€ I glanced at the closed door. โ€œI told her I was taking her home. To Atlantia.โ€

One eyebrow rose. โ€œIs that a part of the plan Iโ€™m not supposed to worry about? Because I am.โ€

I went to stand beside him. โ€œI plan to marry her.โ€

Kieran slowly turned his head to me. A moment passed, his expression remaining unreadable. โ€œIs that so?โ€

I nodded. โ€œWhat happened to her in that cell wonโ€™t happen again if she is my wife. It offers her protection.โ€

The other eyebrow rose.

โ€œAnd with her as my wife, the threat of us tearing down all their lies

becomes more real. After all, if the gods have forsaken the Atlantians as the Ascended claim, then surely the Chosenโ€”the child of the godsโ€”would not be able to marry one. Itโ€™s more likely the Blood Crown will release my brother.โ€

Another moment passed. โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œAnd once Malik is free, Poppy will be free of me.โ€ I lifted my chin. โ€œI told you that I care about her, so I have no intention of forcing her to remain married to someone she hates.โ€

โ€œSomeone she hates?โ€ Kieran repeated, one side of his lips curling up. โ€œWhen you went to bring her back to the keep, you were with her. I know you were. I smelled you on her.โ€

โ€œJust because sheโ€™s attracted to me doesnโ€™t mean she would want to remain married to the man who kidnapped her.โ€

โ€œOr set her free,โ€ he said, to which I frowned. โ€œThatโ€™s a different way to look at what youโ€™ve done, isnโ€™t it? Set her free.โ€

Watching the snow fall, I supposed that was a lovely revisionist version of how weโ€™d gotten to this point. โ€œI killed those sheโ€™s cared about, both directly and indirectly. I donโ€™t expect nor seek her forgiveness, Kieran. We will not remain husband and wife.โ€

โ€œIf you say so.โ€

โ€œI know so.โ€ The back of my neck prickled again, stronger than before. Kieran watched me, head tilted. โ€œYouโ€™ve been doing that a lot of late.โ€ โ€œDoing what?โ€

โ€œRubbing the back of your neck.โ€

I was? My hand was on the nape of my neck, so yeah, Iโ€™d been doing that. โ€œThink I pulled a muscle.โ€

Kieran snorted.

โ€œWhat? Like thatโ€™s not possible?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ He looked away. โ€œYou really think Alastir wonโ€™t see through this ploy? Your father?โ€

โ€œWell, for starters, I plan to be gone before he gets here. If the snow ends. Weโ€™ll leave in the morning if possible. Either way, they wonโ€™t see through thisโ€”if Iโ€™m convincing enough,โ€ I told him. โ€œWhich I plan to be.โ€

Kieranโ€™s eyes narrowed on me. โ€œPlease tell me youโ€™re going to tell her about these plans. That youโ€™re notโ€”โ€

โ€œI will announce to those here that we are to marry. That is only to ensure her safety while weโ€™re here.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s smart.โ€

โ€œBut she is no longer a pawn, Kieran. She will be fully aware of this ploy,โ€ I swore.

โ€œAnd if she doesnโ€™t agree to it?โ€

I exhaled heavily. โ€œIf she doesnโ€™t, then Iโ€ฆI wonโ€™t force her. And I know what that means, what I will be choosing,โ€ I said before Kieran could. โ€œBut I will just have to convince Poppy to go along with this.โ€

Kieran choked on a laugh, and I couldnโ€™t help but smile. โ€œBy the way,โ€ he said, โ€œyour plan isโ€ฆinsane.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ I followed his gaze to the snow. โ€œBut not only will it work, itโ€™s the least I can do for her.โ€

Kieran was silent for several heartbeats. โ€œBut will it be enough?โ€

I knew what he meant. It was something I hadnโ€™t allowed myself to dwell on. Freeing Malik took priority, but bringing him home wouldnโ€™t fix everything in Atlantia, not with us running out of land. Our people had strengthened in the years since the war, replacing the numbers weโ€™d lost and then some. That was good, except it wasnโ€™t. We were running out of territory, and in the not-too-distant future, resources would become limited. If we didnโ€™t expand beyond Spessaโ€™s End, the future of Atlantia would be a troubled one. And besides that, would Malik be ready to take the crown?

My chest hollowed as my throat dried. Heโ€™d be fine. Eventually. I would be there to help him. Our parents. Kieran and everyone else. Heโ€™d just need time.

โ€œNone of Atlantiaโ€™s struggles are Poppyโ€™s,โ€ I said. โ€œShe is not to be burdened with them.โ€

โ€œA Princess who is to remain unburdened by the plight of her kingdom?โ€ Kieran murmured.

โ€œA Princess in name only,โ€ I reminded him.

He turned, angling his body toward mine. โ€œIf she goes along with this, that means a part of her accepts the truth about the Ascended, and I donโ€™t know her all that well, but you do. Do you think she will be satisfied with just freedom? While the Ascended continue on?โ€ he asked. โ€œWill she be

able to remain unburdened?โ€

That was a damn good question. One I didnโ€™t have an answer to.

I stepped back. โ€œItโ€™s almost time for supper. Iโ€™m sure sheโ€™s hungry.โ€ Kieran nodded, his lips curving into a faint smile as he looked away.

โ€œIโ€™ll be waiting.โ€

Turning, I crossed the hall and entered my chamber, closing the door behind me.

I didnโ€™t make it far at first. I saw her curled on her side, the dark crimson strands of her hair spread across the pillow. The sight of her seemed to rob me of the ability to move.

Sounded fucking silly as hell, but I had to will myself to take a step. I went to her side and sat on the edge of the bed. The movement didnโ€™t wake her. I hadnโ€™t taken that much blood from her, but sheโ€™d been through a lot. She was exhausted, but she needed to eat.

And if I told her about my plans before then? She likely wouldnโ€™t

consume a single bite. She would be mad at me by the end of supper, but I preferred her anger over her being harmed. Besides, I always found myself somewhat bemused by her ire.

There was likely something wrong with me.

I reached over, brushing her hair back from her neck. The two puncture wounds caused a visceral reaction. The sudden, sharp pulse of lust was damn strong. I couldnโ€™t remember ever reacting that way to the sight of my bite before.

My fingers drifted from her cheek to the skin just above the bite.

Poppyโ€ฆthings were just different with her.

Always.

Her eyes fluttered open, locking with mine. She didnโ€™t speak. Neither did I while I waited for her to demand that I not touch her. She didnโ€™t, but I withdrew my hand anyway, knowing better than to push my luck. โ€œHow are you feeling?โ€

Poppyโ€™s nose scrunched, and then she laughed.

Completely caught off guard by the reaction, I felt myself grin. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t believe youโ€™re asking me if Iโ€™m okay when I stabbed you in the heart.โ€

โ€œDo you think you should be asking me that question?โ€ I countered. When she didnโ€™t answer, my smile spread. โ€œIโ€™m relieved to hear that you care. Iโ€™m perfectly fine.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care,โ€ she muttered, sitting up.

โ€œLies,โ€ I murmured. The thing was, I knew she did. She wouldnโ€™t have taken my pain away earlier if she didnโ€™t, but she didnโ€™tย wantย to care. My chest tightened. I couldnโ€™t blame her for that. โ€œYou didnโ€™t answer my

question.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€ She stared at the dull yellow of the quilt draped over her. โ€œKieran said you dozed off in the bath.โ€

โ€œDid he tell you he came into the bathing chamber?โ€ she asked. โ€œYes.โ€

Her gaze shot to mine.

โ€œI trust Kieran,โ€ I said. โ€œYouโ€™ve been asleep for several hours.โ€ โ€œIs that not normal?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not abnormal. I guess Iโ€™mโ€ฆโ€ I frowned. โ€œI guess Iโ€™m feeling guilty for biting you.โ€

โ€œYou guess?โ€ she stammered.

I wasnโ€™t sure. If I hadnโ€™t bitten her, I never wouldโ€™ve discovered that she was half-Atlantian. Then again, there was a lot with Poppy that I felt guilt for but didnโ€™t regret. โ€œI believe so.โ€

โ€œYou should feel guilt!โ€ she exclaimed.

I raised a brow. โ€œEven though you stabbed me and left me to die?โ€ Her mouth clamped shut. โ€œYou didnโ€™t die. Obviously.โ€ โ€œObviously. I was barely winded.โ€

โ€œCongratulations.โ€ Poppy rolled her eyes. Amused, I chuckled.

Poppy, however, was not amused. Shoving the quilt aside, she scooted to the other side of the bed. โ€œWhy are you here? To take me back to the

cell?โ€

โ€œI should. If anyone other than Kieran knew you had stabbed me, I would be expected to.โ€

Poppy stood. โ€œThen why donโ€™t you?โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t want to.โ€

Her hands opened and closed as she stared. โ€œSo, what now? How is this going to work, Yourย Highness?โ€

My jaw clenched.

โ€œYouโ€™ll keep me locked up in a room until youโ€™re ready for us to leave?โ€ she asked.

โ€œDo you not like this room?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s far better than a dirty cell, but itโ€™s still a prison,โ€ she said. โ€œA cage, no matter how nice the accommodations are.โ€

She was right. โ€œYou would know, wouldnโ€™t you? After all, youโ€™ve been imprisoned since you were a child. Caged and veiled.โ€

Surprisingly, she didnโ€™t deny that as she turned to the small window, her arms folded over her chest.

My gaze dropped. The breeches she wore fit her like a second skin. I liked it. A lot. โ€œI came here to escort you to dinner.โ€

โ€œEscort me to dinner?โ€ Her eyes widened.

โ€œI feel like thereโ€™s an echo in this room, but yes, I imagine youโ€™re hungry,โ€ I said. โ€œAnd weโ€™ll discuss what will happen next when we have some food in our stomachs.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œNo?โ€ I repeated. When there was no further explanation, I stretched out on my side, plopping my cheek on my fist. โ€œYou have to be hungry.โ€

Poppy shook her head, but the act didnโ€™t match her words. โ€œI am hungry.โ€

I sighed. โ€œThen whatโ€™s the problem, Princess?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to eat with you. Thatโ€™s the problem.โ€

I fought a grin. โ€œWell, itโ€™s a problem youโ€™re going to have to get over because itโ€™s your only option.โ€

โ€œSee, thatโ€™s where youโ€™re wrong. I have options.โ€ She turned from me. Big mistake.

I rose silently.

โ€œIโ€™d rather starve than eat with you,ย Your Highnessโ€”โ€ Poppy squeaked as I stepped in front of her. โ€œGods,โ€ she gasped, pressing her hand to her chest.

โ€œThatโ€™s where youโ€™re wrong, Princess.โ€ I met her stare. โ€œYou donโ€™t have options when it comes to your own well-being and your own foolish

stubbornness.โ€

Her brows shot up. โ€œExcuse me?โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t let you weaken or starve yourself because youโ€™re mad. And I do get it. I get why youโ€™re upset. Why you want to fight me on everything, every step of the way.โ€ I took a step toward her. She didnโ€™t back down. Her chin lifted, and I knew she was digging in for a fight, but little did she

know, it wouldnโ€™t get the desired effect. โ€œI want you to, Princess. I enjoy it.โ€ Poppy blinked. โ€œYouโ€™re twisted.โ€

โ€œNever said I wasnโ€™t. So, fight me. Argue with me. See if you can actually injure me next time.โ€ I paused. โ€œI dare you.โ€

Her arms unfolded. โ€œYouโ€™reโ€ฆthereโ€™s something wrong with you.โ€ โ€œThat may be true, but what is also true, is the fact that I will not let you

put yourself in unnecessary danger.โ€

โ€œMaybe youโ€™ve forgotten, but I can handle myself,โ€ she retorted.

โ€œI havenโ€™t forgotten. I will never stop you from lifting a sword to protect yourself or those you care about,โ€ I told her. โ€œBut I wonโ€™t let you drive that sword through your own heart just to make a point.โ€

She was silent for a moment as she seemed to process what I said, then let out a frustrated shriek. โ€œOf course, you wonโ€™t! What good am I to you dead? I suppose you still plan to use me to free your brother.โ€

โ€œYou are nothing to me if youโ€™re dead,โ€ I snapped, my irritation flaring up. That wasnโ€™t at all what Iโ€™d meant.

Poppyโ€™s sharp inhale felt like a lash against my skin. This was not the best way to start.

โ€œCome on. The food will get cold.โ€ I took her hand, but she didnโ€™t move. โ€œDonโ€™t fight me on this, Poppy. You need to eat, and my people need to see that you have my protection if you want any chance of not being locked in a room all day.โ€

Poppy clearly wanted to fight, but in this, she relented. For now.
