Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

AOIFE

AFTER SEARCHINGย the hospital for Joey, and coming up empty, I had called up our friends to come get me, needing bodies on the ground to help sniff him out before he came to any harm.

Tell me that youโ€™re okay. Please. Iโ€™m going out of my mind here.

ANSWER YOUR PHONE, ASSHOLE!!!

How could you just vanish on me? WTF Joe! Call me, dammit!

Where are you? Come on, Joey, please.

โ€œWEโ€™LL FIND HIM,โ€ Podge tried to appease me, as I sat in the passenger seat of his Ford Fiesta, with my entire body racking with shivers, on the way back to Ballylaggin. โ€œItโ€™s only been a couple of hours since he left the hospital, Aoif.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Alec and Casey agreed from the back seat. โ€œHe wonโ€™t have gone far.โ€

โ€œYou guys donโ€™t get it,โ€ I strangled out, knees bopping restlessly as I tried his phone for the millionth time, only to be sent to voicemail again. โ€œHeโ€™s not in his right frame of mind.โ€

His sister was lying in a hospital bed with a collapsed lung. He was too injured to be out on the streets, but that was exactly what was happening. I knew in my heart of hearts that there was a ninety-nine percent chance that he had gone off the deep end. I hoped with everything I had inside of me that he hadnโ€™t, but the fear still festered away inside of me.

โ€œSo? Lynchyโ€™s never in his right mind,โ€ Alec piped up. โ€œHe spends a solid eighty percent of his time off his trolley and itโ€™s never stopped him from looking after himself.โ€

โ€œNot helping, Al,โ€ Casey grumbled.

โ€œHe has a concussion,โ€ I hissed, brushing my hair off my face. โ€œA really bad one, and his head is all smashed up. He shouldnโ€™t be out of bed, let alone wandering around by himself.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t do that in here,โ€ Casey snapped, and I twisted around to see her smack an unlit cigarette out of Alecโ€™s hand. โ€œSheโ€™s pregnant, asshole.โ€

โ€œOh shit, yeah.โ€ He rummaged around the floor of the car for his cigarette. โ€œMy bad, sexy-legs.โ€

โ€œCan you drop me off at Elkโ€™s Terrace?โ€ I asked Podge. โ€œIโ€™ll check his house and ask around his neighbors.โ€

โ€œNo problem,โ€ Podge replied. โ€œIโ€™ll take a spin over to the GAA grounds and search there.โ€

โ€œYeah, and Iโ€™ll check Biddies,โ€ Casey offered. โ€œIโ€™ll go with you,โ€ Alec chimed in.

โ€œNo, Al, you need to go to Shane Hollandโ€™s gaff,โ€ Podge interrupted. โ€œSee if heโ€™s been there.โ€

โ€œWhat? No fucking way,โ€ Alec vehemently protested. โ€œThat prickโ€™s a psycho. Heโ€™s as likely to stab me as he is to speak to me.โ€

โ€œCome on, Al.โ€

โ€œWhy me?โ€

โ€œBecause youโ€™reโ€ฆwell, youโ€™re you,โ€ Podge settled on. โ€œCome on. You know Lynchy would do it for you.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ he huffed. โ€œBut if anything happens to me, itโ€™s on you, ginger- pubes!โ€

Casey: Heโ€™s not at Biddies, babe.

Podge: No sign of him at the pavilion.

Alec: Nobody home @ pyschoโ€™s house.

ANXIOUS, I tapped out a two-word response and clicked send before sliding my phone back into my pocket.

Aoife: Keep looking.

THE NIGHT AIRย whipped at my face, as I stood at the Lynchโ€™s front door, with my fist banging incessantly on the frosted panel of the door.

โ€œWhat did you do?โ€ I demanded when Darren finally swung the door inwards. โ€œWhat did you say to him?โ€

โ€œMaybe you should calm downโ€”โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t bullshit me, Darren.โ€

Furious, I pushed past him and stalked into their house, unwilling to

pander to anyoneโ€™s bullshit, not when he was teetering on the edge like I knew he was.

โ€œYou,โ€ I spat when I stormed into the kitchen and was confronted by the woman who bore him. โ€œItโ€™s always you.โ€

โ€œAoife?โ€ Marieโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ โ€œYour son is gone!โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean heโ€™s gone?โ€ Darren demanded, joining us in the kitchen. โ€œGone from the hospital?โ€

โ€œYes, heโ€™s gone from the hospital,โ€ I snapped. โ€œHe discharged himself and I want to know what you fuckers said to him.โ€

โ€œHe wasnโ€™t supposed to do that,โ€ Marie sobbed, sinking down on her smoking chair at the table. โ€œOh, Darren.โ€

โ€œWhat did you say to him this time, huh?โ€ I sneered, hands on my hips, turning my attention on her. โ€œAnd donโ€™t even think about feeding me a line, because Iย knowย youโ€™ve caused this. Your โ€˜poor meโ€™ act might work on your sons, but I see through you, Marie.โ€

โ€œListen, he showed up at Shannonโ€™s hospital room earlier.โ€ Eyeing me warily, Darren added, โ€œThere was a conversation, we had words, and he stormed off. I presumed he went back to his bed.โ€

โ€œYou hadย words?โ€ I seethed, feeling my temperature spike right along with my anxiety. โ€œWhat kind of words?โ€

โ€œHe has a really bad attitude problem.โ€

โ€œOf course he does!โ€ I sneered, throwing my hands up. โ€œHow else is he supposed to be? You donโ€™t know what heโ€™s had to deal with these past six years.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re overstepping, Aoife.โ€

โ€œWhat did you say to him?โ€ I pressed. โ€œSomething pushed him over to edge and I want to know what that something was!โ€

โ€œI know you mean well, but I donโ€™t need to explain myself to you.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, explain yourself to your conscience,โ€ I shot back, trembling. โ€œBecause if anything happens to him then itโ€™s on you!โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s cut the bullshit here. If Joey signed himself out of hospital itโ€™s for one reason and one reason only,โ€ Darren was quick to counter. โ€œHeโ€™s out chasing his next fix.โ€

โ€œShut up,โ€ I warned, holding a hand up. โ€œShut your goddamn mouth.โ€ โ€œHeโ€™s an addict, Aoife, and thatโ€™s not on me.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that cut and dry, Darren,โ€ I heard myself choke out. โ€œHe wasnโ€™t born an addict. Thatโ€™s not who he is. His issues with addiction are a direct result of spending eighteen years in this hellhole house, with those godawful people you both have the misfortune of calling your parents.โ€

โ€œAoife, stop it!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get even get me started on you, Marie. You donโ€™t deserve to call him your son,โ€ I snarled, swinging around to glare at his mother. โ€œYou haveย neverย deserved his love and you never will!โ€ Blinking back my tears, I spat

my pain out at the woman who had created so much turmoil in my boyfriend. โ€œEveryone thinks your husband is the abusive parent, but I see what you do to your son.โ€ I tapped my temple, beyond livid. โ€œI know what you are, Marie. I see right fucking through you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t speak to my mother like that,โ€ Darren warned, taking a defensive stance in front of her. โ€œYou can speak civilly or you can leave.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re a fucking joke,โ€ I continued, pointing my finger at her. โ€œYouโ€™ve spent years getting into Joeyโ€™s mind, twisting his thought process and fucking with his confidence. Convincing him that heโ€™s the second coming of his father. That heโ€™s dangerous, and a liability, and a disappointment!โ€

โ€œHow dare you!โ€

โ€œYeah, I know what youโ€™ve done to him,โ€ I sneered unapologetically. โ€œAnd you can bury your head in the sand all you want, but youโ€™re the mental abuser in this instance. You broke him, Marie. You have damaged Joey deeper with your words than his father ever has with his fists. Youโ€™re a gaslighting bitch!โ€

โ€œLike you can talk.โ€

โ€œAll I haveย everย done is love your son.โ€

โ€œA little too much,โ€ she erupted on me, hands clutching her head as she screamed, โ€œYou want to throw blame on who fucked up my sonโ€™s life then you need look no further than the person staring back at you in the mirror! Because youโ€™re the one destroying his future, Aoife. Youโ€™re the one saddling him with a baby he doesnโ€™t even want!โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about,โ€ I choked out, feeling like she rammed a red-hot poker through my chest with her words. โ€œHe wants the

baby.โ€

โ€œHe wants to make you happy,โ€ she roared in my face. โ€œThatโ€™s not the same thing as him wanting to be a father.โ€

โ€œTell me something,โ€ Darren decided to interject. โ€œIf you knew my brother was in such a bad way, why didnโ€™t you do something to protect him?โ€

โ€œFuck you, Darren,โ€ I spat. โ€œYou donโ€™t know a damn thing about either one of us.โ€

โ€œI know my brother isnโ€™t well,โ€ he countered evenly. โ€œAnd so do you. So, why the hell would you trap him into fatherhood?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t trap him.โ€ I stiffened, feeling my hackles rise and my heart crack all in one breath. โ€œI hardly got pregnant on purpose, did I?โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t you?โ€

My blood ran cold. โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œOh, come off it, Aoife.โ€ He gave me a hard look when he asked, โ€œHeโ€™s a handsome lad. How many times was he off his head when you let him inside your body?โ€

โ€œExcuseย me?โ€

โ€œHey.โ€ He held his hands up. โ€œIf you want to storm into this house, all guns blazing, laying blame at our feet for Joeyโ€™s downfall, then Iโ€™m more than happy to hold the mirror up to you.โ€

โ€œI wouldย neverย hurt Joey,โ€ I heard myself defend, refusing to back down to this emotional manipulation. This shit might float on his siblings, but not me. โ€œI love your brother.โ€

โ€œNo,ย Iย love my brother, Aoife,โ€ he argued hotly. โ€œSo, make no mistake about it when I tell you that Iโ€™m willing to do whatever it takes to protect

him.โ€

โ€œWhat are you saying?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m saying that if you love my brother as much as you say you do, then youโ€™ll do the right thing for him and make this go away.โ€

โ€œThisย being your niece or nephew?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s not be overly dramatic here and start labeling a fetus,โ€ he replied evenly. โ€œListen, my mother already told me that you donโ€™t come from money. If itโ€™s a matter of not being able to afford the trip to England, then I am more than willing to take care of the financial side of things.โ€

โ€œThink about it, Aoife,โ€ Marie joined the fray, tone desperate, as she pleaded with me. โ€œIf you wonโ€™t put your own future first, then think of my sonโ€™s.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t fucking believe this.โ€ Choking out a humorless laugh, I roughly batted away a tear. โ€œEvery time I think you canโ€™t stoop any lower, you just keep on hitting it out of the park.โ€

โ€œAoife, be rational here.โ€

โ€œI am being rational,โ€ I snapped, glaring at Darren. โ€œYou do realize if Joey knew what you just offered me, it would kill him? You do get that, donโ€™t you? This is just another in a long list of betrayals.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not betraying my brother,โ€ he argued. โ€œIโ€™m trying to protect him. And the way I see it, the only way he gets hurt is if you go running your mouth off, which in that instance, then you would be the one crushing him, Aoife, not me.โ€

He had me over a barrel and he knew it.

Bastard.

โ€œYeah, well, weโ€™re keeping the baby,โ€ I spat, feeling my hand drop to the small swell of my stomach, as a wave of maternal instinct washed over me. โ€œItโ€™s a done deal, asshole. Weโ€™ve already decided.โ€

โ€œYou mean youโ€™ve decided.โ€

โ€œNo, I mean weย bothย decided,โ€ I countered, unwilling to back down or be bribed by this asshole. โ€œAnd thereโ€™s absolutely nothing either of you can say to change that. You canโ€™t pay me off or bribe me because Iโ€™m not going away.โ€

โ€œThen youโ€™re going to ruin his life.โ€

โ€œThen at least heโ€™ll be ruined with love and not pain.โ€
