Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

JOEY

WITH THE MOTHERย of all headaches, I slowly blinked awake. I felt fucking horrified as I slowly registered the fact that I was face-down in a strangerโ€™s floral-patterned bedsheets, with no recollection of how Iโ€™d gotten there.

Panic stricken, I quickly sprung up on my elbows and looked down, relieved to find myself fully clothed in my school uniform. I even had my shoes on.

Cracking my head off a familiar bunkbed bar above me, I slowly realized that I was in my own bed, but the sheets had been changed โ€“ by Shannon, no doubt.

โ€œSo, you live to tell another tale,โ€ Podge said flatly, as he sat on the edge of the mattress, with an empty water bottle in hand. โ€œWhat the fuck, Joey? I thought you got a handle on this?โ€

โ€œWhy are you here?โ€ I muttered, gingerly pulling myself into a sitting position, as the room felt like it was floating around me. Pushing my damp hair out of my eyes, I asked, โ€œWhy am I here?โ€

โ€œI brought you here,โ€ he replied. โ€œYou passed out in the toilets at school this afternoon, asshole. Aoife found you and came and got me. Youโ€™re damn

lucky that Nyhan didnโ€™t catch you, or youโ€™d be out on your ass.โ€

โ€œThis afternoon?โ€ Confusion echoed through my mind, and my heart gunned in my chest. โ€œWhat time is it?โ€ I shook my head. โ€œWhereโ€™s Aoife?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s after two.โ€ โ€œIn the afternoon?โ€

โ€œNo, lad, in the middle of the night.โ€ Podge sighed heavily. โ€œYouโ€™ve been out for ten hours, Joey. So again, and I canโ€™t stress this enough; what theย fuck?โ€

Jesus Christ.

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ Climbing unsteadily to my feet, I pushed my damp hair back from my face once more. โ€œWhyโ€™s my hair wet?โ€

โ€œI had to wake you somehow,โ€ he defended, throwing the empty water bottle at my head. I didnโ€™t bother to duck, choosing to let the plastic smack me upside the head. โ€œYouโ€™ve been out for so long; I was starting to think that you might be dead.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, Iโ€™m clearly not dead.โ€

โ€œThis time,โ€ he shot back, running a hand through his hair. โ€œJesus Christ, how long has it been going on again?โ€

โ€œIt was just a one-off.โ€ โ€œBullshit.โ€

โ€œLeave it out, Podge,โ€ I muttered. โ€œI fucked up. I get it. I donโ€™t need a

goddamn lecture.โ€

โ€œGoing by the look on Aoifeโ€™s face, and the sheer volume of tears she spilled, you did more than just fuck up this time.โ€

I tensed, on edge. โ€œWhat does that mean?โ€

โ€œLike you give a shit about anything other than what goes up your goddamn nose.โ€

โ€œWhat does thatย mean, Podge?โ€

โ€œIt means you completely fucked it with your girlfriend,โ€ he whisper- hissed, rising to his feet. โ€œI donโ€™t know what you did to her, or what the fuck you said, but I have never seen devastation like that.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Panicked, I grabbed my phone, only to find zero notifications from Molloy. I quickly dialed her number but was sent straight to voicemail. โ€œJesus Christ, what did I do?โ€

He folded his arms across his chest and gave me a hard look. โ€œYou tell me.โ€

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be asking you if I fuckingย knew,โ€ I snarled, losing my cool now, as I paced the room. โ€œYou said she was crying?โ€ I looked to him, panicked. โ€œDid Iย hurtย her?โ€

He stared at me for a long time before shaking his head in resignation. โ€œNo, Joe, you didnโ€™t hurt her like that. You never laid a finger on her, lad, and you never would, so relax.โ€

Heaving out a shuddering breath, I sagged against my bedroom wall and took a minute to regather my composure. โ€œFuck.โ€

โ€œYou care about her,โ€ Podge stated, watching me carefully. โ€œMore than anything or anyone you have ever allowed yourself to care about. Iโ€™ve seen it โ€“ the shift in you, and so has Alec. The change. Theย hopefulnessย she brings out in you. Hell, the whole fucking world can see how good that girl is for you, man. But youโ€™re so determined to self-destruct that youโ€™re not looking at

what youโ€™re doing to her.โ€ He shook his head before adding, โ€œIf you donโ€™t care about yourself, and itโ€™s pretty clear that you donโ€™t, then you need to think about what your actions are doing toย her.ย Because guess what, fucker? Aoife Molloy loves you. Do you hear me, you lucky son of a bitch? Hands down the best-looking girl in our school โ€“ possibly in the whole town โ€“ with the best, top-quality banter lovesย you.โ€

โ€œSound more surprised, why donโ€™t ya?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not surprised,โ€ he shot back, without hesitation. โ€œIโ€™ve seen plenty of the dolls youโ€™ve pulled over the years. Iโ€™m not insecure enough to deny that youโ€™re a good-looking son of a bitch.โ€ He shrugged. โ€œYouโ€™re both beautiful. It makes sense for her to be with you.โ€

โ€œYou know, Iโ€™m not sure I like where this conversation is heading,โ€ I warned. โ€œBecause if this is the part where you tell me that youโ€™re attracted to my girlfriend, Iโ€™m going to be really fucking pissed, and if you tell me that youโ€™re attracted to me, then Iโ€™m going to be really fucking traumatized.โ€

โ€œOfย course, Iโ€™m attracted to your girl,โ€ Podge shot back. โ€œAs is every other lad in our school.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I nodded to myself. โ€œIโ€™m pissed.โ€

โ€œGood looks aside, youโ€™re a fucking trainwreck to deal with,โ€ he argued. โ€œAnd I should know. Iโ€™ve spent the last fourteen years watching you derail, but Iโ€™ve stuck around for the same reason she has. Because she sees the same thing I do; a good fucking person underneath all of the bullshit. But youโ€™re blurring those lines, Joe. You crossed a line today and you need to make it right,โ€ he said, holding a finger up. โ€œI love you like a brother, I always have, but one of these days youโ€™re going to slip so far off the tracks that none of us will be able to reach you.โ€

His words cut me deep, and I found myself reacting on instinct. โ€œI donโ€™t need anyone to reach me.โ€ Rattled, I hissed, โ€œI donโ€™t need you, or her, or anyone else to help me with shit.โ€

He narrowed his eyes. โ€œKeep on behaving like this and no one will want

to.โ€

I narrowed my eyes right back. โ€œSuits me just fine.โ€

โ€œGo on, Joe; keep pushing the people that actually love you away,โ€ he

argued, tone heated and eyes laced with disappointment. โ€œKeep driving us out of your life and youโ€™re going to end up with only Shane Holland and his leeches sucking the life out of you.โ€

โ€œAre you done lecturing me?โ€ Stalking over to my bedroom door, I swung it open and glared at him. โ€œBecause you can leave now.โ€

โ€œLad, youโ€™re still off your rocker if you think my country ass is walking through your thug-infested terrace at two o clock in the morning.โ€ Flopping down on my bed, Podge readjusted my pillow behind his head and made himself comfortable. โ€œNah, youโ€™re stuck with me for the night, so you might as well get yourself reacquainted with the dog-house on the floor,โ€ he offered, yawning. โ€œBecause I have a feeling thatโ€™s where youโ€™ll be spending most of your time for the foreseeable.โ€

โ€œI should go see herโ€””

โ€œNo, you should lie your ass down before you get yourself in any more trouble,โ€ my friend commanded, throwing a pillow at me. โ€œLeave the poor girl to get a nightโ€™s sleep. You can go over there first thing in the morning.โ€

Relenting, I dropped down on the floor and covered my face with my arm. โ€œFuck.โ€

โ€œDo you want to know something?โ€

โ€œIf itโ€™s anything to do with how much of a shitty person I am, then no, lad,โ€ I muttered. โ€œIโ€™m already fully aware.โ€

โ€œCharlie Monaghan tried it on with Aoife at school today.โ€

โ€œThe fuck?โ€ I lifted my arm off my face to gape up at him. โ€œAnd you know this how?โ€

โ€œHeard it from Rambo who heard it from Becca.โ€ โ€œWhat did he say?โ€

โ€œWhat am I, a mind reader? I told you that I heard it from Rambo who

heard it from Rebecca. Iโ€™m not tele-fucking-pathic, lad.โ€ โ€œThat little shit-bag.โ€

โ€œStuck it to her, apparently,โ€ Podge chuckled. โ€œSo, it sounds to me like you need to get your head out of your hole and up your game if you want to hold onto that girl.โ€

โ€œSounds to me like I need to break Charlie Monaghanโ€™s fucking nose.โ€ โ€œYeah,โ€ my best friend chuckled. โ€œThat, too.โ€
