Chapter no 54 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€ŒTHE BIRDS, THE BEES, AND THE DUB

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

JOEY

โ€œWHAT AREย you doing in my room?โ€ Shannon asked when she walked into her bedroom at lunchtime on Wednesday afternoon, breaking the rare silence I was soaking in, with everyone else out of the house.

โ€œSean pissed on my bed,โ€ I explained, exhaling a cloud of smoke, as I stared up at her bedroom ceiling, coming down from my high. โ€œMy sheets are in the wash.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Dropping her school bag on her bedroom floor, she kicked off her shoes and walked over to her bed. โ€œPush over.โ€

Obliging, I shifted closer to the wall and rested an arm behind my head as she flopped down on her small single bed beside me. โ€œItโ€™s lunchtime, Shan. What are ya doing home from school?โ€

โ€œLike you can talk.โ€ Digging me in the side with her skinny elbow, she mimicked, โ€œItโ€™s lunchtime, Joey. What are you doing home?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m in the dog house.โ€ โ€œWith Aoife?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œIs that weed?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€

โ€œAre you lying.โ€

Inhaling another deep drag of my smoke, I held it there for a long moment before exhaling slowly. โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œStoner.โ€ โ€œSlacker.โ€

โ€œSo, what did you do?โ€ she asked, batting a cloud of smoke away. โ€œTo get

sent to the dog house?โ€ She sucked in a sharp breath before I could answer and hissed, โ€œPlease tell me you didnโ€™t cheat on her? Because that girl is amazing and you need to marry her.โ€

โ€œThe fuck?โ€ I narrowed my eyes and exhaled a cloud of smoke. โ€œNo, Jesus, I didnโ€™t cheat on her. I donโ€™t cheat, Shan.โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€ She shrugged sheepishly. โ€œItโ€™s justโ€ฆwell, when I was at BCS, I used to hear a lot of the girls in the bathroom talking about you and youโ€™re, uh, well, your bedroom skills.โ€

โ€œMy bedroom skills,โ€ I snorted. โ€œJesus Christ. Girls are fucked up.โ€

โ€œGirlsย areย fucked up,โ€ my little sister wholeheartedly agreed. โ€œI donโ€™t understand them at all.โ€

โ€œYou know, they say fellas talk, but itโ€™s the other way around,โ€ I complained. โ€œGirls talk.โ€ I twisted my head to find her staring wide-eyed back at me. โ€œGirls do a lot of fucking talking, Shan.โ€

โ€œYeah, I know,โ€ she sighed.

โ€œYou know, most of what they say is pure bullshit,โ€ I decided to add, feeling salty. โ€œIโ€™ve only been in one girlโ€™s bedroom.โ€

Her eyes widened. โ€œSo, youโ€™ve only been with one girl?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve only been in one girlโ€™s bedroom,โ€ I doubled down and repeated. โ€œJoey.โ€ My sister narrowed her eyes. โ€œThatโ€™s not the same thing.โ€

โ€œLike you can talk,โ€ I shot back, giving her back her earlier words. โ€œHowโ€™d you get on in Mister Rugbyโ€™s bedroom the other week? Iโ€™m guessing this little day trip home from school has something to do with him?โ€

โ€œWh-what?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t pull that shy card on me,โ€ I chuckled. โ€œI can read ya like a book.โ€

She nestled under my arm and sighed heavily. โ€œI didnโ€™t come home early because of Johnny.โ€

I stiffened. โ€œThen who?โ€ โ€œBella Wilkinson.โ€ โ€œWhat did she do?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter,โ€ Shannon replied, shaking her head. โ€œForget it.โ€ Frowning, I turned to look at her. โ€œDid she hurt you?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œCall you names or something?โ€ She stiffened.

โ€œSo, she called you names?โ€

She nodded.

โ€œWhat did she call you?โ€

โ€œThe usual,โ€ she admitted quietly. โ€œAnd then she made fun of me for coming from Elkโ€™s Terrace.โ€

โ€œFucking bitch,โ€ I growled, taking another deep drag before sitting up, feeling my temper rise. โ€œYou get why these girls target you, donโ€™t ya?โ€

โ€œBecause they hate me.โ€

โ€œBecause theyโ€™re threatened by you,โ€ I corrected. โ€œBecause goodness shines out of you, and theyโ€™re throwing shit to take that shine away. Donโ€™t let them win, Shan.โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s BCS going for you?โ€ she asked, clearly trying to take the limelight off herself by steering the conversation towards me.

โ€œSchool is school, Shan,โ€ I replied, staring out the window. โ€œSame shit, different day.โ€

โ€œYou know the real reason Iโ€™m home in the middle of the day,โ€ she replied. โ€œWhatโ€™s your real reason, Joe?โ€

โ€œAlready told ya.โ€ I shrugged and took another drag of my smoke. โ€œIโ€™m in the dog house.โ€

โ€œWhy do I feel like thatโ€™s not true?โ€

I shrugged. โ€œI just couldnโ€™t be bothered sticking around.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you talk to me, Joe?โ€ she asked then, tone laced with sadness. โ€œIโ€™m always confiding in you, but you never do the same.โ€

Because I canโ€™t. Because youโ€™d crumble. Because I need to protect you.ย โ€œYou know me, kid,โ€ I replied, climbing off her bed, and moving for the window. I turned back and offered her a smile. โ€œIโ€™m bulletproof.โ€

She stared back at me, uncertain, for a long moment before whispering, โ€œIf I tell you something, do you promise not to get mad?โ€

Pushing her window open, I took another drag of my smoke before flicking the butt away. โ€œDepends.โ€

โ€œPromise me, Joe.โ€ โ€œOkay, I promise.โ€

Chewing on her bottom lip, my baby sister squirmed in discomfort before throwing her hands up and blurting out, โ€œI kissed Johnny Kavanagh.โ€

Well, shit.

I wasnโ€™t expecting that.

My brows shot up in surprise. โ€œYou kissedโ€ฆโ€

โ€œJohnny Kavanagh,โ€ she filled in with a nod, cheeks reddening.

โ€œOkay,โ€ I replied slowly, as I tried to navigate this new fucking territory that my baby sister had unceremoniously thrown me into. This wasnโ€™t a conversation she needed to be having with her older brother. This was an older sister conversation. Or a mother and daughter conversation. Instead, she was stuck with me.ย Fuck. My. Life. I could feel my buzz deserting me at a rapid rate. โ€œWas that all you did with him?โ€

Please say yes.

Please Jesus, donโ€™t tell me anything else.

โ€œYes,โ€ she strangled out, nodding eagerly. โ€œWhen?โ€

โ€œMonday night. At his house.โ€

โ€œAt his house?โ€ I arched a brow. โ€œWhere in his house, exactly?โ€ โ€œHis bedroom.โ€

Now both my brows rose along with my blood pressure. โ€œHis bedroom?โ€

โ€œBut he didnโ€™t kiss me back,โ€ she blurted, wringing her hands together. โ€œAnd I feel so embarrassed about the whole thing, Joe.โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t he kiss you back?โ€

โ€œHe said that it wouldnโ€™t be fair to start anything up with me when heโ€™s leaving soon.โ€ She chewed on her lip, looking very young and uncertain. โ€œBut then he came over after school yesterday.โ€

โ€œHe came over.โ€ My eyes widened. โ€œHere. To this house.โ€ She nodded. โ€œHe helped me with my homework.โ€

โ€œDid anything happen?โ€

โ€œWe hugged.โ€

I fought back the laugh that was threatening to escape me. โ€œYou hugged.โ€ โ€œUh-huh.โ€

Desperately trying to keep a straight face, I asked, โ€œWas it a good hug?โ€

She sighed wistfully and clutched her chest. โ€œIt was theย bestย hug Iโ€™ve ever had.โ€

Now, I did laugh. โ€œJoey!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€ Clearing my throat, I scrubbed my face with my hand and tried again. โ€œSo, the Dub gives good hugs, yeah?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ She gave another uncertain nod and shrugged helplessly. โ€œBut I wanted it to be more than just a hug because I justโ€ฆ I really like him, Joe. And then, today at lunch, he literally punched Bellaโ€™s boyfriend in the face because she was saying those mean things about me. But that scares me because you know how I feel about violence, but Iโ€™m not scared of him like that, you know? Heโ€™s a good person. I mean he’s a really,ย reallyย good person. Excellent, in fact. I can tell. And I like him, Joe. Iย likeย him so much itโ€™s hard

to breathe when heโ€™s near me. But I justโ€ฆ and he wonโ€™tโ€ฆ and I donโ€™tโ€ฆ oh god,ย helpย me!โ€

Jesus, I needed another smoke for this.

โ€œYou couldnโ€™t have taken a shine to a lad from around here?โ€ Shaking my head, I sank back down on her bed and sighed. โ€œYou had to pick the Irish international?โ€

She squirmed in discomfort. โ€œIโ€™m sorry?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be sorry, Shan,โ€ I chuckled, rubbing my jaw. โ€œYou canโ€™t help who you like. And for what itโ€™s worth, I reckon he likes you too, kid.โ€

โ€œWhat do I do, Joe?โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re askingย me?โ€ โ€œWho else can I ask?โ€

โ€œFuck.โ€ Pressing my fingers to my temples, I tried to think up the appropriate answer to give her in this moment. โ€œGive me a second to think about this.โ€

โ€œWhat would you do if you were me?โ€ Yeah, I wasnโ€™t going to tell her what Iโ€™d do.

โ€œOr Aoife? What would she do in this position?โ€

And Iย definitelyย wasnโ€™t going to tell her what Molloy would do.

โ€œJust take your time. Be his friend and just let whatever happens come naturally,โ€ I finally settled on, knowing it was lame as fuck, but unwilling to give my baby sister tips on how to seduce a fella. โ€œIf it happens, it happens, and if it doesnโ€™t, then thatโ€™s okay, too. And please, for the love of Christ, donโ€™t ask Aoife for advice,โ€ I added, shuddering at the thought of the pointers

Molloy would be only too happy to give her. โ€œYouโ€™re only sixteen, Shan. This is all new to you. You need to navigate this thing with Kavanagh at your own pace and nobody elseโ€™s.โ€

โ€œI can do that,โ€ she whispered, looking up at me like I was giving her some sacred advice. โ€œThanks, Joe.โ€

โ€œAnytime.โ€

โ€œCan I ask you something else?โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œHow old were you?โ€ She grimaced before adding, โ€œWhen you firstโ€ฆyou

know?โ€

I eyed her warily. โ€œDo we need to have the talk?โ€ Her eyes widened. โ€œThe talk?โ€

โ€œThe talk,โ€ I confirmed grimly. โ€œYouโ€™ve had the talk, right?โ€

โ€œI, ahโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMamโ€™s had the talk with you, hasnโ€™t she?โ€ I pressed, palms sweating. โ€œNo, did she have the talk with you?โ€

โ€œFuck no, I learned along the way,โ€ I strangled out.

โ€œOh.โ€ Her cheeks flamed. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t do that, though,โ€ I added after a beat. โ€œDonโ€™t learn on the job.โ€ โ€œThe job?โ€

โ€œYou know what I mean.โ€

โ€œUh.โ€ Her face flamed. โ€œI really donโ€™t.โ€

Jesus Christ.ย โ€œWell, you know how it all works, donโ€™t you?โ€ I asked and then shifted in discomfort. โ€œSex and intimacy, and birth control and all that

shit?โ€

โ€œUh, yeah?โ€ Exhaling a shaky breath, she nodded uncertainly. โ€œI know enough.โ€

โ€œYou do?โ€

โ€œI mean, I think I do?โ€

That meant she definitely didnโ€™t.

Aw fuck.

โ€œDo you, ahโ€ฆโ€ I let my voice trail off, and scratched my jaw, buying myself a few extra seconds before forcing out the words, โ€œDo you need to ask me anything about it?โ€

โ€œLike what?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t fucking know, Shan,โ€ I choked out. โ€œAdvice? You have three minutes to ask whatever the fuck you want and then Iโ€™m out of here and this conversation will never again be repeated.โ€

โ€œIs it like the movies?โ€ She squirmed in discomfort. โ€œSex? Does it hurt?โ€

โ€œYeah, the first time can hurt for a girl,โ€ I replied, resisting the urge to crawl into the corner of her room and rock. โ€œBut it shouldnโ€™t hurt after that, and if it does, heโ€™s doing it wrong.โ€

โ€œDo we really bleed?โ€

โ€œUh, yeah, girls can bleed the first time, but it doesnโ€™t happen to every girl.โ€

โ€œWhy not?โ€

Fuck if I knew. โ€œBecause itโ€™s different for everyone.โ€ โ€œWhat about guys? Does it hurt for guys their first time?โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s more of matter of trying to keep the head.โ€ โ€œTheย head?โ€

โ€œCalm,โ€ I corrected with a grimace. โ€œItโ€™s a matter of keeping calm and in

control.โ€

โ€œWhat happens if you canโ€™t stay calm?โ€ โ€œThen itโ€™s over before it starts.โ€

โ€œOver?โ€

โ€œOver,โ€ I confirmed grimly. โ€œAs in the showโ€™s over.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Her cheeks reddened. โ€œWhat if his, you know, is too big? What if it doesnโ€™t fit in, um, well, you know?โ€

โ€œIt fits.โ€ I dropped my head in my hands and groaned. โ€œItโ€™s always fits.โ€ โ€œBut how?โ€

โ€œMagic.โ€

โ€œJoey.โ€

โ€œIt just fucking fits, Shan,โ€ I replied. โ€œOnce the girl is relaxed and not feeling anxious or pressured โ€“โ€œ I paused to give her a hard look. โ€œNobodyโ€™s pressuring you, right?โ€

โ€œOh god, no,โ€ she hurried to say. โ€œIโ€™m justโ€ฆcurious.โ€

โ€œOkay then. Good. Thatโ€™s good to hear.โ€ Repressing a shudder, I quickly continued. โ€œJesus, I canโ€™t believe these words are coming out of my mouth, but foreplay helps a lot.โ€

โ€œForeplay?โ€

โ€œYeah, Shan.โ€

โ€œWhat kind of foreplay?โ€

โ€œWell, not hugging thatโ€™s for fucking sure.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ She blushed. โ€œSo, you mean like kissing and stuff?โ€

โ€œAnd stuff,โ€ I replied, feeling like I was seconds away from throwing myself out of her bedroom window.

โ€œLike touching?โ€

โ€œYeah, like touching and tasting andโ€ฆugh, you know what?โ€ Slapping my hands on my knees, I stood up and paced the floor. โ€œYou should stick to the hugging. Hugging is perfect. Hugging is plenty close enough until youโ€™re twenty.โ€

โ€œHow old were you, Joe? When you firstโ€ฆโ€ โ€œToo young.โ€

โ€œHow young?โ€

โ€œYounger than you.โ€

Her eyes widened and she choked out a surprised cough. โ€œJoe.โ€ I grimaced. โ€œYeah, I know.โ€

โ€œSoโ€ฆ how was your first time?โ€

โ€œTerrible,โ€ I admitted quietly. โ€œI wasnโ€™t ready.โ€

My baby sisterโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œThen whyโ€™d you go through with it?โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ I opened my mouth to respond, but words failed me. โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ Shaking my head, I racked my brain for the words I needed to answer her but came up empty.

Concern filled her blue eyes. โ€œJoe?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, Shan.โ€ Shoulders slumping, I sank down on the bed beside my sister and rested my elbows on my thighs. โ€œI think Iโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou think you what, Joe?โ€

โ€œI think I wasโ€ฆโ€ Blowing out a strained breath, I wrestled with my hazed memories, trying to make sense of a night that had never made sense to me. โ€œI think I wasnโ€™t in my own body, if that makes sense?โ€

โ€œIn what way?โ€

โ€œI was high as a kite that night, and I mean, I can sort of remember it happening,โ€ I admitted, cracking my knuckles together. โ€œBut I donโ€™t remember how or why it happened.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t understand,โ€ she whispered, turning her body to face me. โ€œAre you saying youโ€ฆโ€ Swallowing deeply, my baby sister reached for my hand and squeezed. โ€œDid you not want it to happen, Joe?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, Shan,โ€ I forced myself to admit out loud for the first time. โ€œI mean, I know that I liked the girl it happened with, and I know that I wasnโ€™t upset about it afterwards, but I justย donโ€™tย rememberย howย it happened.โ€

โ€œJoe.โ€ Her hand tightened around mine. โ€œThat kind of sounds like you didnโ€™t consent.โ€

โ€œMaybe,โ€ I muttered, scratching my head. โ€œBut I must have enjoyed it because I went back there with her multiple times over the years. She was actually aย friendย type person of mine back in the day.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter if you did it a thousand times with a thousand different girls,โ€ Shannon croaked out. โ€œYou both need to consent every time, Joe.โ€

โ€œJesus,โ€ I muttered, shaking my head. โ€œHow did this conversation get so deep?โ€

โ€œDoes Aoife know?โ€

โ€œDoes Aoife know what?โ€

โ€œAbout what happened to you on your first timeโ€ฆโ€œ

โ€œNo, because nothing happened to me, Shannon,โ€ I was quick to point out, quickly shutting down the conversation before it went to a place that my mind had no intention of visiting. โ€œI got high, I got fucked, I got over it, and then, when I got high again, I got fucked some more. Rince and repeat. That was my mantra. So yeah, I was way too young and way too fucking reckless with my body,โ€ I admitted, giving her a hard look. โ€œDonโ€™t make my mistakes, Shan. Donโ€™t give yourself away to the first person who shows you an ounce of affection. Just take your time. I promise the right person is worth holding out for, okay?โ€

โ€œJoe, I really feel like you werenโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t, okay?โ€ Annoyed, I stood up and moved for her door. โ€œDonโ€™t make me a victim, Shan. Itโ€™s not the narrative of my story.โ€

โ€œDo you wish Aoife was your first?โ€ she thankfully changed the subject by asking.

โ€œEvery day,โ€ I admitted with a shrug. โ€œItโ€™s fucking miserable knowing that I threw something around that means so much with the right person. Itโ€™s even worse knowing that she knows it.โ€

โ€œSo, she waited for you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not talking about Aoife, Shan,โ€ I replied. โ€œA lad has limits, ya know.

Ask what you want about my sex life, but not my girlfriendโ€™s, okay?โ€ โ€œYou really love her, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not just about love. Itโ€™s about respect.โ€

โ€œAnd compatibility.โ€ โ€œAnd friendship.โ€

โ€œAnd loyalty.โ€ โ€œExactly.โ€

โ€œWow,โ€ Shannon breathed. โ€œYouโ€™re very sweet under that prickly

exterior, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m hungry under this prickly exterior,โ€ I muttered, desperate to get away from the topic of the birds and the bees. โ€œWant to make your favorite brother something to eat before he has to go to work?โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Sighing heavily, she climbed off her bed and walked right up to me, wrapping her skinny arms around my waist. โ€œBut only because youย areย my favorite brother.โ€
