Chapter no 18 – EGGS BENEDICT FOR ASSHOLES

Things We Hide from the Light (Knockemout Series, 2)

Nash

I was not in the mood for breakfast food or the cheerful pop music on the dinerโ€™s speakers. For the second day in a row, I hadnโ€™t woken up with that horrible crunching sound echoing in my head.

Instead, Iโ€™d woken up to Lina. And my asshole friend had ruined it. โ€œWhereโ€™s your marshal shadow?โ€ my asshole friend asked.

โ€œProbably still in bed. Whereย Iย should be. You interrupted something.โ€ โ€œYou should be thanking me.โ€

โ€œHave you lost your fucking mind?โ€ I said just as the server approached.

โ€œI can give you another minute,โ€ he said hesitantly.

โ€œCoffee. Black. Please,โ€ I added as I slid my menu to the edge of the table and glared at Lucian.

โ€œWeโ€™ll both have the smoked salmon eggs Benedict with yogurt and berries,โ€ my cockblocking friend said.

โ€œSure thing,โ€ the kid said before he hustled away.

Lucian had a way of intimidating and impressing people. Often both at the same time. Today, however, he was only pissing me off.

I scrubbed a hand over my face. โ€œWhat the hell is going on with you?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m here to ask you that very question,โ€ he said, frowning down at his

phone before tucking it into his suit jacket.

โ€œYouโ€™re like a vampire who stays up plotting how to cockblock his best friends.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve spent two nights in bed with her andโ€”โ€

โ€œHow do you know I spent two nights in bed with her?โ€ I interrupted. โ€œTwo nights in bed with who?โ€ My brother slid into the booth next to

me looking pissed off and like heโ€™d just rolled out of bed. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ I demanded.

He yawned and signaled for coffee. โ€œLucy called. Said it was important.

Two nights in bed with who?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not talking about it. And how in the fuck do you know what my sleeping arrangements are?โ€ I asked, turning back to Lucian.

โ€œInformation finds its way to me.โ€

โ€œI swear to God, if Mrs. Tweedy is listening at my door with a drinking glassโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat the hell is going on with you two?โ€ my brother cut in. The server returned with coffee for all.

โ€œCan I get you anything for breakfast?โ€ he asked Knox. โ€œMaybe after I find out who my brotherโ€™s taking to bed.โ€

โ€œJesus. Itโ€™s nobodyโ€™s business who Iโ€™m taking to bed. What I want to know is why in the hell Lucian showed up at Linaโ€™s door at six in the morning and dragged me out of bed for fucking breakfast.โ€

โ€œYou were at Linaโ€™s at six in the morning?โ€ Knox didnโ€™t sound happy about that.

โ€œFrankly, I wouldnโ€™t have had to be there if my lunch with your bedmate had gone better yesterday,โ€ Lucian said, sounding annoyed.

I was considering lunging across the table and grabbing him by the lapels of his fancy-ass suit when the server wisely decided to disappear.

โ€œWhy are we here? What are you doing having lunch with Lina? And what the fuck does that have to do with you suddenly having a hankering for eggs Benedict?โ€

โ€œWhy the fuck were you at Linaโ€™s at 6:00 a.m.? And the answer better not be that sheโ€™s the one youโ€™re banging,โ€ Knox snarled.

Lucian cocked an eyebrow at me and picked up his mug. โ€œShe told you we had lunch, but she didnโ€™t tell you why? Interesting.โ€

โ€œNone of this is interesting to me. Either get to the point or get out of my way,โ€ I said.

โ€œIf someone doesnโ€™t start answering questions, Iโ€™m gonna start throwinโ€™ punches,โ€ Knox warned.

โ€œThings arenโ€™t right with him,โ€ Lucian said, pointing to me. โ€œThey havenโ€™t been since the shooting.โ€

โ€œNo fucking shit, Sherlock. Some asshole put two holes in me. It takes a while to come back from that.โ€

โ€œYou say that as if youโ€™re trying.โ€

A white-hot anger clawed its way to life under my skin. Next to me, my brother tensed.

โ€œFuck you, Lucy,โ€ I said. โ€œI am trying. Iโ€™m doing my PT. Iโ€™m going to the gym. Iโ€™m going to work.โ€

He shook his head. โ€œPhysically, youโ€™re healing. But mentally? Youโ€™re not the same. You hide it. But the cracks are starting to show.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m gonna need something stronger than coffee if weโ€™re having this conversation,โ€ Knox muttered.

I picked up my coffee and considered whipping it at him. โ€œGet to the point, Lucy.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t need distractions. You need closure. You need to remember.

You need to find Hugo. And you need to get him off the street.โ€

โ€œGetting Hugo off the street doesnโ€™t change a damn thing about whatโ€™s already happened. Andย how the hellย is remembering what happened going to put me back together again?โ€

Did that blank spot in my memory hold the key? If I finally remembered how it felt to face death, would I be ready to live again? Wasnโ€™t that part of what I was struggling with? I could put criminals behind bars, but that didnโ€™t undo what theyโ€™d already done. I could stop them from doing it again, but I couldnโ€™t prevent the first.

I must have raised my voice because the couple at the table next to us turned to look at me.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe you got me out of bed with Naomi for this,โ€ Knox complained.

โ€œSame here.โ€

โ€œYour brother was in bed with Lina,โ€ Lucian tattled.

โ€œThe fuck he was. The fuck you were,โ€ Knox said, swinging my way. โ€œDonโ€™t you fucking start,โ€ I warned.

โ€œI told you to stay away from her.โ€ โ€œI told her the same,โ€ Lucian said.

โ€œWhat? Why?โ€ Knox and I snapped together. โ€œSame team, Knox,โ€ Lucian reminded him.

โ€œDid you threaten her?โ€ I asked, my voice low and dangerous. โ€œYouโ€™re damn right I did.โ€

โ€œWhat the fuck is wrong with you? Both of you,โ€ my brother demanded.

โ€œSheโ€™s taking advantage of you,โ€ Lucian insisted.

โ€œYouโ€™re really starting to piss me off, Lucy,โ€ I warned. โ€œGood. Thatโ€™s a start.โ€

โ€œYou are not to go near Lina again,โ€ I told him. โ€œYou canโ€™t fucking threaten people on my behalf. Especially not her.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t believe youโ€™re sleeping with Lina after I told you not to,โ€ Knox growled.

โ€œAnd you canโ€™t bury your head in the sand hoping things will get better. Your father spent the last few decades numbing himself to life. What youโ€™re doing isnโ€™t much different,โ€ Lucian said.

A charged silence fell over our table as we glared at each other.

โ€œIโ€™m depressed. Okay, you fucking assholes? My life has been one big black hole since I woke up in that hospital bed. Happy now?โ€ It was the first time Iโ€™d admitted it out loud. I didnโ€™t much care for it.

โ€œDo I look happy?โ€

To his credit, Lucian looked miserable.

โ€œTell me what any of this has to do with Lina,โ€ my brother said, his face in his hands.

โ€œI donโ€™t believe sheโ€™s being truthful. I have concerns she could take advantage of you when youโ€™reโ€ฆlike this. She shows up in town a day before Hugo made a move on Naomi and Waylay. She didnโ€™t tell you about her real job. She moves in next door. And she just so happens to have a history with the marshal assigned to you.โ€

โ€œShe also picked my ass up off the floor, got me upstairs, and helped me through a fucking panic attack two nights ago. I donโ€™t know what the fuck it is about her but the closer I am to her, the better I feel. The easier it is to get out of bed and force myself to go through the motions. So while Iย appreciateย your concern, Iโ€™ll point out that sheโ€™s been there for me in a way no one else has been. Not you. Not Knox. No one.โ€

Lina made me feel like a man, not like the broken shell of one. Lucianโ€™s jaw tightened beneath his neatly trimmed beard.

โ€œTwo smoked salmon eggs Benedicts.โ€ The server appeared with our breakfast.

โ€œThanks,โ€ I said flatly when it became clear Lucian wasnโ€™t going to. โ€œCan I get you anything else right now? More coffee? Napkins to mop

up any future bloodshed? No? Okay then.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s lying to you,โ€ Lucian insisted. โ€œSheโ€™s here because of you.โ€

โ€œYou both need to shut your damn mouths now,โ€ Knox ordered. โ€œLina is one of the fucking good ones.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t trust her with your brother either,โ€ Lucian pointed out.

โ€œBecause heโ€™s gonna get his stupid heart broken, thatโ€™s why,โ€ my brother said in exasperation. โ€œNot because sheโ€™s taking advantage or whatever bullshit you made up in that suspicious-ass mind of yours. She isnโ€™t gonna settle down and be a copโ€™s wife and chase after a bunch of kids. So if you go fallinโ€™ head over heels for her and she kicks you in the gut on the way out the door, Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s gonna have to deal with your bitching and moaning about it.โ€

I was oddly touched, but still mostly pissed off.

I faced them both. My brother and my best friend thought I was too weak to survive this.

โ€œGo near her again and I will make you regret it,โ€ I said, my knuckles going white on the handle of my mug.

โ€œIโ€™m sayinโ€™ the same thing to you,โ€ Knox said to me. โ€œNot your call to make,โ€ I reminded him.

โ€œI donโ€™t trust her,โ€ Lucian said stubbornly.

โ€œYeah? And I didnโ€™t trust that dental hygienist you dated for a month three years ago.โ€

โ€œYou were right not to. She stole my watch and my bathrobe,โ€ my friend admitted.

โ€œLina isnโ€™t after me for my watch and I donโ€™t have a bathrobe.โ€ โ€œNo. But sheโ€™s after something. A liar can smell a lie.โ€

โ€œStop looking into her.โ€

โ€œIf you get your head on straight, Iโ€™ll stop keeping tabs,โ€ Lucian said.

When Lucian Rollins kept tabs, that meant he knew what was in your garbage before it went out to the curb. It meant he knew what you were going to have for dinner before you did. The man had a gift for information gathering, and I shouldnโ€™t have been surprised that heโ€™d wield it against me. Especially if he thought it was for my own good.

โ€œI donโ€™t need to be hearing this.โ€

โ€œYes, you do,โ€ he insisted. โ€œIโ€™m hearing more rumors that Duncan Hugo didnโ€™t run off with his tail between his legs.โ€

โ€œSo what?โ€ I shot back.

โ€œYouโ€™re a loose end. A direct threat to him. You canโ€™t hide in the blanks in your memory forever. I need you to be operating at one hundred percent. Because if he does get to you again, if he does manage to take you outโ€ฆ that leaves me with only Knox as a friend.โ€

โ€œHilarious.โ€

โ€œFuck you,โ€ Knox muttered.

โ€œYouโ€™re too good to let this end you. You need to claw your way out of this darkness if necessary and beat him. And youโ€™re not going to accomplish that by distracting yourself with a woman you canโ€™t trust.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a simple solution to this. Both of you stay the hell away from Lina,โ€ Knox said.

โ€œFuck you both.โ€
