AOIFE
I WAS HALF-WAYย through my shift at work, sweltering in the early August heat, and feeling like I had hooves for feet, when my boss stopped me dead in my tracks.
โAoife,โ he said, taking the tray I was attempting to carry into the kitchen out of my hands. โHow are ya, love?โ
โFine,โ I replied, instantly suspicious. โHow are you, Garry?โ โTo be honest, Iโm a bit concerned about you, love.โ
โWhy?โ
โWellโฆโ Red-faced, he gestured to my stomach and shrugged. โIโm just thinking that it might be time you consider taking it easy, pet. You look exhausted. Absolutely dead on your feet.โ
Ha.
No fucking way was he getting rid of me that easily. If I left early, it could mess with my maternity leave.
He might not take me back afterwards. I had too much to lose.
I had a baby to raise, dammit.
โIโm not due for another eight weeks,โ I reminded him. โI donโt plan on starting my maternity leave for another six weeks, Garry. You know this. We agreed on it.โ
โI know what we agreed, but arenโt you tired, love?โ
Iโm beyond tired.ย โIโm happy to work.โ
โI donโt want you carrying heavy trays back and forth to the kitchen anymore.โ
โThen put me behind the bar,โ I argued. โOr doing the pot wash in the kitchen. Whatever. I donโt care. But I need to work, Gar. I need the money.โ
โAnd youโre a great little worker,โ he tried to fob me off by saying. โWeโre lucky to have you.โ
โThen let me get back to work,โ I said, snatching my tray back, and stepping around him. โBecause I have another six weeks of work left, and I plan on showing up for every shift.โ
โLOOK AT THE SIZE OF YOU,โ Paul whistled, when I came to take his order a little while later. He was sitting alone in a booth and that pissed me off no end, because he could have easily taken a spot at the bar and leave the space for larger groups. โJesus, Iโve seen women having triplets with smaller bumps.โ
โHello to you, too, Paul,โ I drawled, not taking one word of it to heart. Not when it was true. My bumpย wasย huge. Iโd heard just about every joke, snide comment, and surprised gasp in the book.
The baby was measuring so big that I had been tested four times for gestational diabetes. The results came back negative every single time.
Apparently, I was just growing a baby sumo-wrestler.
Even Mam had warned me off buying anything in the newborn size, advising that 0-3 months was a better choice for the little whopper.
Yeah, that wasnโt terrifying at all.
โWhat can I get you?โ I asked, flipping over to a blank page on my little notepad, and retrieving my pencil from behind my ear. โTodayโs specials are seafood chowder and roast lamb, with the chefโs homemade mint sauce.โ
โI actually wanted a word,โ he said, reaching up to scratch the back of his neck, as he eyed my belly nervously. โWith you.โ
โIโm sorry, but a conversation with me isnโt on the menu for today,โ I replied. โNeither is forgiveness.โ
โThen Iโll have the roast lamb,โ he said with an awkward shrug. โAnd a pint of Guinness.โ
โYouโve got it.โ Snapping my notepad shut, I turned on my heels and headed back to the kitchen with his order before moving for the bar to pull him a pint of the black stuff.
When I returned a few minutes later with his order and set it down in front of him, my ex did the unthinkable and curled his hand around my wrist. โTwo minutes,โ he said, tone full of urgency. โJust two minutes of your time. Thatโs all Iโm asking for.โ
โWhy should I give you one second of my time?โ I demanded, yanking my hand away. โYouโre damn lucky I need this job, because in any other circumstances, youโd be wearing that pint.โ
โI know,โ he agreed, holding his hands up. โAnd I would one hundred percent deserve it. But Iโm leaving for college in a couple of weeks, and I
couldnโt go without at least trying to make amends.โ I arched a brow. โYou want to make amends?โ
โI want to apologize,โ he offered. โFor what I did to you. Telling the
whole class you were pregnant? It was fucking terrible of me.โ โYeah,โ I deadpanned. โIt was.โ
โIโve spent a lot of time thinking about my behavior,โ he added. โAbout the way I treated you when we were together.โ
โI donโt see why any of this needs to be rehashed, Paul,โ I quickly said. โSchoolโs finished. Weโre finished. Youโre going off to college to start a brand-new life. Iโm about to have a baby with your arch-nemesis. Letโs just leave it at that, yeah?โ
โThatโs precisely why we need to talk,โ he said. โPlease, Aoif, just give me five minutes of your time.โ
โFirst you said two minutes,โ I grumbled, plopping down on the seat opposite his. โNow youโre saying five. Iโll give you three and a half.โ
โThank you.โ Releasing a sigh of relief, he smiled at me. โSeriously, thank you.โ
Remaining stony-faced, I rested my hands on my bump and waited for him to get to the point.
โI was a shitty boyfriend to you,โ he started off by saying. โI didnโt pay you enough attention. I never asked you what you wanted to do. I put my needs, my feelings, and my wants before yours. I fucked around behind your back constantly, and then got blew a head gasket when you gave me a dose of my own medicine.โ
โPaul, itโs in the past.โ
โYeah, it is,โ he agreed with a nod. โBut that doesnโt change the fact that I feel horrible about how it ended. Especially about revealing your pregnancy. And afterwards,โ he continued. โWhen it all came out about what Lynchy was going through at home.โ He shook his head. โAnd then the fire?โ He exhaled heavily. โI never felt shittier.โ
โYeah.โ
โI tried to talk to you at school after the funeral,โ he reminded me. โTo apologize. But you were completely closed off.โ
โI had a lot on my mind.โ
โI know,โ he agreed. โI justโฆ I feel so bad about everything, Aoif.โ โListen, itโs not like I was an angel,โ I offered. โYou were paranoid about
my friendship with Joey, and you had every right to be. It might not have
been physical, but you were dead on the money when you said that I was having an emotional affair with him.โ
โBut a lot of that had to do with the fact that he gave you everything I didnโt. I gave you presents. He gave you his presence,โ he said calmly. โI didnโt understand it at the time, why you were so insistent about being his friend. I thought having a girlfriend was all about material shit, but then I would see you hanging out with him, and he hadย nothingย to offer you, and still managed to give youย everythingย you wanted.โ
I shrugged helplessly. โWhereโs this change of heart coming from?โ
โBecause I donโt want to go off to college and start a new life without making peace with my old one,โ he explained. โAnd whether you want to hear it or not, you were a huge part of my old life for a very long time.โ
โOkay.โ Slightly confused, I leaned back and said, โQuick question.โ
โShoot.โ
โBella Wilkinson.โ I shook my head. โLad, what were youย thinking?โ โFull disclosure?โ
โGo for it.โ
โI was with her more than once.โ His cheeks reddened. โWhen we were a couple.โ
โWell, shit.โ I grumbled, patting my belly. โNow, Iโm really glad I kicked her ass.โ
โI figured you were screwing Lynchy behind my back, and that was why you refused to sleep with me, so I went hell for leather with pretty much any girl who looked sideways at me.โ
โI wasnโt screwing Joey,โ I told him. โNothing physical happened with Joe until that kiss in fifth year.โ I narrowed my eyes. โWhen you and Billy doubled teamed him before getting him arrested.โ
He winced. โYeah, I know that now.โ
โSo, speaking about batshit girls.โ The baby jabbed me in the ribs, and I shifted around in discomfort. โHowโs Danielle?โ
โDanielle?โ He laughed humorlessly. โDanielle was a distraction from you. We parted ways shortly after the leaving cert exams in June. Last I heard she was seeing Bellaโs ex from Tommen.โ
โYeah, well.โ I shrugged noncommittally. โI hate to say it, but you probably dodged a bullet with that one.โ Snorting, I added, โWhich is rich coming from your knocked-up ex.โ
He laughed in response before saying. โListen, I wanted to do something for you before I left. Help you in some way.โ
โYou donโt need to do anything for me, Paul.โ
โI know youโre on your own right now, while Lynchy is at rehab โโ โJoeโs coming home,โ I was quick to declare, hands moving protectively
to my stomach. โHeโs getting better and then heโs coming back for his family.โ
My ex shifted in discomfort.
โIโm sorry if thatโs still hard for you to hear,โ I added. โThat I love him?
But itโs the truth, and Iโm never going to give up on him.โ
โYeah,โ he replied with a heavy sigh. โI know youโre not, which is why I did it.โ
โWhat?โ Sitting upright, I studied him warily. โWhat did you do, Paul?โ โIโm guessing you didnโt read todayโs paper.โ
โNo.โ I rested my elbows on the table and leaned forward. โWhy?โ
โThere was a huge drug bust in Ballylaggin last night,โ he blew my mind by saying. โAccording to my father, theyโve had eyes on the Holland brothers for a long time now.โ
My eyes widened. โAre you serious?โ
Paul nodded. โHeโs being remanded in Portlaoise until sentencing.โ โShane is?โ
โAnd more with him,โ he confirmed. โAccording to my father, Shaneโs
already up for sexual assault, GBH, and several other unanswered charges. Dad reckons the judge will throw the book at him. Heโll be lucky if he doesnโt celebrate his thirtieth in prison.โ
โThatโs six years.โ I felt my body sag in a rush of instant relief. โYouโre saying heโs going away for six years?โ
โLonger if the DPP have their way.โ
โJesus Christ.โ I blew out a ragged breath and clutched my chest. โHow did this happen?โ
Paul shrugged. โSomeone tipped the drug squad off about a shipment of coke, with a street value of six hundred grand.โ
โWhat?โ My mouth fell open as awareness dawned on me. As I took in everything heย wasnโtย saying. โHow would someone know to tip them off?โ
โMaybe someone has friends in the right places,โ he offered, reaching across the table to cover my hand with his. โMaybe before they moved on, someone wanted to make sure his first love had a fighting chance with her first love.โ
