TEARS.

I couldnโ€™t stop them from falling.

It was ridiculous because Iโ€™d always thought of myself as a strong girl, but lately, all I seemed to do was cry.

And lie.

Oh yeah, I seemed to be doing a whole heap of lying these days.

When I arrived at the maternity hospital earlier, Iโ€™d lied through my teeth and told the admissions nurse in the A&E that a car had backed into mine and I needed to get checked out.

I mean, seriously?

Too worked up to think straight, Iโ€™d sat in the waiting room all alone bawling my eyes out while I waited to be called in for an ultrasound. The one that assured me what Joey had; everything was fine with the baby.

Knowing that I couldnโ€™t go home in my current state, I somehow made it to Caseyโ€™s flat feeling overwhelmed with regret and disappointment in myself. The minute she opened the flat door, I barreled into my best friendโ€™s arms, crying hard and ugly. โ€œThey arrested him.โ€

The text message Iโ€™d received from Shannon had confirmed it.

โ€œOh shit, what did he do this time?โ€ Casey spluttered in surprise, wrapping her arms around me and pulling me inside. โ€œWait โ€“we are talking about Joey here, arenโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œYeah, Case,โ€ I choked out, chest heaving. โ€œObviously.โ€

โ€œObviously,โ€ she agreed, walking us over to the couch. โ€œOkay, you sit and start explaining, and Iโ€™ll boil the kettle.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want you to make tea,โ€ I cried, dropping my head in my hands. โ€œI want you to help me get him out.โ€

โ€œOf jail?โ€ Her brows shot up. โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, but I canโ€™t just leave him there.โ€

โ€œHow about you explain why heโ€™s there in the first place and then we can make a plan.โ€

Sucking in a shuddering breath, word for word I delved right into the dayโ€™s events at Tommen, leaving no stone unturned.

โ€œCome on, Aoif, this is Joey weโ€™re talking about,โ€ Casey tried to coax once I was finished regaling her with my tale of woe. โ€œHeโ€™s like a cat with nine lives. Heโ€™ll get a slap on the wrist and be out in no time.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Sniffling, I shook my head. โ€œYou donโ€™t get it. Heโ€™s over eighteen now.โ€

โ€œShit, youโ€™re right,โ€ my best friend agreed, flopping down on the couch beside me. โ€œThe Gards in this town have been dreaming about this day. Theyโ€™re going to throw the book at him.โ€

โ€œNot helping.โ€

โ€œYeah, sorry, I just heard myself out loud.โ€ Slapping her forehead, she twisted sideways on the couch and offered me a supportive hug. โ€Listen, I know itโ€™s really fucking scary, but you need to listen to what Joe said.โ€ She squeezed me tighter. โ€œYou need to look after that baby.โ€

โ€œAnd whoโ€™s going to look afterย Joey?โ€
