Chapter no 39 – THE GANGโ€™S ALL HERE

Things We Hide from the Light (Knockemout Series, 2)

Lina

โ€œYย ouโ€™re a bad influence,โ€ Nash complained, fumbling with his keys.

โ€œAt least it was only Nolan,โ€ I reminded him as I waited for him to

unlock his apartment door.

Nashโ€™s U.S. marshal babysitter had been none too pleased to return from the restaurant bathroom to find us gone. Heโ€™d only found the situation slightly funnier when he walked up to the driverโ€™s side window. It hadnโ€™t taken a brain surgeon to know what weโ€™d been up to.

Nash opened the door and gestured for me to enter first. Piper met me at the door, proudly carrying a small, stuffed police dog in her mouth.

โ€œThat oneโ€™s new,โ€ I noted, leaning down to ruffle her wiry fur.

โ€œSaw it on Amazon,โ€ Nash said, shutting the door and hanging his keys on the hook.

โ€œAre you ever not hard?โ€ I asked, noting the obvious situation in his pants.

His grin was downright evil when he reached for me. โ€œYou have a choice.โ€

โ€œExplain.โ€

โ€œEither I go down on you here against the door or in the bedroom.โ€ His hands were already reaching for the hem of my dress.

โ€œWait. Wait. Wait.โ€

To his credit, he stopped immediately. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œAs much as I really,ย reallyย want to take your new, smooth face for a test driveโ€ฆโ€ I shook my head. โ€œI canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m saying this. But I think we need to talk.โ€

Nashโ€™s lips quirked. โ€œJust what the hell did they put in that wine?โ€

I shoved my hands into my hair. โ€œObviously, Iโ€™ve been abducted by aliens and replaced with a not-very-convincing clone. But weโ€™ve been too busy orgasming to talk.โ€

โ€œAbout what?โ€

โ€œAbout the plan to take down Hugo. I was serious when I said I wanted in. And as much as I want in your pants again and again, this is important. Important enough not to let you distract me with your magic penis.โ€

His eyes went from a blazing intensity to amused. โ€œYouโ€™re one of a kind, Angel.โ€

โ€œUh-uh, Studly Do-Right. No distracting me with compliments. Rally the troops while I take Piper out.โ€

โ€œNow?โ€

I grabbed Piperโ€™s leash from the hook. โ€œYes. Now,โ€ I said firmly.

I returned from my walk around the block with Piper and a

nagging guilty conscience. โ€œNash? Before everyone gets here, thereโ€™s something I need to tell you.โ€

Nash was hanging Duncan Hugoโ€™s photo on the whiteboard heโ€™d set up next to the table. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

I was pretty sure Iโ€™d done the right thing, but I had a feeling he might not see it that way. โ€œOkay. So in school after the whole heart-stopping thing, I didnโ€™t really fit in. And besides work, I never really belonged socially.โ€

He was watching me intently now.

โ€œI guess what Iโ€™m trying to say is Iโ€™m new at this. Iโ€™m new to whatever is going on between us. Iโ€™m new to having friends like Naomi and Sloane.โ€

Nashโ€™s eyes closed slowly and then reopened. He rubbed the spot between his eyebrows. โ€œWhat did you do, Angelina?โ€

โ€œJust hear me out,โ€ I began. But I was interrupted by a loud knock.

Piper went scrambling for Nash.

โ€œItโ€™s nine oโ€™clock on a school night,โ€ Knox complained as I let him in. โ€œIโ€™ll take Words by the Domesticated Knox Morgan for two hundred,

Alex,โ€ I quipped. I was just shutting the door when Lucian appeared in it. โ€œHow the hell did you get here so fast?โ€ I asked him.

โ€œI worked remotely from here today.โ€ โ€œYou worked remotely in a suit?โ€

โ€œNice earrings,โ€ he said.

I narrowed my eyes in suspicion. โ€œWhy are you being nice to me?โ€

โ€œBecause of that.โ€ He nodded over my shoulder at Nash, who was offering his brother a beer and smiling while doing it. โ€œDonโ€™t fuck it up.โ€

He crossed to his friends and I closed the door feeling guilty. โ€œSo, guys.

Before we start, I should probably tell you allโ€”โ€ I was interrupted by another knock.

Lucian stopped trying to coax Piper out from behind Nashโ€™s legs and frowned. โ€œIs that Graham?โ€

โ€œWe know youโ€™re in there.โ€ Sloaneโ€™s voice carried from the other side of the door.

Nash headed for me and the door.

โ€œThatโ€™s what I wanted to tell you,โ€ I said, grabbing his arm.

He looked through the peephole and then shot me a โ€œyou didnโ€™tโ€ look. โ€œI did,โ€ I confessed.

โ€œDid what?โ€ Knox asked, crossing his arms.

โ€œThis,โ€ Nash said, opening the door to Naomi, Sloane, and Mrs.

Tweedy.

โ€œOkay. To clarify, I didnโ€™t text Mrs. Tweedy,โ€ I said.

Knox looked concerned. Lucian looked ready to commit murder. And Nash, well, Nash looked at me and rolled his eyes.

โ€œDaisy, baby, what the fuck are you doinโ€™ here?โ€ Knox demanded, closing the distance between them.

She crossed her arms over her pretty violet sweater. โ€œLina texted us.โ€

Sloane, dressed in plaid pajama joggers and a matching top, put her hands on her hips. โ€œYou penises arenโ€™t shutting us out of whatever the hell this is.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just here โ€™cause it looked like a party from my peephole. I brought booze,โ€ Mrs. Tweedy announced, holding up a bottle of bourbon.

I winced as three grumpy, male gazes landed on me. โ€œAngelina,โ€ Nash began.

I held up my hands. โ€œHear me out. This involves all of us in one way or another except for Mrs. Tweedy. And Naomi and Sloane deserve to know whatโ€™s going on. The more heads we can put together on this, the more eyes and ears we have around town, the better prepared weโ€™ll be.โ€

The men continued to glare at me.

โ€œNo one knows this town and what goes on in it better than Sloane. And Naomi earned her way here by being a target. She shouldnโ€™t be kept in the dark. The more she knows, the safer she can be and the better she can protect Waylay,โ€ I insisted.

โ€œYouโ€™re not leaving me out of whatever this is. If it has anything to do with my sister or her shitty ex, I deserve to know whatโ€™s going on,โ€ Naomi insisted to Knox.

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry about this, Daze,โ€ he assured her, gripping her gently by the biceps. โ€œIโ€™ve got this. Iโ€™ve got you and Way. You need to trust me to take care of this.โ€

Naomiโ€™s face softened momentarily before going grumpy again. โ€œAndย youย need to trustย me. Iโ€™m not a child. I deserve full disclosure and open lines of communication.โ€

Sloane hooked her thumb in Naomiโ€™s direction. โ€œYeah. What she said.โ€ โ€œThis has nothing to do with you. When are you going to learn to mind

your own business?โ€ Lucian said, addressing Sloane in a tone so icy I almost shivered.

Well, at least the big guy was pissed at someone besides me for once. Sloane, however, appeared to be immune to the Rollins freeze. โ€œShut it,

Satan. If it involves my town and people I care about, it involves me. I wouldnโ€™t expect you to understand that.โ€

The stare off began and I wondered whose neck would get tired first, given their height difference.

Nash strode over and took me by the wrist. โ€œExcuse us for a second,โ€ he announced and dragged me into the bedroom. He shut the door, pushed me against it, and then boxed me in with his palms on either side of my head. โ€œExplain.โ€

โ€œYou seem mad. Maybe we should talk later?โ€ โ€œWeโ€™ll talk now, Angel.โ€

โ€œThey had a right to know.โ€

โ€œExplain why you talked to them before you talked to me.โ€ โ€œHonestly?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s try that for a change,โ€ he said dryly.

โ€œIโ€™m not really sure what the hierarchy of loyalty is in this situation. Naomi and Sloane are my first real friends in a long time and Iโ€™m out of practice. But I know how much it hurt you when I kept you in the dark. I got a taste of that when you were off plotting without me. Andโ€”โ€

He pinned my hips to the door with his with a thump.

โ€œAre they fucking in there?โ€ I heard Knox ask from the other room. โ€œAnd what?โ€ Nash asked me.

โ€œAnd they should know. And I get that youโ€™re mad and Iโ€™m sorry for not raising this with you first.โ€

โ€œI appreciate that and youโ€™re not wrong,โ€ he said, brushing my hair back from my forehead in a gesture so gentle my knees went weak.

โ€œIโ€™m not?โ€

A smile tugged on the corner of his mouth. โ€œNo. But next time, letโ€™s have the conversation first.โ€

He was so damn handsome and so damnโ€ฆgood. No wonder Iโ€™d fallen in L-word with the man.

I managed a nod. โ€œYep. Got it.โ€

He cupped my face in his hand. โ€œYou and I are in this together. When our decisions affect each other, weย make them together. Understand?โ€

I nodded my head vigorously.

โ€œGood,โ€ he said, pulling me away from the door. He gave my ass a stinging slap. โ€œConsider that a low five.โ€

โ€œOuch!โ€

โ€œShe either slapped him or he spanked her,โ€ Sloane said in the other room.

โ€œNow, letโ€™s get back out there and figure this shit out.ย Together,โ€ Nash said firmly.

โ€œOkay.โ€

He paused. โ€œIs there anything else you need to tell me before we go back out there?โ€

I opened my mouth just as another knock sounded on the front door. โ€œI swear this one isnโ€™t me,โ€ I insisted.

He grinned and opened the bedroom door.

Nolan strolled inside and Knox closed the door behind him. The marshal stopped and eyed the gathering, the whiteboard, and Mrs. Tweedy mixing up a pitcher of old-fashioneds. โ€œIโ€™m gonna hate this, arenโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œNot as much as I already do,โ€ Knox told him. โ€œHi, Nolan,โ€ Sloane said with a pretty smile. โ€œHey, cupcake.โ€

Lucian remained silent, but the โ€œIโ€™m about to explodeโ€ vibes were a tangible presence in the room.

โ€œIโ€™ll get more beers,โ€ I said, deliberately stepping between Lucian and Nolan, who seemed unaware that his life hung in the balance.

โ€œYou know the basics. This is your last chance to bail before shit gets real,โ€ Nash said to Nolan as I headed for the kitchen. โ€œIn or out.โ€

โ€œIn,โ€ he said without hesitation.

โ€œNolan, this could get you in serious trouble,โ€ I warned, pulling a six- pack out of the fridge. โ€œYour bosses wonโ€™t like your involvement in this.โ€

Nolan spread his arms. โ€œI donโ€™t know if youโ€™ve noticed, but my job sucks. It cost me my marriage. It ruined any hope I have for the world in general. And sleeping in one-star roach motels has destroyed my back. I already have my resignation drafted. Iโ€™m just waiting to get drunk enough or fed up enough to send it up the chain. Besides, Iโ€™m tired of babysitting.โ€

Nash and I exchanged a look and he nodded. I handed Nolan a beer. โ€œWelcome to the team.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know what the hell you kids are talkinโ€™ about, but Iโ€™m on the team too,โ€ Mrs. Tweedy announced.

I shrugged at Nash and he rolled his eyes. We both knew there was no easy way of giving her the boot.

โ€œFine,โ€ Nash said to her. โ€œBut you canโ€™t repeat anything you hear tonight. Not to your gym buddies. Not to your poker pals. No one.โ€

โ€œSheesh. I got it already. Letโ€™s talk turkey.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s get this over with,โ€ Knox muttered and pulled a chair out for Naomi.

We sat around the table with bourbon and beers and listened as Nash walked us all through the events of the past few days, then laid out the basic plan theyโ€™d come up with.

โ€œI hate it,โ€ Sloane announced when he was finished.

Naomi was wide-eyed and gripping Knoxโ€™s hand. โ€œYou canโ€™t be serious, Nash. You canโ€™t just dangle yourself out there as bait. He almost killed you once.โ€

โ€œAnd this time, Iโ€™ll be ready for him,โ€ Nash said gently. โ€œWe all will,โ€ I promised.

Naomi turned beseeching eyes to Knox. โ€œBut if Nash is a target, a loose end, so is Way.โ€

โ€œSo are you,โ€ Lucian said.

Knox dragged her into his side. โ€œLook at me, Daze. No one is getting near either of you. I promise you that. Theyโ€™d have to get through me first, and no one is fucking getting through me.โ€

โ€œHe shot Nash,โ€ she said, her eyes welling with tears.

โ€œHeโ€™s not gettinโ€™ a second chance there either,โ€ Knox promised. His gaze went to his brother and they shared a long look.

Naomi closed her eyes and leaned into Knoxโ€™s chest. โ€œI canโ€™t believe all this is happening because of my sister. I feel like I brought this on all of you.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t take responsibility for another adultโ€™s bad decisions,โ€ Nash told her. His gaze shifted to me. โ€œAll you can do is try to make good ones for yourself.โ€

โ€œI want one thing straight,โ€ Knox said. โ€œNone of this goes down before the wedding Saturday. Nothing fucks up Daisyโ€™s day.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s your day too, Knox,โ€ Naomi said, leaning into him.

โ€œDamn right it is. And nothing and nobody is going to ruin it. Agreed?โ€ He looked around the table, making sure each of us nodded our agreement.

โ€œWeโ€™ll put everything in motion Monday,โ€ Nash said. โ€œOkay. Then we should talk about preparation,โ€ I suggested.

Nash nodded. โ€œWeโ€™re all part of the team. Weโ€™ve all got a job to do, otherwise why are we here?โ€

โ€œBecause Lina opened her big mouth and dragged them into it,โ€ Knox said.

โ€œLina saved you a week of sleeping on the couch, which is exactly what youโ€™d deserve if youโ€™d gotten away with keeping me in the dark on this one. So you should be thanking her,โ€ Naomi pointed out.

Knox looked at me and used his middle finger to rub at the corner of his eye. โ€œThanks, Leens,โ€ he said.

โ€œYouโ€™re so welcome,โ€ I said sweetly, lifting my glass with middle finger extended.

โ€œLetโ€™s get back to assignments,โ€ Nolan suggested. โ€œGo on,โ€ Nash prompted me.

I blinked. โ€œI donโ€™t reallyโ€ฆ Iโ€™m not comfortableโ€ฆโ€ โ€œBut you know what needs to be done,โ€ he insisted.

โ€œRight,โ€ I said. โ€œOkay then. Nash, youโ€™re going to get access to the case file the Lawlerville PD started before the feds muscled their way in. Maybe thereโ€™s something in there that will tell us where Hugo went.โ€

He nodded his agreement and I blew out a breath. โ€œKeep going,โ€ he prompted.

I turned to Nolan. โ€œNolan, you use your charm and connections to see what information you can get on the case the feds are building against Anthony Hugo. Whoโ€™s feeding them information, and how are they getting it?โ€

โ€œOn it,โ€ he said, stroking his mustache. โ€œSloane?โ€

โ€œLay it on me,โ€ she said, holding a pen poised over the notebook sheโ€™d dug out of her purse.

โ€œWe need people in town on the lookout for Duncan Hugo and his henchmen. The earlier the warning we have, the more time we have to prepare. Grim already agreed to continue keeping tabs on the Hugosโ€™ men. If any of them head in our direction, weโ€™ll know. But we need people here who can keep their eyes and ears open and their mouths shut.โ€

โ€œOoooh! Pick me! Pick me!โ€ Mrs. Tweedy said, coming halfway out of her seat, hand raised like an eager student.

โ€œOkay. Mrs. Tweedy is our first official spy,โ€ Sloane agreed.

โ€œThat means you canโ€™t be blabbing about this to anyone,โ€ Knox reminded his elderly tenant.

โ€œI know when to blab and when to keep my trap shut,โ€ she shot back.

โ€œChoose people you know you can trust not to run their mouths about this. The last thing we need is a whole town looking for a fight,โ€ Nash cautioned Sloane.

โ€œMaybe we can spin a few tall tales to a couple big-mouthed gossips so they can be on the lookout without knowing exactly why,โ€ Mrs. Tweedy suggested.

โ€œHow would that work?โ€ I asked.

โ€œTake Face Tattoo Guy. I can casually mention to Neecey at Dinoโ€™s that I heard a guy with face tattoos is looking to buy up acres of farmland to build a bunch of hipster condominiums and vape shops.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not a terrible idea,โ€ Lucian and Sloane said at the same time.

They shared a long, simmering glare. โ€œKnox,โ€ I continued.

He still had Naomi glued to his side with one tattooed arm around her shoulders. โ€œLetโ€™s have it, boss.โ€

โ€œLocal security. Beef up the system at your place and here at Nashโ€™s. Lucian, can you find a way to track Nash, Naomi, and Waylay in case they get separated from their phones?โ€

Nashโ€™s eyes swung back to me. โ€œNow hold on a minute. Iโ€™ve already got a federal shadowโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t bother arguing,โ€ Naomi said to him. โ€œIf itโ€™s a precaution Waylay and I have to take, you have to take it too.โ€

โ€œI have access to some interesting technology that might help,โ€ Lucian volunteered.

โ€œGreat. Knox, work with Lucian on that,โ€ I said.

โ€œWhat do you want me to do?โ€ Naomi asked me. โ€œAnd donโ€™t even think about leaving me out of this.โ€

I looked at Nash for help.

โ€œSelf-defense,โ€ he said. โ€œYou and Waylay are gonna sign up with Fiโ€™s jujitsu instructor for private lessons.โ€ Knox opened his mouth to argue, but Nash shook his head. โ€œHugoโ€™s not going to get near either of you. But weโ€™re taking zero chances.โ€

โ€œI look forward to building on my knee-balls-nose repertoire,โ€ Naomi said.

Sloane yawned and looked at her watch. โ€œOkay. We have our assignments. Letโ€™s nail this asshole.โ€

There was a murmur of agreement around the table.

Mrs. Tweedy noisily slurped up the remainder of her bourbon. โ€œCome on, Daze. Letโ€™s get you to bed,โ€ Knox said.

The way he said it and the way she looked at him made me think sleep was the last thing either of them had in mind.

Sloane stuffed her notebook back into her bag. โ€œIโ€™ll start a WhatsApp group so we can keep everyone updated.โ€

โ€œGood thinking,โ€ Nash said.

โ€œGraham,โ€ Nash said to Nolan, jerking his head toward the kitchen. โ€œA word,โ€ Lucian said, appearing at my elbow.

โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s my real assignment?โ€

My smile was slow and smug. โ€œI didnโ€™t want to make the ask in front of a U.S. marshal, even if he is batting for our team.โ€

โ€œI gathered as much.โ€

โ€œCan you dedicate your creepy shadow network of intel gathering to finding a man with no name and no picture?โ€ I explained Duncanโ€™s faceless, burner phone friend. โ€œHeโ€™s the only one I couldnโ€™t track down, and that makes me think heโ€™s the one we need to find.โ€

โ€œSend everything you have over to me, and Iโ€™ll get my team started immediately.โ€

โ€œGood. Oh, and how do you feel about keeping an eye on Sloane? The rest of us are either trained to deal with this or live with someone who is. Sloaneโ€™s by herself, and since you stay next door to her when youโ€™re in town, youโ€™re the most convenient candidate.โ€

Icy fire danced in Lucianโ€™s eyes. โ€œNo one will get near her,โ€ he promised.

โ€œSheโ€™ll probably give you shit about the attention,โ€ I warned.

Something that almost looked like a smile played over his handsome face. But then it was gone. โ€œI wonโ€™t be run off as easily this time.โ€

Personally, I was dying to know what other time he was thinking about and how a five-foot-two-inch woman had run off Lucian โ€œLuciferโ€ Rollins. But it didnโ€™t seem like the time for questions.

We said goodbye as everyone except for Nolan filed out the door, a buzz of purpose and anticipation between them.

Sloane paused in the open doorway. โ€œStill up for being my date to the wedding Saturday?โ€ she called to Nolan, who was lounging against the kitchen island.

โ€œWouldnโ€™t miss it for the world, cupcake.โ€ โ€œPick me up atโ€”โ€

Lucian slammed the door, cutting Sloane off midsentence.

โ€œThose two are going to implode one day. Right, Pipe?โ€ I asked the dog that was tap-dancing playfully at my feet.

โ€œAngel, I need your key,โ€ Nash called.

โ€œDoorโ€™s unlocked,โ€ I told him, meeting him and Nolan in the kitchen. โ€œGood. Go get your stuff and bring back your key,โ€ he said.

โ€œMy stuff?โ€

โ€œGrahamโ€™s taking over your place until this is over. Itโ€™ll help to have him closer than the motel.โ€

โ€œNot gonna lie. Iโ€™m lookinโ€™ forward to a real bed and not having to stomp on half a dozen roaches before my shower,โ€ Nolan said cheerfully.

โ€œUh, you get the couch, my friend,โ€ I told him.

โ€œNo. He gets your place,โ€ Nash countered. โ€œYouโ€™re staying with me.โ€

โ€œYou expect me toย move in with you?โ€ My voice went up an octave. I instantly began to sweat.

โ€œOn that note, Iโ€™ll go get my shit. Be back here in however long it takes to scare the rats out of my suitcase,โ€ Nolan announced and ran for the door.

โ€œFight me on this,โ€ Nash dared me.

โ€œI canโ€™t just move in with you, Nash. Thatโ€™s insane. We barely made it through the day without fighting, and you want to share a bathroom with me? Doย notย smile at me likeย Iโ€™mย the crazy one!โ€ I could hear the hysterical tinge to my words but there was no dialing it back.

He was still smiling, but now he was heading toward me.

I held up my hands and began to back away. โ€œItโ€™s one thing to accidentally fall asleep after sex, but to bring my clothes here andโ€ฆ Do you even have closet space? I canโ€™t just leave my things in a suitcase. They need to breathe.โ€

Iย needed to breathe.

Nash caught me, his hands settling on my hips and tugging me closer. I hated the fact that I instantly felt calmer.

โ€œTake a breath,โ€ he insisted.

I sucked in a tiny, useless inhalation.

โ€œYouโ€™re adorable when you freak out.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not freaking out. Iโ€™mโ€ฆprocessing your ludicrous suggestion.โ€

โ€œIf it makes you feel better, this is just temporary,โ€ he said, his voice annoyingly calm.

Temporary. Temporary. Temporary. Just like our relationship. One day at a time untilโ€ฆafter.

Nash brought my hands to the back of his neck and then began to sway. โ€œWhy do you keep slow dancing with me?โ€

โ€œBecause I like being close to you even when we have all our clothes on.โ€

โ€œThis canโ€™t be the best solution,โ€ I insisted. โ€œWhy donโ€™t we all move in to the motel?โ€

โ€œHe wasnโ€™t joking about the rats,โ€ Nash pointed out.

โ€œOkay, fine. Weโ€™ll all move in with Naomi and Knox. Theyโ€™ve got room.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t think thatโ€™ll get the entire town talking? The whole point of this is to make things look as normal as possible from the outside.โ€

โ€œWhat isย normalย about this?โ€ I demanded. โ€œBesides, wonโ€™t people start talking about Nolan staying at my place? I mean, theyโ€™ll think Iโ€™m sleeping with you both. Or that weโ€™re in some weird throuple.โ€

โ€œOr theyโ€™ll think my federally issued protection is staying with me to protect me. Or theyโ€™ll think you and I are serious and Nolan wanted to get out of the roach motel.โ€

Damn it. Heโ€™d thought of everything. The sneaky, conniving son of a bitch.

I was impressed. And terrified.

โ€œIโ€™m not going to become Suzy Homemaker and suddenly learn to cook,โ€ I warned.

โ€œNoted.โ€

โ€œAnd you better not use your bathroom floor for a hamper. I saw Mount St. Dirty Clothes the day we brought Piper home.โ€

โ€œDo I need to get the broccoli out of the freezer?โ€ he asked, rubbing his cheek against the top of my head.

โ€œNo. Maybe.โ€
