โThereโs Never a Hallucinogen Around When You Need Oneโ
Mekhi and I donโt have a lot to say after that charming revelationโexcept for him insisting on escorting me back to my room. I mean, there really isnโt much to say, considering I canโt decide if I should trust him or not. I donโt know this guy. I mean, yeah, Jaxon trusts him, but Jaxon is currently MIA, so thatโs not exactly a ringing endorsement.
The fact that Jaxonโs been blowing up my phone with text messages for the last fifteen minutes doesnโt matter much to me, either. I texted him earlier, and the only response I got was him sending Mekhi. So now he can ask Mekhi what he wants to know about me, because I amย notย answering.
Childish? Maybe. Prudent? Absolutely. Because in the mood Iโm in, Iโm afraid Iโm going to say something Iโll regret. Better to calm down and talk to him in person when he gets back. And also, if he tries to lie to me right now, Iโll burn whatever is growing between us straight to the freaking ground.
Mekhi tries to start conversations several times on the way back to my room, but Iโm too shell-shocked to participate much. Itโs not that Iโm ignoring him; itโs just that my head is spinning. This has to be a nightmare. Itโs the only reasonable explanation.
Eventually, Mekhi gives up on the small talk. It should be a relief, but that just leaves silence to stretch between us.
Still, it might just be the most awkward silence of my life, so I expect him to cut and run the second he delivers me to my door. Instead, he waits until I get the door unlocked.
โIโm not inviting you in,โ I tell him without so much as bothering to turn my head to look at him.
โI donโt expect you to.โ But the moment I get the door open, he slaps his palm flat against it to keep me from closing it. He doesnโt step inside, though, just stands as close to the threshold as he can get without actually crossing over it. Which seems strange, considering the beads are probably shocking the hell out of himโat least until I remember one of the first rules of vampire lore.
That they canโt come inside unless theyโre invited in.
Which only makes his behavior more upsetting and me more freaked outโeven before it becomes obvious that heโs going to prevent me from closing my door until he decides itโs okay.
โHey! What are you doing?โ I grab his arm and start trying to tug him back through the door.
He just shrugs me off. โDonโt worry. Iโm not getting any closer.โ Then he grins at my cousin. โHey, Macy.โ
โHi, Mekhi.โ Sheโs still bleary-eyed and in her pajamas, which probably accounts for why she doesnโt notice the power struggle going on between us. The cup of coffee in her hand attests to the fact that we didnโt wake her up, but Iโm still glad she wasnโt in her underwear or something. โWhatโs up?โ
โNothing. He was just leaving.โ I shoot him a warning look.
He doesnโt even pretend to look shamefaced when he says, โJaxon doesnโt want her going to class today.โ
โOkay.โ She doesnโt even pause.
โOkay?โ I demand. โJaxon doesnโt get to tell meโโ
โMy dad already told her teachers she wouldnโt be there after what happened yesterday. Great minds and all that.โ She scowls at me. โYouโre supposed to be in bed.โ
โYou going to stay with her?โ Mekhi asks before I can defend myself.
โYeah, absolutely. Why? Whatโs going on?โ
โI donโt know yet. But Iโm pretty sure thatโs what Jaxon aims to find out.โ
Macyโs face tightens. โIs something wrong?โ
โI donโt know yet.โ Mekhi nods toward me. โIโll let her tell you about it.โ
โYou know Iโm standing right here in front of you, yeah?
Which means you can talkย toย me instead ofย overย me.โ
Mekhiโs brows hit his forehead. โOh, really? Because Iโm pretty sure I already tried that.โ
โYou know what? Bite me.โ I make an oops face. โOh right, I forgot. Someone already did.โ
Macy whips her head around like itโs on springs. โWhat did you say?โ
โShe knows, Mace.โ
If possible, my cousin turns even paler. โWhat exactly does she know, Mekhi?โ
โYou can go now,โ I tell him, grabbing on to the edge of the door and using it to back him off the threshold.
โLook, Grace, Iโm really sorry,โ he says right before I get the door closed.
I pause. โDid you bite me?โ โWhat? No! Of course not.โ
โThen youโve got nothing to apologize for.โ I sigh as some of the rage drains away. โIโm not mad at you personally, Mekhi. Iโm just madโฆand scared.โ
โI get that.โ He looks hesitant. โDoes this mean youโre not mad at Jaxon, either?โ
โOh, no. Iโve gotย allย the anger stored up for Jaxon, so donโt you dare go telling him otherwise.โ
โBelieve me, I wonโt.โ Mekhi grins. โThe last thing Iโm interested in doing is getting in the middle ofย thatย argument. Besides, it might be time someone takes my boy down a peg or two.โ
โMore like twelve,โ I answer with a snort. โNow go away. I have stuff to do.โ
With that, I close the door right in his face. And now that itโs just Macy and me, everything suddenly gets a whole shit ton more real.
I take a second to gather my wits, to try to formulate what I want to say. But Macy jumps in before I can do much more than have an OMG moment.
โGrace, itโs notโโ
I turn to face her. โIโm going to ask you one question, Macy. Just one. And I want you to be totally honest with me. Because if youโre notโฆif youโre not, Iโm going to pack up all my shit and go back to California. Iโll stay with Heather; Iโll file for emancipation; Iโll do whatever I have to do. But I swear, you will never see or hear from me again. Got it?โ
If itโs possible, she grows even paler. Plus, if her eyes got any bigger, theyโd take over her entire face. But that
doesnโt stop her from nodding and saying quietly, โOkay.โ โAre you a vampire?โ I canโt even believe Iโm asking the
question.
โWhat?โ She shakes her head vehemently. โNo.โ
The answer has me sagging with reliefโฆat least until I realize one question isnโt going to cut it. I haveย dozens.
โIs your father a vampire?โ โNo.โ
โWasย myย father a vampire?โ
โAbsolutely not.โ She reaches a hand out to me. โOh, Grace, is that what youโre afraid of?โ
I blow out a long breath as the biggest, tightest knot in my stomach unwinds. โAt this moment, I donโt know what Iโm afraid of, Macy. But since youโre not acting like Iโm losing my mind for asking these questionsโand I have a perfect bite mark on my neck at this very momentโI assume that means vampires are real.โ
โThey are, yes.โ
โAnd they go to this school.โ She nods. โYes.โ
โAnd Jaxon is a vampire.โ I hold my breath as I wait for her answer.
โI really think you should talk to him about that, Grace. I meanโโ
โMacy.โ I drop the anger, let her see the fear and frustration that are riding me hard. โPlease.โ
She just looks at me, her face miserable.
โI thought we were friends, not just family.โ โWe are. Of course we are.โ
โThen tell me the truth. Is. Jaxon. Vega. A. Vampire?โ
Macy sighs. โYes.โ
I was expecting itโI wasโand still it explodes over me like a grenade. My knees go out from under me, and I hit the floor hard.
โGrace!โ Macyโs next to me in the space between one second and the next. โAre you okay?โ
โI have no idea.โ I close my eyes, lean my head back against the door, which is conveniently close to where I dropped. โThatโs why he can be outside without a jacket.โ
โYes.โ
โSo that means Liaโฆโ โYes.โ
I nod. โFlint?โ
โNo, no. Flintโs definitely not a vamp.โ
I close my eyes as relief sweeps through me, at least until she continues. โHeโs aโฆโ
โWhat?โ I open one eye. โHeโs a what?โ โIโm not sure youโre ready.โ
โWill I ever be ready? Finish the sentence, please. Heโs aโฆโ
โDragon.โ
Now I open both eyes. โSay that again?โ
She sighs. โHeโs a dragon, Grace. Flint is a dragon.โ
โOf course he is. You mean heโs gotโโ I hold my arms up and kind of flap them up and down.
โYes, heโs got wings.โ
โAndโฆfire?โ I answer my own question. โOf course he does. With a name like Flint, how could he not?โ
My brain is imploding. I can feel it actually turning to mush and folding in on itself under the weight of all this new
information. I mean, who needs LSD when you go to Monster High?
Even worse, something tells me we arenโt done yet. Which is probably what leads me to snark, โAnd that makes you what? A fairy?โ
โIโm not a fairy.โ She sounds insulted.
โNot a fairy, not a vampire, not aโฆdragon?โ Macy sighs. โIโm a witch, Grace.โ
I run her words back through my head another time or five, but still. They make the least amount of sense of anything Iโve heard this afternoon. โIโm sorry?โ
โYou heard me.โ Now sheโs smirking at me. โAnd you want to know something else?โ
โAt this point, no. I donโt. Not even a little bit. Iโm done. My brain isโโ
โYou should have been one, too.โ
