Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

JOEY

“MOLLOY, WAIT UP!”ย Pushing off the wall outside the GP surgery, the one Iโ€™d been waiting against for the past twenty-minutes, I hurried after her. “Wait up, will ya?”

“Can’t,” she called over her shoulder โ€“ her rigid shoulder โ€“ as she pulled up the hood of her raincoat, gave a quick glance left and right and crossed the road. โ€œIโ€™m late for school.โ€

Yeah, we were both late for school, but I was the asshole late for her appointment.

Swallowing down my self-loathing, I clenched my jaw and jogged after her. “How did it go?” I asked, falling into step beside her when I reached the footpath. “Is everything okay with the, uhโ€ฆโ€ Shoving my hands into the front pocket of my hoodie, I concentrated on the footpath as I spoke. “Are you okay?”

“Am I okay?” She stopped dead in her tracks and let out a humorless laugh. “Am I okay?” she repeated, swinging around to glare at me. “Hmm, let’s see, I’ve just spent the last hour being lectured by a doctor whoโ€™s known me since childhood about the dangers Iโ€™ve been exposed to, because unlike

the pregnant women waiting with their husbands and partners for good news, I’m the fool at risk.”

“Risk?” Panic roared to life inside of me. “For what?”

“I’m at risk,” she hissed, “because I was the fucking eejit who laid on her back for an intravenous drug user who can’t remember his own bloody name half the time! A little fucking humiliating, donโ€™t you think, Joe?” she demanded, tears filling her eyes. “To beย thatย girl.” She narrowed her eyes. “To be the girlfriend ofย thatย guy.”

It took me a while to register her words.

The fog in my head made it so fucking hard to focus.

But once I did, my heart cracked in my chest. โ€œJesus Christ,โ€ I strangled out. โ€œI didnโ€™t give you anything, did I?โ€ Panicked, I choked out, โ€œIโ€™ve never cheated on you.โ€

โ€œI know, Joe.โ€ Sniffling, she shook her head. โ€œMy test results are all clean.โ€

Relief flooded my body. โ€œIโ€™m so fucking sorry.โ€

“Yeah, well, I guess I should say thanks for showing up,” she deadpanned, turning on her heels. “Better late than never, huh?โ€

โ€œI overslept.โ€

โ€œUh-huh. I bet whatever you took knocked you out hard.โ€

โ€œAoife, Iโ€™m sorry!โ€ I called after when she stormed off. โ€œI can do this. I can take care of you and the babyโ€”โ€

โ€œYou can’t even take care of yourself!โ€ She pulled her hood back up when the wind knocked it down. โ€œYouโ€™re sick, Joe. Youโ€™re so sick and you canโ€™t even see it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sick,โ€ I argued, hurrying after her. โ€œIโ€™m just going through some shit right now.โ€

โ€œYou are aย drug addict,โ€ she cried out hoarsely, as she swung around to glare at me. โ€œYou are killing yourself and you are killing me!โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I shook my head, desperately refuting her words. โ€œItโ€™s going to be okay.โ€

โ€œLook at whatโ€™s happening to your life!โ€ she all but screamed. โ€œYouโ€™ve been kicked off the hurling team. Youโ€™re failing at school. Youโ€™re constantly off your head. Youโ€™ve lost yourself, Joe. You promised me that youโ€™d stay, but youโ€™re notย hereย anymore. I bet you donโ€™t even know what day it is.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s Thursday,โ€ I choked out, trembling. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t give a fuck about school or the hurling team.โ€

โ€œWhat about me?โ€ she sobbed. โ€œWhat about our baby? Do you care about us?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re all I care about,โ€ I snapped, pushing my hair back. โ€œFuck, youโ€™re all Iโ€™ve ever cared about, Molloy. You know that.โ€

โ€œThenย fight, Joey Lynch,โ€ she begged, fisting her hand in the front of my school jumper. โ€œFight this.โ€

โ€œI am.โ€

โ€œLiar.โ€ She accused, tears spilling down her cheeks. โ€œYouโ€™ve thrown in the towel. Youโ€™ve given the hell up and we both know it.โ€

“What do you want me to do?” I shot back, struggling to rein in my temper. “Jesus fucking Christ, Molloy, I am doing everything that’s been asked of me. Fucking everything!โ€

โ€œThe only thing Iโ€™m asking you to do is the one thing you point blank refuse to do,โ€ she argued hotly. โ€œGet clean.โ€

โ€œAoife โ€“โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t get it,โ€ she screamed. โ€œYou canโ€™t see how far youโ€™ve fallen, Joey. Iโ€™ve had to beg and borrow to get you out of trouble with Shane Holland and those monsters, and youย keepย going back to them! I owe Gibsie money. I owe Podge money. I owe Casey money and she doesnโ€™t even have it to spare. I am doing everything I can to keep you alive, but you just wonโ€™t help yourself!โ€

โ€œIโ€™mย fine,โ€ I bit out. โ€œItโ€™s all good.โ€ When she didnโ€™t respond, I gently tipped her chin upwards, forcing her to look at me. โ€œI love you.โ€

“I used to think that was true,โ€ she breathed, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. “But Iโ€™m beginning to think that you donโ€™t know what love means.โ€

โ€œMolloyโ€”โ€

“Look at my face, Joe,” she told me, and I did.ย Fuck, I did. “This is what hurting the person who loves you most in the world looks like.” She sniffled, tears dripping down her face, mirroring mine. “Remember this moment,” she added quietly. “Remember what I looked like the day you broke my heart.”
