โI Like Standing on My Own Two Feet, butโ
Getting Swept Off Them Feels Surprisingly Good, Too
For long seconds, I canโt move. I canโt think. I can only stare up at him in a kind of openmouthed shock as my brain short-circuits. Because Iโm not actually in Jaxonโs arms, right? I mean, I canโt be.
Except I am. And they feel really good around me.ย Really
good.ย Plus, being in his arms, bride-style, gives me an up- close-and-personal view of his face. And can I just say how unfair it is that heโs even hotter from an inch away? And he smells amazing, too.
His smellโlike snow and orangeโis what pushes me over the edge, what has me struggling against him like a madwoman in my effort to be put back down. Because if he carries me all the way to school looking and smelling and feeling like he does, Iโm going to be a total incoherent mess. โCan you please stop wiggling around so much?โ he
demands as I attempt to push myself out of his arms.
โJust let me down, then.โ I glance at Macy for support, but sheโs staring at us like she thinks she might be getting punked. Since sheโs clearly not going to be any help, I turn back to Jaxon. โYou canโt carry me all the way back to school!โ
There isnโt so much as a hitch in his stride. โWatch me.โ
โJaxon, be reasonable. Itโs a long walk.โ โWhatโs your point?โ
I squirm around some more, trying to force him to put me down, but that just makes him tighten his hold.
โMy point is Iโm too heavy.โ Again with the incredulous look.
โIโm serious.โ I put my hands on his chest and use real effort to push. His arms donโt budge from around me. If Iโm being honest, I really donโt want him to put me down. My ankle is full-on throbbing now, and walking on it is going to be a nightmare. But that doesnโt mean I should let him damage himself trying to help me. โPut me down before you hurt yourself.โ
โHurt myself?โ The eyebrow arch I spent way too much time thinking about last night is back. โAre youย tryingย to insult me?โ
โIโm trying to get you to let go of me. You canโt carry me all the way back toโโ
โGrace?โ he interrupts.
I wait for him to say something, but when he doesnโt, I answer, โWhat?โ in what could, perhaps, be described as not the nicest tone.
โShut up.โ
Part of me is super insulted at his words, and the matter- of-fact way he says them, but the part of me thatโs actually in control of my tongue does exactly what he asks and shuts up. I mean, I suppose there are worse things in the world than being carried by a super-sexy guy instead of struggling along in terrible pain. Maybe.
With me in Jaxonโs arms, we move three times as fast as
we were when I was limping with every step. Before I know it, weโre through the castle doors, striding up the stairs.
When we get to our room, Macy unlocks the door and holds the weirdass beads back as she tells Jaxon to, โGo on in.โ
Seconds later, he deposits me on my bed and I think thatโs going to be the end of it. But then he reaches down and pulls off my boot.
โI can take it from here,โ I tell him. โThanks for your help.โ
He shoots me a look that tells me to shut up again, this time without him ever having uttered the words. Which embarasses me so much that I try to pull my foot away from him and start peeling my sock off on my own.
โI sprained my ankle,โ I snark. โIโm not dying of consumption.โ
โYeah, well, the night is young.โ
โHey! Whatโs that supposed to mean?โ I glare at him.
โIt means youโve been here three days, and this is the second time Iโve had to get you out of trouble.โ
โSeriously? Youโre going to hold me responsible for a
windstormย now?โ
โI am.โ He wraps his hand around my calf and gently but firmly eases my leg over the edge of the bed so he can look at my ankle. โYou didnโt see Macy falling out ofย herย tree, did you?โ
โIt wasnโtโโ Macy starts, but no way am I going to let him get away with blaming me for this.
โHerย branch didnโt break!โ I interrupt. โMineย did. What was I supposed to do? Grab on to the trunk andโ Oww!โ I try to yank my foot away as he probes at a particularly sore spot.
He ignores me, though his touchโalready softโgets even gentler. โThereโs no swelling and only a little bruising, so I donโt think you broke anything.โ
โI already told you it was just sprained.โ I pull my leg away, but with much less force this time. Something about the feel of his hands on my leg, his skin against mine, has me especially unnerved. โYou can go now.โ
This time, the look he gives me is half amused, halfย donโt
push your luck. And, despite that, also super sexy. Which is completely absurd, but that doesnโt make it any less true. Heather would die if she saw me nowโtwo small steps away from whimpering andย sighingย over some ridiculously commanding guy. Itโs gross, and normally Iโd put him in his place. But the fact that heโs all growly like this because heโs worried about me and wanting to make sure Iโm okay? I donโt know. Somehow it makes a difference.
โShould I get ice?โ Macy asks for the first time since Jaxon overrode her objection. Sheโs currently standing near her bed, all but wringing her hands and trying not to show how freaked out she is that Jaxon is in our room.
I turn to answerโand hopefully reassure herโbut realize sheโs talking to Jaxon. You know, the guy she spent ten minutes warning me aboutย beforeย the snowball fight. โEt tu, Brute?โ I say with a roll of my eyes.
She shrugs, a little shamefaced, as Jaxon answers, โThatโd be great.โ Then she all but runs to the doorโat least until he smiles his thanks. Then she freezes. Like, actuallyย freezesย in the middle of walking, one foot off the floor. โAlso,โ he adds, โdo you happen to have an Ace bandage? I can wrap her foot before I go.โ
She doesnโt answer. โMacy?โ
She still doesnโt answer.
Jaxon glances at me, both brows raised, but I just roll my eyes. Then clap extra-loud to get her attention.
โMacy?โ
โOh yeah. Ice. Iโm on it.โ
โSo no bandage, then?โ Jaxon asks.
โAnd a bandage. Yes. Absolutely. I have a few, actually.โ Suddenly sheโs stumbling over her words and her feet as she rushes to her bureau and starts wildly opening drawers.
She finally finds what sheโs looking for in the bottom drawer and spins around, a tightly wrapped hot-pink bandage in her hand. โDoes this work, Jaxon?โ
โItโs perfect, thanks.โ
She glows under his praise, and itโs all I can do not to make a teasing comment. But seriously, if sheโs not careful, sheโs going to turn into one of his minions. So much forย you can tell me how he hurt you.ย Traitor.
I reach out to take the bandage from her, but Jaxon gets there first. โI reallyย canย do it, you know,โ I tell him.
โMaybe I want to do it for you.โ
As she heads for the door, Macy makes a sound like the melting is actually starting, and even I have to admit, itโs a good line. Then again, convincing myself to like Jaxon has never been hard. Iโve been attracted to him from the very beginning, even when I was also supremely annoyed by him.
โWhat? No protests?โ he asks a little sardonically.
โAre you going to wrap it or not?โ I grouse, ignoring his
question because answering it would be too embarrassing.
He ducks his head and gets to work, but not before I see the small grin heโs got going on. His scar pulls on the very edges of his lips, but that just turns the smile into a crooked little smirk that is a million times hotter than it should be.
His fingers are cold as he wraps up my ankle, but his hands are so, so gentle. I find myself relaxing despite myself, my muscles going lax as he strokes a finger back and forth against my calf.
And when I say his name this time, even I can hear the yearning. His head snaps up, his dark, bottomless gaze locking with mine.
His hand on my leg becomes firmer, more insistent as he leans in just a little. His wildly sexy scent seems even stronger now than it did when he was carrying me. It fills my senses, makes my mouth water and my hands ache to touch him. Makes me want to press my face into the curve of his neck and just breathe him in.
Iโm already on edge from his closeness, and these new longings he sets off in me have my breath catching in my throat. My heart goes wild and, as he leans in just a little farther, my whole body lights up like the aurora borealis Iโm still dying to see.
โGrace.โ He says my name like itโs a promise. Itโs the last straw, and I gasp, full-on melting commencing deep inside me. Iโd say his name back, but Iโve lost control of my vocal cords. And pretty much the rest of my body, too.
His hand comes up to cup my cheek, and I close my eyes, lean into the caress. And then nearly jump out of my skin as the door crashes open and he yanks his hand back.
โIโve got the ice,โ Macy says. โI even crushed it up andโโ She stops cold, her eyes going wide as she senses the tension in the air. With the way Jaxon is leaning over me, it doesnโt take a genius to figure out what she interrupted, and for a second, it looks like sheโs going to ease her way back out of the room.
But then the moment fades, and Jaxon stands up, heading toward the door. โApply the ice for twenty minutes and see how it feels. If itโs not better, ice it again in an hour. Got it?โ
โYeah, Iโve got it,โ I manage to rasp through my still-tight throat.
โGood.โ He gives Macy another brief smile, then shakes his head as she lets out a small whimper. He doesnโt say anything more until heโs almost out of my room. Just before he leaves, he pauses, hand on the doorknob, and says, โStay away from Flint, Grace. Heโs not what you think.โ
The words snap me out of my stunned silenceโand my politeness. โFlint and I are friends. And you donโt get to tell me what to do.โ I barely manage to stop myself from adding, No matter how much you intrigue me.
I expect him to fire backโheโs arrogant enough to think he should always be obeyedโbut instead, he just tilts his head and studies me for a few long moments. Then he says, โOkay.โ
โOkay?โ I narrow my eyes at his easy concession. โThatโs it?โ
โThatโs it.โ He turns to leave.
โI didnโt think it would be that easy.โ
He gives me that inscrutable look Iโm already coming to dislike. โThis is going to be a lot of things, Grace. Easy isnโt one of them.โ
And then heโs gone. As usual. Double damn it.
