โโWe knew this was a long shot.โ Briggs addressed those words to Sterling, even though Dean and I were the ones whoโd come bearing the news. โBut the dates matched, and the MO was in the ballpark. We had to check it out.โโ
โSo you said.โ Sterling clipped the words. โAnd so said the director.โ
I thought back to what Iโd seen of that exchange. Director Sterling had spoken only to Briggsโnot to his daughter, not to Judd.
โDonโt make this about your father,โ Briggs told Sterling, his voice low. โI didnโt. You did.โ Sterlingโs tone reminded me that Briggs was her ex-
husband as well as her partner. โThis was never a long shot, Tanner. If youโd asked meโif you or my father had even bothered to remember that there was a profiler in the roomโI could have told you that there was too much anger here to fit with what we know about the Masters, too little control.โ
The implications of that statement hit me like a semitruck. โYou knew this case wasnโt related to the Masters?โ My voice came out strained.ย You knew, and you let me believeโ
โI knew that a girl was missing,โ Agent Sterling said softly.
โAnd you never thought to share any of this with me?โ Briggsโs voice hardened.
An unflinching Sterling met his gaze. โYou never asked.โ After a momentโs silence, she turned to me. There was a subtle shift in her tone, one that reminded me that once upon a time, sheโd told me that when she looked at me, she saw herself. โYou can never let yourself become so focused on one possibilityโor one caseโthat you lose your objectivity, Cassie. The moment a case becomes about whatย youย needโrevenge, approval, redemption, controlโฆyouโve already lost. Thereโs a thin line between following your gut and seeing what you want to see, and thatโs not a lesson I could teach you.โ She glanced back at Briggs. โWe all have to learn that one on our own.โ
Youโre thinking about the Nightshade case. My profiling instinct went into overdrive. Years ago, Briggs and Sterling hadnโt known that the killer they were hunting was one of the Masters. They hadnโt known that when they went after Nightshade, heโd go after one of their ownโScarlett Hawkins.
Juddโs daughter. Sterlingโs best friend.
โAnd what the hell kind of lesson were you trying to teach me?โ Agent Briggs bit out. โNot to make decisions without discussing them with you first? Not to take your fatherโs side on anything? Not to ask Judd to trust me?โ
โI went above the directorโs head on the Naturals program for a reason,โ Sterling replied, emotional armor firmly in place. โMy father is very good at his job. Heโs got a mile-wide Machiavellian streak. And he can be very persuasive.โ
โI made a judgment call,โ Briggs shot back. โThis has nothing to do with your father.โ
โHe always wanted a son,โ Sterling said quietly. โA driven, ambitious, sculpted-in-his-own-image son.โ
Briggsโs whole body went taut. โIs this about Scarlett? You still blameโโ โI blame myself.โ Sterling dropped those words like a bomb. โThis isnโt
about you, or my father. This is about not letting any of us get so obsessed with one case, withย winning, that we donโt see or care about anything else. Scarlett died on the altar ofย winning, Tanner. Masters or no Masters, Iโll be damned before we do the same thing to these kids.โ
โAnd what about whatย thisย case is doing to Michael?โ Briggs shot back. โSacrificing his psychological well-being on the altar of your self- righteousness,ย thatโsย just fine?โ
โI hate it when Mommy and Daddy fight.โ Lia sidled up beside me. โDo you think theyโre going to get a divorce?โ Lia had never met a grease fire she didnโt want to throw water onto.
Briggs pinched the bridge of his nose.
โBriggs and Sterling are already divorced,โ Sloane said helpfully as she peeled off her latex gloves and joined the melee.
Dean intervened before the situation could escalate. โWe still have a missing person.โ
That was why Agent Sterling hadnโt fought Briggsโs decision to come here. I thought of Celine, thought of the insidious emotion that had risen up inside of me when Iโd realized what this case wasโand what it wasnโt.
You donโt wish this girl had been burned alive, Cassie. Deanโs words echoed in my mind.ย You donโt wish sheโd died screaming. Youโre not capable of it.
I wanted that to be true.
โWe have to find out who took Celine.โ My throat tightening, I wove my fingers through Deanโs, Daniel Redding and his mind games be damned. โIf sheโs alive, we have to find her. And if sheโs dead, weโre going to find out who killed her.โ
Iโd spent the past two and a half months in the basement, staring at the Mastersโ handiwork. Iโd sat down across from the devil and offered him a
deal. But no matter what I did, no matter whatย weย did, the reality of the situation was that I might never find my mother. Even if we caught one of the Mastersโor two or threeโthe endless cycle of serial murder might never stop.
There was so much that wasnโt in my control. But this was.
โWhereโs Michael?โ Sloane asked suddenly. โNinety-three percent of the time when there is an emotional or physical altercation, Michael is within a four-foot radius of the action.โ
There was a beat of silence, and then Agent Briggs reiterated Sloaneโs question. โWhereย isย Michael?โ
โI left him in Celineโs room,โ I said. What I didnโt sayโwhat I should have realized much earlierโwas that I was willing to bet a lot of money that he hadnโt stayed in that room for long.
