Chapter no 47 – OLIVIAโ€™S DAMN TIE

Consider Me (Playing For Keeps, #1)

CARTER

โ€œOH SHIT. FUCK. SHIT, SHIT, SHIT.โ€

I crack one sleepy lid and slam it closed the moment the sun tries to burn a hole right through my eyeball. โ€œBaby?โ€

Sweeping an arm over the mattress, I register the emptiness. Itโ€™s warm still, like she was here a moment ago, and I can still hear her, but where is she?

โ€œBabyyy,โ€ I call again, thick and hoarse. โ€œCome back to bed.โ€

Feet slap against tiles, and Oliviaโ€™s still spitting out all those curse words, which is oddly reminiscent of the way I woke on New Yearโ€™s Day.

โ€œStop it,โ€ I whine, rolling over, burying my face in the pillow. โ€œI donโ€™t like it. It reminds me of the morning you left me.โ€

โ€œCarter,โ€ she cries, and I hear the toilet seat slam. โ€œIโ€™m notโ€”โ€ Her words die with her heave, but I donโ€™t hear anything actually come out, and when I laugh, she starts screaming. โ€œAre you seriously fuckingโ€”โ€ย heave, โ€œโ€”laughing at meโ€”โ€ย double heave, โ€œโ€”right now?โ€

I flop onto my back, running a hand through my hair. My mouth is dry, my head is pounding, and while I feel like shit, I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever been so happy. โ€œYou gotta learn how to handle your alcohol better, Ollie girl.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m five foot one!โ€ she shrieks, then heaves. โ€œI drank as much as you did!โ€

โ€œRight. You could learn a thing or two from me.โ€ โ€œI hate you,โ€ she sobs into the toilet.

โ€œYou love the fuck out of me, princess.โ€

She doesnโ€™t grace me with a response. Instead the toilet seat slams again, and then the water cranks. Steam billows out of the bathroom, and I finally roll up to sitting.

Everything hurts. The sunshine is way too fucking bright and thereโ€™s a twenty-pound rock tumbling around in my brain, slamming against my skull with every minuscule movement. The time on my phone tells me itโ€™s only 7:37 a.m., and we didnโ€™t get home until after four, which means Iโ€™ve gotten something like three hours of sleep.

I bury my face in my hands and groan. Olivia and I are having the whole team over for lunch, families and friends, one shitshow that leads to another when we head downtown for dinner and drinks later tonight before a night out on the town with the boys.

โ€œOllieee,โ€ I groan, climbing to my feet. I scratch a hand over my torso and fist the base of my cock as I pad toward the running water in the bathroom. โ€œIโ€™m sore, baby. I might feel better if you sucked myโ€”โ€ I fold my lips into my mouth to stop that laughter thatโ€™s begging for release when I pull open the foggy glass door in search of my girlfriend.

I find Olivia curled up on the shower floor, knees pulled to her chest, soaked curls plastered to her face, down her back. Iโ€™m pretty sure sheโ€™s crying, based on the redness of her eyes, but itโ€™s difficult to be sure due to the water cascading from the showerhead.

โ€œOh, pumpkin. Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

Her wide brown eyes meet mine, and her mouth opens on a wail as I climb into the shower and take her in my arms.

โ€œI need chicken nuggets!โ€

โ€œOh fuck. Yeah, right there, baby. Harder.โ€

โ€œWhat the shit is going on in there?โ€ I hear Jeremy scream from the front hall. โ€œYou heard the front door open, right? You know Iโ€™m here?โ€

I lift my face off the living room rug. โ€œMaybe you should knock instead of just walking in!โ€

Olivia snickers, little heels digging into the muscles below my shoulder blades. I bury my face in the soft rug and let out a guttural, gravelly groan.

โ€œIโ€™m leaving! Weโ€™re leaving! Jem,ย no! Come back!ย Shield your eyes, little buddy!โ€

Little Jem comes toddling in on his chubby legs. Heโ€™s recently picked up walking, though he mostly moves around like a tiny, drunk adult. Itโ€™s

hilarious and cute as hell. His face lights up when he spots his aunt perched on my back and he breaks into a super-wobbly run, diving straight for my ass, which he hugs to his face.

Olivia giggles and hops off my back as her brother cautiously enters the living room. โ€œHi, Jemmy,โ€ she coos, scooping her nephew off me.

She pulls up his Vipers tee and smooches his belly before dropping him on my chest when I roll onto my back. He gives me a sloppy kiss before I toss him into the air and catch him in my arms. He smells so good, like fresh baby and coconut sunscreen.

Jeremy is shielding his eyes, which means he bangs his shin off the edge of the coffee table and keels over with a string of curses. Naturally, Alannah bursts through the front door at this moment, declaring he owes her five bucks.

When his gaze finds us, Jeremy sighs. โ€œOh thank God. Youโ€™re dressed.โ€ โ€œI was walking on his back.โ€ Olivia flicks his elbow before they hug

each other.

He eyes me suspiciously. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œOh, I donno.โ€ I climb to my feet with Jem in my arms. โ€œMaybe โ€™cause I kicked some serious freaking ass last night and won the Stanley Cup.โ€ Iโ€™m learning how not to swear around kids. Itโ€™s only sometimes successful.

โ€œYeah, you did!โ€ Alannah shrieks, dashing into the room. I catch her around the waist with one arm when she leaps at me. I fucking love these kids. โ€œThat was the best game ever, Carter. I cried! Really, I did!โ€

โ€œReally, she did,โ€ Jeremy repeats with another long exhale. โ€œShe was hysterical.โ€

Alannah scowls as she slides down my body. โ€œYou cried like a baby, Daddy.โ€

โ€œDid not.โ€ I might believe him if it werenโ€™t for the look on his face as his gaze slides across the living room, settling on the shiny cup sitting on the kitchen table. His shaky hands fly to his face. โ€œOh. My. God. Itโ€™s theโ€ฆ itโ€™s theโ€ฆโ€ He whimpers, and I absolutely smirk.

I plop Jem in the cup and he giggles, smacking his hands down on it. โ€œOh my God!โ€ Kristin enters the living room at a walk, but skids into

the kitchen at a run. โ€œPicture! I need a picture!โ€ She throws one arm around me, pulling me close as she fishes her phone out of her purse. โ€œCongratulations, Carter. You were fantastic. You deserve it.โ€ She snaps her

fingers at Jem, trying to get his attention. โ€œLook at Mommy, Jemmy! Can you say cup? Cup! Cup, Jemmy!โ€

Heโ€™s for damn sure not saying cup, just babbling along, but he looks happy as hell, smiling up at her for all three hundred photos she seems to take in fifteen seconds.

Jem peers up at me with sparkling blue eyes, reaching his tiny hands out. โ€œCah-Cah.โ€

Kristin claps a hand to her mouth. โ€œOh. He said your name.โ€ โ€œHe did not,โ€ Jeremy grumbles, reaching for Jem.

Jem frowns and grunts, wiggling out of his dadโ€™s reach, making grabby hands at me. โ€œCah-Cah!โ€

I might try to wipe the shit-eating grin off my face if I could, but it doesnโ€™t seem that I can. I pick up Jem, smooshing my cheek against his as I stare his dad right in the eyes. โ€œHe definitely said my name. Guess thatโ€™s one more thing I win at in this life, Jeremy, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Jeremy slaps a ten-dollar bill down in Alannahโ€™s hand before he opens his mouth and unleashes that famous Parker Family fury.

โ€œCarter.โ€ Oliviaโ€™s head flops onto my shoulder as she whimpers. โ€œIโ€™m not sure I can make it through the rest of dinner. I need to go to bed.โ€

Her eyes are doing that dazed, glossy thing, tracking every movement slowly. Sheโ€™s also got that drunk perma-grin slapped on her face, and her cheeks have been pink for most of the day. I feel like I need to take her home and put her to bed, but I sure as shit canโ€™t drive, so Iโ€™m trusting my driver to take Olivia and Cara and a few of the other girls home tonight.

Weโ€™ve been drinking since noon, and though we all look fancy as hell, taking up over half of this upscale restaurant, most of us are well on the way to incoherent, some of us somehow thriving on absolutely zero sleep. Olivia is not one of those thriving folks.

I press my lips to her hair. It smells so good, like banana bread, and instead of the fluffy curls that normally hang down her back, itโ€™s sleek and pin straight, nearly touching the dip in her back. I wanna take her into the bathroom, wrap that dark hair around my fist, shove her over the sink, and

fuck her until everyone in this restaurant knows what she sounds like when she comes around my cock.

โ€œBut I gave you nuggets.โ€ My lips touch her ear. โ€œAnd shower orgasms.โ€

Her lower lip slides between her teeth. โ€œThreeย shower orgasms.โ€

Winding my arm around her waist, I yank her closer. In addition to banana bread, she smells like beer and the tequila shots Cara keeps shit- talking her into taking. Sheโ€™s so easily goaded itโ€™s not funny.

No, wait. Itโ€™s funny as fuck.

โ€œYou want me to ditch these assholes and take you home so I can fuck you in every room of our house?โ€

The lawyer stopped by this morning, post-orgasms, to collect Oliviaโ€™s keys, and tomorrow the new owner moves in. That makes her officially mine, and my house hers. So, our house.

Her fingers walk slowly up my tie. โ€œToo many rooms.โ€

โ€œSounds like a challenge to me. And you know how I feel about challenges.โ€

Olivia drags her tongue across her bottom lip as she winds the black silk around her fist and lifts one suggestive brow. โ€œI like this tie, Mr. Beckett.โ€

My sword of thunder leaps to attention in my pants. โ€œYou do, do you? Letโ€™s go home so I can show you what else I like to use it for.โ€ I slap my hand over hers when it creeps under the table and lands on my bulge. โ€œKeep it up and Iโ€™ll tie these grabby hands up too.โ€

โ€œWhat the fuck are you two doing over there?โ€ Cara slams another tequila shot down in front of Olivia before she sinks to the seat across from her.

Adam sighs, shoving his fingers through his hair. โ€œMaking me feel super single.โ€

โ€œAgreed.โ€ Garrett gestures to where our hands disappear. โ€œThereโ€™s a fuckload of hands where we canโ€™t see.โ€

โ€œGare-Bear.โ€ Cara pushes his blond hair back. โ€œYou won the Stanley Cup last night. When us girls leave, youโ€™re probably gonna have six different hands in your lap.โ€

His face floods with heat and he swats her hand away. โ€œItโ€™s a guysโ€™ night.โ€

Cara snorts. โ€œYeah, okay.โ€ She lifts her shot glass along. โ€œCome on, Livvie.โ€

Olivia raises hers to her mouth, takes a whiff, and does a whole-body shudder. โ€œNope. Not gonna happen. Iโ€™m officially done.โ€ Done with alcohol, at least, because her entire face lights up when the waitress drops a plate of steak and lobster in front of her. โ€œOh, baby. Come to mama.โ€

When dinnerโ€™s done, I escape to the bathroom before the girls head out so I can sneak in a couple extra moments, a few extra kisses before I load Olivia in the back of the car.

Itโ€™s one of those new bathrooms for guys and girls. I like that they did that. Theyโ€™re so much nicer now, with soft hand towels and foaming soap that smells like fresh cookies and makes my skin feel like silk.

My phone dings in my pocket. Itโ€™s my sister with a picture of Dublin sleeping on his back, paws in the air, tongue out. Next to him is my mom, also passed out. Theyโ€™re on the living room floor at my momโ€™s, which seems reasonable. Who needs a couch when you have a perfectly good floor?

Chuckling, I click the screen off and set it down on the counter before I move to the toilet and relieve myself with a sigh. Iโ€™m washing my hands for the second time โ€™cause the soap smells so good when the door handle jiggles.

โ€œJust a sec,โ€ I call, drying my hands.

โ€œAll the bathrooms are full,โ€ a feminine voice cries out. โ€œPlease, itโ€™s an emergency.โ€

I open the door and a blonde falls into me, one hand on my chest. Sheโ€™s got her other fist wrapped tightly around a tampon, so I get the hell out of the way, something my dad taught me when my sister turned thirteen. Thank God, because itโ€™s proven to be extremely useful with Olivia. I donโ€™t know if you know this, but that girl sometimes has a big attitude, despite her tiny doll-like size.

When I find the girls in the lobby, Cara says Jasonโ€™s already out front with the limo. She skips out the door, arms looped through a couple of the other girlsโ€™ like some sort of impenetrable chain. I squeeze Olivia into me, whimpering like the whipped bastard I am.

โ€œCarter, you donโ€™t have to feel bad about spending a night away from me. We have all summer to get sick of each other.โ€

โ€œThe rest of our lives, you mean.โ€ I bury my words in her neck. โ€œI have the rest of my life to annoy and love the shit outta you, and you have the rest of your life to put up with me.โ€

โ€œMmm. Youโ€™re lucky I tolerate you so well.โ€ โ€œSo lucky.โ€

Olivia presses up on her toes, kissing my cheek. โ€œJust gotta run to the bathroom.โ€

I smile at the way she dances off to the bathroom, but outwardly groan at the tall blonde who starts sauntering over to me the second Olivia disappears. Itโ€™s the same one who burst through the bathroom door a few minutes ago. She looks a hell of a lot more composed than she did then, and I find myself thinking the tampon emergency was maybe a ruse.

โ€œEvery fucking time,โ€ I mumble to myself. โ€œI swear.โ€

โ€œPardon?โ€ She stops in front of me, running her tongue along her teeth as she looks me over. Tampon ruse, definitely.

I sigh, shaking my hair out. โ€œI was saying to myself that this always happens every time my girlfriend goes to the bathroom.โ€

โ€œWell, maybe she shouldnโ€™t leave a man as handsome as yourself standing here all alone.โ€ She steps into me, reaching forward to play with my tie, and I hit her with some sort of pseudoโ€“judo chop before I step back.

Thatโ€™s Oliviaโ€™s damn tie.

โ€œIs she leaving?โ€

Seriously, why is she still talking to me? And where is Olivia? Sheโ€™s not allowed to go to the bathroom in public places anymore.

โ€œMaybe we can go somewhere private to talk when sheโ€™s gone.โ€

Iโ€™m about to tell her to fuck off when Olivia swings around her and tucks herself into my side.

โ€œHeโ€™s good, but thanks for the offer.โ€ Her smile is all fake sugar. I love it. โ€œIf you hope to ever be happy in a relationship, I suggest you start with quitting whatever the hell this is, going after men who are happily taken. Itโ€™s not working for you, is it?โ€ She looks up at me. โ€œCarter, do you want to go somewhere private to talk with her?โ€

โ€œFuck no.โ€

โ€œAnd why not, baby?โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™ve already got the only woman Iโ€™ll ever need.โ€

She smiles up at me, hand curving around my neck as she brings my mouth to hers. โ€œDoes that answer your question?โ€ she asks Blondie, but doesnโ€™t give her the chance to reply. Instead, her fingers twine with mine and she tugs me toward the door.

I donโ€™t think itโ€™s possible to be more shocked than I already am, but then she pushes me up against the brick of the building on the sidewalk and yanks my face down to hers. Her tongue is commanding, her touch possessive, and I eat up every single second of it.

The window of the waiting limo rolls down and Cara pops her head out. โ€œLetโ€™s fucking go, Livvie-pie! Jay-Jayโ€™s gonna take us through the McDickโ€™s drive-thru! Fries and McFlurries, baby!โ€

Olivia pulls away, breathless, and swipes her hair off her forehead. โ€œHave fun, be safe, and I love you.โ€ She kisses me once more, gives my dick a loving pat through my pants, and then disappears inside the limo.

Iโ€™m in a daze by the time I wander back inside the lobby, half-drunk but mostly just happy as a pig in shit. I canโ€™t wait to make that woman my fiancรฉe, and then my wife.

โ€œSheโ€™s annoyingly possessive.โ€

I spin around, finding the blonde leaning against the bar. She picks up her wine glass, swirling the red liquid, and steps forward.

โ€œCan we talk now that weโ€™re alone?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a fuck no. You heard my girlfriend.โ€ I turn with every intention of walking away.

โ€œI might be able to change your mind,โ€ she purrs quietly.

โ€œYou canโ€™t, actually. Nobody will change my mind about that girl. Iโ€™d never do anything to hurt her.โ€

โ€œAre you sure about that, Carter?โ€ comes a familiar voice from behind

me.

Slowly, I twist. My stomach drops when my gaze lands on the redhead

smirking at me. โ€œWhat the fuck are you doing here, Courtney? Adam doesnโ€™t want to see you.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a free country. I can go wherever I like.โ€ Courtney shrugs, then pulls something from the purse hanging off her shoulder. โ€œThink you misplaced this at some point tonight.โ€

My eyes fall to the sleek black object she spins in her hand before presenting to me on her open palm.

โ€œWhat kind of a friend would I be if I didnโ€™t return something so valuable, Carter?โ€
