Chapter no 48

Bad Blood (The Naturals, #4)

โ€ŒWe sent Celine photographs of our victims. And then we waited. Waiting was not one of the Naturals programโ€™s collective strong suits. Within an hour, Agent Sterling was out working the case again, but the rest of us were stuck twiddling our thumbs at the hotel. Waiting for Celine to put her skills to theโ€Œ

test. Waiting for the truth. Waiting to find out if our efforts would lead us any closer to my mother.

โ€œDean.โ€ Of all of us, Lia was either the best at waiting or the worst. โ€œTruth or dare?โ€

โ€œSeriously?โ€ I asked Lia.

Her lips tilted upward ever so slightly. โ€œThereโ€™s a certain tradition to it, donโ€™t you think?โ€ She sat down on the arm of the couch. โ€œTruth or dare, Dean?โ€

For a moment, I thought he would refuse to answer. โ€œTruth.โ€

Lia looked down at her hands, examining her fingernails. โ€œHow long are you going to be mad at me?โ€

You donโ€™t sound vulnerable. You donโ€™t sound like the answer could break you.

โ€œIโ€™m not mad at you,โ€ Dean said, his voice cracking.

โ€œHeโ€™s mad at himself,โ€ Michael clarified loftily. โ€œAlso: me. Definitely me.โ€

Dean glared at him. โ€œTruth or dare, Townsend.โ€ Those words werenโ€™t issued like a question. They were a challenge.

Michael offered Dean a charming, glittering smile. โ€œDare.โ€

For almost a minute, the two of them were caught in a staring competition. Then Dean broke the silence. โ€œAgent Starmans is downstairs patrolling the perimeter of the hotel. I dare you to moon him.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ย Clearly, Michael had not been expecting those words to exit Deanโ€™s mouth.

โ€œThe termย mooningย arises from the vaguely moon-shaped form of the human buttocks,โ€ Sloane volunteered helpfully. โ€œAlthough the practice dates back to the Middle Ages, the terminology was not common until the mid-

1960s.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ I asked Dean. I was a natural profiler. He was my boyfriend, and I had in no way seen this coming. Then again, heย hadย promised the universe a significant reduction in brooding if it returned Lia to us intact.

โ€œYou heard the man,โ€ I told Michael.

Michael stood up and dusted off his lapels. โ€œMooning Agent Starmans,โ€ he said solemnly, โ€œwould be my pleasure.โ€ He stalked to the balcony, let himself out, waited for Agent Starmans to pass by, and then called down to the man. When Starmans looked up, Michael saluted him. With military precision, he turned and bared his backside.

I was laughing so hard, I almost didnโ€™t hear Michael as he came back in and turned to Dean. โ€œTruth or dare, Redding?โ€

โ€œTruth.โ€

Michael crossed his arms over his waist in a way that made me think Dean was going to regret that choice. โ€œAdmit it: Iโ€™ve grown on you.โ€

Sloane frowned. โ€œThat wasnโ€™t a question.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ Michael said, grinning, before returning to torture Dean. โ€œDo you like me? Am I one of your closest bosom buddies? Would you cry your little heart out if I was gone?โ€

Michael and Dean had been at each otherโ€™s throats for as long as Iโ€™d known them.

โ€œDo. You. Like. Me.โ€ Michael repeated the question, this time with gestures.

Dean glanced at Lia, whose presence was a reminder that he couldnโ€™t get away with lying.

โ€œYou have your moments,โ€ Dean mumbled. โ€œWhat was that?โ€ Michael cupped his ear.

โ€œI donโ€™tย haveย to like you,โ€ Dean snapped back. โ€œWeโ€™re family.โ€

โ€œBosom buddies,โ€ Michael corrected loftily. Dean gave him a dirty look. I grinned.

โ€œYour turn again,โ€ Lia reminded Dean, nudging him with the tip of her foot.

Dean resisted the urge to target Michael. โ€œTruth or dare, Cassie?โ€

There were very few things I kept from Deanโ€”very few things he couldnโ€™t ask me, if he wanted to know.

โ€œDare,โ€ I said.

Sloane cleared her throat. โ€œI would just like to point out,โ€ she said, โ€œthat this is one of only two-point-three percent of hotel rooms that come with a blender.โ€

Hours ticked by. The blender and the minibar proved to be a dangerous

combination.

โ€œTruth or dare, Lia?โ€ It was my turn, and I could feel reality creeping back up on us. Every round that went by was that much longer without hearing from Celine. It was that much closer until the point in time when Agent Sterling would either have to charge the Darby family or let them go.

โ€œTruth,โ€ Lia replied. It was her first in a very long game. โ€œWhy did you go after Darby alone?โ€ I asked her.

Lia stood up and stretched, arching her back and twisting from one side to the other. She had the advantage in Truth or Dare.

No one else in this room could lie and get away with it.

โ€œI got out,โ€ Lia said finally. โ€œMy mother didnโ€™t.โ€ She stopped stretching and stood very still. โ€œI ran away when I hit puberty. By the time Briggs found me in New Yorkโ€ฆโ€ She shook her head. โ€œThere was nothing left for us to save.โ€

Nothing left of the cult. Nothing left of your mother.

โ€œSome of Darbyโ€™s followers will just find someone else to latch on to,โ€ Lia continued. โ€œBut thereโ€™s at least a chance that with him in prison, some of them will go home.โ€

I thought of Melody and Shane. And then I thought of Liaโ€”younger and more vulnerable than the girl I knew now.

โ€œBesides,โ€ Lia added flippantly, โ€œI wanted to stick it to Michael for that stunt he pulled in New York.โ€ She turned on the tips of her toes. โ€œTruth or dare, Sloane?โ€

โ€œWould choosing truth involve a question about beagle and/or flamingo statistics?โ€ Sloane asked hopefully.

โ€œDoubtful,โ€ Michael opined. โ€œDare,โ€ Sloane told Lia.

A slow, wicked grin spread over Liaโ€™s face. โ€œI dare you,โ€ she said, โ€œto hack into Agent Sterlingโ€™s computer and change her wallpaper to the picture I took of Michael mooning our Agent Starmans.โ€
