DANTE CAME OVER TO VISIT. I KNEW I WASNโT A LOT of fun.
He knew it too. It didnโt seem to matter. โDo you want to talk?โ
โNo,โ I said.
โDo you want me to go?โ โNo,โ I said.
He read poems to me. I thought about the sparrows falling from the sky. As I listened to Danteโs voice, I wondered what my brother would sound like. I wondered if heโd ever read a poem. My mind was full and crowded
โfalling sparrows, my brotherโs ghost, Danteโs voice.
Dante finished reading a poem, then went looking for another. โArenโt you afraid of catching what I have?โ I said.
โNo.โ
โYouโre not afraid?โ โNo.โ
โYouโre not afraid of anything.โ โIโm afraid of lots of things, Ari.โ
I could have askedย What? What are you afraid of?ย I donโt think he would have told me.
