โIย buried my motherโfor the second timeโin Colorado. This time, the funeral wasnโt a sham. This time, her body was the one in the casket. And this time, I wasnโt just surrounded by the family Iโd found in the Naturals program.โ
My fatherโs family was there as well. Aunts and uncles and cousins. My father. Nonna.
Iโd told them a version of the truthโthat Iโd been working with the FBI, that my mother had died at the hands of the same people responsible for my cousin Kateโs death, that Laurel was my sister.
Sheโs you, and sheโs me, and sheโsย ours. My motherโs words had never been far from my mind in the days since weโd wrapped up the Mastersโ case.
The FBI had identified and neutralized nine killers that nightโseven Masters, one apprentice, and the man born to rule them all. Six killers in custody, threeโMalcolm Lowell, Director Sterling, and TA Geoffโdead. The FBI was keeping the case quiet for now, but it wouldnโt stay quiet for long.
In the meantime, Laurel needed something that I couldnโt give her alone. โYou will come back to the house with me,โ Nonna declared, hoisting my
little sister up like she was nothing. โWe will make cookies. And you!โ She pointed a finger at Michael. โYou will help us.โ
Michael grinned. โSir, yes, sir.โ
Nonna narrowed her eyes at him. โI hear you have a problem with the kissing,โ she said, having jumped to that conclusion when Iโd been reluctant to talk about my romantic status months earlier. โIf you behave yourself, I will give you some pointers.โ
Dean almost choked trying to keep a straight face. That was Nonna to a T
โhalf general, half mother hen. She was the one Iโd come home toโnot my father, who couldnโt quite look me in the eye.
Watching Nonna putting Michael handily in his place, Judd smiled slightly. โYour grandmother,โ he said. โSheโs single?โ
One by one, the others cleared away, leaving me alone at my motherโs
gravesite. The therapist the FBI had sent me to had told me that there would be good days and bad days. Sometimes it was hard to tell the difference.
I wasnโt sure how long I stood there by myself before I heard footsteps behind me. I turned to see Agent Briggs. He looked exactly as he had the day Iโd first met him, the day heโd thrown down the gauntlet and used my motherโs case to tempt me into meeting with him.
โDirector.โ I greeted him with his new title.
โYouโre sure,โ FBI Director Briggs said, โthat this is what you want?โ
Iย wantedย to go back to our house in Quantico, like nothing had changed. Iย wantedย to save people. Iย wantedย to work behind the scenes, the way we always had.
But people didnโt always get what they wanted.
โThis is where I need to be,โ I said. โIf anyone can give Laurel a normal childhood, itโs my grandmother. And I canโt abandon herโnot after everything thatโs happened.โ
Briggs studied me for a moment. โWhat if you didnโt have to?โ
I waited, knowing he wasnโt the type of person to bear silence for long. โThereโs a field office in Denver,โ Briggs said. โAnd I hear Michael has
acquired a large house not far from your grandmotherโs. Dean and Sloane are in. Celine Delacroix has thrown her hat in the ring. Liaโs holding out for a raise.โ
โWe donโt get paid,โ I commented.
Director Briggs shrugged. โYou do now. Weโve got a task force running down the remaining Masters emeriti. The director of national security would prefer to keep any teenagers in our employ away from it, given the attention the case is likely to attract. But youโre no longer minors, and there are other casesโฆ.โ
Other victims, other killers.
โWhat about Agent Sterling?โ I asked.
Briggs smiled ruefully. โI proposed. She keeps turning me downโ something about the two of us having been down that road before.โ The look on his face reminded me that Briggs had a competitive streak. He wouldnโt let his ex go without a fight. โSheโs put in a request for a transfer to the Denver field office,โ Briggs added. โI believe Judd said something about making a move as well.โ
When Iโd decided not to return to Quantico, Iโd thought that I was giving up everything. But I should have realizedโhome wasnโt a place.
โWe could go to college,โ I said, thinking about the others. โGraduate and enroll at the FBI Academy in Quantico. Do things by the book.โ
โButโฆโ Briggs prompted.
But weโve never been normal. Weโve never done things by the book.
โI was thinking,โ I said after a moment. โCeline more than proved herself
on this last case. There have to be others.โ
Other young people with incredible gifts. Others with no home and no direction, with ghosts in their pasts and the potential to do so much more.
โOther Naturals,โ Briggs filled in. โTo continue the program.โ
Hearing him say the words gave life to something inside of meโa spark, a sense of purpose, aย flame. Feeling that, letting myself feel it, I held his gaze and nodded.
Slowly, the newly minted director of the FBI smiled.
Game on.
