I was not in the mood for breakfast food or the cheerful pop music on the dinerโs speakers. For the second day in a row, I hadnโt woken up with that horrible crunching sound echoing in my head.
Instead, Iโd woken up to Lina. And my asshole friend had ruined it. โWhereโs your marshal shadow?โ my asshole friend asked.
โProbably still in bed. Whereย Iย should be. You interrupted something.โ โYou should be thanking me.โ
โHave you lost your fucking mind?โ I said just as the server approached.
โI can give you another minute,โ he said hesitantly.
โCoffee. Black. Please,โ I added as I slid my menu to the edge of the table and glared at Lucian.
โWeโll both have the smoked salmon eggs Benedict with yogurt and berries,โ my cockblocking friend said.
โSure thing,โ the kid said before he hustled away.
Lucian had a way of intimidating and impressing people. Often both at the same time. Today, however, he was only pissing me off.
I scrubbed a hand over my face. โWhat the hell is going on with you?โ โIโm here to ask you that very question,โ he said, frowning down at his
phone before tucking it into his suit jacket.
โYouโre like a vampire who stays up plotting how to cockblock his best friends.โ
โYouโve spent two nights in bed with her andโโ
โHow do you know I spent two nights in bed with her?โ I interrupted. โTwo nights in bed with who?โ My brother slid into the booth next to
me looking pissed off and like heโd just rolled out of bed. โWhat are you doing here?โ I demanded.
He yawned and signaled for coffee. โLucy called. Said it was important.
Two nights in bed with who?โ
โIโm not talking about it. And how in the fuck do you know what my sleeping arrangements are?โ I asked, turning back to Lucian.
โInformation finds its way to me.โ
โI swear to God, if Mrs. Tweedy is listening at my door with a drinking glassโโ
โWhat the hell is going on with you two?โ my brother cut in. The server returned with coffee for all.
โCan I get you anything for breakfast?โ he asked Knox. โMaybe after I find out who my brotherโs taking to bed.โ
โJesus. Itโs nobodyโs business who Iโm taking to bed. What I want to know is why in the hell Lucian showed up at Linaโs door at six in the morning and dragged me out of bed for fucking breakfast.โ
โYou were at Linaโs at six in the morning?โ Knox didnโt sound happy about that.
โFrankly, I wouldnโt have had to be there if my lunch with your bedmate had gone better yesterday,โ Lucian said, sounding annoyed.
I was considering lunging across the table and grabbing him by the lapels of his fancy-ass suit when the server wisely decided to disappear.
โWhy are we here? What are you doing having lunch with Lina? And what the fuck does that have to do with you suddenly having a hankering for eggs Benedict?โ
โWhy the fuck were you at Linaโs at 6:00 a.m.? And the answer better not be that sheโs the one youโre banging,โ Knox snarled.
Lucian cocked an eyebrow at me and picked up his mug. โShe told you we had lunch, but she didnโt tell you why? Interesting.โ
โNone of this is interesting to me. Either get to the point or get out of my way,โ I said.
โIf someone doesnโt start answering questions, Iโm gonna start throwinโ punches,โ Knox warned.
โThings arenโt right with him,โ Lucian said, pointing to me. โThey havenโt been since the shooting.โ
โNo fucking shit, Sherlock. Some asshole put two holes in me. It takes a while to come back from that.โ
โYou say that as if youโre trying.โ
A white-hot anger clawed its way to life under my skin. Next to me, my brother tensed.
โFuck you, Lucy,โ I said. โI am trying. Iโm doing my PT. Iโm going to the gym. Iโm going to work.โ
He shook his head. โPhysically, youโre healing. But mentally? Youโre not the same. You hide it. But the cracks are starting to show.โ
โIโm gonna need something stronger than coffee if weโre having this conversation,โ Knox muttered.
I picked up my coffee and considered whipping it at him. โGet to the point, Lucy.โ
โYou donโt need distractions. You need closure. You need to remember.
You need to find Hugo. And you need to get him off the street.โ
โGetting Hugo off the street doesnโt change a damn thing about whatโs already happened. Andย how the hellย is remembering what happened going to put me back together again?โ
Did that blank spot in my memory hold the key? If I finally remembered how it felt to face death, would I be ready to live again? Wasnโt that part of what I was struggling with? I could put criminals behind bars, but that didnโt undo what theyโd already done. I could stop them from doing it again, but I couldnโt prevent the first.
I must have raised my voice because the couple at the table next to us turned to look at me.
โI canโt believe you got me out of bed with Naomi for this,โ Knox complained.
โSame here.โ
โYour brother was in bed with Lina,โ Lucian tattled.
โThe fuck he was. The fuck you were,โ Knox said, swinging my way. โDonโt you fucking start,โ I warned.
โI told you to stay away from her.โ โI told her the same,โ Lucian said.
โWhat? Why?โ Knox and I snapped together. โSame team, Knox,โ Lucian reminded him.
โDid you threaten her?โ I asked, my voice low and dangerous. โYouโre damn right I did.โ
โWhat the fuck is wrong with you? Both of you,โ my brother demanded.
โSheโs taking advantage of you,โ Lucian insisted.
โYouโre really starting to piss me off, Lucy,โ I warned. โGood. Thatโs a start.โ
โYou are not to go near Lina again,โ I told him. โYou canโt fucking threaten people on my behalf. Especially not her.โ
โI canโt believe youโre sleeping with Lina after I told you not to,โ Knox growled.
โAnd you canโt bury your head in the sand hoping things will get better. Your father spent the last few decades numbing himself to life. What youโre doing isnโt much different,โ Lucian said.
A charged silence fell over our table as we glared at each other.
โIโm depressed. Okay, you fucking assholes? My life has been one big black hole since I woke up in that hospital bed. Happy now?โ It was the first time Iโd admitted it out loud. I didnโt much care for it.
โDo I look happy?โ
To his credit, Lucian looked miserable.
โTell me what any of this has to do with Lina,โ my brother said, his face in his hands.
โI donโt believe sheโs being truthful. I have concerns she could take advantage of you when youโreโฆlike this. She shows up in town a day before Hugo made a move on Naomi and Waylay. She didnโt tell you about her real job. She moves in next door. And she just so happens to have a history with the marshal assigned to you.โ
โShe also picked my ass up off the floor, got me upstairs, and helped me through a fucking panic attack two nights ago. I donโt know what the fuck it is about her but the closer I am to her, the better I feel. The easier it is to get out of bed and force myself to go through the motions. So while Iย appreciateย your concern, Iโll point out that sheโs been there for me in a way no one else has been. Not you. Not Knox. No one.โ
Lina made me feel like a man, not like the broken shell of one. Lucianโs jaw tightened beneath his neatly trimmed beard.
โTwo smoked salmon eggs Benedicts.โ The server appeared with our breakfast.
โThanks,โ I said flatly when it became clear Lucian wasnโt going to. โCan I get you anything else right now? More coffee? Napkins to mop
up any future bloodshed? No? Okay then.โ
โSheโs lying to you,โ Lucian insisted. โSheโs here because of you.โ
โYou both need to shut your damn mouths now,โ Knox ordered. โLina is one of the fucking good ones.โ
โYou donโt trust her with your brother either,โ Lucian pointed out.
โBecause heโs gonna get his stupid heart broken, thatโs why,โ my brother said in exasperation. โNot because sheโs taking advantage or whatever bullshit you made up in that suspicious-ass mind of yours. She isnโt gonna settle down and be a copโs wife and chase after a bunch of kids. So if you go fallinโ head over heels for her and she kicks you in the gut on the way out the door, Iโm the one whoโs gonna have to deal with your bitching and moaning about it.โ
I was oddly touched, but still mostly pissed off.
I faced them both. My brother and my best friend thought I was too weak to survive this.
โGo near her again and I will make you regret it,โ I said, my knuckles going white on the handle of my mug.
โIโm sayinโ the same thing to you,โ Knox said to me. โNot your call to make,โ I reminded him.
โI donโt trust her,โ Lucian said stubbornly.
โYeah? And I didnโt trust that dental hygienist you dated for a month three years ago.โ
โYou were right not to. She stole my watch and my bathrobe,โ my friend admitted.
โLina isnโt after me for my watch and I donโt have a bathrobe.โ โNo. But sheโs after something. A liar can smell a lie.โ
โStop looking into her.โ
โIf you get your head on straight, Iโll stop keeping tabs,โ Lucian said.
When Lucian Rollins kept tabs, that meant he knew what was in your garbage before it went out to the curb. It meant he knew what you were going to have for dinner before you did. The man had a gift for information gathering, and I shouldnโt have been surprised that heโd wield it against me. Especially if he thought it was for my own good.
โI donโt need to be hearing this.โ
โYes, you do,โ he insisted. โIโm hearing more rumors that Duncan Hugo didnโt run off with his tail between his legs.โ
โSo what?โ I shot back.
โYouโre a loose end. A direct threat to him. You canโt hide in the blanks in your memory forever. I need you to be operating at one hundred percent. Because if he does get to you again, if he does manage to take you outโฆ that leaves me with only Knox as a friend.โ
โHilarious.โ
โFuck you,โ Knox muttered.
โYouโre too good to let this end you. You need to claw your way out of this darkness if necessary and beat him. And youโre not going to accomplish that by distracting yourself with a woman you canโt trust.โ
โThereโs a simple solution to this. Both of you stay the hell away from Lina,โ Knox said.
โFuck you both.โ
