Chapter no 27

The War of Two Queens (Blood and Ash, #4)

I paced the bedchamber the following afternoon, the meal one of the less- chatty Handmaidens had brought in devoured only because I couldnโ€™t afford to weaken.

Another white gown had been brought in with the food. Opting to wear what I had the day before, Iโ€™d destroyed the gown with a spark of eather. I shouldnโ€™t have used the essence for such a childish thing, but the momentary joy it had brought was hard to regret.

Every so often, I sent the double doors a glare. I hadnโ€™t seen or heard from the Blood Queen since theyโ€™d returned me to my chambers the evening before. Iโ€™d stayed in this damn room, only because I didnโ€™t want to risk Kieranโ€™s and Reaverโ€™s safety in addition to Casteelโ€™s.

Iโ€™d checked in with Kieran through theย notam, letting him know that both Casteel and I were okay. He was relieved, but through the connection, I knew he had his doubts about Casteel.

I had doubts, as well.

My touch wouldโ€™ve only brought him a few hours of reliefโ€”if that. Maybe not even that long. All I could do was pray that heโ€™d been given blood and food. That healing those injuries had given him a longer reprieve. Iโ€™d desperately tried to sleep. To reach Casteel. I hadnโ€™t been able to.

The room was too quiet and too big. Too lonely and too familiar. Tooโ€” I stopped myself.

None of that would help. What would, was focusing on what came next, which was what Iโ€™d been turning over in my mind for hours. Our plan had been to get into the capital and free Casteel and my father. That was still the plan. Except weโ€™d been technically captured, and I didnโ€™t know where my father was being kept if not here.

I would have to force Isbeth to tell me where he was when I came back for him.

I hated thatโ€”utterlyย loathedย the idea of leaving Ires behind. But I had to get Casteel out, and soon.

Because he was not well.

Iโ€™d healed what injuries I could, but he was teetering on the edge of bloodlust and at risk of losing parts of himself. I couldnโ€™t allow that to happen.

Searching out Kieranโ€™s unique imprint, I found the cedar-rich sensation.

Liessa?

A wry grin tugged at my lips.ย Donโ€™t call me that. My Queen, instead?

I sighed.ย How about neither?

His chuckle tickled its way through me.ย Whatโ€™s going on? We need to get out of here.

There was a pause.ย What are you thinking?

We need to get to one of the Temples. Casteel has to be held somewhere near there. Underground. I paced by the window.ย We have the spell. Once we find the entrance to the tunnels, we can use it. Itโ€™s what weโ€™d need to do next that Iโ€™m not so sure about.

Several moments of silence passed where I felt the woodsy sensation surrounding me.ย We can try the way we planned to get in.

Through the mines?

Yes. We can try to access them. Orโ€ฆ

My heart thumped heavily.ย Theyโ€™ll expect that. There must be a better way.

Fight our way out.

I stopped at the window, staring across the capital.ย Iโ€™m not sure thatโ€™s a better option.

Fighting will be our only option no matter what,ย Kieran reasoned.

Either through one of the gates or from inside the Rise and into the mines.

We hashed it out, going back and forth until Kieran decided.ย The quickest way is to go straight for the eastern gates. We have Reaver. We have you. We can fight.

I worried my lower lip.ย If we do thatโ€”if I do thatโ€”we risk people seeing me as a demis. We risk the people believing the worst about us and fearing what is to come.

We do.ย There was another gulf of silence.ย But right now, we canโ€™t worry about that. Thatโ€™s not our concern. Cas is. Getting the hell out of here is. And if that means taking down a part of the Rise, then we take it down, Poppy.

I closed my eyes. The essence in my chest thrummed.

We canโ€™t save everyone,ย Kieran reminded me.ย But we can save the ones we love.

A jolt ran through me. Iโ€™d known when speaking with the generals that there was a chance our plans could crumble around us. That weโ€™d need to take down the Rises. That there would be untold loss of life. That weโ€™d become the monsters the people of Solis feared.

And that stood true now.

Kieran mustโ€™ve sensed my acceptance because his next words were:ย We just need a distraction.

A distraction. A big one that would give us time to make our way through Wayfair and to the Temples.

My eyes opened, and I focused on the black stone of the Rise, looming in the distance.ย I have an idea.

My patience was stretched to its limits as I sat on the thickly cushioned chair in the alcove of the main floor of the Great Hall. A dozen knights and Handmaidens lined the wall behind me.

The sun had just begun to set for the evening when the Blood Queen summoned my presence. And yet, here I sat as sheย mingled.

I scanned the packed floor, the faces of so many mortals blurring together as they chatted and vied for a few moments ofย herย time. She moved among them, flanked by Millicent and another Handmaiden. Like a vibrant bird, ruby crown shining, she smiled graciously as the mortals bowed. She didnโ€™t wear white tonight. She, like Millicent, was draped in crimson.

I wasnโ€™t quite sure how the gown remained on her body. Or if the upper half was made of some sort of body paint. It was that tight and sleeveless,

defying gravity. What neckline it had plunged to her navel, revealing far more than I ever wanted to see, consideringโ€”whether or not I wanted to admit itโ€”she was my mother. The lower part of the gown was looser, but I didnโ€™t dare look too long at the gossamer fabric. I didnโ€™t need that trauma in my life.

โ€œYou look as if youโ€™re enjoying yourself.โ€

At the sound of Malikโ€™s voice, I stiffened even more. โ€œIโ€™m having the time of my life.โ€

There was a brief, rough chuckle as he brushed past my chair, sitting on one of the empty two that were on either side of me. โ€œIโ€™m sure you are.โ€

I said nothing for a few moments. โ€œI have no idea why she summoned me to the Great Hall.โ€

โ€œShe wanted you to see how loved she is,โ€ Malik replied. โ€œIn case the display in the Great Hall wasnโ€™t sufficient.โ€

Glancing over at him, I watched him lift a glass of red liquid to his lips. I couldnโ€™t be sure it was wine. He had spoken softly, but the knights and Handmaidens were close enough to have heard him. No one else was around. What Iโ€™d felt from him the day before preyed on my mind as I returned my attention to the floor. โ€œOf course, they love her. Theyโ€™re the elite of Carsodonia. The wealthiest. As long as their lives are easy, they will love whoever sits on that throne.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re not the only ones. You saw that for yourself.โ€

I had. โ€œOnly she gives Blessings with Atlantian blood.โ€ I looked at him again. He shrugged. โ€œSomething that cannot have any long-lasting effects.โ€

He took another drink.

โ€œAnd she has them afraidโ€”โ€

โ€œOf you,โ€ he spoke. โ€œThe Harbinger.โ€

I forced a slow, even breath. โ€œWhat she told the people yesterday was a lie. Those in Oak Ambler and the other cities havenโ€™t been abused. You, no matter what you think now, have to know that the Atlantiansโ€”your father

โ€”would never have done what she claimed.โ€ Malik once more had no response.

โ€œThe people here will eventually learn the truth,โ€ I continued into the silence. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t believe that every mortal in Carsodonia believes her to be a benevolent Queen. Nor do they support the Rite.โ€

Malik lowered his glass. โ€œYouโ€™d be right not to believe that.โ€

I watched him closely, opening my senses to him as he stared out over the floor. The cracks were still in those shields. โ€œI saw Casteel yesterday.โ€

His face showed nothing, but I caught the sudden taste of sourness.

Shame.

โ€œHe wasnโ€™t in good shape.โ€ I lowered my voice as I clasped the arms of the chair. โ€œHe was nearly lost to bloodlust. Heโ€™d been injured andโ€”โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ His jaw was hard, and when he spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper. โ€œI cleaned him up the best I could after the Queen sent you such a lovely gift.โ€

Malik had been to see him.

Casteel hadnโ€™t shared that, but there really hadnโ€™t been many opportunities for him to relay information. Someoneย hadย wrapped his hand. That had to mean something. That, and the raw agony I felt from Malik. What it meant exactly, I wasnโ€™t sure.

I leaned toward him, and the shoulders under the white shirt tensed. โ€œYou know how to find him, then,โ€ I whispered. โ€œTell meโ€”โ€

โ€œCareful, Queen of Flesh and Fire,โ€ Malik murmured with a brittle twist of his lips. โ€œThat is a very dangerous road youโ€™re embarking upon.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

His gaze slid to mine. โ€œYou donโ€™t know much if you think I will answer that question.โ€

I tamped down the rising tide of anger. โ€œI felt your pain. Tasted it.โ€

A muscle began ticking in his jaw. โ€œThat was, by the way, very rude of you,โ€ he said after a moment. โ€œAnd it hurt.โ€

โ€œYou lived.โ€

He gave a short huff of laughter. โ€œYeah, I lived.โ€ He took another drink. โ€œThatโ€™s what I do.โ€

The sardonic twist of his words had me studying his features. โ€œWhy? Why are you here. Withย her? Itโ€™s not because she opened your eyes to anything, let alone the truth. Sheโ€™s not that persuasive.โ€

Malik said nothing as he stared ahead, but I saw his attention shift beyond the Blood Queen to the dark-haired Handmaiden. It was brief. I wouldโ€™ve missed it if I hadnโ€™t been watching him so closely.

โ€œItโ€™s her.โ€

His gaze shot to mine, and then his expression slipped into a half-grin. โ€œThe Queen?โ€

โ€œMillicent,โ€ I said quietly.

He laughed again, another short burst of dry sound.

I sat back. โ€œMaybe Iโ€™ll ask the Blood Queen if she thinks youโ€™re here for her or for her Handmaiden.โ€

Slowly, Malik leaned across the small space between us. โ€œAsk her that,โ€โ€”that lone dimple appearedโ€”โ€œand I will wrap you in the bones of a deity and throw you into the godsdamn Stroud Sea.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a bit of an excessive threat,โ€ I replied, as satisfaction surged through me. Itย wasย excessive. Which left very little reason as to why. He had to care. โ€œItโ€™s the kind of reaction Iโ€™d have if you threatened Casteel.โ€

Malik looked at me.

I smiled. โ€œExcept mine wouldnโ€™t involve deity bones or the sea. Nor would it be an empty threat.โ€

He finished off his drink. โ€œNoted.โ€ His gaze flicked to the floor. โ€œShe comes.โ€

The Blood Queen approached. Malik rose. I didnโ€™t. Murmurs drifted from the floor as I stared up at her. Isbethโ€™s features sharpened as she swept past me and lowered herself onto the chair on my other side. Only then did Malik sit. Dozens of eyes watched as Millicent remained in front of us, joined by the other Handmaidens. Their straight backs provided a rather impressive screen of privacy.

Someone handed the Blood Queen a glass of bubbling wine. She waited until the servant disappeared into the shadows before saying, โ€œWeโ€™re being watched, and they find your lack of respect toward a Queenโ€”your behavior

โ€”to be disgraceful.โ€

โ€œAnd if they knew the truth about you? About the things youโ€™ve done?โ€ I asked, watching a young couple speak as they gazed up at the statue of what I had always assumed was Nyktos but apparently wasnโ€™t.

โ€œI doubt that it would change much for most in this room,โ€ she noted. โ€œBut we know what theyโ€™d do if they learned who you are.โ€

โ€œA god and not a Harbinger.โ€

โ€œOne and the same to many,โ€ she murmured.

I stiffened. โ€œPerhaps, but I am willing to prove to them that they have nothing to fear from me.โ€

โ€œAnd how will you do that?โ€

โ€œWell, I could start with not taking their children and using them as cattle,โ€ I replied.

โ€œWas Tawny used as cattle?โ€ She gestured at the crowd with a jeweled hand. โ€œOr any number of the Lords and Ladies in Wait in attendance tonight?โ€

โ€œNo, they will just be turned into creatures who will then prey upon others with little remorse.โ€

Her dark gaze slid to mine. โ€œOr they will cull the weak from the masses.โ€

My lip curled. โ€œYou really believe that?โ€ โ€œI know that.โ€ She took a drink.

It took a lot to stop myself from knocking the crystal glass from her hand. โ€œAnd the children taken during the last Rite? The ones that were hung beneath Redrock?โ€

โ€œServing the gods.โ€

โ€œLies,โ€ I hissed. โ€œAnd I cannot wait to see your face when all of those lies are exposed.โ€

She grinned as she looked out over the floor. โ€œDo you think that I will allow your armies to lay siege to the capital like I have the other cities? Cities I donโ€™t even consider a loss?โ€ She turned her head to me. โ€œBecause theyโ€™re not a loss. But what has happened in those cities will not occur here. If your armies arrive at the Rise, I will line those walls and gates with newborns. And whatever draken you have left, whatever armies still stand, will have to burn and cut through them.โ€

I could only stare as I slowly realized that she was serious. My fingers dug into the arms of the chair as the Primal essence throbbed deeply within me. A faint tremor ran through me as I stared at the statue, but I only saw those mortals on Oak Amblerโ€™s gates and the ones beneath Redrock. Beside me, Malik stretched forward as Millicent turned slightly. The couple standing before the statue frowned as they looked down to where the freshly dropped night-blooming rose petalsโ€ฆvibrated.

That was me.

My anger.

I was doing that.

Briefly closing my eyes, I reined in my emotions, and it was a lot like all those times Iโ€™d worn the veil and had been brought before Duke Teerman. When I had to just stand there and take whatever he dealt. It was also a lot like closing off my senses to others. Instead, I closed myself off

fromย myย emotions. Only when the eather had calmed in my chest did I reopen my eyes. The petals had settled on the floor.

โ€œSmart,โ€ the Blood Queen whispered as Malik relaxed. โ€œI see you have learned to control that power to some extent.โ€

I forced my grip to loosen on the chair arms. โ€œIs that what you wanted to talk to me about? How you will slaughter more children and innocent people?โ€

โ€œIt will not be I who slaughters those mortals,โ€ she stated. โ€œIt will be the armies under your command who do.โ€ Her stare was intense. I felt it tracking over every inch of my face. โ€œOr it will simply be you who does it. So, if you want to avoid that, you will make sure your armies stand down.โ€

I cut my gaze in her direction. โ€œNow weโ€™re going to discuss the future of the kingdoms? Do you think I will negotiate with you when this is how you plan to proceed?โ€ The words came out of me in a rush. โ€œI wonโ€™t give you Atlantia. I wonโ€™t order my armies to retreat. And I wonโ€™t let you use innocent people as a shield.โ€

Her attention shifted to the Prince. โ€œMalik, if you donโ€™t mind, I need to speak with my daughter in private.โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€ Malik rose, bowing as his eyes briefly met mine. He walked down the short set of wide steps, passing Millicent as he strolled onto the floor and was immediately swamped by smiling Ladies and Lords.

โ€œThey are so very charmed by him,โ€ the Blood Queen said. โ€œHeโ€™d have to beat them off with a stick if he wanted to.โ€

The Handmaiden looked away from Malik, her attention traveling farther across the Great Hall.

โ€œDo you know what has kept me alive?โ€ she asked after a couple of moments. โ€œVengeance.โ€

โ€œThat isโ€ฆentirely clichรฉ,โ€ I remarked.

Her laugh was soft and short. โ€œBe that as it may, it is the truth. And I imagine the reason itโ€™s become so clichรฉ is because vengeance has kept many alive during the darkest moments of their lives. Moments that last years and decades. I will have it.โ€

โ€œThe vast majority of Atlantians had nothing to do with what was done to you or your son,โ€ I told her. โ€œAnd yet, you think that controlling Atlantia will somehow give you that vengeance. It wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I must admit something to you.โ€ The Blood Queen angled her body toward mine. The scent of roses reached me. โ€œI never really had any

intention of ruling Atlantia. I donโ€™t need the kingdom. I donโ€™t even want it. I just want to see it burn. Ended. I want to see every Atlantian dead.โ€

Casteel

She will die in your armsโ€ฆ

Millicentโ€™s words kept cycling through my head. I hadnโ€™t slept since sheโ€™d been here. I couldnโ€™t stop thinking about who she wasโ€”what sheโ€™d shared. I couldnโ€™t deny that she was Poppyโ€™s sister. They looked too much alike. Hell, if the hair was the same color and Millicent had fewer freckles, they couldย almostย pass as twins. And what she had said about Poppy? What sheโ€™d said I needed to do?

I growled low in my throat. Fuck that.

Even if Poppy were powerful enough to wreak the kind of havoc Millicent had warned of, she would never do it. That kind of evil wasnโ€™t in her.

Millicent might be Poppyโ€™s sister, but I didnโ€™t trust her. And I didnโ€™t trust a damn thing that had come out of her mouth.

Footsteps echoed from in the hall, jerking my head up. Golden Boy entered. Alone. He carried no food or water with him.

โ€œWhat in the hell do you want?โ€ I snarled, my throat dry. โ€œI wanted to see how you were doing, Your Majesty.โ€

โ€œBullshit.โ€

He smiled, his facial paint and clothing so damn golden that he shone like a bulb of light. โ€œYouโ€™re starting to lookโ€ฆnot so well again.โ€

I didnโ€™t need this jackass pointing out what I already knew. Hunger gnawed at my insides, and I swore I saw his pulse thrumming in his neck.

But the Rev just stood there, staring.

โ€œUnless youโ€™re here to tell me about the weather,โ€ I drawled, โ€œyou can show yourself the fuck out.โ€

Callum chuckled. โ€œImpressive.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ I smirked. โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œYour arrogance,โ€ he said, and a low rumble radiated from my chest as he stepped forward. His smile widened. โ€œYouโ€™re chained to a wall, starved and filthy, unable to do anything to aid your woman, and yet youโ€™re still so arrogant.โ€

Another growl clawed its way up my throat. โ€œShe doesnโ€™t need my aid.โ€ โ€œI suppose not.โ€ He touched his chest. โ€œShe stabbed me yesterday. With

my own dagger.โ€

A rough laugh left me. โ€œThatโ€™s my girl.โ€

โ€œYou must be very proud of her.โ€ He knelt slowly. โ€œWeโ€™ll see how that changes.โ€

โ€œItโ€™ll never change,โ€ I swore, my jaw throbbing. โ€œNo matter what.โ€

He studied me for a few moments. โ€œLove. Such a strange emotion. Iโ€™ve seen it take the most powerful beings down,โ€ he said. Millicentโ€™s words knocked around in my head again. โ€œIโ€™ve seen it give others unbelievable strength. But out of all the many, many years Iโ€™ve lived, Iโ€™ve only seen love stop death once.โ€

โ€œIs that so?โ€

Callum nodded. โ€œNyktos and his Consort.โ€ I stared at him. โ€œYouโ€™re that old?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m old enough to remember the way things used to be. Old enough to know when love is a strength or a weakness.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t really care.โ€

โ€œYou should. Because itโ€™s a weakness for you.โ€ Those pale, unblinking eyes were unsettling as hell. โ€œYou know how?โ€

My lips peeled back. โ€œI bet youโ€™re going to tell me.โ€

โ€œYou shouldโ€™ve fed from her when you had the chance,โ€ he said. โ€œYouโ€™re going to regret not doing that.โ€

โ€œWrong.โ€ Iโ€™d never regret not jeopardizing Poppyโ€™s safety. Never.

โ€œWeโ€™ll see about that, too.โ€ The Rev held my stare for a long moment and then moved.

He was quick. I jerked back at the sight of a glint of steel. There was nowhere to go. My reflexes were shitโ€”

Pain exploded in my chest, taking with it the air in my lungs in a fiery wave. A metallic taste immediately filled my mouth. I looked down to see a dagger deep in the center of my chest and red everywhere, coursing down my stomach.

I lifted my head, biting out, โ€œMissed my heart, dumbass.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ The Rev smiled, yanking the dagger free. I grunted. โ€œTell me, Your Majesty. What happens to an Atlantian when thereโ€™s no more blood coursing through their veins?โ€

The wound felt like it was on fire, but my insides were drenched in ice. My heart gave a sluggish lurch. Bloodlust. Complete and absolute. Thatโ€™s what happened.

โ€œI hear it makes one as monstrous as a Craven.โ€ Rising, he lifted the dagger to his mouth and ran his tongue along the blood-soaked blade. โ€œGood luck.โ€
