Chapter no 130 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€ŒCALL MY GIRL

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

JOEY

โ€œFUN FACT OF THE DAY:ย I officially have udders.โ€ โ€œUdders?โ€

โ€œYep. Thatโ€™s right. I kid you not. Apparently, I produce milk now. By the bra full.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re leaking?โ€ โ€œLike a faulty tap.โ€ โ€œShit.โ€

โ€œOh yeah, and fair warning, I havenโ€™t seen my vagina since June, so you know what that means, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œNo, Molloy, I really donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œIt means youโ€™ll be returning to The Amazon Rainforest of vaginas.โ€ โ€œJesus.โ€

โ€œYep. Oh, and I have brown nipples.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve always had brown nipples.โ€

โ€œNo,ย youโ€™veย always had brown nipples,โ€ she argued. โ€œIโ€™ve always had rosy-pink ones.โ€

โ€œWell, a change is as good as a rest.โ€

โ€œAlso, that spiel they give you about oiling your stomach to prevent stretch marks is complete bullshit. Iโ€™ve been oiling, Joe. Three times a day, and your spawn still managed to bend me out of shape like a Stretch- Armstrong doll with varicose veins.โ€ She sighed dramatically before adding, โ€œI fear I may never wear my yellow bikini again.โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t you buy that bikini when we were in second year?โ€ โ€œSo?โ€

โ€œSo, maybe it doesnโ€™t matter if you canโ€™t fit into a bikini that you wore when you were fourteen?โ€

โ€œUgh, I hate it when youโ€™re so logical,โ€ she grumbled. โ€œI think I liked you better when you were off your head and telling me whatever I wanted to hear.โ€

I laughed down the line. โ€œMolloy, you only ever hear what you want anyway, so thatโ€™s a moot point.โ€

โ€œA moot point?โ€ she teased down the line. โ€œGet you, mister fancy pants.

Practicing all the big words for Tommen, huh?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ I groaned, resting my head against the wall. โ€œIโ€™m not doing it, Aoif.โ€

โ€œOh yes you are,โ€ she argued back. โ€œCome next month, my baby daddy is going to be a thorough-bred private school boy.โ€ Bursting into a fit of snickering laughter, she added, โ€œBlazer and all.โ€

โ€œThere is no fucking way that I amย everย wearing a blazer to school,โ€ I growled, repressing a shiver. โ€œI would rather shit in my hands and clap.โ€

โ€œOh, smeared feces . How sexy.โ€ โ€œGive it a rest, will ya?โ€

โ€œHey now, youโ€™re the one threatening to shit in your hands, drama queen,โ€ she teased.

โ€œThey want to change me, Molloy. Make me into a whole different person. It’s not who I am. I’m me.โ€

โ€œThey donโ€™t want to change you, Joe. They want to support you.โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t get it.โ€

โ€œI know you donโ€™t, and that makes me love you even more.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re a dope.โ€ โ€œYou love me.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ย I do. I smiled to myself. โ€œSo, did you get your leaving cert results yet? They came out this morning, right?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ she sighed dramatically. โ€œBut I havenโ€™t been over to the school to collect them yet.โ€

โ€œWhy the hell not?โ€

โ€œBecause I didnโ€™t want to miss your call.โ€

โ€œMolloy.โ€ Guilt sucker punched me in the chest. โ€œYou need to go and get your results.โ€

โ€œI failed.โ€

My heart sank.

โ€œWhat do you mean you failed?โ€

โ€œI mean I failed the leaving cert in spectacular fashion.โ€ โ€œMolloy.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not all bad,โ€ she was quick to say. โ€œKev got six hundred points. So, heโ€™ll be heading off to his top choice university.โ€

Like I gave a shit what her brother got.

โ€œLetโ€™s see.โ€ I heard her sigh sadly as the sound of paper ruffling filled my ears. โ€œD in Business. E in Irish. E in Maths. E in History. Oh, I got a C in Biology. D in English. Oh, and another D in Home Ec.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, queen.โ€

โ€œYep.โ€ Another heavy sigh. โ€œWant some more crappy news?โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t get in.โ€ โ€œTo St. Johnโ€™s?โ€

โ€œThe rejection letter came yesterday.โ€ Fuck.

โ€œSo, yeah, stud, it turns out youโ€™re not the only one heading back to school.โ€

I frowned. โ€œYouโ€™re going back to school?โ€

โ€œAccording to Mam and Dad, I have to repeat sixth year, which I am absolutelyย notย doing.โ€ She released a frustrated growl. โ€œI mean, it was hard enough last year. How the hell am I supposed to focus this time around with a baby to look after?โ€

โ€œAoif.โ€ Jesus, I could hardly speak I was so laden down with guilt. โ€œIโ€™m so fucking sorry, baby.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not on you, Joe.โ€ Yeah.

It was.

โ€œTrish wants you to repeat, huh?โ€ I knew it would be Trish, because Tony wasnโ€™t the school promotor type. In his mind, if you could read, write, count money, and had a good head on your shoulders, then you would make your way just fine in life. Trish, on the other hand, was the one gunning for her kids to make something of themselves.

โ€œYep,โ€ she replied. โ€œMam thinks itโ€™ll be good for me to get it done. Sheโ€™s been in contact with Mr. Nyhan, and heโ€™s been really good about it โ€“ all things considered. He told Mam the school will work with me, you know, sending homework and stuff, and that I donโ€™t have to attend in person until after the Halloween break.โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€ I scrubbed my jaw, feeling overwhelmedย forย her.

โ€œMam offered to mind the baby for me if I go back to school, but Iโ€™m not doing it, Joe.โ€

Anxiety filled me.

All these plans and decisions were being made without me.

โ€œWhat about me?โ€ I heard myself interject. โ€œI can have the baby while you go to school. Iโ€™ll find evening work thatโ€™ll fit our schedule.โ€

โ€œAnd Tommen? Where does that fit in?โ€ โ€œIt doesnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to do this, Joe.โ€

โ€œNo, Molloy. Iโ€™m going to take care of you and the baby.โ€

โ€œYes, by finishing out school,โ€ she pushed. โ€œAt least that way our baby has one parent to be proud of.โ€

Fuck, that stung.

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing about me to be proud of,โ€ I told her. โ€œYouโ€™re the good one, Aoif. Youโ€™re the parent our kid will be proud of.โ€

โ€œListen to you with all the compliments.โ€

โ€œSeriously, you do the whole school gig by day, and Iโ€™ll have the baby, and then Iโ€™ll work at night while youโ€™re with him.โ€

โ€œYeah, because my dadโ€™s really going to go for that.โ€

I rolled my eyes. โ€œHe can fire me, but he canโ€™t keep me from my kid.โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s not it, Joe,โ€ she was quick to say. โ€œHe loves you. You know he

does. Heโ€™s justโ€ฆ protective of me after everything that happened.โ€

โ€œYou mean after I left you alone and pregnant.โ€ โ€œHe knows you had to go.โ€

โ€œHe might know it, but he doesnโ€™t accept it.โ€

โ€œWell, I do, and thatโ€™s all that matters,โ€ she replied. โ€œSo, donโ€™t let it get you down. You and Dad will patch things up when youโ€™re home. You guys always do.โ€

Yeah, somehow, I doubted that.

Iโ€™d overheard Tony ranting and raving the other night when she was on the phone to me.

He didnโ€™t want me going anywhere near his daughter, and I didnโ€™t blame him. Jesus, it was a miracle he hadnโ€™t confiscated her phone to stop me from calling. I sure as hell wouldnโ€™t blame him if he did. Iโ€™d put his daughter through hell.

โ€œHeโ€™ll give you back your job at the garage once he sees how well youโ€™re doing,โ€ Molloy said down the line. โ€œMaybe not right away, but he will. Dad never replaced you. He never hired anyone else, Joe.โ€

โ€œI really fucking hope youโ€™re right, Molloy,โ€ I said honestly. Because they could talk about college degrees to me until the cows came home, but the only career Iโ€™d ever been interested in pursuing was under the bonnet of a car.
