Chapter no 57 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒTHE BLACK SHEEP OF THE FAMILY

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

โ€œMAM!โ€ย I screamed, throwing the front door open, and barreling into my house on Thursday afternoon. How I had managed to drive home from school without crashing, I could only put down to my desperation to get to safety.ย To get to my mother.ย โ€œMam!โ€

โ€œAoife?โ€ With a tea towel in her hands, and a startled look on her face, my mother appeared in the kitchen doorway. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œMam!โ€ I cried, moving straight for her. โ€œHe lied.โ€

โ€œWho lied?โ€ she demanded, sweeping me up in her arms, as I collapsed against her. โ€œWhat happened, Aoife? Who lied, pet?โ€

โ€œKev.โ€ Crying hard and ugly, I wrapped my arms around my motherโ€™s neck and clung to her for all I was worth. โ€œHe toldย Paul, Mam. He toldย everyoneย at school.โ€

โ€œHe didย what?โ€

โ€œJoey knows โ€“ he found out in class,โ€ I cried, tightening my hold on her, as my entire body racked and heaved with sobs. โ€œI didnโ€™t even get a chance to tell him myself.โ€

โ€œOh Jesus. How did he take it?โ€

โ€œHow do you think?โ€ I cried. โ€œHorribly. Heโ€™s furious with me for keeping it from him.โ€

โ€œOh, Aoife.โ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t deserve that, Mam,โ€ I sobbed. โ€œTo be told like that in front of everyone.โ€ I shivered violently at the memory. โ€œIt was soย wrong.โ€

โ€œI can only imagine.โ€

A few moments later, the front door swung inwards, and my brother appeared, looking red-faced and flustered.

โ€œAoif.โ€ Holding his hands up, Kev approached with caution. โ€œBefore you say anything else, just know that I didnโ€™t know that Paul was going toโ€”โ€

โ€œYou bastard!โ€ Not giving him a chance to finish speaking, I swung around and lunged for my brother, scratching and clawing at his face, as I stooped to a level of despair I had never felt before in my life. โ€œHow could you do this to me?โ€

โ€œYou did this to yourself,โ€ Kev roared back, snatching my wrists up and pinning my arms to my sides. โ€œKeep your goddamn hands to yourself, Aoife.โ€

โ€œI hate you,โ€ I screamed, ripping my hands free only to shove him in the chest. โ€œDo you hear me? I fucking hate you, Kevin.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, Iโ€™m not too crazy about you, either.โ€

โ€œStop it, you two,โ€ Mam snapped, coming to stand between us. โ€œThatโ€™s enough.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s the one throwing slaps.โ€

โ€œBecause he told our entire school that Iโ€™m pregnant.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t tell the entire school. I told a few close friends.โ€ โ€œSince when is my ex your close friend?โ€

โ€œSince always,โ€ my brother roared back.

โ€œBullshit,โ€ I strangled out. โ€œPaul was only ever nice to you because he was with me.โ€

โ€œYou really believe that, donโ€™t you?โ€ โ€œBecause itโ€™sย true.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have authority over who Iโ€™m friends with, Aoife,โ€ Kev sneered. โ€œAnd if you took your head out of your ass long enough to see whatโ€™s happening around you, then youโ€™d know that Iโ€™ve been friends with Ricey since first year. We actually got a lot closer this past year.โ€

โ€œI wonder why?โ€ I rolled my eyes. โ€œYou are such anย idiot.โ€

โ€œNot everything is about you, Aoife,โ€ Kev snapped. โ€œHe actually gives me the time of day โ€“ unlike that asshole youโ€™ve attached yourself to who can barely muster up the energy to acknowledge my existence.โ€

โ€œWhy should Joey acknowledge you?โ€ I demanded. โ€œItโ€™s not like youโ€™re even remotely friendly towards him to begin with. You never have been. Every time he comes over you act all superior around him, all the time, and itโ€™s disgusting. Seriously, you talk about me having my head in my ass, when youโ€™re the one with your nose cocked in the air, walking around thinking youโ€™re better than everyone else.โ€

โ€œIย amย better than him.โ€

โ€œBecause youโ€™re school smart, and heโ€™s not? Because youโ€™re going to

university, and he isnโ€™t? Because youโ€™ve been given the luxury of

concentrating on your studies, while heโ€™s had to work since he was twelve? You think that makes you better than him?โ€

โ€œSee, youโ€™re trying to insult me, when all youโ€™re really doing is listing off positive characteristic traits.โ€

Ugh.

โ€œKevin, Aoife,โ€ Mam tried to interject. โ€œLetโ€™s just back up a second and breathe.โ€

โ€œNewsflash, asshole, thereโ€™s a whole big world out there that wonโ€™t give a crap about how many points you get in the leaving cert, or how high you rank in your class,โ€ I shouted, ignoring our motherโ€™s request. โ€œAnd if you keep thisย holier than thouย attitude up, I guarantee you wonโ€™t last a week in the real world. So, you can go on thinking that youโ€™re better than my boyfriend, but the truth is you couldnโ€™t hold a candle to him,โ€ I spat. โ€œYouโ€™re a spoilt, pampered, little boy and Joey is a real man. You could try your whole life and never come close to being on his level!โ€

โ€œIf not being on his level means not having to slog it out under the bonnet of a car for the rest of my life, with permanently oil-stained hands, for a shitty wage at the end of the week, that wonโ€™t secure a decent mortgage, then you wonโ€™t hear me complaining.โ€

โ€œOh my god, you are such aย snob,โ€ I screamed, throwing my hands up.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Kev demanded. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m a realist? Because Iโ€™m stating facts? Because Iโ€™m pissed that my sister has thrown her future away for an asshole from Elkโ€™s Terrace, with no decent prospects?โ€

โ€œBecause youโ€™re ungrateful,โ€ Mam interjected, looking beyond hurt. โ€œAll of those fancy computer games lining the shelves in your bedroom were paid

for with oil-stained hands. Every stitch of clothes on your body, and every morsel of food youโ€™ve put in your mouth since the day you were born came from those same hands. Yourย fatherโ€™sย hands. Your father theย mechanic, who has spent most of his life busting his bollocks to give his children a better life than the one he had.โ€

โ€œWhich is exactly why you should be praisingย meย for appreciating the sacrifices that you and Dad have made for us, and beratingย herย for throwing them back in your face.โ€

โ€œHow have I thrown anything back in their faces?โ€

โ€œBy being thick enough to let that scumbag drug-addict between your legs,โ€ Kev snarled. โ€œYou do realize that the father of your grandchild is a fucking junkie, donโ€™t ya, Mam?โ€

โ€œShut the hell up, Kevin,โ€ I hissed, lunging for him once more.

โ€œStop,โ€ Mam warned, separating us again. โ€œCalm down, Aoife. This isnโ€™t good for you.โ€

โ€œHeย isnโ€™t good for her.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know what the fuck youโ€™re talking about!โ€

โ€œLook at you,โ€ my brother roared. โ€œLook at the state of you. Picking fights in your condition. You know why, donโ€™t you? Itโ€™s because heโ€™s after rubbing off on you. You had everything going for you, and you threw it away.โ€ He shook his head in disgust. โ€œForย him.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on in here?โ€ Dad asked then, strolling into the kitchen, lunchbox in hand โ€“ and yes, his hands were stained with engine oil. He looked from me to Kev, and his brows furrowed in confusion. โ€œWhat are you

all shouting about?โ€ He looked to Mam. โ€œItโ€™s lunchtime, Trish. Why are the twins not at school?โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ Mam was quick to interject, moving to our father. โ€œItโ€™s nothing, Tony.โ€

โ€œEnjoy becoming his mother, Aoife,โ€ Kev continued, ignoring our parents, as he glowered at me. โ€œBecause the entire town knows what kind of a doormat she is. You should take some tips from her sometime, because thatโ€™s all youโ€™ll amount to now.โ€

โ€œShut up, Kevin,โ€ Mam hissed. โ€œNot another goddamn word.โ€ โ€œMother?โ€ Dad blinked in confusion. โ€œWhose mother?โ€

โ€œThis isย yourย fault,โ€ Kev snapped, turning his accusing glare on our

father. โ€œYou brought him into our lives.โ€

โ€œPlease, Mam,โ€ I groaned, dropping my head in my hands, while Mam tried and failed to silence my furious brother. โ€œJust make him stopย talking.โ€

โ€œWho?โ€ Dad demanded, looking wholly confused. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

โ€œAoifeโ€™s pregnant!โ€ Kev roared, jabbing a finger in my direction, and with those words, he blew my world to smithereens.ย Again. โ€œOff that piece of shit that youโ€™re so hellbent on seeing the best of.โ€

My father reeled back like the words my brother spoke had physically struck him.

โ€œKevin,โ€ Mam strangled out and then quickly placed her hands on my fatherโ€™s chest. โ€œTony, breathe. Itโ€™s alright, love, just take a breath.โ€

โ€œYeah, golden boy doesnโ€™t seem so perfect now, does he?โ€ Kev taunted, looking angrier than Iโ€™d ever seen. โ€œNot when heโ€™s knocked up your daughter,

huh, Dad?โ€

โ€œWhat are youโ€ฆ?โ€ My fatherโ€™s panicked eyes flicked to me. โ€œAoife?โ€ โ€œDad, I didnโ€™t meanโ€ฆ Iโ€™m so sorry,โ€ I sobbed, hands hanging limply at

my sides. I looked at my brother and shook my head. โ€œIย hateย you.โ€

โ€œI tried to tell you about him,โ€ Kev continued to shout, aiming his pain at our father now. โ€œBut you wouldnโ€™t be told. Iย warnedย you about what kind of person he was, but you insisted on hiring him โ€“ on treating him like the son you always wanted but never got with me!โ€

โ€œKevin.โ€

โ€œWell, congrats, Dad,โ€ Kev croaked out, voice breaking. โ€œYou finally got your wish. Youโ€™ll have a grandchild off him soon enough that will cement him deeper into the family. Youโ€™ll finally have the son you always wanted.โ€

Unable to handle another second of watching my world fall around me, I bolted from the kitchen, ignoring my motherโ€™s pleading and fatherโ€™s shouting, as I made a beeline for the front door, desperate to escape.

โ€œAoife,โ€ Kev called out, hurrying after me. โ€œWait up.โ€œ

โ€œDonโ€™t touch me,โ€ I spat, yanking my arm free from his hold, and I glared up at him. โ€œAnd donโ€™tย everย speak to me again.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€ my brother began to say, but then jutted his chin out defiantly and hissed, โ€œHe had to know.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t your place to tell him,โ€ I countered shakily, feeling the ultimate form of betrayal at the hands of the person whoโ€™d shared a womb with me. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t your place to tell anyone. It was mine, and you took that choice away from me.โ€

Regret flickered in his eyes.

โ€œYouโ€™re so jealous of Joeyโ€™s relationship with Dad that you threw your own twin under the bus to get one up on him.โ€

โ€œAoife.โ€

โ€œYou literally destroyed my entire world, Kevin.โ€ I shook my head, not bothering to wipe the tears from my cheeks. Fresh ones would just take their place. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€ He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. โ€œLook, at least itโ€™s out in the open now. If anything, I did you a favor.โ€

โ€œYou told myย fatherย before I could,โ€ I choked out, chest heaving. โ€œYou told Paul who told myย babyโ€™sย father before I could.โ€

Confusion filled his eyes. โ€œJoey didnโ€™t know?โ€ I shook my head.

โ€œI didnโ€™t know that.โ€ Sighing heavily, he reached for my hand. โ€œShit,

Aoif, I didnโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I held a hand up and warned him off. โ€œStay back.โ€ โ€œAoife.โ€

โ€œI mean it,โ€ I snapped. โ€œIโ€™m ashamed to call you my brother.โ€

โ€œAnd you think Iโ€™mย proudย to call you my sister?โ€ he shouted back, cheeks reddening. โ€œProud to have a slut in the family? Youโ€™re the embarrassment here, Aoife. Youโ€™re the one bringing down the tone. Youโ€™re the screw-up, not me,โ€ he tossed out defensively. โ€œItโ€™s not my fault that you didnโ€™t tell the guy. Heโ€™s the first one you shouldโ€™ve told.โ€

โ€œNot yourย fault?โ€ I gaped at him. โ€œThis isย allย your fault. You might have the brains when it comes to school, but youโ€™re a cruel, spoilt, jealous bastard,

without a shred of heart, and I will never forgive you for this. Do you hear me, Kevin? I willย neverย forgive you!โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ he shot back defensively, tone thick with emotion. โ€œSee if I care.โ€

โ€œOh, youโ€™ll care, you spiteful little shit,โ€ I growled, backing up the garden path towards our gate. โ€œAnd youโ€™ll be sorry.โ€

โ€œWhat are you going to do?โ€ he called after me. โ€œSet your guard dog on me?ย Again?โ€

โ€œI pulled him off you the last time,โ€ came my heated reply. โ€œDonโ€™t think Iโ€™ll make that mistake twice.โ€

โ€œAnd I let him off the hook the last time,โ€ my brother reminded me. โ€œDonโ€™t think Iโ€™ll make that mistake twice.โ€

โ€œNo, Kev, I wonโ€™t set my boyfriend on you,โ€ I hissed, shoving the gate open. โ€œBecause, unlike you, I donโ€™t need anyone to fight my battles for me.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œIt means that youโ€™ve never fought your own battles a day in your damn life,โ€ I practically screamed. โ€œYouโ€™re too busy hiding behind Mamโ€™s skirt.โ€

โ€œBullshit.โ€

โ€œOh, you think youโ€™ve just sailed through secondary school based on your stellar personality alone?โ€ I demanded. โ€œNo, asshole, youโ€™ve been wrapped in bubble wrap for six years, becauseย Iโ€™veย had your back the entire time.โ€

โ€œI never asked you to do that for me.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t have to ask me,โ€ I bit out. โ€œThatโ€™s whatย familyย does. They look out for each other. They protect each other. They have each otherโ€™s backs.โ€ I shrugged my shoulders. โ€œOr at least, thatโ€™s what I thought we were, but clearly, I was wrong.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re overreacting here,โ€ he muttered, rubbing his jaw.

โ€œNo,ย youโ€™reย underestimating the damage youโ€™ve done to our relationship,โ€ I corrected, pointing a finger at him. โ€œIโ€™m done having your back, Kev. Iโ€™m done being your sister. It ends today. And good luck getting Mam back on side now that sheโ€™s finally seen you for what you truly are โ€“ a fucking brat!โ€

โ€œI was upset,โ€ he tried to defend himself, throwing his hands up. โ€œYou and Mam were keeping secrets, and spending so much time togetherโ€”โ€

โ€œAnd poor little Kev spat the dummy because he wasnโ€™t getting his mammyโ€™s undivided attention like heโ€™s used to getting every second of the day since we were born,โ€ I filled in, tone laced with sarcasm. โ€œWell, boo- fucking-hoo, you sap. So, Mam gave me a sliver of attention for once after youโ€™ve spent eighteen years monopolizing her time. Get the hell over yourself!โ€

โ€œLike your boyfriend has done withย ourย father?โ€

โ€œIf you have a problem with Dadโ€™s relationship with Joey, then take it up with Dad,โ€ I shot back, wholly enraged. โ€œDonโ€™t ruinย myย life because you want to put a wedge between them.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I was trying to do.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™sย exactlyย what you were trying to do,โ€ I snapped. โ€œAnd yeah, you might have achieved it, but you also lost yourself a sister in the process.โ€

โ€œAoife, come on,โ€ he called after me. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, okay?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t come too close, Kev,โ€ I called over my shoulder, as I stormed down the footpath away from my brother. โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t want the neighbors seeing you associating with the familyย slut.โ€

โ€œWhat did you say to her, ya little bollox?โ€ Rushing into the garden, with Mam hot on his heels, Dad called after me, โ€œAoife, get back here in your condition.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t go running off like this,โ€ Mam added. โ€œCome back inside, love.

Your fatherโ€™s not going to shout at you.โ€

โ€œLeave me alone!โ€ I screamed, breaking into a run, as I raced down the footpath, needing to get as far away from my family as possible.

Because I couldnโ€™t do this. It was too much.

I couldnโ€™t handle the emotions rushing through me.

I was too close to my breaking point to take another hit.

However, when I rounded the corner at the end of my street, and smacked into a hard chest, thatโ€™s exactly what happened.

โ€œHoly shit.โ€ A familiar pair of hands came around me, moving to grip my shoulders and steady me. โ€œMolloy.โ€ Joey was breathing hard and fast, clearly having sprinted all the way over here from school. โ€œThe fuck are you running off to?โ€

I couldnโ€™t answer him because I had no idea where I had intended to go. I only knew that he wasย exactlyย where I needed him to be.

โ€œJoe.โ€ Unable to shoulder this crippling weight by myself for a second longer, I slumped against him, needing to feel his arms around me in this moment more than I needed my next breath. โ€œJoe.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€ His arms came around me, tight and full of comfort, as he pulled me into his embrace. โ€œShh. Itโ€™s okay.โ€

Burying my face in the front of his school jumper, I clutched the fabric at his back, and let him take my weight, taking every ounce of support he was offering me. Because I needed his support. I neededย him.

โ€œIโ€™ve got you, Molloy.โ€ โ€œPlease donโ€™t hate me.โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry for not telling you sooner,โ€ I cried. โ€œFor you having to find out like you did.โ€œ

โ€œListen to me.โ€ With his hands on my cheeks, and his fingers tangled in my hair, he forced me to look up at him. โ€œDonโ€™t apologize. I get it, okay?โ€

โ€œYou get it?โ€

โ€œI get it.โ€ He nodded slowly. โ€œWhy you didnโ€™t tell me. What you were trying to do. I donโ€™t like it, but I get it.โ€ He exhaled a shaky breath. โ€œIโ€™m just so fucking sorry for being the kind of person that you felt you needed to protect, when it should have been the other way around.โ€

Unable to tear my eyes away, I watched as Joey absorbed the brunt of the metaphorical axe that I had just swung down on his neck โ€“ on his entire world.

I could see it all in his eyes.

Everything he wanted to say, everythingย Iย wanted to say, but never would. All of the fear.

The regret.

The hurt.

The guilt.

Expelling a pained breath, Joey lowered his face to mine and gently rested his brow against mine. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, Molloy.โ€

Tears spilled down my cheeks, and my breath came in short puffs, as I reached up and covered his hands with mine. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, too, Joe.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know what to say here,โ€ he admitted in a hoarse tone. โ€œIโ€™m scared to fucking death right now, so I can only imagine how youโ€™ve been feeling. But Iโ€™m here, okay?โ€ He shrugged his shoulders helplessly. โ€œIโ€™m here and Iโ€™m going nowhere.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ He nodded slowly, eyes locked on mine. โ€œI wonโ€™t run.โ€ โ€œYou swear?โ€

โ€œI swear,โ€ Joey replied, tone laced with sincerity. โ€œI wonโ€™t leave you alone in this.โ€

โ€œThen thatโ€™s all you need to say,โ€ I sobbed, nuzzling his cheek with mine. โ€œBecause thatโ€™s all I need to know.โ€
