Chapter no 143 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒAT LEAST YOU MADE I T TO BIG LUNCH

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

JOEY

โ€œDELLIE, HE CALLED OUR SISTER A SLUT,โ€ย Tadhg defended

with a huff, climbing into the backseat of her Range Rover, after sheโ€™d been called to come collect us from the office. โ€œYeah, Joe threw the first slap, but he goaded it out of him by bringing up Aoife and my nephew. And listen, before you say it, Iโ€™m not apologizing for kicking him in the nuts when he was on the ground either. The prick had it coming.โ€

โ€œWell,โ€ she sighed heavily. โ€œAt least you made it to big lunch.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I muttered from the passenger seat. โ€œI fucked it.โ€

โ€œNo, you didnโ€™t,โ€ Tadhg argued, reaching a hand through the seats to pat

my shoulder. โ€œYou turned his nose sideways, Joe. It was a solid right hook.โ€ โ€œNot helping, kid.โ€ I dropped my head in my hands, knowing that I was

in deep shit for my outburst. โ€œHow long am I being suspended for?โ€

โ€œFor the next two weeks,โ€ Edel replied, pulling into traffic. โ€œSweet,โ€ Tadhg hooted. โ€œTalk about a result!โ€

โ€œNot you, Rocky,โ€ she corrected. โ€œYouโ€™re back on Monday.โ€

โ€œFuck my life,โ€ number four grumbled. โ€œIย knewย I should have thrown the first punch.โ€

โ€œHey,โ€ I snapped, twisting around to face him. โ€œStop acting like a little shit. I did the wrong thing back there.โ€

โ€œBut you โ€”โ€œ

โ€œI did the wrong thing, Tadhg,โ€ I reinforced, giving him a stern look of warning. โ€œI wasย wrong, okay? Donโ€™t copy me. Itโ€™sย notย a good thing. Do better, Tadhg.ย Beย better.โ€ย Than me.

โ€œCAN WE TALK?โ€ I asked, lingering in the kitchen doorway a little while later, watching as Edel Kavanagh mothered my youngest brother.

โ€œAlways, love,โ€ she replied. โ€œNanny gave me money.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ she mused, ruffling Seanโ€™s curls before turning her attention back to the pot of stew she was stirring.

โ€œYeah.โ€ I shrugged, still lingering. โ€œA lotย of money.โ€

She turned to look at me then. โ€œHow much are we talking?โ€

โ€œFifteen grand.โ€ I reached into the gear bag I had packed for Molloyโ€™s house and showed her the envelope full of cash. โ€œItโ€™s from my grandfather. He left it to me when he died.โ€

Her brows shot up. โ€œAnd you havenโ€™t touched it?โ€ I shook my head. โ€œNot a penny.โ€

โ€œHave you been tempted?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m tempted every second of the day,โ€ I admitted. โ€œBut Iโ€™m not going back there.โ€

She smiled. โ€œGood boy.โ€

โ€œI guess, what I wanted to talk to you about was the matter of settling up with you and John. Obviously, I need to keep some of the money for Aoife and AJ, but Tonyโ€™s after giving me back my job at the garage, so Iโ€™ll be able to set up a payment plan โ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare finish that sentence,โ€ she cut in, spinning around to face me. โ€œI mean it, Joey Lynch.โ€ Wiping her hands on her apron, she stalked towards me, not stopping until she had the envelope in her hands and was stuffing it back into my bag. โ€œI will never take so much as a cent from you. Do you hear me, love? Not a brown brass penny, so put any notions of that out of your head.โ€

โ€œEdel.โ€ Sighing heavily, I rubbed my jaw. โ€œIย haveย to pay you back.โ€

โ€œYou already are,โ€ she replied, reaching up to pat my cheek. โ€œBy staying clean and going to school.โ€œ

โ€œI got suspended on my first day at Tommen,โ€ I reminded her.

โ€œPsssh. So did I.โ€ She waved a hand around aimlessly. โ€œAnd I did it in epic fashion.โ€

โ€œYou went to Tommen?โ€

โ€œI was transplanted there,โ€ she replied with a smirk. โ€œSame as you.โ€ โ€œI didnโ€™t know that.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a lot you donโ€™t know, Joey love.โ€ Smirking, she patted my cheek once more before turning her attention back to her stew. โ€œA lot.โ€

Well, shit.

โ€œDo you, ah, think you could give me a spin into town?โ€ I gestured to my bag. โ€œI need to see Aoife.โ€

โ€œI can drop you into town in an hour or two, love, but if you need to go now, then just run upstairs and ask Johnny before he leaves for training. Iโ€™m sure he wouldnโ€™t mind dropping you off on his way.โ€

Navigating my way through Tommen was one thing, but navigating my way through the maze that was the Kavanagh Manor was something entirely different. Wandering through the maze of corridors, I finally found my feet on the right wing of the house. Knowing my surroundings, I walked to the end of the hallway, stopping just outside the door that housed my sister’s soft laughter.

When our mother was alive, I had been too high to hear her warnings about Shannon’s relationship with Kav. Now, as I stood on my own two feet, with a clear head and my wits about me, I got it. I finally saw what my mother had been so afraid of.

This wasn’t puppy love.

It wasn’t a fleeting romance, either.

No, whatever was happening between these two was raw, real, and mixed with an undeniable air of permanence.

Smiling to myself, I knocked once and pushed the door inwards. That was my first mistake.

My second mistake wasโ€ฆ nope, it was gone.

I could focus on nothing but the image of my naked sister, bouncing on top of her equally naked boyfriend.

“Trigger,” I roared, slapping a hand over my eyes two seconds too late. “Trigger, trigger, get-your-fucking-dick-out-of-my-baby-sister trigger!”

“Oh my god!” Shannon screamed, hands and legs flailing, as she scrambled off mister fucking rugbyโ€™s lap and tried to hide behind his back. “Joey! Get the hell out!”

“Yeah,” I roared, feeling faint, as I leaned against the door frame and resisted the overpowering urge to heave my guts up. “Get out of her, you big, overgrown bastard. You’ll break her!”

“Not him โ€“ Johnny, donโ€™t move!” my sister screamed back, as she peeked over his shoulder, and pointed a finger at me. “You, Joe! Get out.”

โ€œI canโ€™t!โ€

โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m frozen to the fucking spot here, Shannon! Iโ€™m having an out of body experience here, and itโ€™s fairly traumatizing,โ€ I choked out. โ€œJesus Christ, have I taught you nothing?โ€ I demanded, feeling faint. โ€œHave you learnedย nothingย from my mistakes?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m on the pill,โ€ my baby sister offered up.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m wearing a condom,โ€ the big bastard chimed in. โ€œOh Jesus,โ€ I whimpered, gagging at the mental image.

“You need to learn how to knock,” Shannon strangled out breathlessly. “Now go.”

“Are you seriously going to keep going?” When she didnโ€™t deny it, I shuddered in repulsion. โ€œI canโ€™t believe youโ€™re actually doingย that.โ€

“Joe, weโ€™ve been doing ‘that’ for months now.”

โ€œFor fuckโ€™s sake, Shannon, whyโ€™d you have to tell me that?โ€ I hissed, stomach churning in disgust, as I staggered blindly for the door. โ€œI only wanted a spin to Aoifeโ€™s place, not another reason to be in therapy.โ€

โ€œABOUT WHAT YOU SAW BACK THERE,โ€ Kav finally addressed the elephant in the room, much to my dismay. โ€œAbout me and Shan.โ€

โ€œListen, lad, all I need from you is a spin to my girlfriendโ€™s house,โ€ I replied, still feeling queasy, as he drove me into town. โ€œNot an explanation.โ€

โ€œI love her.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure you do.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he said, tone serious. โ€œIย loveย her, lad. Iโ€™mย inย love with her.โ€

โ€œGood for you,โ€ I muttered, unable to look at him anymore without seeing the image ofโ€ฆJesus, I couldnโ€™t even think it. โ€œI know you love her,โ€ I decided to add. โ€œItโ€™s the only reason Iโ€™m not losing it right now.โ€

He was quiet for a moment, clearly absorbing my words, before he spoke again.

“I’m going to take her with me, Joey,” he said quietly. โ€œWhen I leave Ballylaggin? Wherever I end up, Iโ€™m taking her with me.โ€

“Good,” I replied. “At least she’ll have a fighting chance.”

“She already has a fighting chance,” he replied gruffly. “Because of you, lad. Not me.”

My phone rang then, distracting me from our conversation, and I quickly snatched it out of my pocket and clicked accept. โ€œHello?โ€

โ€œHello? Joey love, itโ€™s me, Trish. I was just wondering what time you would be here?โ€

โ€œHey. Iโ€™m on the way over now.โ€

โ€œOh, thank god.โ€ She sighed heavily down the line. โ€œSheโ€™s having a bad day, pet.โ€

My heart sank. โ€œI wonโ€™t be long.โ€
