Aaron took a seat on the edge of Victorโs desk instead of behind it. โWhatโs your name?โ he asked Sloane quietly.โ
Beside me, Sloane opened her mouth, then closed it again.
โHer name is Sloane.โ Liaโs chin jutted out as she answered on Sloaneโs behalf.
โWhatโs your last name, Sloane?โ Aaronโs voice was gentle. I thought of the way heโd responded to Sloaneโs statistics with a smile the day we met him. And then I thought about the brief, heated exchange weโd seen between him and Tory.
โTavish,โ Sloane whispered. She forced her gaze up, her blue eyes wide. โI meant to steal that shirt.โ
I groaned internally. Sloane had no capacity for deception whatsoever.ย Then again,ย I thought,ย sheโs sitting here across from her fatherโs son, not saying a word.
โIโm going to pretend I didnโt hear that,โ Aaron told us, a smile tugging at the edges of his lips. It was hard to reconcile the man in front of us with the one weโd seen in the alleyway.
You know Tory. She knows you. Emotions were running highโI was struck, suddenly, by a possibility.ย Maybe youย reallyย know Tory. Maybe Camille wasnโt the one you were looking at that night at the sushi restaurant. Attraction, affection, tensionโmaybe you were watching Tory.
What if Tory had chosen the Majesty for drinks that night because she wanted to see him? Sheโd lied to Briggs and Sterling about choosing the restaurant.
What if sheโs not afraidย ofย Aaron? What if sheโs afraid heโll leave her?
Or afraid someone will find out theyโre involved?
Someone,ย I thought,ย like Aaronโs father.
โTavish.โ Aaron repeated Sloaneโs last name back to her, then paused, like his mouth had gone dry. โMy father had a friend once,โ he continued softly. โHer name was Margot Tavish.โ
โI have to go.โ Sloane bolted to her feet. She was trembling. โI have to goย now.โ
โPlease,โ Aaron said. โSloane. Donโt go.โ
โI have to,โ Sloane whispered. โIโm not supposed to be here. Iโm not supposed to tell.โ
She wanted him to like her. Even panicked, even trying to get away from him, she wanted him to like her so badly that I could feel it.
โWe have the same eyes,โ Aaron told her. โThey call them Shaw blue, did you know that?โ
โA chameleonโs tongue is longer than its body! And a blue whaleโs weighs two-point-seven tons!โ
โIโm sorry,โ Aaron said, holding up his hands and taking a step back. โI didnโt mean to scare you or to spring this on you or to put you on the spot. Itโs just that I found out about your mother right after I graduated high school. I went to see her. She said there was a child, but by the time Iโd confronted my father, your mother had overdosed and you were gone.โ
Gone.ย It took me a second to do the math. Aaron would have graduated high school around the same time that Sloane was recruited to the Naturals program.
โYou canโt know about me,โ Sloane told Aaron softly. โThatโs the rule.โ โItโs not my rule.โ Aaron stood up and walked around to her side of the
desk. โIโm not like my father. If Iโd known about you sooner, I promise I would haveโโ
โYou would have what?โ Lia cut in protectively. Sloane was our family, more than she would ever be his, and right now, she was vulnerable and raw and bleeding. Lia didnโt trust strangers, and she especially didnโt trust this strangerโwho weโd seen fighting with Tory Howardโwith Sloane.
Before Aaron could reply, the door to the office opened. Judd was standing there. And so was Aaronโs father.
