Chapter no 52 – THIS IS PROGRESS

A Soul of Ash and Blood (A Blood and Ash Book 5)

I waited until the Duchessโ€™s guard left the hall outside Poppyโ€™s room before I approached her door.

Reaching for the handle, I stopped. I doubted I was interrupting anything. Poppy was likely sitting by the window. That was all sheโ€™d been doing since she left her chambers in the middle of the night to seek revenge.

Poppy had grown even quieter than usual, more withdrawn. The jut of her chin more stubborn. Not once since Iโ€™d seen her awake had she cried or had her eyes even looked glassy. At first, I thought that was good.

But now?

I didnโ€™t think so.

The gods knew I was no expert when it came to dealing with oneโ€™s emotionsโ€”obviouslyโ€”but sheโ€™d lost someone important to her. That pain didnโ€™t go away simply upon waking.

Knocking on the door, I gave it a moment and then entered. Poppy was by the window as I expected, but as I stood there, taking in her tired eyes and paler-than-normal skin tone, something occurred to me.

She hadnโ€™t donned that damn veil in the days since she woke. Poppyโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œWhat?โ€

I crossed my arms. โ€œNothing.โ€ โ€œThen why are you here?โ€

Her churlishness threatened to bring a smile to my face. One that would likely irritate her further. โ€œDo I need a reason?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€ I had a reason to be in her chambers this time; however, she was actually speaking instead of staring at me silently.

โ€œAre you just checking to make sure I havenโ€™t figured a way out of the room?โ€

โ€œI know you canโ€™t get out of this room, Princess.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t call me that,โ€ she snapped.

I fought a grin but welcomed the anger over the silence. โ€œIโ€™m going to take a second to remind myself that this is progress.โ€

Poppy frowned. โ€œProgress with what?โ€

โ€œWith you,โ€ I told her. โ€œYouโ€™re not being very nice, but at least youโ€™re talking. Thatโ€™s progress.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not being mean,โ€ she shot back. โ€œI just donโ€™t like to be called that.โ€ โ€œUh-huh.โ€

โ€œWhatever.โ€ Poppy looked away, squirming a little on the stone ledge.

I watched her as she stared down at her hands, the tension seeping from her rigid shoulders. I quietly moved closer. She lookedโ€ฆI wasnโ€™t sure. A

little lost? Or maybe stuck between anger and grief. I knew that feeling. โ€œI get it,โ€ I told her.

โ€œYou do?โ€ Her brows rose. โ€œYou understand?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œFor what?โ€ The coldness had faded from her voice.

โ€œI said this to you before, shortly after everything, but I donโ€™t think you heard me,โ€ I said. โ€œI shouldโ€™ve said it again sooner. Iโ€™m sorry for everything that has happened. Vikter was a good man. Despite the last words we exchanged, I respected him.โ€ I meant every word. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sorry that I couldnโ€™t do anything.โ€

She stiffened. โ€œHawkeโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know if me being thereโ€”like I shouldโ€™ve beenโ€”wouldโ€™ve changed the outcome,โ€ I continued, โ€œbut Iโ€™m sorry that I wasnโ€™t. That there was nothing I could do by the time Iย didย get there. Iโ€™m sorryโ€”โ€

โ€œYou have nothing to apologize for.โ€ She rose, her hands falling to the skirt of her gown. โ€œI donโ€™t blame you for what happened. Iโ€™m not mad at you.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ Part of me wished she was. I looked away from her, finding the Rise in the distance. โ€œBut that doesnโ€™t change that I wish I wouldโ€™ve done something that couldโ€™ve prevented this.โ€

โ€œThere are a lot of things I wish I wouldโ€™ve done differently,โ€ she shared. โ€œIf Iโ€™d gone to my roomโ€”โ€

โ€œIf youโ€™d gone to your room, this still wouldโ€™ve happened. Donโ€™t put

this on yourself.โ€ I turned to her. She was staring at her hands. I placed my fingers beneath her chin, gently lifting her stare to mine. โ€œYouโ€™re not to

blame for this, Poppy. Not at all. If anything, Iโ€”โ€ My heart lurched, and

my throat dried. What had I been about to say? I drew in a shallow breath. โ€œDonโ€™t take on the blame that belongs to others. You understand?โ€

Her weary eyes searched mine. โ€œTen.โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œTen times, youโ€™ve called me Poppy.โ€

I grinned, relaxing a little bit. โ€œI like calling you that, but I like calling youย Princessย more.โ€

โ€œShocker,โ€ she replied.

My gaze tracked over the lines of her brows, the delicate arch of them, and the proud scar cutting through the left one. I thought about how Iโ€™d felt after Malik had been takenโ€”after Sheaโ€™s death. There had been moments when Iโ€™d felt too much, and others when I felt nothing at all. And the latter? There had been shame in that. I imagined she was going through something similar. Grief, then nothing, and perhaps even normalcy, then guilt for feeling somewhat okay.

Holding her gaze, I lowered my chin. โ€œItโ€™s okay, you know?โ€ โ€œWhat is?โ€

โ€œEverything that youโ€™re feeling and everything that youโ€™re not.โ€

Her chest rose with a sharp inhale, then she moved fast, wrapping her

arms around me. A jolt of surprise ran through me, but before I knew it, my arms were around her. I embraced her as tightly as she held me, folding my hand around the back of her head as she pressed her cheek to my chest. She needed this.

Maybe I did, too.

We held each other for a while, and I thought that maybe in a different life, I wouldโ€™ve been built just for this.

But this wasnโ€™t my life. And it wouldnโ€™t be hers.

Leaning back, I caught sight of the wisps of hair that always seemed to escape her braid. I smoothed them back. โ€œI did come here with a purpose. The Duchess needs to speak with you.โ€

Poppy briefly closed her eyes. โ€œAnd youโ€™re just telling me now?โ€ โ€œFigured what we had to say to each other was far more important.โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t think the Duchess would agree,โ€ she said. โ€œItโ€™s time for me to

find out how Iโ€™ll be punished for what Iโ€ฆfor what I did to the Lord, isnโ€™t it?โ€

I frowned. โ€œIf I thought I was delivering you for punishment, I wouldnโ€™t be taking you there.โ€

Her eyes widened. โ€œWhere would you take me?โ€

โ€œSomewhere far from here,โ€ I said, a little stunned by the truth of my words. It caused a lurching sensation in my chest again. โ€œYouโ€™re being summoned because word has come from the capital.โ€
