Chapter no 60 – ON THE ROAD

A Soul of Ash and Blood (A Blood and Ash Book 5)

โ€œHere.โ€ Kieran reached inside his saddlebag as we rode through the northern valley, pulling out a chunk of cheese wrapped in wax paper.

Poppy eyed his offering. โ€œYou sure?โ€ Kieran nodded.

She hesitated. โ€œBut wonโ€™t you be hungry later?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll be arriving in New Haven in a few hours,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™ll eat then.โ€

โ€œI can eat then, too.โ€

Staring at Phillipsโ€™ and Bryantโ€™s backs, I grinned. โ€œBut you ate all your cheese,โ€ Kieran replied. โ€œAnd mine,โ€ I added.

Her head whipped to the side. โ€œYou said you didnโ€™t want it.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t.โ€ I glanced down at her. โ€œYou know you want his cheese.โ€ Poppyโ€™s chin rose stubbornly. โ€œIโ€™m not going to eat his food.โ€

โ€œIf he was planning on eating it, he wouldnโ€™t have offered it.โ€

โ€œHe speaks the truth,โ€ Kieran said, arm still extended, cheese lifted between his steed and Setti.

โ€œTake it, Princess,โ€ I said. โ€œIf not, youโ€™ll hurt his feelings.โ€ Kieran sent me a droll look.

I ignored it. โ€œHeโ€™s very sensitive, you see. He will take it personally.โ€ โ€œI will not take it personally.โ€

Dipping my head, I whispered, โ€œHe most definitely will.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ Poppy relented, the corners of her mouth curling upward. She took the cheese. โ€œThank you.โ€

โ€œMore like thank the gods,โ€ Kieran muttered.

Poppy eyed him as she popped a tiny piece of the cheese into her mouth. โ€œSo, will you be staying in the capital, Kieran?โ€

My grin went up a notch as I raised my brows at him. When Kieran first started riding beside us, Poppy had stayed quiet as she stole glances at him. She was nervous at first, seemingly unsure what to think of him, and then sheโ€™d started peppering him with questions, much to his rising discomfort. Where was he from? How long had he been a guard? Had he lived in

Masadonia long? Did his horse have a name? That was my favorite question, because it was the first time Kieran had looked genuinely amused by the litany of questions Poppy came up with.

โ€œNameโ€™s Pulus,โ€ heโ€™d answered, which was amusing to me for two reasons.

That wasnโ€™t the horseโ€™s name. I wasnโ€™t even sure Kieran knew what the steed was called.

And Pulus was also the name of a lesser god, one who had served under the goddess Penellaphe and was known in our histories for asking a lot of questions.

โ€œI have no plans to stay in Carsodonia,โ€ Kieran answered, scanning the hills to our right.

โ€œOh.โ€ Poppy nibbled on the cheese. A few moments passed. โ€œThen will you travel back to Masadonia?โ€

โ€œI will be traveling again,โ€ he said.

She looked up as a thick cloud passed overhead, letting a bit of the fading sunlight reach us. It was later in the day than Iโ€™d hoped. โ€œIt must be tiresome making such long trips and then having to turn around and do it again.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t mind it.โ€ Kieran shifted on his saddle. โ€œI prefer being out in the open.โ€

Her brows rose. โ€œYou prefer being outside the Rise?โ€ Kieran nodded.

โ€œBut itโ€™s so dangerous.โ€ She lowered the cheese. โ€œYou saw what

happens to those who live outside the Rise, or even those who live in cities that have walls like Masadonia or the capital. They end up becoming what we faced in the Blood Forest.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s inside those walls can be just as dangerous as whatโ€™s outside them,โ€ he told her.

Poppyโ€™s head tilted. She started to speak, but then took another bite of the cheese as I drew my thumb over her hip. โ€œI suppose you are correct.โ€

She was likely thinking about the Descenters and the night of the Rite.

The so-called Dark One and the Atlantians the Ascended swore lived hidden among them.

โ€œI have a question for you,โ€ Kieran said as a cool breeze caught in the nearby trees, rattling the limbs. The scent of snow was in the air. โ€œIf you had a choice, what would you be doing right now?โ€

โ€œInstead of annoying you with questions?โ€ she responded. โ€œYes,โ€ Kieran stated dryly. โ€œInstead of that.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not annoying him,โ€ I said, cutting Kieran a dark look as I gave her hip a light pat. โ€œHe enjoys being asked questions because it means

someone is paying attention to him. He likes attention.โ€ Kieran huffed.

“He doesnโ€™t seem like someone who enjoys attention,” she remarked, glancing at him. “But to answer your questionโ€”what would I choose to do? I thinkโ€ฆI think I would choose this.”

“You would choose traveling to the capital?” he asked, as my stomach tightened.

“No. Thatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m saying.” Poppy fiddled with the remaining cheese in the wax paper, and a somewhat unsettling wave of relief washed over me. “I mean, I would choose to be out here.” She looked up at the graying sky. “Just out here.”

Kieran glanced at her, the skin between his brows furrowing. “I know that doesnโ€™t make much sense.” Poppy laughed self-consciously. “Itโ€™s just that Iโ€™ve never been here before. Iโ€™ve never really been anywhere, that I can remember. And I donโ€™t know what…” She trailed off, squirming slightly. “Anyway, I would choose this, but with more cheese.”

I had a feeling I knew what she had been about to say. That she didnโ€™t

know what was out there to even choose something different than this. And, fuck, that wasโ€ฆit was tragic.

I could tell Kieran had sensed what she was trying to say, too. I saw it in the tension of his shoulders.

โ€œYouโ€™re making sense,โ€ I told her, well aware of Kieranโ€™s attention shifting to me. My arm tightened around Poppy, drawing her back against my chest. โ€œI would choose the same.โ€
