โNeither Kieran nor I could figure out how you had these gifts. It just didnโt make sense to us. Nothing Iโd found on Ian or what was said about who you believed your parents to be indicated anything like that,โ I said as I sat
beside her, keeping my voice low.
Kieran slept beside her in his wolven form, as did Delano, who was at the foot of the bed. I didnโt want to wake either of them.
โI hadnโt fully figured out yet that youโd used your abilities on me. I had an inkling then, but not until we spoke about it.โ I leaned over, fixing the strap on her slip. โAnd when I did? It blew me away that youโd do that for me.โ
I swallowed thickly. It still blew me away that sheโd taken that risk, and it had been just as risky as what sheโd done for Airrick in the Blood Forest. โI donโt know if you picked up on what I was feeling during that time. I
was aโฆโ A low, rough laugh left me. โI was a fucking mess of guilt and worry, and this desperation I didnโt fully understand then. I just knew I couldnโt allow you to remain under the Blood Crownโs control. That you deserved a shot at a real life.โ
Pressing a kiss to her temple, I stayed there for several long moments, the bridge of my nose pressed against her cheek, until I heard footsteps approaching from the hall outside.
โWhat are you doing here?โ Emilโs voice demanded from beyond the chamber.
Kieran stirred at once, lifting his head as I frowned, straightening. At the foot of the bed, Delanoโs ears flattened. He jumped down, his claws rapping softly off the floor. A low growl started to rumble from his chest. I rose, grabbing the dagger from the nightstand.
A grunt came, followed by the sound of someone hitting a wall. Kieran moved, planting two massive paws on the other side of Poppyโs legs so he
stood over her as I stepped forward, flipping the dagger. Holding the blade between my fingers, I cocked my arm back as the door swung open, revealing a glimpse of a pale-haired figure in blackโ
Millicent walked in, the hem of her tightly fitting tunic snapping at the knees of her black tights. She drew up short, pale blue eyes narrowing.
โPlease donโt,โ she said. โI would really appreciate not having to do the whole dying and coming back to life thing at the moment.โ Her attention
shifted to the growling wolven before her and then the one on the bed. โOr having to regrow limbs. That shit sucks. Growing skin and bone isnโt fun. Itโs painful, in case anyone is wondering.โ
โIโm not wondering.โ I didnโt lower the blade as my gaze shifted to the hall. I could only see half of Emil. A golden-brown-haired fucker had him pinned to the wall. My brother. โBut Iโm guessing Naill located you two.โ
โActually,โ came Naillโs disembodied voice from the hall, โI did, and then I didnโt. Found one but not the otherโโ
โYou know,โ my brother drawled, โnone of that is important right now.โ Letting go of Emil, Malik turned and faced the chamber.
I tensed. Malik didnโt look well-rested. His golden-brown hair was swept back into a knot at the nape of his neck. His eyes were just as shadowed as Poppyโs, and he had a fading bruise on his jaw. He, too, wore black, but his linen shirt was wrinkled and torn across the chest. I was confident the breeches were the ones heโd worn the last time Iโd seen him.
โHeard you were looking for me,โ Malik said, crossing his arms as Emil flipped him off over his shoulder. โAnd yet, when I came here, I was told that I could not see youโby Naill, Emil, Hisa, and some other random-ass female wolvenโโ
โAnd yet, you are here,โ I cut in. โBoth of you.โ
โYeah, we are.โ Malikโs golden gaze flicked to the dagger I held. โIs that necessary?โ
โWhat do you think?โ I answered as Kieran growled low in his throat. I lowered the dagger, but I sure as fuck wasnโt putting it down.
Malik started forward. โYou have got to be fucking kiddingโโ โWhat is wrong with her?โ Millicent demanded, bending sideways to
see around Kieran.
Every muscle in my body locked up. โNothing is wrong with her.โ โLiar, liar,โ she sang, slowly straightening. โNo one sleeps through a
five-hundred-pound wolven standing over them and growling.โ
Kieranโs ears flattened.
โWhatโs wrong with her?โ Millicent repeated. โIs sheโฆokay?โ โNone of that is any of your business,โ I said.
Her head whipped toward me. โNone of my business? Thatโs myย sister.โ โYou share her blood, but youโre a stranger to herโone who thought it
would be better if she was dead,โ I reminded her. โI never said that.โ
โYou said you failed at killing her.โ I bit out the words. โThat gives the impression you wanted her dead.โ
โI needed her dead, we all needed that, and you know why. But thatโs neither here nor there now, is it?โ Her fingers twitched at her sides. โBut I neverย wantedย her dead.โ
Her choice of words caused me to stiffen. โIs there a difference?โ โCas,โ Malik snarled. โShe is not going to hurtโโ
โNo one is talking to you,โ I snapped. โSo, how about you shut the fuck up?โ
Malikโs eyes narrowed, but there was no mistaking how his pupils constricted, or the look he gave me. Iโd seen that a thousand times when we were boys and I annoyed him.
โBesides the fact that I canโt do shit to a Primal,โ Millicent began, โI have no desire to harm her.โ
โShe killed your mother.โ
โMother?โ Millicent laughed, the sound high-pitched and maybe a little crazed, causing Delano to tense. โYeah.โ Her laughter faded as she clasped her hands together. โThat was our mother, but if you think Iโm going to seek revenge, you must think Iโm an idiot.โ
โWellโฆโ I drew out the word, smirking as Malik growled. โI wouldnโt say an idiot, but a little off balance? Yes.โ
โI would be offended if that wasnโt true,โ she remarked, her fingers beginning to twist together. She shook her head, looking at the ceiling. โIโm not a stranger to her. I spent time with her when she was a child.โ Her gaze went back to where Kieran stood, no longer growling. โShe probably doesnโt remember that. Probably blocked it out. Either way, she didnโt
know, but IโฆI watched over her. She was always in the underground chambersโฆโ She trailed off, the knuckles of her fingers turning white.
โYour father has been freed,โ I said after a moment.
Millicentโs eyes closed, the skin tightening around them. Behind her, Malik had gone silent, his focus fully on her. โGood.โ
A heartbeat passed. โHe asked about you.โ
Her eyes flew open as her chest rose but did not fall. โWe told him you were okay,โ I said.
The breath she released was a ragged one. I looked at Millicent thenโ really looked at her. There was no dark color in her hair. It was a blond so pale it was nearly white and hung in curls to the middle of her back. There was no black or red mask painted on her face, nor was there anything painted on her arms. Freckles dotted her upturned nose and covered the high cheekbones of her oval face. She was leaner, but her mouth, strong
brow, and stubborn chin? A jolt of shock hit me, just as it had when Iโd first seen her free of the ink and paint. She looked so damn much like Poppy.
Millicent had asked me if Poppy rambled liked her. That and their
appearance werenโt the only things they shared. I looked at her hands, how she twisted her fingers just like Poppy did whenever she was anxious or uncomfortable.
I glanced at Kieran, then refocused on Millicent. I was torn. Technically, Poppy hadnโt completed her Ascension, and I bet that made her somewhat vulnerable. I didnโt want to take any risks, especially with Poppy, but I thought about what Iโd said to her while she slept. And about all the shit Millicent had likely gone through being raised by that bitch of a mother. I
saw Malik, still watching her. I knew firsthand what heโd gone through
before he started to play Isbethโs game, and I knew he only did that because of her.
Millicent.
Poppyโs sister.
And Poppy had lost so much. Vikter. Her brother. The two people who were her parents. Time spent with her biological father. Time with Tawny. I didnโt know what kind of relationship Poppy would want with Millicent.
Thereโd been no time to really discuss it, but I couldnโt stand in the way. Even if it disturbed me to know my blood had been used to attempt to Ascend Millicent into her godhood.
โWhy did you run?โ I asked. โWhy did you flee the Temple?โ โMaybe thatโs none of your business,โ Malik shot back.
Since it was something Iโd say if our roles were reversed, I ignored him.
โI thoughtโฆโ Millicent blinked rapidly. โWhen I saw the silver light,
the realms split open, andโฆand that draken come through, I thought it was her at first.โ Her lashes lowered. โThe Primal of Life. And even when I realized it wasnโt her, I knewโฆI know she awakened.โ
I frowned. โWhy would you run because of that? Sheโs your grandmother,โ I said, and yeah, that still sounded weird.
Millicentโs eyes flicked to me. โNo one hates Revenants more than the Primal of Life, and itโs not because weโre abominationsโโ
โYouโre not an abomination,โ Malik interjected.
She smiled, but there was nothing to it. No emotion. โYes, we are. But with the Primal of Life, itโs personal, and IโฆI ran because I thoughtโฆโ A heavy exhale left her as she focused on what she could see of Poppy. โI thought she would take me out.โ One shoulder lifted. โI was afraid.โ
โPoppy wouldnโt do that,โ I said.
โHow was she supposed to know that?โ Malik countered from the doorway.
I started to respond, but there was no way for Millicent to have known that. Howeverโฆ โYouโre not someone who strikes me as being afraid of death.โ
Millicentโs gaze flicked back to me. She said nothing, and I was right. Millicent wasnโt afraid to die, be it final or not. It wasnโt her death sheโd been afraid of.
I looked at my brother and cursed under my breath. โShe sleepsโin
stasis until she fully completes her Culling,โ I said quietly, and that was all I said. Neither she nor Malik needed to know there was a chanceโa small oneโthat Poppy could wake with no knowledge of herself.
Millicent jerked. โIs that common?โ โYou donโt know?โ
She shook her head. โI know what stasis is, how they can go to ground.
How long will it last?โ
โNot much longer.โ I hoped.
Kieran slowly backed off, sinking onto his belly beside Poppy. Delano did the same, returning to the foot of the bed but remaining on the floor.
And Millicentโฆshe stared at the bed. โShe looks the same,โ she said after a few moments. โI mean, sheโs paler than normal.โ
I didnโt tell her it had been much worse before. I noticed she was twisting her fingers again. I glanced at Malik. There were things I needed to
askโabout how the fuck Revenants were made, and everything with Callum, but now wasnโt the time.
โDo you want to visit with her?โ
Millicentโs head jerked toward me. She said nothing, but she nodded. I looked once more at Malik. Heโd quietly stepped back into the hall. I needed to talk with him, butโฆ
Kieran rose from the bed and quickly shifted. His eyes locked with mine. โIโll stay with them.โ
โAre you going to put some clothing on?โ Millicent asked. โDo I need to?โ
โI mean, itโs your dick hanging out, not mine.โ Millicent shrugged and then came forward, eyeing Delano but not Kieran as she sat on the very, very edge of the bed.
I caught Kieranโs eye, and he nodded. I tossed him the dagger. He smiled at Millicent. โAre you afraid of wolven?โ
โThatโs like asking if youโre not afraid of draken,โ she retorted, glancing at Delano. Iโd swear the fucking wolven smiled. โEveryone should be afraid of anything with claws and sharp teeth.โ
I walked out then, pulling the door after me but leaving it cracked open.
Malik didnโt protest. He knew Kieran wouldnโt do anything unless given reason to, and I supposed that also said he knew Millicent wouldnโt give cause.
I glanced to where Emil stood with Naill. โCan you give us a moment?โ
Naill nodded, but Emil said, โI kind of want to witness this awkward meet and greetโโ
โEmil,โ muttered Naill, catching the back of his tunic. โI swear to the gods.โ
Malik watched Naill drag the other Atlantian down the hall. โI see Emil really hasnโt changed.โ
โWhat the hell happened to you?โ I asked.
He faced me. โIโm not sure what youโre referencing, exactly.โ
โYour face.โ I crossed my arms. โLooks like youโve been in a fight.โ โI was. We were, actually.โ
โWith?โ
โOther Revs.โ He leaned against the wall. โThose loyal to Isbeth.โ Surprise flickered through me. โAnd how did that go?โ
โBloody. There are still a few out there, running about, but we took out most of those who would be a problem.โ
โAnd byย took out, you mean killed? โCause thatโs interesting.โ I eyed him. โI was under the impression that draken fire was the only thing that could kill them.โ
One side of his lips twisted up. โThere are things that can kill a Rev.โ โReally?โ I wasnโt sure if I believed him. This wasnโt what weโd been
told.
โThe Primal of Death can, and I assume that meansย bothย of them,โ he said, referencing Nyktos and Kolis. โSince Kolis created themโand before you ask, I donโt know how he did it. And she can. The Primal of Life.โ
โAnd Poppy.โ
Malikโs jaw tightened.
โBut neither of you is either of those two things, so how the hell did you kill some of those troublesome Revs?โ
A muscle ticked in his temple.
โI get it,โ I said when he didnโt answer. โYou donโt want me to possess the knowledge of how to kill one, which is idiotic, considering my wife is
one of those ways, but mainly because if I wanted knowledge on how to kill Millicent, I wouldnโt have left her in the chamber with Poppy.โ
โYou didnโt leave her alone with Millie,โ he countered. โNot really.โ I stepped closer to him. โWould you have if the roles were reversed?โ โNo.โ Malikโs laugh was dry. โDraken fire and draken blood can kill
them,โ he shared. โLucky for us, Millie knew where Isbeth kept vials of it.
You either make them ingest it or dip a blade or arrow in it. As long as it
gets into their heart or head, theyโre done. I got the impression that Reaver was unaware of thatโwhere is he?โ
โHe took Malec back to Iliseeum.โ
โShit,โ he said, brows raised. โHe was still alive?โ
โBarely, from what I gathered.โ I glanced down the hall. โAre there more of those vials?โ
His stare sharpened. โThere are.โ
โAnd do either you or Millie know if the draken Isbeth got that blood from is being held?โ I asked, even though we knew. โThatโs Nektasโs daughterโyou know, that big-ass draken.โ
โI was kind of temporarily dead when he came through,โ he said, and my stomach twisted sharply. Malik had died. Iโd seen that, too. โSo, I didnโt
see him in that form, but to answer your question, I donโt. Millie? Possibly. There were many things she wasnโt supposed to know that she found out, but I seriously doubt that draken will be in a good way. So, when you go for her, make sure another draken is with you. They can fuck up a Primal really bad.โ
โNoted,โ I murmured.
โIโm surprised our father hasnโt arrived yet,โ Malik stated. โWe delayed him a bit.โ
โBecause of Poppy?โ When I said nothing, he laughed. โYou donโt trust him, either.โ
โThereโs only one person I irrevocably trust. Not taking chances with anyone else.โ
Malik eyed me. โYouโre a little overprotective of a being who is literally immortal.โ
Just because Poppy was a Primal didnโt mean she was indestructible. I didnโt know a lot about Primals. None of us did. But there wereย always
checks and balances. Besides, I didnโt fear my father attempting to harm Poppy.
It was that slim chance that Poppy didnโt remember who she was when she woke.
โWhy do I have a feeling thereโs something youโre not telling me?โ he asked.
I said nothing to that.
โAll right.โ Malik smiled, but it didnโt reach his eyes. I realized none of his smiles had since weโd been reunited. โSo, what is your game plan here, Cas? You took down the Blood Crown, but thereโs been no public address. Only Descenters on the streets, acting as Priests and Priestesses, preaching the goodness of Atlantia and their new King and Queen.โ
โPoppy and I are not their King and Queen.โ
His brows shot up. โIโm sorry, you two rule Atlantia, correct? You just seized the capital and destroyed the reigning monarch. Does that not make you their sovereign rulers?โ
I got what he was saying, but this was another thing that Poppy and I hadnโt had a lot of time to really hash out. โNo decisions on that will be made until sheโs awake.โ
โOkay, then, but they think you two are their new rulersโan Atlantian and a god, by the way. They have no idea sheโs a Primalโโ
โI know.โ I rubbed my temple. โThose are bridges weโll cross when we get there.โ
Malik stared and then laughed. This time, it reminded me of one of his old laughs, and that hit me in the chest.
Hard.
I cleared my throat. โWhat?โ
โItโs justโฆโ Trailing off, he shook his head. โWhen we were kids, you were always at your lessons on time. I had to be tracked down. You learned what it took to handle land disputes and which crops grew best where, and I forgot everything the moment our tutors were gone. You always wouldโve made a better King than me.โ His gaze flicked back to mine. โAnd yet, I get the impression you donโt want to be King.โ
โBeing King meant accepting that you were dead,โ I said, and his mouth tensed. โOr, at the very least, incapable of ruling. So, maybe when I was younger and jealous of what you had, I wanted that, but I donโt now.โ
โBut you did it anyway,โ he said quietly.
โPoppy took the throne,โ I reminded him. โShe superseded all of us. She is the Queen. I am the King because of her. If she had chosen differently?
Our mother and father would still sit on that throne. It would still be yours.โ Anger festered. โHell, it couldโve been yours years before Poppy arrived in Atlantia if you had come home.โ
โI couldnโt.โ Malik pushed off the wall, anger flaring in his eyes. โI wouldnโt leave Millie alone, and itโs not like you wouldnโt have done the same thing. You just admitted that youโd abdicate the throne for her. And
Iโm sure youโve done a whole lot of other shit for her that goes against what is right or wrong. So how about you knock off this self-righteousness a bit, okay? Youโre no better than meโโ
โI never said I was,โ I seethed, stepping toward him. โI spent the last fucking century torn up, thinking about what was being done to you, exactly the kind of horrors they were putting you through. All the while knowing that Iโฆit was my actions that put you there.โ
Malik went rigid. โCasโโ
โIf I hadnโt been so foolishly obsessed with proving myself, I wouldnโt have gotten captured. You never wouldโve had to come for me. That is an inarguable fact. It wasnโt Shea who put you there. It was me, so I drowned in that guilt until I learned to exist with it.โ My nostrils flared as my lips flattened against my teeth. โAnd look, I donโt blame you for doing what you
needed to do to survive, playing whatever fucked-up game you had to. I donโt blame you for staying because of Millicent. And the shit with Poppy when she was a child? Iโm not going to even think about that because it
makes me want to fucking choke you. But you know what I canโt
understand? Your silence. You couldโve sent word to me. You couldโve let me know you were surviving.โ
Malik held my stare, his jaw working.
โYou had to know what I was doing these last several years to free you,โ
I told him, hands clenching. โAll the people Iโve killed? Those Iโve
harmed? Those who died to free you? But no. You just let me exist all these fucking years fearing, believing I would be too late. That you would be dead or beyond help, consumed by the guiltโโ I cut myself off, taking a step back, and it took me a moment before I could trust myself to speak again. โWhy didnโt you send word?โ
โItโs notโฆโ Malik swallowed, head still shaking. โI thought about it, Cas. A hundred times. A thousand.โ
โThen why?โ I asked, voice hoarse. โYou couldโve told me that youโd joined them. You couldโve saidย anything.โ
โThatโs not true, and you know it.โ
โBullshit.โ I started to turn before I did something Iโd thoroughly enjoy at the moment but might regret later.
Malik moved fast, blocking the door. โYou want to have this conversation now? Then weโre going to have it. If I sent word and told you that Iโd joined the Blood Crown, would you have believed me? Or would you have thought it was some sort of farce?โ
My head snapped back to him.
โWould it have stopped anything you did?โ he demanded, the centers of his cheeks flushing with anger. โAnd if I told you about her? Would you
have even believed Iโd found my heartmate? Back then? Because I know you wouldnโt have. You didnโt really believe in it. Neither did I. So, you wouldโve still done what youโve been doing.โ
โMaybe youโre right,โ I spat, and fuck, maybe he was. โBut there had to be other options, Malik. You couldโve said anything, starting with the truth
โโ
โI didnโt want you coming after me!โ Malik shouted, shoving me. โI didnโt want you anywhere near the capitalโโ
โBut I already was!โ I yelled, pushing him right back. โNot saying anything sure as fuck didnโt prevent it.โ
โI know that. Gods, do I fucking know. But I was fucked, Cas. Damned if I did, damned if I didnโt,โ he said, chest rising and falling. โBecause I
knew if I told you the truth about what Isbeth was trying, you wouldโve dropped your plans to free me. You wouldnโt have gone for her. Instead, you wouldโve come straight to the capital.โ He jabbed his finger at the doors. โAnd if I told you that Iโd joined the Blood Crown, you still
wouldโve come straight to the capital under the pretense of doing the same thing. And if you had? What do you think Isbeth wouldโve done?โ
โYou knew her better than me,โ I snapped. โYou tell me.โ Malikโs smile was a cruel twist. โYouโd be dead.โ
I barked out a harsh, short laugh. โDoubtful.โ
โOh, you really think that?โ His laugh mirrored mine. โI think youโre forgetting the original plan, the one where Isbeth had no need of you. It was supposed to be me who Ascended Poppy when the time was right.โ
My head cranked to the side, lips peeling back as I grabbed Malik by the collar of his shirt and slammed him into the wall.
โGrowl at me all you want, Cas, but the truth is, Isbeth had no need of you before you went off and decided to take the Maiden. She hadnโt planned on that. Sheโd just adapted her plans, but if you had come for me before that? She wouldโve made me kill you.โ Malik swept his arms up, knocking mine aside. Then he was right in my face. โIsbeth knew about Millieโwhat she is for me. And trust me when I say she took every opportunity to use that as leverage. She wouldโve made me choose, Cas. Millie or you.โ
I stiffened.
โAnd I wouldnโt have relied on whatever motherly bond she might have had.โ His stare held mine. โBecause they can dish out worse things than death, as you are well aware. So I think you know what I wouldโve chosen.โ
I did.
I turned from him, shoving a hand through my hair. Because I knew exactly what I wouldโve done if the situation were reversed.ย Fuck.
โI hated it,โ Malik added quietly. โKnowing you were out there, risking your life to free me. I wanted nothing more than for you to return home and forget about meโโ
โI never wouldโve been able to do that.โ I faced him.
โI know, but I wanted it.โ His shoulders tensed. โI wanted you to go
home andย liveย without guilt, because you wouldnโt have needed to feel as if you had to prove yourself if Iโd been a better brotherโa better heir.โ
โMalik,โ I started.
โCome on, the only reason you paid attention in our lessons was the
same reason you felt you needed to take care of the Blood Crown. Because you knew that once I took the throne, I wouldโve started a war and gotten myself killed.โ
โNo, you wouldnโt have,โ I denied. โYou didnโt want war.โ
โI didnโt want it, but I couldโve been talked into it. You know Alastir wouldโve gotten to me,โ he said when I shook my head. โHe wanted that
long before shit went bad with us and Shea. And I wouldโve listened. Fuck, I wouldโve let him run the damn kingdom as long as I could do what I wanted, which was whatever required the least amount of effort.โ
โYou donโt give yourself enough credit,โ I muttered. โYou never did.โ โThatโs something else weโll have to disagree on.โ A few short moments
of silence fell as we locked eyes. He exhaled slowly. โIโm sorry, Cas.โ โDonโt.โ
โI am. Iโm sorry for what you had to believe. Iโm sorry for all you had to do. For the pain. For all the death.โ His voice dropped. โFor Shea.โ
I closed my eyes.
โI wish the past was different for us,โ he said. โBut itโs not, and I donโt think either of us would change very much, would we?โ
Not if it jeopardized where we were today, as fucked-up as that was. Rubbing the heel of my palm over my chest, I looked at my brother and thought about how I knew I wouldnโt have done a damn thing differently if I were in Malikโs place.
I dropped my hand, sighing. Knowing that and this conversation didnโt erase all the messy-ass feelings we both had surrounding everything. Our lies. Our guilt. Our fuckups. The blood on our hands.
But we were brothers, and I loved the fucker.
I exhaled long and slow, gaze moving to the door. When I spoke, I kept my voice low. โIโm guessing Millicent still has no idea youโre heartmates?โ
Malikโs attention shifted to where mine had. He shook his head. โYou going to tell her?โ
โI havenโt really even acted upon it,โ he murmured.
My brows flew up. I could only assume he meant getting physical and not the kind that left him bloody. โSo, Iโm guessing thatโs a no?โ
Malik nodded.
โWhy?โ I asked.
A wry smile appeared. โBecause she hates me.โ
โI donโt think thatโs true,โ I said, crossing my arms. โWhen you got hurt out there, sheโโ
โItโs true,โ he cut me off. โShe hates me and has every damn reason to.โ
I didnโt know what to say to that at first. I had no knowledge of her reasons or what he believed them to be. โPoppy hated me at one point.โ
โYeah, but you havenโt done the things I have,โ he said, clearing his throat. โAnyway, there is something you should know. Itโs about the
Revenants and Kolis.โ
His change of subject didnโt pass me by, but I let it slide. โWhat?โ โCallum made sure all of them knew who their creator was, so those
who were loyal to Isbeth? That only went surface-deep. They were loyal to Kolis. And the ones we couldnโt find?โ Malikโs eyes met mine. โTheyโre going to be a problem. Theyโre going to try everything to bring him to full power and stop anyone who attempts to thwart that.โ
Millicent didnโt stay when I re-entered the chamber. Without saying a word, she rose and left. According to Kieran, sheโd said nothing while she sat
beside Poppy.
Sheโd only held her hand.
โEverything cool with you?โ Kieran asked, picking up a pair of clean breeches. The fact that heโd remained nude by Poppyโs side, not leaving Millie alone, brought forth a smile that was part amused and part, well, proud.
โYou heard Malik and me?โ I returned to my place beside Poppy.
โEveryone on this floor likely heard you two,โ he stated dryly. โAt least parts of the conversation.โ
I snorted, taking the cup from the nightstand. โEverything isโฆas good as it can be.โ
Kieran pulled up his breeches, fastening the flap. โYou think theyโll get better?โ
โPossibly.โ I took a drink of water, then offered the glass to Delano. He shook his head. โDid you hear what he said about the Revs?โ I asked, returning the cup to the nightstand.
โParts of it.โ Bootless, he returned to the bed and sat on Poppyโs other side.
I filled him in, and none of what Iโd shared was particularly good news.
But as Iโd once told Poppy, I wouldnโt borrow from tomorrowโs problems.
Picking up the hand that Millicent had held, I brought it to my lips. I tabled the shit with Kolis and my brother as I searched for where Iโd stopped in my story. Weโd been on the road.
To New Haven.
Where everything truly changed.
