A Soul of Ash and Blood (A Blood and Ash Book 5)

โ€œI really hope you donโ€™t remember much of that last part when you wake,โ€ I said, tracing the tendons of her hand.

โ€œOut of everything youโ€™ve told her, Britta in your bedchamber will be

the one thing sheโ€™ll definitely remember,โ€ Kieran said with a laugh. โ€œSheโ€™ll probably want to do some damage to that cock you keep speaking of.โ€

Chuckling, I looked over to where Kieran sat on Poppyโ€™s other side. โ€œNah, I think sheโ€™s far too interested in having my cock pierced for that.โ€

Kieran arched a brow. โ€œI would pay an insurmountable amount of coin to witness you allowing someone to pierce your dick.โ€

โ€œIt has to be fucking painful.โ€ I grinned. โ€œBut worth it.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t know about that last part, and I feel like I need to spend some time talking you out of this.โ€

Another laugh left me as I dipped my head, kissing Poppyโ€™s shoulder. โ€œI only thought of the bit with Britta because it really threw me that I wasnโ€™t down for it.โ€

โ€œYou were down for it,โ€ Kieran remarked. โ€œJust not with her.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I shifted, rising slightly on my elbow. The thick fringe of Poppyโ€™s lashes didnโ€™t flutter as I scanned her features. โ€œDo you think the shadows under her eyes have lessened?โ€

โ€œA little.โ€ He leaned over and brushed a stray wave off her cheek. โ€œI really think so.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s good.โ€ I swallowed.

โ€œItโ€™s mind-blowing what she did for you that night. What she was

capable of before all of this,โ€ Kieran said, his brows furrowing. โ€œShe gave you real peace with just a touch of her hand without even knowing what plagued you.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ My damn chest ached with the intensity of emotion swelling there. โ€œShe did it out of kindnessโ€”something she didnโ€™t have to show me,

especially when I was striving to be an utter irritation to her.โ€

โ€œYeah, but I think she liked that kind of irritation even then.โ€ A smile surfaced as I nodded. โ€œShe couldnโ€™t resist my charm.โ€ Kieran snorted.

Exhaling heavily, I looked over at him. He was watching Poppy, his features soft in a way I hadnโ€™t seen in a long time.

โ€œHave any updates for me?โ€ I asked. Heโ€™d returned in the middle of my storytelling and hadnโ€™t interrupted.

โ€œThings are calm in the city for now. Several Descenters have come out and helped with that.โ€ He scratched a hand over the shadowy growth on his jaw. โ€œDozens of Ascended have been locatedโ€”maybe even hundreds. I donโ€™t have the exact number. Still waiting on that.โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œAnd they are all basically under house arrest, as was ordered.โ€ โ€œHow did that go?โ€

โ€œFrom what I understand, many did as requested.โ€ His stare was grim. โ€œSome did not, and they met an unfortunate end.โ€

That wasnโ€™t something I would stress over. โ€œWe are giving them a chance. Thatโ€™s more than many of them would have given us.โ€

Kieran nodded. โ€œA Descenter, I think her name is Helenea? Not sure. But anyway, she went to Emil and warned him about the tunnels and how the Ascended use them to travel during the day,โ€ he told me. We expected that, but it was still good to know that we had supporters here in the city willing to help. โ€œHisa is leading a group into them now.โ€

I felt myself nodding as my hand clenched at my side.

โ€œI know itโ€™s hard,โ€ Kieran said. โ€œNot being out there while our people are taking risks. Itโ€™s hard for me, but you need to be here.โ€

โ€œWe need to be here.โ€ I forced my hand to relax. โ€œAny news on Malik?โ€ โ€œNot yet.โ€

Gods, where the fuck was he? Wherever Millicent was, which was anyoneโ€™s guess. I didnโ€™t doubt that Naill would eventually track his ass down, but I hoped it was sooner rather than later. That would be one less thing to worry about. At least for now.

โ€œYour father and the others were likely delayed at Padonia, but they will be here,โ€ Kieran said. โ€œYou should rest, Cas.โ€

โ€œHave you rested?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re not talking about me.โ€

I smirked. โ€œI did rest. While you were gone.โ€ I picked up Poppyโ€™s hand. Her skin was still cold. โ€œI fell asleep for an hour or so. I didnโ€™t walk in her dreams.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not why Iโ€™m saying you should sleep.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ I brought her hand up and pressed a kiss to her palm. โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€ I found his gaze. โ€œYou?โ€

He nodded. The thing was, though, if either of us managed to sleep

more than an hour or two, it wouldnโ€™t be restful. Not until Poppy woke up. Not until we knew.

โ€œWhen was the Rite?โ€ Kieran asked. โ€œFrom that point in your story?โ€ โ€œHell. Aboutโ€ฆtwo days, I think.โ€ I tipped my head back, delving into

my memories of that time. โ€œMiss Willa.โ€ Kieranโ€™s brows rose.

I looked down at Poppy. โ€œHer diary.โ€ My lips split into a smile. โ€œBut

there was also the meeting with you.โ€ I briefly glanced at Kieran. โ€œAnd the night before that.โ€
