Chapter no 61 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒMY HEART I S I NSIDE HER

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

AOIFE

โ€œWELL,ย you sure know how to make a splash,โ€ Podge said on Friday morning, when he joined me at our usual lunch table in the canteen for small break. โ€œThe whole place is talking about you, Aoif.โ€

Yes, the entire student body at BCSย wasย talking about me.

Some of the bolder ones were even talkingย toย me, asking me for answers to questions that were nobodyโ€™s business.

Hell, even one of the substitute teachers asked me if it was true. Worst of all, Joey wasnโ€™t here.

He hadnโ€™t shown up.

โ€œIs he here yet?โ€ I croaked out, not bothering to acknowledge the obvious. โ€œWas he outside when you went for a smoke at the start of break?โ€

Grimacing, Podge shook his head. โ€œNot yet. But heโ€™ll be here.โ€

I glanced at the clock on the wall, feeling my anxiety swell. โ€œItโ€™s ten past eleven, Podge. Heโ€™s already after missing the first three classes. School ends at twelve. We only have one class left after lunch.โ€

โ€œSomething must have come up at home.โ€ My boyfriendโ€™s best friend offered me another uncomfortable shrug. โ€œListen, I know it looks bad, but

thereโ€™s no way Lynchy would leave ya to deal with the mob on your own unless it wasnโ€™t important.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Feeling sick to my stomach, I drummed my fingers on the desk, and fought back the urge to scream. โ€œThatโ€™s what Iโ€™m worried about.โ€

Because I had enough faith in my boyfriend to know that he wouldnโ€™t skip out on me. Joey was a lot of things but he was no coward. Never in his life had he backed down from responsibility, which only caused the anxiety festering inside of me to swell.

Mam had called the Gards last night and reported Teddy. It didnโ€™t take a genius to know that his absence at school was linked to it.

โ€œThatโ€™s her,โ€ a group of baby first years whispered, as they hurried past our table, huddled close together. โ€œThe pregnant sixth year.โ€

โ€œIs the guy sheโ€™s sitting with the father?โ€

โ€œI heard she doesnโ€™t know who the father is.โ€

Damn Miss Lane for giving Casey lunchtime detention. It wasnโ€™t so bad when she was with me during class. She had a mouth like a sailor and an answer for every eejit stupid enough to approach me in the hallway. That mouth had landed her in detention, though, which meant that I was alone and bleeding in the shark tank.

I was grateful to Podge for coming to sit with me. Every other one of my so-called friends were treating me like pregnancy was contagious. Aside from Casey, it was the boys in my class who were being kind.

The girls wereย awful.

I hadnโ€™t been summoned to the office for the dreaded talk yet, but I knew there was only time in it before the rumors of my wayward ways reached our

principalโ€™s ears.

โ€œHowโ€™d Lynchy take the news?โ€ Podge asked, dragging me back to the present. โ€œI tried to call him a few times, but he didnโ€™t answer.โ€

โ€œBetter than could be expected.โ€ I blew out a shaky breath. โ€œEspecially after how he found out.โ€

โ€œShitty behavior out of your brother,โ€ he offered. โ€œTelling Ricey before Lynchy knew. Jesus, thatโ€™s low.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ I groaned, still feeling sick at the thought. โ€œIโ€™m so done with Kev.โ€

โ€œSo, whatโ€™s the plan?โ€ I blinked. โ€œThe plan?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Podge nodded. โ€œAre you going to have it?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I bit out, feeling oddly defensive. โ€œObviously.โ€

โ€œGood for you.โ€ Nodding to himself, Podge scooped up a spoonful of yoghurt and popped it into his mouth. โ€œHeโ€™ll do right by ya.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I whispered. โ€œI know he will. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ Itโ€™s just a huge mess, you know?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to even think about it.โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t blame you.โ€

โ€œListen.โ€ Reaching across the lunch table, he pressed a hand on my shoulder and gave me a supportive squeeze. โ€œYouโ€™re not the first to have a baby off a lad in school, Aoif,โ€ he offered. โ€œAnd you sure as shit wonโ€™t be the last. Just ignore them. Youโ€™ll be old news soon enough.โ€

โ€œYeah, Podge, thanks and all,โ€ I mumbled, feeling my cheeks burn from the intense stares I was receiving. โ€œBut somehow I doubt this is going away any time soon.โ€

โ€œHey, sexy-legs, I slapped the shit out of your brother just now,โ€ Alec declared, sinking down on the table in front of us. โ€œHope ya donโ€™t mind.โ€

My eyes widened. โ€œYou did?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€ He winked. โ€œLynchyโ€™s on his last warning, so he couldnโ€™t do it. And I couldnโ€™t have Brains doing my favorite girl dirty like that.โ€

โ€œWhere is he now?โ€

โ€œWho? Brains?โ€ Alec shrugged. โ€œOn the phone to your mammy, I suspect.โ€

โ€œAw, Al…โ€ I couldnโ€™t stop the smile from spreading across my face, thrilled that little shit got put in his place. โ€œThanks, buddy.โ€

โ€œAnytime,โ€ he replied with a grin. โ€œAnd just so you know, even with a big belly on ya, youโ€™ll still be completely rideable.โ€

โ€œSmooth, Al,โ€ Podge chuckled. โ€œWhat every girl wants to hear.โ€ โ€œI call dibs on godfather,โ€ Alec chimed in.

โ€œYou canโ€™t call dibs on godfather, asshole.โ€ โ€œI just did.โ€

โ€œWell, it doesnโ€™t count,โ€ Podge huffed. โ€œIf anyoneโ€™s going to be godfather, itโ€™s going to be me.โ€

โ€œNope, see, sexy-legs is going to give devil-tits the nod as godmother, which gives Lynchy free rein over who his spawnโ€™s godfather will be.โ€

โ€œYeah, because referencing our best friendโ€™s unborn child as spawn is something a godfather would say.โ€

โ€œListen, ginger-pubes, itโ€™s happening, so back the fuck off and donโ€™t even think about trying to steal my thunder on this.โ€

Podge shrugged. โ€œYeah, well, Iโ€™d rather have ginger pubes than a crab infested cock.โ€

Alec gasped. โ€œI donโ€™t have crabs.โ€ โ€œAnymore.โ€

โ€œIย neverย had crabs.โ€ He narrowed his eyes. โ€œI was scratching because I

shaved my balls and the itch was fucking horrendous!โ€ I laughed. โ€œYou shaved your balls, Al?โ€

โ€œOh yeah, Al here is big on the man-scaping,โ€ Podge chimed in, as the bell sounded around us, signaling the end of small break.

โ€œWhat can I say?โ€ Alec jumped up and offered me a lopsided grin. โ€œIโ€™m a gentleman.โ€

โ€œDo you want to walk with us, Aoif?โ€ Podge asked, rising to his feet. โ€œWeโ€™re all in Irish with Dineen next.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll catch up with you guys,โ€ I said, waving them both off. โ€œI need to pee.โ€

โ€œKeep that head up, sexy-legs,โ€ Alec called over his shoulder as he sauntered out of the canteen with Podge. โ€œAnd keep those legs closed until my god-child is fully cooked.โ€

โ€œThanks, Al.โ€ I sighed heavily, ignoring the gawks and stares I was receiving. โ€œThanks a lot, buddy.โ€

Iย WASย in coming out of the bathroom, on my way to Irish, when my brother stopped me in the hallway. โ€œWe need to talk.โ€

Dutifully ignoring him, I sidestepped him and kept walking.

โ€œAoife, stop.โ€ He caught ahold of my arm and pulled me back to him. โ€œPlease. We need to talk about this.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, Kev?โ€ I snapped, begrudgingly falling into step alongside him as we walked down the corridor towards my classroom. โ€œAre you blaming me for your busted lip, too?โ€

โ€œYour boyfriendโ€™s henchman hit me.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, snitches get stitches, asshole.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, okay?โ€ Holding his hands up in front of me, my brother tried to reason with a part of my heart that wasnโ€™t there anymore. Not for him, at least. โ€œI know what I did was shitty, okay? It was a really bad thing to do, Aoif. I get that now.โ€

โ€œToo little, too late.โ€

โ€œAoife, please?โ€ He sighed heavily. โ€œCome on.โ€

โ€œNo. Youโ€™ve heard what people are saying about me,โ€ I replied flatly, stopping outside of my classroom door. โ€œYouโ€™ve seen how theyโ€™ve been treating me. You cultivated that, Kev. You orchestrated this whole damn thing. So, shove your apology up your ass, because it doesnโ€™t fix anything for me.โ€

โ€œWhat you said yesterday about Joey? You were right,โ€ he admitted, scrubbing his jaw with his hand. โ€œIย donโ€™tย like him. Heย doesย threaten me. Iย didย do it to hurt him.โ€

He wasnโ€™t telling me anything I didnโ€™t already know.

โ€œBut I didnโ€™t take into account what my actions would do to you,โ€ he added, sounding genuinely remorseful. โ€œI didnโ€™tย think, period.โ€

โ€œWhat you did canโ€™t be fixed with an apology,โ€ I replied, unwilling to bend. โ€œYou canโ€™t detonate a bomb on someoneโ€™s life and then say oops when everything is blown to hell.โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s the uncle-to-be?โ€ Paul said, when he stepped out of our classroom. Slinging an arm around my brotherโ€™s shoulder, he smiled cruelly at me, while addressing my brother. โ€œAlright, Kev?โ€

Looking embarrassed, my brother shrugged awkwardly before muttering, โ€œAlright, Ricey?โ€

โ€œOh, bog off, Paul,โ€ I growled, just about done with his bullshit. โ€œIโ€™m trying to have a private conversation with my brother.โ€

โ€œPrivate?โ€ He sneered at me like I was a piece of shit on his shoe. โ€œThereโ€™s not a whole pile private about you, now is there, Aoife?โ€

Glaring up at him, I gave him the finger. โ€œScrew you.โ€

โ€œI told you that heโ€™d ruin you,โ€ he pushed cruelly. โ€œAnd now look at the state youโ€™re in.โ€ His gaze trailed over me, lingering on my stomach before he shook his head. โ€œYouโ€™re already getting fat.โ€

โ€œRicey,โ€ my brother tried to defend. โ€œLeave her alone.โ€ It was a pitiful attempt, and once put under the pressure of Paulโ€™s stare, he crumbled, shoulders slumping.

โ€œWhat do you care, lad?โ€ Paul laughed. โ€œYou said it yourself; your sisterโ€™s a fucking slut.โ€

I cast a glare to my brother, who had the good grace to bow his head in shame.

โ€œYou think I care about your opinion, Paul?โ€ I shot back, determined to defend myself against this assholeโ€™s taunting. โ€œThe best thing I ever did was get away from you.โ€

โ€œNo, that was the best thing you ever did forย me,โ€ he sneered. โ€œIt was the worst thing you ever did for yourself, because now all youโ€™ll ever be is the mother of that junkie scumbagโ€™s little bastard.โ€

โ€œSay it again.โ€

The breath left my body in a dizzy rush when a familiar menacing voice filled my ears.

My shoulders sagged and I honestly felt like I was about to collapse from the surge of relief that rocketed through my body.

โ€œSay it again, asshole,โ€ Joey repeated, coming up to stand behind me.

Tossing his hurley and helmet on the floor, he let his schoolbag fall off his shoulder, and hooked one strong arm around my waist before backing me up against his hard chest. โ€œI dare ya.โ€

Shivering when his hand smoothed over the small swell of my stomach, I felt like crying when his thumb gently moved up and down.

โ€œThis is the part where you run,โ€ I told my asshole ex. โ€œFast.โ€

My brother opened his mouth to speak, but Joey got there first. โ€œYou should listen to your sister.โ€

It was almost comical how quickly both boys took off, bolting off in opposite directions.

โ€œYeah, youย shouldย run,โ€ I called after my brother, thoroughly enjoying his discomfort, as I leaned against my boyfriendโ€™s chest. โ€œYou little bitch.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so fucking sorry Iโ€™m late,โ€ Joey muttered when they were out of earshot. โ€œI overslept.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just glad youโ€™re here,โ€ I replied, turning in his arms. โ€œI didnโ€™t think you were going to show โ€“ what theย hellย happened to your face?โ€

My mouth fell open and I gaped at the horrific bruising and swelling on the left side of his face.

โ€œJesus Christ, Joe.โ€ I reached up to touch him. โ€œYour cheek.โ€

โ€œYeah, I think itโ€™s broken,โ€ he muttered, gently batting my hand away, as he reached for his bag and hurley. โ€œDonโ€™t touch it, okay? Itโ€™s tender as fuck.โ€

โ€œBroken?โ€ I swallowed the lump in my throat as my heart cracked clean open.

He took another beating from his father. Another broken bone.

Another chip of his heart that would never be pieced back together.

โ€œHe did this to you.โ€ My voice cracked. โ€œBecause of me? Because of the baby?โ€

โ€œNo, not because of the baby,โ€ he replied in a soft tone. โ€œBecause heโ€™s a prick.โ€ He opened the classroom door and gestured to me to go first. โ€œThis isnโ€™t on you.โ€

โ€œAnd what time do you call this?โ€ Mr. Dineen demanded when we walked into class.

โ€œSorry weโ€™re late, sir,โ€ I declared before the teacher could go in on my boyfriend like he usually would. โ€œWeโ€™re having a bit of a crisis.โ€

โ€œA crisis?โ€

โ€œMorning sickness,โ€ some asshole fake-coughed from the back of the class, evoking a chorus of wolf-whistles and ooohs.

โ€œRight, well, Iโ€™ll let you off just this once,โ€ our teacher replied, cheeks reddening, as he gestured for us to take our seats.

Hurrying to the back of the class, I took my seat in the back row and watched as Joey waited at Mr. Dineenโ€™s desk for him to sign his red book.

On his way back to our desk, his movements were stiff and rigid and I knew all too well that the marks on his face werenโ€™t the only ones his father put on his body.

My heart cracked at the thought.

โ€œJoe,โ€ I whispered, when he carefully lowered himself onto the seat beside mine.

โ€œItโ€™s all good, Molloy.โ€ He tossed his hurley and helmet on floor at his feet, before turning to give me his full attention. โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€ His green eyes were warm and full of affection when he leaned in close and whispered, โ€œHow are you feeling?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€ He slipped his hand under the desk and squeezed my thigh. โ€œWell, you look good, baby.โ€

How he could be so good to me, so considerate and caring of my feelings, when he was going through hell, was beyond me.

โ€œI love you,โ€ I whispered, covering his hand with mine. โ€œSo much.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ Blowing out a pained breath, he entwined his fingers with mine. โ€œI know, Molloy.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s bad enough that youโ€™re both late to my class, but you have the nerve to have a full-blown conversation,โ€ Mr. Dineen barked, glowering at us. โ€œJoseph, would you care to tell the class what you two are whispering about? In your native tongue, if you will, since I have spent the past six years attempting to teach you the language.โ€

โ€œCeart go leor, a mhรบinteoir,โ€ my boyfriend replied with a nonchalant shrug as he replied in As Gaeilge. โ€œBhรญ mรฉ ag rรก le mo leannรกn go bhfuil grรก agam di.โ€

My heart slammed wildly in my chest as I mentally translated his words.

Fair enough, teacher. I was telling my sweetheart that I love her.

โ€œDรบirt mรฉ lรฉi freisin go bhfuil cuma รกlainn uirthi,โ€ Joey continued to say, not missing a beat.ย I also told her that she looks beautiful. Shrugging, he added, โ€œAgus go bhfuil mo chroรญ istigh inti.โ€ย And that my heart is inside her.

โ€œGo hiontach,โ€ Mr. Dineen replied, arching a brow.ย Impressive.ย โ€œLe haghaidh buachaill nach n-รฉisteann sa rang.โ€ย For a boy who doesnโ€™t listen in class.

โ€œSea.โ€ Joey smirked. โ€œTรก a fhios agam.โ€ย Yeah, I know.
