Chapter no 63: Walking and Talking

The Name of the Wind

WILEM AND SIMMON WERE already well into their lunches when I arrived at our usual spot in the courtyard. โ€œSorry,โ€ I said as I set my lute on the cobblestones near the bench. โ€œGot caught up haggling.โ€

I had been on the other side of the river buying a dram of quicksilver and a pouch of sea salt. The last had cost me dearly, but for once I wasnโ€™t concerned about money. If fortune smiled on me, I would be moving up the ranks in the Fishery soon, and that meant my money troubles would soon be over.

While shopping in Imre, I had also, quite by coincidence, wandered past the inn where Denna was staying, but she hadnโ€™t been there, or at the Eolian, or in the park where weโ€™d stopped to talk last night. All the same, I was in a fine mood.

I tipped my lute case onto its side and flipped it open so the sun could warm the new strings, helping them stretch. Then I settled onto the stone bench under the pennant pole next to my two friends.

โ€œSo where were you last night?โ€ Simmon asked too casually.

It was only then I remembered that the three of us had planned to meet up with Fenton and play corners last night. Seeing Denna had completely driven the plan from my mind. โ€œOh God, Iโ€™m sorry Sim. How long did you wait for me?โ€

He gave me a look.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I repeated, hoping I looked as guilty as I felt. โ€œI forgot.โ€

Sim grinned, shrugging it off. โ€œItโ€™s not a big deal. When we figured out you werenโ€™t going to show, we went to the Library to drink and look at girls.โ€

โ€œWas Fenton mad?โ€

โ€œFurious,โ€ Wilem said calmly, finally entering the conversation. โ€œSaid he was going to box your ears next time he saw you.โ€

Simโ€™s grin widened. โ€œHe called you a fluff-headed Eโ€™lir with no respect for his betters.โ€

โ€œMade claims about your parentage and s*xual tendency toward animals,โ€ Wilem said with a straight face.

โ€œโ€˜โ€ฆin the Tehlinโ€™s cassock!โ€™โ€ Simmon sang with his mouth full. Then he

laughed and started to choke. I pounded him on the back.

โ€œWhere were you?โ€ Wilem asked while Sim tried to get his breath back. โ€œAnker said you left early.โ€

For some reason, I found myself reluctant to talk about Denna. โ€œI met someone.โ€

โ€œSomeone more important than us?โ€ Wilem asked in a flat tone that could be taken for dry humor or criticism.

โ€œA girl,โ€ I admitted.

One of his eyebrows went up. โ€œThe one youโ€™ve been chasing around?โ€

โ€œI havenโ€™t beenย chasingย anyone,โ€ I protested. โ€œShe found me, at Ankerโ€™s.โ€ โ€œGood sign,โ€ Wilem said.

Simmon nodded wisely then looked up with a playful glint in his eye. โ€œSo did you make any music?โ€ He nudged me with an elbow and wagged his eyebrows up and down. โ€œA little duet?โ€

He looked too ridiculous for me to be offended. โ€œNo music. She just wanted someone to walk her home.โ€

โ€œWalk her home?โ€ He said suggestively, wagging his eyebrows again.

I found it less amusing this time. โ€œIt was dark out,โ€ I said seriously. โ€œI just escorted her back to Imre.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ Sim said, disappointed.

โ€œYou left Ankerโ€™s early,โ€ Wil said slowly. โ€œAnd we waited for an hour.

Does it take you two hours to walk to Imre and back?โ€ โ€œIt was a long walk,โ€ I admitted.

โ€œHow long is long?โ€ Simmon asked. โ€œA few hours.โ€ I looked away. โ€œSix.โ€

โ€œSix hours?โ€ Sim asked. โ€œCome on, I think Iโ€™m entitled to a few details after listening to you ramble on about her for the last two span.โ€

I began to bristle. โ€œI donโ€™t ramble. We just walked,โ€ I said. โ€œTalked.โ€ Sim looked doubtful. โ€œOh comeย on.ย For six hours?โ€

Wilem tapped Simmonโ€™s shoulder. โ€œHeโ€™s telling the truth.โ€ Simmon glanced over at him. โ€œWhy do you say that?โ€ โ€œHe sounds more sincere than that when he lies.โ€

โ€œIf the two of you will be quiet for a minute or so Iโ€™ll tell you the whole of it. Fair?โ€ They nodded. I looked down at my hands, trying to collect my thoughts, but they wouldnโ€™t fall into any sort of orderly pattern. โ€œWe took the long way back to Imre, stopped on Stonebridge for a while. Went to a park outside town. Sat by the river. We talked aboutโ€ฆnothing really. Places weโ€™ve been. Songsโ€ฆโ€ I realized I was rambling and shut my mouth. I picked my next words carefully. โ€œI thought about doing more than walking and talking butโ€”โ€ I stopped. I had no idea what to say.

They were both silent for a moment. โ€œIโ€™ll be,โ€ Wilem marveled. โ€œThe mighty Kvothe, brought low by a woman.โ€

โ€œIf I didnโ€™t know you, Iโ€™d think you were scared,โ€ Simmon said not quite seriously.

โ€œYouโ€™re damn right Iโ€™m scared,โ€ I said in a low voice, wiping my hands nervously against my pants. โ€œYouโ€™d be too if youโ€™d ever met her. Itโ€™s all I can do to sit here instead of running off to Imre, hoping to see her through a store window, or pass her crossing the street.โ€ I gave a shaky smile.

โ€œGo then.โ€ Simmon smiled and gave me a little push. โ€œGodspeed. If I knew a woman like that I wouldnโ€™t be here eating lunch with the likes of you two.โ€ He brushed his hair away from his eyes and gave me another push with his free hand. โ€œGo on.โ€

I stayed where I was. โ€œItโ€™s not that easy.โ€ โ€œNothingโ€™s ever easy with you,โ€ Wilem muttered.

โ€œOf course itโ€™s that easy,โ€ Simmon laughed. โ€œGo tell her some of what you just told us.โ€

โ€œRight,โ€ I said with dark sarcasm. โ€œAs if it were simple as singing. Besides, I donโ€™t know if she would want to hear it. Sheโ€™s something specialโ€ฆ. What would she want with me?โ€

Simmon gave me a frank stare, โ€œShe came looking for you. She obviously wants something.โ€

There was a moment of silence and I hurried to change the subject while I had the chance. โ€œManetโ€™s given me permission to start my journeyman project.โ€

โ€œAlready?โ€ Sim gave me an anxious look. โ€œWill Kilvin go along with it?

Heโ€™s not a big one for cutting corners.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t cut any corners,โ€ I said. โ€œI just pick things up quickly.โ€

Wilem gave an amused snort and Sim spoke up before the two of us started to bicker. โ€œWhat are you doing for your project? Sympathy lamp?โ€

โ€œEveryone does a lamp,โ€ Wilem said.

I nodded. โ€œI wanted to do something different, maybe a gearwin, but Manet told me to stick to the lamp.โ€ The belling tower struck four. I got to my feet and gathered up my lute case, ready to head to class.

โ€œYou should tell her,โ€ Simmon said. โ€œIf you like a girl you have to let her know.โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s that working out for you so far?โ€ I said, irritated that Sim of all people would presume to give me relationship advice. โ€œStatistically speaking, how often has that strategy paid off, in your vast experience?โ€

Wilem made a point of looking elsewhere while Sim and I glared at each other. I looked away first, feeling guilty.

โ€œBesides, thereโ€™s nothing to tell,โ€ I muttered. โ€œI like spending time with her, and now I know where sheโ€™s staying. That means I can find her when I go looking.โ€
