Chapter no 40

Crave by Tracy Wolff

โ€ŒThereโ€™s Never a Hallucinogen Around When You Need Oneโ€Œ

Mekhi and I donโ€™t have a lot to say after that charming revelationโ€”except for him insisting on escorting me back to my room. I mean, there really isnโ€™t much to say, considering I canโ€™t decide if I should trust him or not. I donโ€™t know this guy. I mean, yeah, Jaxon trusts him, but Jaxon is currently MIA, so thatโ€™s not exactly a ringing endorsement.

The fact that Jaxonโ€™s been blowing up my phone with text messages for the last fifteen minutes doesnโ€™t matter much to me, either. I texted him earlier, and the only response I got was him sending Mekhi. So now he can ask Mekhi what he wants to know about me, because I amย notย answering.

Childish? Maybe. Prudent? Absolutely. Because in the mood Iโ€™m in, Iโ€™m afraid Iโ€™m going to say something Iโ€™ll regret. Better to calm down and talk to him in person when he gets back. And also, if he tries to lie to me right now, Iโ€™ll burn whatever is growing between us straight to the freaking ground.

Mekhi tries to start conversations several times on the way back to my room, but Iโ€™m too shell-shocked to participate much. Itโ€™s not that Iโ€™m ignoring him; itโ€™s just that my head is spinning. This has to be a nightmare. Itโ€™s the only reasonable explanation.

Eventually, Mekhi gives up on the small talk. It should be a relief, but that just leaves silence to stretch between us.

Still, it might just be the most awkward silence of my life, so I expect him to cut and run the second he delivers me to my door. Instead, he waits until I get the door unlocked.

โ€œIโ€™m not inviting you in,โ€ I tell him without so much as bothering to turn my head to look at him.

โ€œI donโ€™t expect you to.โ€ But the moment I get the door open, he slaps his palm flat against it to keep me from closing it. He doesnโ€™t step inside, though, just stands as close to the threshold as he can get without actually crossing over it. Which seems strange, considering the beads are probably shocking the hell out of himโ€”at least until I remember one of the first rules of vampire lore.

That they canโ€™t come inside unless theyโ€™re invited in.

Which only makes his behavior more upsetting and me more freaked outโ€”even before it becomes obvious that heโ€™s going to prevent me from closing my door until he decides itโ€™s okay.

โ€œHey! What are you doing?โ€ I grab his arm and start trying to tug him back through the door.

He just shrugs me off. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™m not getting any closer.โ€ Then he grins at my cousin. โ€œHey, Macy.โ€

โ€œHi, Mekhi.โ€ Sheโ€™s still bleary-eyed and in her pajamas, which probably accounts for why she doesnโ€™t notice the power struggle going on between us. The cup of coffee in her hand attests to the fact that we didnโ€™t wake her up, but Iโ€™m still glad she wasnโ€™t in her underwear or something. โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€

โ€œNothing. He was just leaving.โ€ I shoot him a warning look.

He doesnโ€™t even pretend to look shamefaced when he says, โ€œJaxon doesnโ€™t want her going to class today.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ She doesnโ€™t even pause.

โ€œOkay?โ€ I demand. โ€œJaxon doesnโ€™t get to tell meโ€”โ€

โ€œMy dad already told her teachers she wouldnโ€™t be there after what happened yesterday. Great minds and all that.โ€ She scowls at me. โ€œYouโ€™re supposed to be in bed.โ€

โ€œYou going to stay with her?โ€ Mekhi asks before I can defend myself.

โ€œYeah, absolutely. Why? Whatโ€™s going on?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know yet. But Iโ€™m pretty sure thatโ€™s what Jaxon aims to find out.โ€

Macyโ€™s face tightens. โ€œIs something wrong?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know yet.โ€ Mekhi nods toward me. โ€œIโ€™ll let her tell you about it.โ€

โ€œYou know Iโ€™m standing right here in front of you, yeah?

Which means you can talkย toย me instead ofย overย me.โ€

Mekhiโ€™s brows hit his forehead. โ€œOh, really? Because Iโ€™m pretty sure I already tried that.โ€

โ€œYou know what? Bite me.โ€ I make an oops face. โ€œOh right, I forgot. Someone already did.โ€

Macy whips her head around like itโ€™s on springs. โ€œWhat did you say?โ€

โ€œShe knows, Mace.โ€

If possible, my cousin turns even paler. โ€œWhat exactly does she know, Mekhi?โ€

โ€œYou can go now,โ€ I tell him, grabbing on to the edge of the door and using it to back him off the threshold.

โ€œLook, Grace, Iโ€™m really sorry,โ€ he says right before I get the door closed.

I pause. โ€œDid you bite me?โ€ โ€œWhat? No! Of course not.โ€

โ€œThen youโ€™ve got nothing to apologize for.โ€ I sigh as some of the rage drains away. โ€œIโ€™m not mad at you personally, Mekhi. Iโ€™m just madโ€ฆand scared.โ€

โ€œI get that.โ€ He looks hesitant. โ€œDoes this mean youโ€™re not mad at Jaxon, either?โ€

โ€œOh, no. Iโ€™ve gotย allย the anger stored up for Jaxon, so donโ€™t you dare go telling him otherwise.โ€

โ€œBelieve me, I wonโ€™t.โ€ Mekhi grins. โ€œThe last thing Iโ€™m interested in doing is getting in the middle ofย thatย argument. Besides, it might be time someone takes my boy down a peg or two.โ€

โ€œMore like twelve,โ€ I answer with a snort. โ€œNow go away. I have stuff to do.โ€

With that, I close the door right in his face. And now that itโ€™s just Macy and me, everything suddenly gets a whole shit ton more real.

I take a second to gather my wits, to try to formulate what I want to say. But Macy jumps in before I can do much more than have an OMG moment.

โ€œGrace, itโ€™s notโ€”โ€

I turn to face her. โ€œIโ€™m going to ask you one question, Macy. Just one. And I want you to be totally honest with me. Because if youโ€™re notโ€ฆif youโ€™re not, Iโ€™m going to pack up all my shit and go back to California. Iโ€™ll stay with Heather; Iโ€™ll file for emancipation; Iโ€™ll do whatever I have to do. But I swear, you will never see or hear from me again. Got it?โ€

If itโ€™s possible, she grows even paler. Plus, if her eyes got any bigger, theyโ€™d take over her entire face. But that

doesnโ€™t stop her from nodding and saying quietly, โ€œOkay.โ€ โ€œAre you a vampire?โ€ I canโ€™t even believe Iโ€™m asking the

question.

โ€œWhat?โ€ She shakes her head vehemently. โ€œNo.โ€

The answer has me sagging with reliefโ€ฆat least until I realize one question isnโ€™t going to cut it. I haveย dozens.

โ€œIs your father a vampire?โ€ โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œWasย myย father a vampire?โ€

โ€œAbsolutely not.โ€ She reaches a hand out to me. โ€œOh, Grace, is that what youโ€™re afraid of?โ€

I blow out a long breath as the biggest, tightest knot in my stomach unwinds. โ€œAt this moment, I donโ€™t know what Iโ€™m afraid of, Macy. But since youโ€™re not acting like Iโ€™m losing my mind for asking these questionsโ€”and I have a perfect bite mark on my neck at this very momentโ€”I assume that means vampires are real.โ€

โ€œThey are, yes.โ€

โ€œAnd they go to this school.โ€ She nods. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œAnd Jaxon is a vampire.โ€ I hold my breath as I wait for her answer.

โ€œI really think you should talk to him about that, Grace. I meanโ€”โ€

โ€œMacy.โ€ I drop the anger, let her see the fear and frustration that are riding me hard. โ€œPlease.โ€

She just looks at me, her face miserable.

โ€œI thought we were friends, not just family.โ€ โ€œWe are. Of course we are.โ€

โ€œThen tell me the truth. Is. Jaxon. Vega. A. Vampire?โ€

Macy sighs. โ€œYes.โ€

I was expecting itโ€”I wasโ€”and still it explodes over me like a grenade. My knees go out from under me, and I hit the floor hard.

โ€œGrace!โ€ Macyโ€™s next to me in the space between one second and the next. โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œI have no idea.โ€ I close my eyes, lean my head back against the door, which is conveniently close to where I dropped. โ€œThatโ€™s why he can be outside without a jacket.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œSo that means Liaโ€ฆโ€ โ€œYes.โ€

I nod. โ€œFlint?โ€

โ€œNo, no. Flintโ€™s definitely not a vamp.โ€

I close my eyes as relief sweeps through me, at least until she continues. โ€œHeโ€™s aโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I open one eye. โ€œHeโ€™s a what?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m not sure youโ€™re ready.โ€

โ€œWill I ever be ready? Finish the sentence, please. Heโ€™s aโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDragon.โ€

Now I open both eyes. โ€œSay that again?โ€

She sighs. โ€œHeโ€™s a dragon, Grace. Flint is a dragon.โ€

โ€œOf course he is. You mean heโ€™s gotโ€”โ€ I hold my arms up and kind of flap them up and down.

โ€œYes, heโ€™s got wings.โ€

โ€œAndโ€ฆfire?โ€ I answer my own question. โ€œOf course he does. With a name like Flint, how could he not?โ€

My brain is imploding. I can feel it actually turning to mush and folding in on itself under the weight of all this new

information. I mean, who needs LSD when you go to Monster High?

Even worse, something tells me we arenโ€™t done yet. Which is probably what leads me to snark, โ€œAnd that makes you what? A fairy?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a fairy.โ€ She sounds insulted.

โ€œNot a fairy, not a vampire, not aโ€ฆdragon?โ€ Macy sighs. โ€œIโ€™m a witch, Grace.โ€

I run her words back through my head another time or five, but still. They make the least amount of sense of anything Iโ€™ve heard this afternoon. โ€œIโ€™m sorry?โ€

โ€œYou heard me.โ€ Now sheโ€™s smirking at me. โ€œAnd you want to know something else?โ€

โ€œAt this point, no. I donโ€™t. Not even a little bit. Iโ€™m done. My brain isโ€”โ€

โ€œYou should have been one, too.โ€
