AOIFE

โ€œITโ€™S NOT RIGHT, TONY,โ€ย Mam said, setting a fresh mug of hot chocolate down in front of me on Friday evening. โ€œItโ€™s been four days. The girl has a right to see him.โ€

โ€œListen, Trish, Iโ€™m not arguing with you here. I donโ€™t think itโ€™s right either,โ€ Dad replied, sinking down at the kitchen table beside me. โ€œBut heโ€™s their brother. Heโ€™s the eldest. Their parents are dead. We have to respect his wishes. Darrenโ€™s doing the best he can under the circumstances to keep the family together.โ€

Four long days had passed since the fire that had taken the lives of Teddy and Marie Lynch.

Four days in which I had zero contact with Joey.

Four days since my world had fallen apart when I read the words on what could only be described as my boyfriendโ€™s suicide note.

My mind was still reeling.

My heart was in tattered shreds.

All of this I could have handled, if they would just let meย seeย him. But no, apparently, I wasnโ€™t what Joey needed right now.

According to Darren, I needed to keep my distance and give his brother time to grieve.

Like hell.

Joe wasnโ€™t just grieving.

If they had him holed up in a room somewhere, then he was going through withdrawals.

He wasย sufferingย and the fact that I couldnโ€™t get to him made me physically sick.

โ€œDarren is not the patriarch of the Lynch family,โ€ I spat, feeling my stomach twist up in knots. โ€œHeโ€™s a piss poor substitute for the only parent those children ever had.โ€

โ€œTheir motherโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not talking about their mother, Dad,โ€ I snapped, pushing the mug away from me. โ€œIโ€™m talking about Joe.โ€

โ€œWell, when Darren phoned, he asked us to keep Aoife away from the funeral on Monday,โ€ Mam said. โ€œApparently, Joey is going straight to a rehab facility afterwards, and he doesnโ€™t feel that seeing Aoife will be good for him. In case he changes his mind.โ€

โ€œWhat the fuck am I?โ€ I demanded, pushing my chair back and standing up. โ€œThe devil incarnate?โ€

Mam sighed heavily. โ€œAoifeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo, Mam, itโ€™s bullshit,โ€ I cried out, hating myself for sounding so weak in that moment. โ€œItโ€™s not fair. Iโ€™ve been here the whole time. I didnโ€™t run away. I didnโ€™t check out on Joey. Six years, Mam. For six years, Iโ€™ve stayed, and Iโ€™ve helped him. Iโ€™ve pulled him out of drug dens. Iโ€™ve taken needles out

of his arm. Iโ€™ve begged and borrowed to pay his dealers and keep him safe, and now, because Iโ€™m pregnant Darrenโ€™s making it out like Iโ€™ve caused Joeyโ€™s entire downfall.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ,โ€ my father choked out, dropping his head in his hands. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell us it had gotten that bad?โ€

โ€œHow could I?โ€ I cried. โ€œLook at how youโ€™re reacting now? You would have fired him from the garage and sent him away, and he doesnโ€™t have anyone else!โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re only eighteen,โ€ he bit back, tears filling his eyes. โ€œI donโ€™t want this life for you.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s only eighteen,โ€ I shot back, trembling. โ€œAnd heย isย my life, Dad. Heโ€™s my life and Iโ€™mย his. Weโ€™re a family,โ€œ my voice broke, and I sucked in a shuddering breath before squeezing out, โ€œHeโ€™s the father of my baby, and Darrenโ€™s taking himย awayย from me.โ€

โ€œAoife, pet, I know youโ€”โ€ The sound of the doorbell ringing pierced through the kitchen, causing my father to pause and frown at the closed kitchen door. โ€œAre you expecting anyone, Trish?โ€

โ€œNo, love,โ€ Mam replied, patting Dadโ€™s hand. โ€œI expect itโ€™ll be young Casey. She usually comes over at work.โ€

โ€œAoife?โ€ Kev called from the hallway a few moments later. โ€œI know you donโ€™t want me to speak to you, but thereโ€™s a woman at the door for ya.โ€

โ€œIf itโ€™s another fucking reporter looking for a statement, Iโ€™ll lose my mind,โ€ Dad snapped, rising to his feet and stalking out of the kitchen.

All week, we had been bombarded with phone calls from local radio stations and reporters coming to the house, looking for a scoop.

We were a small country, which meant that fire was big news in Cork, it had even made the national news, and the media was disgustingly intrusive about it. Casey even heard a rumor that the national news broadcasters planned to attend the funeral. It was beyond insensitive to six children who had just lost both of their parents โ€“ shitty as they were.

Dad returned a few minutes later with a familiar blonde woman in tow. โ€œTrish,โ€ he said, gesturing for the glamorous blonde to join us at the table. โ€œThis is Edel Kavanagh.โ€

โ€œHello, Trish,โ€ Edel said, offering my mother a soft smile before turning her attention to me. Warm eyes full of sympathy greeted me. โ€œAoife love, how are you?โ€

My mouth fell open and I tried to answer, but I couldnโ€™t get the words out. Not when my entire attention was riveted to the small child whose hand she was holding.

โ€œOh my god,โ€ I cried, practically falling off my chair in my bid to get to him. โ€œSeany!โ€

โ€œE-fa,โ€ he mumbled around the fingers he was sucking, before releasing himself from Edel and toddling towards me. His little hand covered in its usual slobber. โ€œE-fa.โ€

โ€œOh, Seany-boo.โ€ Scooping him up in my arms, I broke down there and then, as a wave of relief washed through me at the sight of his little curly head. โ€œYou have no idea how good it is to see you, baby boy.โ€

โ€œO-ee sad,โ€ he told me, touching my cheek with his hand. โ€œO-ee miss E-

fa.โ€

The fact that he was trying to speak and doing such a good job at articulating himself only made me cry harder. โ€œYeah, buddy,โ€ I sniffled, burying my face in his neck and soaking in his familiar smell. โ€œAoife misses Joey, too.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s actually what Iโ€™m here to talk to you about,โ€ Edel chimed in, taking the seat my mother was offering her. โ€œThank you.โ€

โ€œCoffee?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d love a cup, thanks, Trish.โ€

โ€œHow are the others?โ€ I asked, unable to keep the emotion out of my voice. โ€œAnd Joeโ€ฆโ€ Blowing out a shaky breath, I climbed to my feet, taking Seany with me, and returned to my seat at the kitchen. โ€œIs heโ€ฆdoing okay?โ€

โ€œThanks, Trish,โ€ Edel said, accepting the mug of steaming coffee my mother handed her, before turning her attention back to me. โ€œDarren, Shannon, Ollie, and Tadhg are doing remarkably well under the circumstances.โ€ She smiled indulgently at the little guy on my lap. โ€œAnd Seany here is the sweetest little soul.โ€

โ€œAnd Joe?โ€

She shook her head sadly. โ€œNot as well as the others.โ€ My heart plummeted.

โ€œHeโ€™s in bad shape,โ€ she added, and I tightened my hold on the small boy on my lap, feeling like I had a connection to my boyfriend for the first time in days. โ€œHe hasnโ€™t spoken a word since the night of the fire.โ€

โ€œJesus,โ€ my father muttered, scrubbing his face with his oil-stained hand. โ€œPoor lad.โ€

โ€œHe hasnโ€™t eaten a single bite either,โ€ she offered, concern evident in both her voice and her features. โ€œTo be honest with you, Iโ€™m not sure heโ€™s even slept. When heโ€™s not vomiting, heโ€™s staring lifelessly at the wall.โ€

โ€œIย needย to see him,โ€ I told her slowly, emphatically, fucking desperately, willing this woman to do the right thing for my boyfriend. โ€œYou donโ€™t get it. Darren thinks he knows everything, but he doesnโ€™t have a clue. He doesnโ€™t know a damn thing about his brother, but I do. Iย knowย Joey. I canย helpย him. I can getย throughย to him, if you just give me a chance.โ€

โ€œI agree,โ€ she surprised me by saying. โ€œThatโ€™s why Iโ€™m here, love.โ€ My brows shot up in surprise. โ€œYou agree?โ€

Edel nodded. โ€œI wanted to have you over that night. I thought it would be

good for Joey to have you with him, but Darren had just lost his mother, too, and I didnโ€™t have the heart to fight with him. He genuinely believed that he was doing the right thing for his brother. He was so adamant that he knew what was best.โ€ She took a sip of coffee before setting the mug back down and saying, โ€œBut I have a feeling that the best thing for Joey is sitting in this kitchen.โ€

Her words.

God, her words meant so much to me in this moment. They wrapped around my heart like a warm hug.

โ€œYouโ€™ll take me to him?โ€

She offered me a sad smile and nodded. โ€œYou should have never been kept apart in the first place, love. It was an error of judgment on my part, and it will never happen again.โ€

I was on my feet before she finished her sentence. โ€œIโ€™m ready now.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Dad blurted out. โ€œI donโ€™t want her to go.โ€

โ€œTony,โ€ Mam sighed. โ€œPlease justโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I know the ladโ€™s in a bad way,โ€ Dad argued, sounding genuinely torn. โ€œAnd I would give half my heart to make him better, I swear I would, but not at the expense of my daughterโ€™s welfare.โ€

โ€œTony.โ€

โ€œAoifeโ€™s over five months pregnant. She needs to be here where sheโ€™s safe and not stressed out.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going, Dad.โ€

โ€œAoife, no, please. Would you just think of yourself for a minute?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going, Dad,โ€ I repeated, setting Sean down on his feet. โ€œAnd thereโ€™s nothing you, Darren, or anyone else can say to stop me.โ€
