AOIFE
โARE YOU OKAY?โย Joey asked, when we parked up at the footpath outside of my house later that afternoon.
The drive back from the hospital had been spent mostly in silence, while we both mentally reeled. He had his eyes locked on the road ahead of us the entire time, while I had been unable to tear my gaze away from the strip ultrasound images the technician had printed off for us.
It was real.
I heard the heartbeat.
There really was a little baby growing inside of my body.
โMolloy?โ Killing the engine of the car, Joey unfastened his seatbelt and turned in his seat to face me. โAre you okay?โ
I wasnโt sure.
It all felt so surreal.
I didnโt know what to do or how I felt. โAre you?โ
He shrugged almost helplessly. โShe called meย Dad, Molloy.โ
โIย know.โ Relieved that he seemed to be reeling too, I nodded eagerly and turned in my seat and mirrored his actions. โShe called meย Mom, Joe.โ
โIt sort of just hit me when we were in there, you know?โ he mused, rubbing his jaw. โWeโre going to be parents.โ
โTo aย person,โ I agreed, chewing on my nail nervously. โA literal human being.โ
โThis time next year, thereโs going to be a kid back there,โ he added, gesturing to the backseat of my car. โOneย weย made.โ
โNever mind next year,โ I choked out. โWeโre going to have a babyย thisย Halloween.โ My eyes widened. โHalloween, Joe. Weโre going to have a trick- or-treater.โ
โAnd Santa at Christmas.โ
โAnd the Easter bunny in Spring.โ
โAnd I donโt have a house, or a car, or a fucking qualification.โ He scrubbed his face with his hand. โWe are so out of our depth here, baby.โ
โYouโre fine,โ I accused. โYouโre amazing with babies. Iโm the one in trouble here. The only infant Iโve ever held was my cousinโs pet baby gerbil and guess what happened to it, Joe? I dropped it. Uh-huh. Thatโs right. The poor thing nose-planted its cage when I was left in charge.โ
โOkay, comparing your ability to mother our child to caring for your cousinโs pet rodent is not the same thing, Molloy.โ
โMaybe not, but Iโm not exactly the responsible mother-type, am I?โ โAnd I am?โ
โOh please.โ I rolled me eyes. โYouโve been a dad for your entire life. You even have that โdonโt make me come up those stairsโ dad threat down to
a fine art.โ
โWow. Thanks.โ
โIโm serious, Joe. Youโve got this.ย Iโmย screwed.โ
โGive me another look at that,โ he muttered, snatching the baby scan out of my hand and holding it up to his face. โOh Jesus, I think I see a dick.โ
โWhat? No, you donโt.โ Gaping, I snatched the picture back and studied where he was pointing to. โThatโs not a dick, thatโs a leg.โ
โNo, thatโs a leg,โ he corrected, tapping the picture. โThatโs another leg.
Andย thatย is a dick.โ
โThatโs the babyโs cord.โ
โThatโs a dick, Molloy.โ Dropping his head on the steering wheel, he muttered something incoherent under his breath and groaned loudly. โItโs a boy.โ
โBut you said itโs too early to tell.โ
โYeah, well, I donโt know what to tell ya, becauseย thatโsย a dick.โ โBut how can you tell?โ
โTrust me, I have seen too many of those fucking sonograms down
through the years. I know a dick when I see one.โ โWhat if youโre wrong?โ
โI hope I am.โ
โJoey.โ I slapped his arm. โDonโt say that.โ
โDonโt give him my name,โ he whispered, head still resting on the steering wheel. โPlease, Aoif, just give him yours and break the cycle.โ
His parents.
It always came back to his parents.
โThereโs nothing to break, Joe,โ I replied, stroking his hair. โYou areย not
him, and I amย notย her.โ
โPlease listen to me. I donโt want you to give him my name,โ he admitted quietly. โNot my first name and definitely not my last name. I donโt want that kid to have a single thing passed down to him that came from me.โ
โJoey, come on, we donโt even know if itโs a boy.โ
โItโs a boy,โ he mumbled, pulling back to look at me. “Regardless, you need to make that baby a Molloy. Donโt give him my name.”
โJoey.โ My heart sped up. โYouโre this babyโs father, and Iโm proud of that.โ I reached up to stroke his bruised cheek. โIโm proud ofย you. I have never been ashamed of who you are or where you come from, and neither will our baby.โ
Emotion flickered in his green eyes. “What if I turn into him?” “You wonโt.”
“But what if I do? What if I already am?” “That’s impossible.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“Because I know him and I know you.” I stroked his cheek. โHeโs a bully and youโre a man. Thereโs no comparison. You are polar opposites. You and Teddy areย notย the same person, Joe,” I whispered. “You’re not even close.”
โIโll never hurt you.โ โI know.โ
โI mean it.โ He snatched my hand up and held it to his bruised cheek. โI willย neverย put a finger on you, Aoife Molloy. Never. Not on you, or our kid.โ
โIย know,โ I repeated, leaning in close to press my forehead to his. โIโll do right by you,โ he vowed gruffly. โI swear I will.โ
โYou donโt need to convince me, Joe.โ I leaned in and pressed my lips to
his before whispering, โIโve been sold on you since I was twelve years old.โ He looked at me for the longest time before blowing out a pained breath.
โI love you, Aoif.โ
โLove you, too, Joe.โ
โCan I keep one of these?โ he asked, holding up the long strip of sonogram images.
โOf course,โ I replied, heart-bucking wildly in my chest, as I watched him carefully tear one off the strip and place it in his wallet. โItโs your baby, Joe.โ
โYeah.โ Nodding to himself, he placed the sonogram in the picture slot in his wallet and smiled. โHe is.โ
