Chapter no 37

Crave by Tracy Wolff

โ€ŒNo Harm, All Foulโ€Œ

I charge out of our room, figuring Iโ€™ll catch Jaxon a few doors down. But the hallway is completely empty. Still, he couldnโ€™t have gone far, so I take off toward the main staircase. Worst-case scenario, I know where his room is, even if a cleaning crew is currently in there.

I finally find him on the stairs, taking them three at a time. Heโ€™s not alone, thoughโ€”Liam and Rafael are with him, and all three of them seem like theyโ€™re in a really big hurry.

I should probably let them go, but heโ€™s the one who came to my room, not the other way around. Which means he wanted to see me.

Itโ€™s that thought that galvanizes me, that has me calling out his name as I move to the top landing.

He stops on a dime. All three of them do, and then theyโ€™re all staring at me out of the same blank eyes. I have a second to try to absorb the direct impact of all that male beauty and intensityโ€”itโ€™s a lotโ€”before Jaxon is bounding back up the stairs.

Liam and Rafael watch for a second, their faces locked in that expressionless look Iโ€™m coming to hate. But then they both give me a little wave, plus Rafael adds a thumbs-up, before they turn away and bound down the stairs.

โ€œWhat are you doing out here?โ€ Jaxon demands, and just

that quickly, heโ€™s in front of me. Only his face isnโ€™t blank. Itโ€™s livid with a mixture of self-loathing and regret, his eyes an incandescent black that has shivers sliding through me for all the wrong reasons.

โ€œMacy said you were looking for me.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t looking for you. I came to make sure you were okay.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ I hold out my arms, do a little self-deprecating shrug. โ€œWell, as you can see, Iโ€™m fine.โ€

He snorts. โ€œPretty sure thatโ€™s a matter of opinion.โ€ โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œIt means, you look like youโ€™re going to fall down any second. I donโ€™t know what you were thinking to come running down the halls after you nearly bled to death. Go back to bed.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to go back to bed. I want to talk to you about what happened this afternoon.โ€

โ€œBlankโ€ doesnโ€™t describe what happens to his face. It goes beyond blank, beyond empty, until thereโ€™s absolutely nothing there. No sign at all of the Jaxon I watched the meteor shower with. Definitely no sign of the boy who kissed me until my knees buckled and my heart nearly exploded.

He looks like a stranger. A cold, emotionless stranger, one who has every intention of ignoring me. But then he finally answers. โ€œYou got hurt. Thatโ€™s what happened.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not all that happened.โ€ I reach for his armโ€”I want to touch him, feel himโ€”but he steps out of reach before my fingers can so much as brush against his shirt.

โ€œItโ€™s the only thing that happened that matters.โ€

Ouch. My heart falls straight to my feet as I struggle with the fact that heโ€™s grouping our kiss in with all the things he thinksย donโ€™tย matter.

For long seconds, I donโ€™t know what to say. But then I ask the one question thatโ€™s been burning inside my brain since I woke up. โ€œAreย youย all right?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not the one you need to worry about.โ€

โ€œBut I am worried about you.โ€ Itโ€™s a lot to admitโ€” especially when heโ€™s working so hard to shut down everything between usโ€”but that doesnโ€™t make it any less true. โ€œYou lookโ€ฆโ€

His eyes meet mine. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ I shrug. โ€œNot okay.โ€ He looks away. โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Itโ€™s obvious he doesnโ€™t want to talk to me right now, so I take a step back. โ€œI guess Iโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ It sounds like the words are dragged out of him.

โ€œFor what?โ€ The apology astounds me. โ€œI didnโ€™t protect you.โ€

โ€œFrom anย earthquake?โ€

His gaze swings back to mine, and for a second, just a second, I can see something in his eyes. Something powerful and terrible and all-consuming. But itโ€™s gone as quickly as it came and then heโ€™s back to showing nothing. โ€œFrom a lot of things.โ€

โ€œFrom what I understand, you saved my life.โ€

He snorts. โ€œThatโ€™s the point. You donโ€™t understand much. Which is why you should go back to your room and forget all about what happened earlier.โ€

โ€œForget about the earthquake?โ€ I ask. โ€œOr forget about you kissing me?โ€ I donโ€™t know where I got the guts to bring it upโ€ฆexcept, truth is, itโ€™s not bravery so much as desperation. I have to know what Jaxonโ€™s thinking and why heโ€™s thinking it.

โ€œForget about it all,โ€ he answers.

โ€œYou know thatโ€™s not going to happen.โ€ I reach for him once more, and this time he doesnโ€™t jerk away. Instead, he just watches me as I rest my hand on his shoulder, hoping the contact will remind him of what it was like to touch me. Hoping it will break through the barriers heโ€™s erected between us.

โ€œYeah, well, it needs to happen. You have no idea what we just did.โ€

โ€œWe kissed, Jaxon. Thatโ€™s all we did.โ€ It felt momentous, importantโ€”it still feels that way to meโ€”but in the grand scheme of things, it really was just a kiss.

โ€œI keep telling you that it doesnโ€™t work like that here.โ€ He shoves a frustrated hand through his hair. โ€œDonโ€™t you get that? Youโ€™ve been a pawn since you got here, a chess piece to move around the board to get the desired result. But nowโ€ฆnow weโ€™ve upped the stakes. This isnโ€™t just a game anymore.โ€

He might mean his words as warnings, but they feel like body blows.

โ€œI was a game to you?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not listening.โ€ His eyes glow incandescent with the effort of holding in emotions I canโ€™t even begin to decipher

โ€”no matter how much I wish I could. โ€œFrom the moment I kissed you. From the moment you got hurt, everything

changed. You were in danger before, but nowโ€”โ€

He breaks off, jaw clenching, throat working. Then says, โ€œNow Iโ€™ve all but put a bullโ€™s eye in the middle of your back and dared someone to take a shot.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t understand. You didnโ€™tย doย anything.โ€

โ€œI didย everything.โ€ He moves then, swift as one of those shooting stars from last night, until his face is right up in mine. โ€œListen to me. You need to stay away from me. Iย needย to stayย awayย from you.โ€

His words send a chill through me, make my mouth go dry and my palms sweat. And still I canโ€™t just walk away. Not when heโ€™s standing right here. โ€œJaxon, please. Youโ€™re not making any sense.โ€

โ€œOnly because you refuse to understand.โ€ He backs away. โ€œI have to go.โ€

The words hang in the air between usโ€”dark and somberโ€” but he doesnโ€™t go. He doesnโ€™t do anything but stand there, staring at me with tortured eyes.

Soย Iย do something. I step forward until our bodies are just

barely brushing against each other.

Itโ€™s not much, but itโ€™s enough to have heat pooling in my stomach and electricity crackling just below my skin. โ€œJaxon.โ€ I whisper his name because my vocal cords have forgotten how to work. He doesnโ€™t answer me, but he doesnโ€™t move away, either.

For one second, two, he just stands there, looking down at me, his gaze locked with mine. His body presses forward into mine.

I whisper his name again, and itโ€™s almost enough. I can see him waver, feel him lean more heavily against me.

But then he snaps out of it, his voice cutting like broken glass as he tells me, โ€œStay away from me, Grace.โ€ He turns away, takes the steps three at a time, and doesnโ€™t stop until heโ€™s on the landing ten feet below. Without turning around, he calls up to me. โ€œItโ€™s the only way youโ€™re getting out of this school alive.โ€

โ€œIs that a threat?โ€ I ask, more shaken than I want to admitโ€”to him or to myself.

โ€œI donโ€™t make threats.โ€ The unspoken โ€œI donโ€™t have toโ€ hangs in the air between us.

Before I can respond, he places his hands on the iron banister and vaults straight over it. I let out a strangled scream and rush to the edge of the staircase, half afraid Iโ€™ll see his mangled body down below. But not only is he not lying broken on the ground three stories below, heโ€™s nowhere to be seen at all. Heโ€™s vanished into thin air.
