Chapter no 23

Out on a Limb

Seventeen Weeks Pregnant. Baby is the size of a pear.

โ€œO

kay, buddy!โ€ I say, kneeling in the shallow end of the pool. โ€œNow I want you to ball your hand up in a fist.โ€ I help Henry fold up his

bigger hand. โ€œPerfect! Now weโ€™re going to swim as normal, okay? I just want to try something.โ€

Henry nods, presenting me two thumbs with both fists before he falls onto his tummy and starts swimming toward the far end of the pool. Cam hovers by the side of the pool, waiting for him there and shouting words of encouragement.

Henryโ€™s smaller hand is a lot like mine but with a slightly less-developed thumb. Itโ€™s on the opposite side of his body, too, so it takes some trial and error to find the right method for him.

But we do.

Forty minutes into his one hour of private swim, heโ€™s swimming straight and maybe evenย fasterย than he was before.

Because of me.

โ€œYou did an awesome job today, Henry!โ€ I say, kneeling next to the pool as he shakes water out of his floppy hair like a puppy, giggling.

โ€œI was so fast!โ€

โ€œYou were!โ€ I say, smiling up at Cam over his shoulder as he approaches. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m not bumping into the rope anymore. I went like an arrow!

Straight!โ€

โ€œLike an arrow, exactly.โ€ I squish my face together, smiling so hard I canโ€™t help it. โ€œGreat job, buddy.โ€

โ€œThank you, Winnie!โ€ He throws his arms around my neck. โ€œIโ€™m gonna be a swimmer like you,โ€ he says quietly before letting go.

I stand up, watching Henry walk toward the glass door where his parents are waiting for him. I wave to Cam and turn to walk toward the womenโ€™s changing rooms, but he stops me.

โ€œHey, wait. Come meet his parents. Theyโ€™re going to want to thank you.โ€ โ€œOh, no, I donโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œWin, cโ€™mon.โ€ Cam brings his hand up in the air, waving me toward them, in view of Henryโ€™s parents. Itโ€™d be rude not to now.

I follow behind, wrapping a towel around me as I do. Theyโ€™re bustling with excited conversation by the time I make my way over, and Henry is bursting with pride as his mom wraps him in a towel and a hug.

โ€œHi,โ€ I say, waving shyly. โ€œTonya, Jamesโ€”this is Win.โ€

โ€œWin is the best swimmer of all time!โ€ Henry shouts.

His parents laugh. โ€œWe saw that,โ€ Tonya says, smiling at me. โ€œThanks so much for coming. We could see how much confidence it gave him from all the way out here.โ€

โ€œAnd Cam says youโ€™re opening a camp?โ€ James asks.

โ€œOh, well, not really. Itโ€™s more of a dream at the moment. Weโ€™re starting to make plans. Next step is finding investors, and then we have to find property. Itโ€™s a big uphill climb, butโ€ฆsomeday,โ€ I say.

They immediately look disappointed.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Iโ€™d love to have Henry atย anyย camp. Maybe in a few years, huh, buddy?โ€

Henry nods, hitting me with a beaming smile with missing teeth and a wrinkled nose.

His dad, James, clears his throat. โ€œI, uh, I donโ€™t normally do this, butโ€ฆโ€ He pulls out his wallet and hands me a business card. โ€œIf youโ€™re looking for investors, please get in touch.โ€ I take the card hesitantly. โ€œWeโ€™ve seen what you can do in an hour, and Iโ€™m impressed. Other kids should get that chance.โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€”โ€ I almost dismiss myself. I nearly tell them every way in which Iโ€™m unqualified, unprofessional, incapable. I even, almost, hand back the business card. But I donโ€™t. I stop myself.

Maybe itโ€™s because of the hope on their faces and the smile still stuck on Henryโ€™s.

Maybe itโ€™s because of Bo, telling me how capable I am. Howย possible

this is.

Mostly, I think, itโ€™s because of me. Because of how much stronger I feel lately.

I let myself feel proud of everything I did with Henry today, the years of schooling that prepared me for this, the life Iโ€™ve lived with my hand and the experiences Iโ€™ve gathered just by having it. And I hold my head high.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I say. โ€œIโ€™ll definitely be in touch. Thank you,โ€ I add again

โ€”because I canโ€™t resist. โ€œIt was great to meet you, buddy. Youโ€™re going to

do great with Mr. Cam, here.โ€

โ€œThanks again,โ€ Tonya says as they usher Henry toward the changing rooms.

Cam shuts the door and then smiles at me withย I told you soย eyes.

I look at the business card in my hand and take a deep inhale.ย James Burrough, President of Burrough Financial Holdings.

โ€œWin, I think youโ€™re getting your camp.โ€

โ€œI mean, he could easily change his mind. I still have to make a proposal and findโ€”โ€ I stop myselfย again. Sometimesโ€ฆ things are just good things.ย I could spend my whole life waiting for the other shoe to drop, or I could begin training myself to expect the best. Embrace gratitude and drop the scepticism. โ€œThisโ€ฆ this is very cool, isnโ€™t it? The chances of running into you here, meeting Henry and his parentsโ€ฆ Itโ€™sโ€ฆโ€

โ€œVery cool,โ€ Cam says, starting to lead the way to the changing rooms. โ€œYou said โ€˜weโ€™ before. Do you have a business partner orย someoneย else?โ€

โ€œDid I?โ€

โ€œYeah. You said, โ€˜weโ€™re starting to make plans,โ€™ when Tonya asked just now.โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€ฆโ€ I consider what Bo and I are to each other and decide to simplify it as best I can. โ€œMy roommate and me. Heโ€™s in finance and is helping me out.โ€

โ€œOh, okay,โ€ Cam says, his smile crooked and his eyes narrowed in on me.ย Uh-oh.ย I know that look. โ€œWould you maybe want to grab a drink, then? A late dinner?โ€

Yep,ย thereย it is.

I grimace, putting a hand on Camโ€™s shoulder and patting him just once before removing it. โ€œSo, funny story about my roommate. Actuallyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œGot it,โ€ Cam says, laughing under his breath. โ€œItโ€™s complicated, I take it?โ€

โ€œBeyond complicated.โ€

โ€œWant to grab a very platonic drink and talk about it, then?โ€

I laugh, looking up to the ceiling. โ€œSo, actually, I canโ€™t drink either.โ€ โ€œOh,โ€ Cam says, his eyes dropping down to my stomach.

โ€œYepโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThe roommateโ€™s?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I breathe out.

โ€œThatย isย complicated.โ€ He winces, smiling even still. โ€œIt is,โ€ I say.

โ€œSo no Westcliff this year?โ€ he asks.

I shake my head, frowning. โ€œNot this year.โ€ โ€œAh, well, weโ€™ll miss you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll miss it too.โ€

โ€œYou know, if you wanted to, I bet Henryโ€™s parents would rather have you teaching him. Iโ€™ve got a pretty full schedule already, and you could take over his lessons. Itโ€™s two hundred bucks a week after the pool rental.โ€

โ€œTwo hundred?โ€ I nearly yell. โ€œFor an hour?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m telling youโ€ฆโ€ Cam says, reaching down to grab his towel and flipping it over his shoulder. โ€œJames has gotย campย money.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d love that,โ€ I say. โ€œAre you sure?โ€

โ€œJust remember me when itโ€™s time to hire for that camp of yours,โ€ Cam says with a wink.

โ€œAbsolutely,โ€ I say, smiling back at him.

โ€œIโ€™ll text you the details, then,โ€ he says. โ€œSee you around, Win.โ€ โ€œThank you,โ€ I shout after him when he disappears from view.
