Chapter no 29

All In (The Naturals, #3)

Aaron took a seat on the edge of Victorโ€™s desk instead of behind it. โ€œWhatโ€™s your name?โ€ he asked Sloane quietly.โ€Œ

Beside me, Sloane opened her mouth, then closed it again.

โ€œHer name is Sloane.โ€ Liaโ€™s chin jutted out as she answered on Sloaneโ€™s behalf.

โ€œWhatโ€™s your last name, Sloane?โ€ Aaronโ€™s voice was gentle. I thought of the way heโ€™d responded to Sloaneโ€™s statistics with a smile the day we met him. And then I thought about the brief, heated exchange weโ€™d seen between him and Tory.

โ€œTavish,โ€ Sloane whispered. She forced her gaze up, her blue eyes wide. โ€œI meant to steal that shirt.โ€

I groaned internally. Sloane had no capacity for deception whatsoever.ย Then again,ย I thought,ย sheโ€™s sitting here across from her fatherโ€™s son, not saying a word.

โ€œIโ€™m going to pretend I didnโ€™t hear that,โ€ Aaron told us, a smile tugging at the edges of his lips. It was hard to reconcile the man in front of us with the one weโ€™d seen in the alleyway.

You know Tory. She knows you. Emotions were running highโ€”I was struck, suddenly, by a possibility.ย Maybe youย reallyย know Tory. Maybe Camille wasnโ€™t the one you were looking at that night at the sushi restaurant. Attraction, affection, tensionโ€”maybe you were watching Tory.

What if Tory had chosen the Majesty for drinks that night because she wanted to see him? Sheโ€™d lied to Briggs and Sterling about choosing the restaurant.

What if sheโ€™s not afraidย ofย Aaron? What if sheโ€™s afraid heโ€™ll leave her?

Or afraid someone will find out theyโ€™re involved?

Someone,ย I thought,ย like Aaronโ€™s father.

โ€œTavish.โ€ Aaron repeated Sloaneโ€™s last name back to her, then paused, like his mouth had gone dry. โ€œMy father had a friend once,โ€ he continued softly. โ€œHer name was Margot Tavish.โ€

โ€œI have to go.โ€ Sloane bolted to her feet. She was trembling. โ€œI have to goย now.โ€

โ€œPlease,โ€ Aaron said. โ€œSloane. Donโ€™t go.โ€

โ€œI have to,โ€ Sloane whispered. โ€œIโ€™m not supposed to be here. Iโ€™m not supposed to tell.โ€

She wanted him to like her. Even panicked, even trying to get away from him, she wanted him to like her so badly that I could feel it.

โ€œWe have the same eyes,โ€ Aaron told her. โ€œThey call them Shaw blue, did you know that?โ€

โ€œA chameleonโ€™s tongue is longer than its body! And a blue whaleโ€™s weighs two-point-seven tons!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Aaron said, holding up his hands and taking a step back. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean to scare you or to spring this on you or to put you on the spot. Itโ€™s just that I found out about your mother right after I graduated high school. I went to see her. She said there was a child, but by the time Iโ€™d confronted my father, your mother had overdosed and you were gone.โ€

Gone.ย It took me a second to do the math. Aaron would have graduated high school around the same time that Sloane was recruited to the Naturals program.

โ€œYou canโ€™t know about me,โ€ Sloane told Aaron softly. โ€œThatโ€™s the rule.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s not my rule.โ€ Aaron stood up and walked around to her side of the

desk. โ€œIโ€™m not like my father. If Iโ€™d known about you sooner, I promise I would haveโ€”โ€

โ€œYou would have what?โ€ Lia cut in protectively. Sloane was our family, more than she would ever be his, and right now, she was vulnerable and raw and bleeding. Lia didnโ€™t trust strangers, and she especially didnโ€™t trust this strangerโ€”who weโ€™d seen fighting with Tory Howardโ€”with Sloane.

Before Aaron could reply, the door to the office opened. Judd was standing there. And so was Aaronโ€™s father.
