โI was beginning to think something had happened to you.โ Kieran looked up from where he sat as I entered the private chamber at the Red Pearl. โI expected to hear from you sooner than this.โ
โYeah.โ Closing the door, I crossed the room and sat on the chair across from him. โThis was the first I could get away.โ
Kieran arched a brow.
Well, it had been the first time I felt comfortable leaving the castleโ leaving Poppy. She was with Tawny, and with the old servantsโ door barred, and her stash of weapons removedโwhich had been shockingly diverseโI felt confident sheโd stay put. For a little while. But I hadnโt left her unguarded. Jansen watched over her from the hall. Not that I currently worried about any threats to her. With the Duke and Mazeen both out of the picture, I was her greatest danger.
I was more concerned about her going on a rampage.
โI heard the other guard will no longer be an issue,โ Kieran stated. I took a shallow breath. โNo, he wonโt be.โ
โYou donโt sound that happy about it.โ
Feeling his stare on me, I forced a smile. โShould I be?โ
โNot overly so, but you soundโฆโ Picking up the decanter of whiskey, he poured me a drink. โRegretful.โ
I sighed, taking it. And then leaned back, holding the glass on the arm of the chair. โYou sure you donโt have a Seer in your bloodline?โ
Kieran laughed. โDoesnโt take one to notice the conflict in your voice.โ His head tilted. โOr the beard youโre growing.โ
Snorting, I ran my hand over my jaw, realizing I hadnโt shaved. I squinted, dropping my hand back to the other arm of the chair. โThe Duchess expects word from the capital either today or tomorrow.โ
โI heard.โ Kieran propped a booted foot on the low table between us. โJansen told me. Iโve also been promoted.โ He gave a broad, mocking smile. โTo Huntsmen.โ
โI donโt think thatโs considered a promotion.โ
He laughed. โNeither do I, but Iโve been cleared to escort the Maiden to the capital once the time comes.โ
Theย Maiden.
I took a drink of whiskey. The shit scorched my throat as I glanced at
the bed. I didnโt see Kieran and Circe there. I saw Poppy and me. Gods, this fucking chamber.
โYou know, we could already be gone.โ Kieran scratched at his chest. โWe should be.โ
โI know, butโฆthings got rough.โ I wasnโt sure how much Jansen had shared with Kieran, but he didnโt speak up. โHer other guard? Vikter? He was like a father to her and died in front of her.โ The second drink of whiskey was easier to swallow. โShe sort of lost it after that. Killed an
Ascended.โ
โThat, I hadnโt been told.โ His brows rose. โWhy did she do that?โ
โThe bastard laughed at Vikterโs death. She hacked him to pieces.โ A brief smile tugged at my lips. โAnd I fucking mean pieces.โ
โShit,โ he murmured. โYeah.โ
Kieran was quiet as he eyed me. Didnโt last. โAnd you couldnโt get her to the Grove in the days before you learned that the Crown would likely summon her back?โ
โCould I?โ I laughed dryly, downing the rest of the liquor. โShe was self-medicating, and before you think that wouldโve made it easier, she wasnโt eating or drinking. Having her weak for the kind of journey we have to take her on wouldnโt be good.โ
I set the glass aside. โBut here we are now, given a boon, have we not?โ โI suppose thatโs one way of looking at it, but yes. Now, we have
permission. That means we can get a hell of a lot farther before we raise any suspicion,โ he said, fingers tapping his bent knee. โBut that also means weโll have others to deal with.โ
โIt does, but we can probably make it to New Haven before she ever
finds out the truth,โ I countered. โBefore, weโd have been fighting to keep
her under control from here to thereโand trust me, we want to delay that, she can kick some ass.โ
โI imagine she can if she hacked an Ascended to pieces.โ Kieran was still eyeing me in that fucking annoyingly astute way of his. The tapping of his fingers halted, and I tensed. โYouโre acting weird, just so you know.โ
I started to deny it, but what was the point? My head was a fucking
mess. I flicked my gaze to the rafters in the ceiling. โSheโs survived some horrible shit and has the scars and strength to prove it. Sheโs brave, Kieran.
Passionate. Hungry for life and experience.โ My jaw worked. โSheโs fierce, even a little vicious when provoked.โ I paused. โOr a lot vicious. You were right when you said weโd underestimated her. Sheโs nothing like we
expected.โ
โSounds like Iโll like her.โ
โYou will.โ I smiled at that. โShe doesnโt know the truth about the Ascended, but I know she doesnโt agree with a lot of the practices, especially regarding the Rites, and even her position among them. She doesnโt understand why sheโs Chosen, and I knowโฆโ I worked my neck from side to side. โI know that if she had a choice, she wouldnโt have picked the life of the Maiden.โ
โYou sure about that?โ
โPositive.โ I exhaled roughly. โAnd even though we still donโt know why sheโs Chosen or what role she plays in the whole Ascension, itโs safe to assume itโs going to be some fucked-up shit.โ
โNo doubt.โ He reached for the decanter and poured himself a drink. โWhat are you thinking?โ
โIโm thinking sheโฆshe doesnโt deserve whatever the fuck they have planned for her. She deserves a chance to have a life,โ I said.
โWell, if the plans havenโt changed, Cas,โ he said, and my gaze shot to his. โThen what does all of that mean?โ
โNothing.โ I laughed, but the sound was without humor. โIt means nothing at the end of the day.โ
Kieran shook his head. โYou sure about that?โ
Absolutely not. It meant that Poppy deserved a future, one that allowed her to live, but that wasnโt something I would involve Kieran in.
So, I lied. โYes.โ
