Chapter no 40

All In (The Naturals, #3)

โ€ŒDean opened the door. Aaron stepped in, eyed Deanโ€™s knife, and let the door shut behind him.โ€Œ

โ€œI appreciate that someoneโ€™s watching out for Sloane,โ€ Aaron told Dean. โ€œBut I also feel compelled to point out that a knife like that wouldnโ€™t do much good if the person on the other side of this door had a gun.โ€

All that glitters is not gold,ย I thought, taking in the warning embedded in Aaronโ€™s words.ย Youโ€™re used to the people around you being armed. The world you grew up in is a dangerous, glittering place.

Dean gave Sloaneโ€™s brother a dead-eyed stare. โ€œYou might be surprised.โ€

Aaron must have seen something there that sent a chill down his spine. โ€œIโ€™m not armed,โ€ he assured Dean, โ€œand Iโ€™m not here to hurt anyone. You can trust me.โ€

โ€œNot an incredibly trusting fellow, Dean,โ€ Michael said lightly. โ€œMust come from being raised by a psychotic serial killer with a fondness for knives.โ€ He gave Aaron a steely smile. โ€œDo come in.โ€

Aaronโ€™s eyes sought out Lia. โ€œYouโ€™re the one who can detect lies?โ€ he asked.

โ€œWho?โ€ Lia said. โ€œMe?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not armed,โ€ Aaron said again, staring her straight in the eye. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m not here to hurt anyone.โ€

Without another word, he took a seat in the living room. Dean sat opposite him. I stayed standing.

โ€œAs you are doubtlessly aware,โ€ Aaron started, โ€œBeau Donovan and I got into an altercation last night.โ€

The debacle backstage at Toryโ€™s show seemed like a lifetime agoโ€”and given what weโ€™d learned since then, almost painfully insignificant.

โ€œYou brought another girl to Toryโ€™s show.โ€ Sloane didnโ€™t look at Aaron as she spoke. She stared at the window behind himโ€”at her map and her calculations and the Fibonacci spiral. โ€œBeau considers Tory his sister. I suspect a nontrivial percentage of his demographic would have reacted similarly, under such circumstances.โ€ Then, as if that werenโ€™t clear enough, Sloane elaborated. โ€œAccording to my calculations, there was a ninety- seven-point-six percent chance you deserved to be punched in the nose.โ€

Aaronโ€™s lips tilted upward slightly. โ€œI heard you were good with numbers.โ€

I couldnโ€™t detect even a hint of criticism in Aaronโ€™s tone. From Michaelโ€™s expression, I didnโ€™t think he caught any, either. My mind went to Sloane saying that she wanted Aaron to like her.

I studied Aaron.ย You do like her. You want to know her.

โ€œHow about we focus on this mythicalย thingย you need us to give to the FBI?โ€ Lia came and sat on the arm of Deanโ€™s chair. She didnโ€™t like strangers, and she didnโ€™t trust themโ€”especially not with Sloane.

Aaron reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a clear case. Inside, there was a DVD. โ€œSecurity footage,โ€ he said. โ€œTaken from a pawn shop across the street from where Victor McKinney was attacked.โ€

Liaโ€™s silence seemed to confirm that the DVD was what Aaron had said it was.

โ€œVictor was our head of security,โ€ Aaron continued. โ€œFrom his perspectiveโ€”and my fatherโ€™sโ€”Beau Donovan was a security risk.โ€

Beau had attacked Aaron. He hadnโ€™t done any damage, but to a man like Grayson Shaw, I doubted that mattered. If Sloaneโ€™s father viewed Sloane as little more than an inconvenient possession, his legitimate son would be viewed not just as property, but as an extension of himself.

Iโ€™d seen that dynamic beforeโ€”with Deanโ€™s father.

โ€œIf youโ€™ll play the footage, youโ€™ll see that Victor was the one who followed Beau, not the other way around. Victor was the one who slammed

Beau against a wall. And Victor,โ€ Aaron made himself finish, โ€œis the one who pulled a gun and put it to the side of Beauโ€™s head.โ€

Dean absorbed that information in a heartbeat. โ€œYour head of security never had any intention of pulling the trigger.โ€

Aaron leaned forward. โ€œBeau didnโ€™t know that.โ€

Sloaneโ€™s father liked issuing orders and ultimatums. It was a small hop to threats. Beau wasnโ€™t a person who would take well to being threatened. He had a temper. The moment the gun came out, he would have fought back.

โ€œHe grabbed a loose brick,โ€ Aaron said.

Blunt-force trauma.

โ€œSelf-defense,โ€ I said out loud. If Victor McKinney had drawn a gun on Beau, it was a clear case of self-defense. And if Aaron had seen the connection between Beauโ€™s arrest and what the Majestyโ€™s head of security had been sent to do, Grayson Shaw almost certainly had as well.

โ€œHow could your father let Beau take the fall for the first four murders?โ€ I asked. โ€œDoesnโ€™t he care that thereโ€™s a serial killer still out there?โ€

โ€œMy guess?โ€ Aaron replied. โ€œMy father thinks he and the FBI have scared the original killer away. Heโ€™s not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. As it stands, Beau Donovan will never lay hands on me again, and no one is questioning why the Majestyโ€™s head of security went after Beau.โ€

โ€œWhy bring this to us?โ€ Lia asked. โ€œDaddy Dearest isnโ€™t going to be very happy with you.โ€

โ€œHe rarely is.โ€ Aaron stood, shrugging off the words like they meant nothingโ€”which, of course, told me they meant more than he would ever admit.

Youโ€™re the golden boy. The first-born son. The heir.

I stared at him for a moment, my mind assembling the pieces of the puzzle.ย You donโ€™t go against your father without a reason.ย โ€œTory,โ€ I said. โ€œYou did this for Tory.โ€

Aaron didnโ€™t reply, but Michael translated his expression. โ€œYeah,โ€ he said, sounding gut-punched at the depth of emotion he saw on Aaronโ€™s face. โ€œHe did.โ€

I read between the lines of Michaelโ€™s words, my gaze locked on Aaronโ€™s.ย You love her.ย The realization took hold in the pit of my stomach.

Aaronโ€™s phone buzzed. He looked down, saved from confirming that heโ€™d risked his fatherโ€™s wrath to save Beau because Beau was Toryโ€™s brother.

โ€œDo we want to know what that text says?โ€ Sloane asked.

Aaron looked up, meeting his sisterโ€™s gaze. โ€œThat would depend on how you feel about the man Beau put in a coma waking up.โ€
