Chapter no 45

Bad Blood (The Naturals, #4)

โ€ŒBy the time the others woke up the next morning, Sloane had developed a complete blueprint of the Serenity Ranch compound.โ€Œ

Agent Sterling helped herself to a cup of coffee, then turned to Lia. โ€œPull a stunt like that again and youโ€™re out. Out of the program. Out of the house.โ€

Not a threat. Not a warning. A promise.

Lia didnโ€™t bat an eye, but when Judd cleared his throat and she turned to face him, she actually winced.

โ€œI can keep the FBI from treating you like youโ€™re disposable,โ€ Judd told Lia, his voice even and low. โ€œBut I canโ€™t make you value yourself.โ€ Next to Dean, Judd had been the one constant in Liaโ€™s life since she was thirteen years old. โ€œI canโ€™t force you not to take chances with your own life. But you didnโ€™t see me after my daughter died, Lia. If something happens to you? If I go to that place again? I canโ€™t promise Iโ€™m coming back.โ€

Lia found it easier to be the recipient of anger than affection. Judd knew that, just like he knew sheโ€™d read the truth in every word.

โ€œOkay,โ€ Lia said, holding up her hands and stepping back. โ€œIโ€™m a bad, bad girl. Point taken. Can we focus on what Sloane has to say?โ€

Dean appeared in the doorway and registered Liaโ€™s presence. โ€œYouโ€™re okay.โ€

โ€œMore or less.โ€ Liaโ€™s reply was flippant, but she took a step toward him. โ€œDeanโ€”โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Dean said.

No, you donโ€™t want to hear it? No, she doesnโ€™t get to do this to you?

Dean didnโ€™t elaborate.

โ€œThank goodness youโ€™re home, Lia.โ€ Michael strolled into the room. โ€œDean is awfully prone to talking aboutย feelingsย when youโ€™re MIA.โ€

โ€œWould this be an inappropriate time to say โ€˜ahaโ€™?โ€ Sloane interjected from the floor. โ€œBecauseย aha!โ€

If Sloane had been even the least bit capable of guile, I would have thought sheโ€™d come to Liaโ€™s rescue on purpose.

โ€œWhat did you find?โ€ I asked, earning a look from Dean that said he knew quite well that Iย wasย capable of throwing Lia a lifeline.

โ€œI started with Liaโ€™s drawings and compared them to satellite photographs of the Serenity Ranch compound.โ€ Sloane stood, bouncing to the tips of her toes and walking the perimeter of the diagram sheโ€™d laid out on the floor. โ€œEverything lined up, exceptโ€ฆโ€ Sloane knelt to point a finger at one of the smaller buildings on her diagram. โ€œThis structure is roughly seven-point-six percent smaller on the inside than it should be.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the chapel.โ€ Lia tossed her ponytail over her shoulder. โ€œNo specific religious ties, but you wouldnโ€™t know that from looking at it.โ€

I could hear Melodyโ€™s monotone in my memory.ย In Serenity, Iโ€™ve found balance. In Serenity, Iโ€™ve found peace.

I turned my attention back to Sloane. โ€œWhat does it mean that the building is smaller on the inside than it should be?โ€

โ€œIt means that either the walls are abnormally thickโ€ฆโ€ Sloane caught her bottom lip in her teeth, then let it go. โ€œOr thereโ€™s a hidden room.โ€

I didnโ€™t have to sink very far into Holland Darbyโ€™s psyche to conclude that he was the kind of man who hid his secrets well.ย Thatโ€™s your serenity. Thatโ€™s your peace.

โ€œUnfortunately,โ€ Agent Sterling said, โ€œnone of that gives me probable cause to search the property.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Lia said, reaching into her pocket. โ€œBut this does.โ€

She pulled a small glass vial out of her pocket. The liquid inside was milky white. โ€œNot sure what it is,โ€ she said, โ€œbut Darby keeps his flock well- dosed.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s drugging them.โ€ Deanโ€™s stony face showed no signs of softeningโ€” toward her or toward the situation.

Agent Sterling took the vial from Lia. โ€œIโ€™ll get this to the lab. If itโ€™s a controlled substance, I can get a warrant to search the compound.โ€

Beside me, Sloane stared at the vial. โ€œIโ€™d give it even odds that itโ€™s some kind of opiate.โ€

Your mother died of an overdose. I profiled Sloane as a matter of instinct, but another part of me couldnโ€™t help profiling someone elseโ€”somethingย else. Nightshade and whoever in this town had recruited him.

Thereโ€™s a thin line between medicine and poison.
