Chapter no 59 – THREE RIVERS

A Soul of Ash and Blood (A Blood and Ash Book 5)

You have the touch.

Phillipsโ€™ words kept cycling over and over as I stalked past Noahโ€™s horse. Weโ€™d found the steed a few hours after leaving the Blood Forest, grazing in a meadow without a care in the realm. Weโ€™d ridden hard, reaching the outskirts of Three Rivers at dusk with plans to take a few hours to rest and then ride the remainder of the way to New Haven.

Nearing the cluster of trees, I looked back to where Poppy sat near a fire, eating a supper of cured meat and cheeseโ€”mostly cheese, from what Iโ€™d noticed. We were on high ground with only a few scattered pines and a clear view in every direction. A small fire to beat back the chill was safe, but I didnโ€™t wander far. Phillips was beside her, and although he hadnโ€™t mentioned what weโ€™d witnessed with Airrick, he kept looking at her in wonder.

And why wouldnโ€™t he?

Phillips had witnessed Poppyโ€”the godsdamn Chosenโ€”ease a dying manโ€™s grave and painful wounds with herย touch.

Fuck,ย Iย was filled with awe and a little disbelief.

Sheโ€™s Chosen, born in a shroud.

Gods.

I looked for Kieran. We hadnโ€™t had a chance to talk until now. Luckily, he hadnโ€™t gone far.

He appeared in the trees, the collar of his tunic damp from the stream he mustโ€™ve used to wash the blood away.

โ€œDid you see what happened back in the Blood Forest?โ€ I didnโ€™t waste time.

โ€œI heard Phillips saying some weird stuff about a touch.โ€ He stopped in front of me. โ€œBut I didnโ€™t see what was going on.โ€

โ€œRemember what you said about the shroud?โ€ I kept my eyes on Poppy as my thoughts ran a hundred miles a minute. Theyโ€™d been like that for the last couple of hours. โ€œThat it wasnโ€™t impossible for a mortal to be born in

one? Well, I think that part about Poppy is true.โ€ โ€œPoppy?โ€ Kieran repeated.

โ€œThatโ€™s what sheโ€”it doesnโ€™t matter. Itโ€™s just a nickname,โ€ I said. โ€œHave you actually heard of a mortal being born in one?โ€

โ€œNot that I can recall at the moment,โ€ he answered, eyeing me closely. โ€œDoesnโ€™t mean one hasnโ€™t been at some point.โ€ His head tilted. โ€œWhat happened back there?โ€

Brows raised, I shook my head. โ€œShe eased his pain with her touchโ€” and Iโ€™m one hundred percent sure thatโ€™s what happened.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s notโ€”โ€

โ€œPossible,โ€ I cut in. โ€œI know. Sheโ€™s mortal.โ€ My heart fucking skipped as I looked at him. โ€œUnless sheโ€™s not.โ€

โ€œHalf-Atlantian? Iโ€™m not even sure that would explain these abilitiesโ€” this kind of gift,โ€ Kieran argued. โ€œThe bloodline of Atlantians capable of such died out ages ago. And, yeah, sometimes certain abilities skip a generation or two, but that is a hell of a lot to skip.โ€

โ€œHer brother is a vampry, and unless thatโ€™s not her full-blooded brother, her being part Atlantian doesnโ€™t make sense.โ€

โ€œAnd nothing has ever indicated that her parents arenโ€™t who she believes they are?โ€ He scratched his jaw when I shook my head. โ€œAre you sure thatโ€™s what you saw? The mortal body goes through some weird shit at the end.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s what I saw. Her touch took his pain. Gave himโ€ฆgave him peace.โ€ Exhaling slowly, I watched Poppy as Phillips offered her one of the canteens. โ€œI donโ€™t think that was the first time sheโ€™s done it. Phillips said itโ€™s trueโ€”the rumors.โ€ I thought about Jole Crain. โ€œOne of the guards spoke of the child of the godsโ€”her. Saying she wouldโ€™ve eased his suffering and given him dignity.โ€ I dragged a hand over my head. โ€œHe was infected, so I dismissed it.โ€ I turned to him. โ€œBut thatโ€™s what she did with Airrick.โ€

Kieran stared at me, his mouth opening and then closing. โ€œHow is that even possible, though?โ€

โ€œNo fucking clue.โ€

A bird hopped from one branch to another, peering down at us. โ€œWell, this could be why sheโ€™s so important to the Blood Crownโ€”at least part of the reason.โ€ He, too, was staring at Poppy, his brows raised.

โ€œDefinitely.โ€ But while the ability to ease anotherโ€™s anguish was

remarkable and astonishing, why would that be of value to the Ascended? They sought power and endless life. They didnโ€™t seek to give others peace. Poppy handed the canteen back to Phillips as she looked over her shoulder, searching out where Kieran and I stood in the shadows of the pines. โ€œIโ€™m guessing youโ€™ve also never heard of a mortal with those kinds of abilities?โ€

Kieranโ€™s laugh was gruff. โ€œYouโ€™ve been around them more than I have.

If you havenโ€™t, I sure as hell havenโ€™t. My father? Different story. He may have, butโ€ฆโ€ He cursed. โ€œWhat if she is Chosen?โ€

I met Kieranโ€™s gaze. โ€œThe gods are asleep.โ€

โ€œDo we know if that means they canโ€™t do whatever it is they do to

choose someone?โ€ he challenged. โ€œWe donโ€™t know. What weย doย know is that life and death and everything in between carries on while they sleep.โ€

โ€œTrue,โ€ I murmured. The last of the sunlight pulled back from the western valley below. โ€œWe need to figure out what her gifts are and how the Ascended likely plan to use them before we make this trade. This has to be tied to why she is so important to them.โ€

A keenness entered his eyes. โ€œI agree that we need to know more about what she can do, but is that the only thingย Iย need to know before we make this trade?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ But it wasnโ€™t the only thing. I needed to know exactly where Poppy stood when it came to the Ascended. Sure, she didnโ€™t want to be the Maiden. She questioned everything about that and didnโ€™t support the Rite, but she hadnโ€™t outright voiced any real dissent against the Ascended, and especially not her beloved Queen Ileana. I would have to know her stance before the exchange.

But then what? What if she wised up to the Ascended? Her brother was one of them. Could I make the exchange, free my brother, and then

recapture Poppy once more? Iโ€™d gotten into the capital before without being caught. I could do it again. That was an option.

A risky fucking option.

Going into Carsodonia was like falling face-first into a viperโ€™s nest. My gaze flicked to where Poppy was redoing the braid in her hair.

Poppyโ€ฆshe was worth the risk. To give her a chance to actually live. But I wouldnโ€™t ask any of my people to help me with it. Not even

Kieran. Iโ€™d have to do it alone.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on in your head?โ€ Kieran asked, drawing my attention back to him. โ€œI can practically see the wheels of something really bad

turning.โ€

I let out a dry laugh. โ€œJust thinking about everything.โ€ I sighed. โ€œIโ€™ll talk with her once we get to New Haven and see what I can find out. Right now, we need to get some rest.โ€

Kieran nodded. โ€œYeah, but you and I need to talk about her real quick.โ€ The muscles along my spine tensed. โ€œWhat about her?โ€

โ€œI thought her name was Penellaphe.โ€ I frowned. โ€œIt is.โ€

โ€œBut you called her Poppy.โ€

What the fuck was he getting at? โ€œOut of everything that just went down, you want to talk to me about a nickname?โ€

He raised a brow. โ€œJust wanted to say that it seems like aโ€ฆcute nickname.โ€

โ€œSo?โ€

โ€œAlso sounds like a nickname someone close to her would use.โ€ โ€œLet me repeat myselfโ€”so fucking what?โ€

Kieran stepped in close, keeping his voice low, even though the other guards werenโ€™t within earshot. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll be more blunt. Sheย isย still a maiden, yes?โ€

Everything went quiet in me as I locked eyes with Kieran.

โ€œI know you said you were willing to do anything to gain her trust,โ€ Kieran went on. โ€œClearly, youโ€™ve gotten it.โ€

I clenched my teeth, looking away. This was the last conversation I wanted to have with himโ€”especially now, when all I could think about was the trust Iโ€™d gained but didnโ€™t deserve.

Kieran noticed and pressed on. “So, thereโ€™s no reason for you to do anythingโ€”to do that to her. Especially if what youโ€™ve told me about her is true. She doesnโ€™t deserve how much that would mess with her.”

My head snapped toward him. “You think I donโ€™t know that?” I hissed. “You think I havenโ€™t considered that?”

Kieranโ€™s jaw tightened, his nostrils flaring. “I donโ€™t even know what youโ€™re thinking half the time anymore.”

I took a sharp breath, feeling those words like a blow to the chest. I wanted to tell him that wasnโ€™t true, that out of everyone in this damn realm, he knew meโ€”knew my thoughts and everything. But damn it, he really had no idea what I was thinking when it came to Poppy. Did I even know? I dragged my fingers through my hair, my gaze drifting past Kieran to land on Poppy.

โ€œShe will leave me as she came to me,โ€ I said, meeting his stare. โ€œIโ€™m not that much of a piece of shit.โ€

The skin at Kieranโ€™s mouth grew taut. โ€œI didnโ€™t say you were.โ€ I huffed out a low laugh.

โ€œSeriously.โ€ He clasped my shoulder. โ€œThe whole point of this awkward-as-fuck conversation is so you arenโ€™t feeling that way about yourself when this ends.โ€

When this endsโ€ฆ

With me just handing Poppy over to the Ascended.

โ€œI know.โ€ I cleared my throat, knowing that Kieran was also looking out for Poppyโ€”a girl he didnโ€™t know but didnโ€™t want to see hurt. It was one of

the reasons I loved him. He cared when he didnโ€™t need to. โ€œGet some rest,โ€ I told him, clasping the back of his neck and squeezing. โ€œWeโ€™re going to need it.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Kieran murmured.

We started back to the fire, parting ways, but I knew Kieran worried. He had good reason to. I went to Setti and grabbed the bedrolls and a blanket.

Phillips took note of my approach and rose. Nodding at me, he strode off.

The breeze stirred the flames, sending sparks into the air. Poppyโ€™s features were softened in the firelight, giving her an almost ethereal appearance.

What if she was Chosen?

I shook the bedrolls out, placing hers on the side that would be the warmest. โ€œWe should get some rest.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Poppy rose, dusting off her hands. She looked up at me with such brilliant green eyes.

She moved to where I placed the bedrolls and sat as the stars appeared.

Unstrapping the swords, I put them within armโ€™s reach, then draped the blanket over her legs.

โ€œYou donโ€™t need this?โ€ she asked, smothering a yawn.

โ€œIโ€™ll be fine.โ€ It wasnโ€™t too cold for me here. โ€œGot you to keep me warm.โ€

That got a pretty flush out of her as she hastily looked around the campsite. No one was close enough to hear us.

I dropped onto the bedroll beside her. โ€œWe only have a few hours to rest, then weโ€™ll ride through the night.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ she repeated, nibbling on her lower lip. She peeked at me. โ€œWhat you saw back there? With Airrick?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œWeโ€™ll talk about that later.โ€ โ€œButโ€”โ€

โ€œLater.โ€ I caught her hand, tugging her down. I didnโ€™t want anyone to potentially overhear us when we talked about this. โ€œWe need to rest. The ride will be hard from here on out.โ€

The breath Poppy let out couldโ€™ve blown out the fire if she faced it. My lips twitched as I watched her close her eyes. They didnโ€™t stay closed.

โ€œHawkeโ€”โ€

โ€œSleep.โ€

Those eyes narrowed. โ€œIโ€™m not tired.โ€

โ€œYou just yawned as loud as a tree bear.โ€

โ€œI did notโ€”โ€ A yawn interrupted her words. I laughed.

A second passed. Maybe two. Her head turned toward mine.

โ€œDo you need help relaxing again?โ€ I offered. โ€œIโ€™m more than happy to help you fall asleep.โ€

โ€œNot necessary,โ€ she snapped, all but throwing herself onto her side, turned away from me. The sudden, heady increase of her scent completely ruined her denial.

And the fact that she peeked at me from over her shoulder.

I smiled, but it didnโ€™t last. What if Poppy was Chosen by the gods? If the impossible were somehow possible?

That had to be the reason she was so important to the Blood Crown.

What did it mean for them? How could they use that, other than they did now? I suspected it was somehow tied to the planned Ascensions, but how? I didnโ€™t know, but I was sure it was terrible.
