Chapter no 32

Not in Love

LETโ€™S TRY TO MAKE IT RIGHT

RUE

And youโ€™reย reallyย sure that she admitted to it?โ€ Tisha asked forย what had to be the fourth time. Iโ€™d already replied to the first three, but still didnโ€™t blame her.ย Iย could scarcely believe it, and had gotten it straight from

the source. โ€œI am.โ€

โ€œAnd itโ€™s not some kind of . . . I donโ€™t know, a stroke. Or, I donโ€™t know how common folies ร  deux are these days, but maybe Florence and Eli are both in the throes of one? Maybe itโ€™s not quite the way Eli painted it? A misunderstanding, in which Florence is not nearly as gaslight-gatekeep- girlbossy as heโ€™s trying to make her out. Or the Harkness people could be biased and exaggerating their contribution to the tech. I mean, are youย reallyย sure that sheโ€”โ€

โ€œAdmitted to it?โ€ Diego shouted from Tishaโ€™s kitchenette. Then he came to lean against the doorjambโ€”a bare-chested, bespectacled, body-built nerd who couldnโ€™t have been more Tishaโ€™s type. Tisha had supposedly been working from home, but her short kimono clearly broadcast that they had been in the middle of something when I barged in. Diego had taken my uninvited appearance like a champ. โ€œRue, could you please tell Tisha whether youโ€™reย reallyย sure that Florence admitted to it?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d rather not.โ€

โ€œLet us know if you change your mind.โ€ โ€œNever.โ€

โ€œUnderstood.โ€

I hadnโ€™t liked a Tisha boyfriend this much in years, and hoped heโ€™d stick around. Even Bruce seemed to be a fan, rubbing himself against Diegoโ€™s calves while shooting me his repertoire of skeptical glances.

โ€œOkay, you two can stop being chummy and cahootsy against me.โ€

Diego and I exchanged one last cahootsy look before he disappeared into the bedroom. It was an immense relief, being with Tisha. Sharing the burden of todayโ€™s discovery. The last few hours had upended the last few years of my life, but Tisha was here, unchanged. Still standing as everything else crumbled down.

โ€œIf Florence admitted to doing that shitโ€”and yes, I know sheย hasโ€”well

. . .โ€ Tisha shrugged. โ€œListen, I love her. You love her. She did so much for us, and weโ€™re probably going to keep on loving her, even if she fucked up. At least weโ€™ll try. But this is not a small thing. This is someoneโ€™sย livelihood. This is someoneโ€™s hopes and dreams and entire career. We have to do something.โ€

โ€œI know. But what?โ€

She scratched her temple. โ€œWhat if it was your patent that Florence had stolen? What would you want Minami to do?โ€

My mouth was dry. โ€œI would want her to help me make it right. Even after ten years. Even if she wasnโ€™t the one responsible to begin with, I would want her to be on my side.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Tisha nodded. โ€œThen letโ€™s try to make it right.โ€

โ€œWe have no evidence. If UT swept it under the rug years agoโ€”โ€ โ€œReporting it wonโ€™t do anything.โ€ Tisha bit into her lower lip. โ€œIโ€™m not

sure what else, though. We might not be the best people to figure this out.โ€

An idea hit me. โ€œNo, we arenโ€™t.โ€ I let out a breathless laugh. โ€œBut you know who is?โ€
