JOEY
MANIPULATEDย into driving miles out of the way on the insinuation that I might get my dick wet afterwards, had me driving through an impressive ten-foot cast-iron gate, and up a mile-long private country lane that led to a house straight out of the films.
Seriously, in any other circumstances, I would be shot on target for trespassing on a property like this.
In fact, I half expected to see a guard of some sort jump out of the bushes with a shot gun.
I had to steel my features when I pulled up outside what I could only describe as a stately fucking mansion.
This was where Kavanaghย lived?
I looked to Molloy who was gaping at the house not unlike the way I was. โAnd I thought his friendโs house was a palace,โ she mumbled, face
pressed against the window. โHoly crap, Joe.โ
โI know, Molloy.โ
These people owned acres of land and grounds. They were sprawled out everywhere.
Christ.
After helping Kav deposit his ward onto the couch in a living room that looked like it could have been a ballroom before it had had been renovated, I stopped at the front door, unable to walk away until I addressed the elephant in the room.
โListen.โ Rubbing the back of my neck, I turned to face him. โAbout Shannon.โ
Kav seemed to straighten, as he stood in the entryway of his impressive as fuck house and inclined his chin for me to get this conversation over with. โWhat about Shannon?โ
He didnโt back down or shy away.
Instead, he just braced himself for what I had to say. โSheโs fragile,โ I heard myself tell him. โVulnerable.โ โYeah. I already guessed that.โ
โWhat Iโm trying to say here is that I appreciate you looking out for my sister. Sheโs had a hard few years, and Tommen seems like a good fit for her.โ
He gave me a clipped nod. โIt is.โ
Reluctantly impressed, I gave him a hard look, taking his measure to see if he would slip or falter.
Blue eyes stared back at me, unyielding, and unwilling to bend an inch.
Well, shit.
This fucker was going to stand his ground.
Not wanting to meddle in whatever my sister had going on with this lad, but needing to let him know that I wasnโt going to sit back and let him fuck
her over, either, I said, โSo, I guess Iโm hoping that you continue keeping an eye out for her at school. You know, make sure that no one is giving her any hassle.โ
He nodded once. โThatโs no problem.โ
โShe seems to be settling in at Tommen, and she keeps telling me that the kids are nice to her, but Iโm at BCS so Iโve no way to tell if sheโs okay or not.โ I shook my head and sighed. โAnd she never tells anyone whatโs going on in that head of hers until itโs too late.โ
โToo late?โ
โBitchy girl shit.โ I hated the feeling that I was baring my neck to this lad, but I didnโt have any other hand to play. He was the one at school with my sister. He was the one with the ability to do what I couldnโt. He was the one going around handling her bullies. He had the upper hand in this situation. โMy sister has had a target on her back since she was in nappies.โ
โJesus Christ.โ Raw, unrestrained emotion flashed in his eyes then, and in his voice, letting me know that he wasnโt quite the robot he had been programed to be. โThatโs pretty messed up.โ
โKids are cruel,โ I offered, giving him the perfect opportunity to tell me about the altercation he and Shannon had at Biddies.
โThey sure are,โ was all he offered in return. No bragging.
No pissing contests. No explanation.
Just stoic silence.
Well, shit.
โAre you going to tell me about it?โ Silence.
โCiara Maloneyโs boyfriend,โ I mused, lips twitching when he made no
move to comply. โSome fella from Tommen beat the shit out of him in town yesterday.โ
โOh?โ He shrugged noncommittally. โIs that so?โ I smirked. โYeah, it is.โ
โWell, I hope he fucked him up,โ he finally offered, folding his arms across his chest. โHeard his girlfriendโs a bitch.โ
โI heard he was in a bad way,โ I replied evenly. โBroken nose, and a few stitches.โ
โHow awful.โ Kavโs tone was dripping with disdain, his eyes void of any empathy โ or regret.
โAnyway, I just wanted you to know I appreciate that my sister has someone looking out for her when I canโt.โ
โNo problem.โ
โA friend,โ I said slowly, watching his reaction. โMy sister needs aย friend, Kavanagh. She doesnโt need to be getting her hopes up on a guy whoโll be gone come the summer.โ
Or her heart broken.
โI wonโt hurt her, Joey.โ
The sincerity in his voice, and the vulnerable look in his eyes assured me that not only was my sisterโs heart on the line here, but so was his.
Poor fucker had gone and caught himself some big old feelings.
For my sister, of all people.
Go figure.
โIย THINKย youโre right about them,โ I said when I climbed back into the driverโs seat.
โI usually am,โ Molloy mused, as she looked through the stack of cd cases in her hands. โBut indulge me anyway.โ
โThat big, overgrown fucker?โ Fastening my seatbelt, I started the car, and turned to look at her. โYeah, Iโm fairly sure heโs banging my sister.โ
โNo way?โ Throwing her head back, she laughed. โGo Shannon.โ โSheโs fifteen.โ
โOh please.โ She rolled her eyes at me. โLike youโre in the position to throw stones.โ
โExactly,โ I bit out, driving down the tree-lined lane towards the road. โWe all know what a shit-show fifteen was for me. Shannon should be learning by my mistakes, not following in my footsteps.โ
โSheโs sixteen tomorrow,โ she reminded me.
โWorse still,โ I groaned. โSixteen was another train-wreck of a year for me.โ
โHey!โ Molloy folded her arms across her chest and huffed out a breath. โI take offense to that statement.โ
โWhy?โ
โBecause I was in your life for both of those years.โ
โAh, but I didnโt get naked withย youย until seventeen,โ I reminded her, winking. โSeventeen was a far more productive year for me.โ
โNo, you didnโt get naked with me until you were seventeen,โ she agreed with a sudden bite to her tone. โBecause, if I recall correctly, you were too busy sticking your dick in most of the girls in Ballylaggin and at least fifty percent of our friendship circle at school.โ
โFunny. Because ifย Iย recall correctly,ย youย were the in that four-year relationship with one of my teammates.โ
โThree and a half years,โ she corrected with a growl. โAnd that was totally different.โ
โHow?โ
โBecause I neverย sleptย with Paul.ย Iโve only ever been withย you.โ
โYeah, and I neverย lovedย any of the girls I slept with, becauseย Iโveย only ever lovedย you.โ
โSo, I get your heart, while you get my heartย andย my virginity?โ โSounds about right.โ
โThatโs not a fair trade.โ
โTough shit.โ โJoey!โ
โWhat do you want me to say?โ I demanded in exasperation. โI canโt go back in time andย un-stick my dick in the first girl I slept with, Molloy.โ
โHow about just the first fifty?โ
โNow, youโre being ridiculous,โ I muttered, running a hand through my hair. โI havenโt been withย fiftyย girls. I donโt evenย knowย fifty girls to begin
with.โ
โWell, I can name at least ten girls from school that knowย youย on an intimate level,โ she was quick to point out. โAnd those are only the girls from BCS, Joe.โ She finally decided on a disc then, one of her older burner-CDs, labeledย JL 4 AM 1999ย in black sharpie ink,ย and popped it into the stereo.
A few seconds later,ย Joeyย from Concrete Blonde drifted from the speakers.
โTurn it off,โ I warned. โI mean it.โ
โNo, I like it, and donโt change the subject,โ she argued. โWe were talking about the fact that youโve made your way through half of the girls at school.โ
โHow did a conversation about Johnny Kavanaghโs sex life switch into a fight about our previous sex lives?โ
โYourย previous sex life, Joe,โ she corrected hotly. โMy entire sex life, past, present, and future starts and ends with you.โ
โAnd my sex life, present and future starts and ends with you.โ โBut not your past.โ
โI donโt know what to tell you, Molloy.โ
โHow about the truth?โ
โThe truth about how your mood swings are on another fucking planet?โ I bit out, jaw clenched. โJesus Christ, what isย wrongย with you lately?โ
โIt was Danielle Long, wasnโt it?โ she pushed, ignoring my very accurate assertion. โI know you slept with her.ย Multipleย times. But sheโs the one who took your virginity, isnโt she?โ
โWhy are we even talking about this?โ
โBecause I want to know.โ
โWhat does it even matter?โ I growled, knowing full well that whatever I said or didnโt say, could and would be used against me in the court of Aoife Molloy. This was a dangerous fucking conversation, one that I had deftly managed to avoid until now, and one I could never in a million years win. โThe past is in the past for a reason.โ
โYeah, I know.โ โThenย dropย it.โ โAlright. Fine.โ
โWell, alright then.โ โFine.โ
โGood,โ I replied, nodding. โGlad thatโs settled.โ
She shrugged. โYouโre still a huge whore, but whatever.โ
โReally, Aoif?โ Fresh out of patience, I flicked my attention from the windscreen to her. โYou want to get salty with me over something I canโt change?โ
โNope,โ she replied all snippy, with her nose in the air. โJust stating facts.โ
โYouโre absolutely right; I do have a past,โ I agreed, pissed off. โOne that doesnโt include you. One where, yes, I did have sex with other girls. One where Iโve made some questionable decisions. I am no fucking angel. Iโve never pretended to be.โ
โBut was it her?โ she asked, chewing on her lip, when we pulled onto Elkโs Terrace. โDanielle? Was she your first?โ
I didnโt want to answer these questions. โTell me, Joe.โ
โNo good can come from this conversation.โ
โPlease.โ
โYeah, she was my first,โ I reluctantly admitted, as I pulled onto my street and parked up outside my house. โI was young and thick, and desperate for a bit of affection.โ Killing the engine, I turned in my seat to look at her. โIt meant nothing, and I remember even less about it.โ
โSo, she had you first.โ
โAoife.โ I blew out a weary breath. โI canโt change my past.โ โWho else?โ she asked. โHow many others?โ
โNo.โ I shook my head. โIโm not doing this.โ โWhy?โ
โBecause I donโt want to,โ I snarled, losing my cool. โBecause I donโt fucking remember. In case you forgot, Iโve spent most of secondary school off my goddamn head. So, I canโt give you a number, Molloy, and I canโt give you names, because I donโt fucking remember.โ I blew out a harsh breath before adding, โIโm sorry about that, okay? I know that this must be a fucking horrible thing for you to have to hear, because if the shoe was on the other foot, and you were the one saying all of this to me, then it wouldย shredย me.โ I shook my head, feeling at a loss. โBut itโs the truth.โ
โYou were right, Joe.โ Flinching, she exhaled a shaky breath, and clutched her stomach, looking physically sick. โNo good can come from a conversation like this.โ
โItโs only been you,โ I heard myself tell her, even though I knew that no amount of damage control could repair tonight. โSince weโve been together? Since the day you put your lips on mine? Itโsย onlyย been you, Aoif.โ
โYeah, but youโve been off your head for most of our relationship.โ I watched as a tear trickled down her cheek. โAnd if you canโt remember the girls that you were with before me, then how can you be sureโโ
โBecause I am. Because I know.โ Reaching across the car, I grabbed her hand in mine, flinching when I felt the tremor rolling through her. โBecause Iโm sure about you.โ
โAnd Iโm sure about you,โ she strangled out. โBut I’ve spent most of my life watching my mother forgive my father for countless affairs.โ She shook her head when she said, โIย won’tย be that kind of person. I wonโt become her. It’s a hard limit for me.โ
โAnd you think Iโd do that to you?โ I demanded. โYou think Iโd risk our future for a cheap fuck?โ
โNo,โ she admitted, sounding pained. โItโs justโฆโ
โListen to me.โ Leaning in close, I tucked her hair behind her ear and said, โIโm not Tony, and youโre not Trish, okay? I would never do that to you,โ I promised as I cupped the side of her face with my hand, and resisted the urge to shake this sudden onslaught of irrational fear and neediness out of her. โDo ya hear me? I wouldย neverย cheat on you.โ
She reached up and covered my hand with hers, as her green eyes searched mine for a reassurance that sheโd never needed from me before.
โBecause, you see this face?โ Leaning in close, I rested my brow against hers and stroked her nose with mine. โYour face right here is the only face
Iโve been seeing since I was twelve. Because no matter how off my head Iโve been over the years, no matter how far from reality Iโve let my mind wander, I have never lost sight of this face.โ
Shivering, she exhaled a shaky breath and grabbed my face between her hands. โReally?โ
โThe only face,โ I confirmed with a small nod. โThe only girl.โ
โFuture,โ she whispered shakily, and then her lips were on mine. โYou said future, Joe.โ
โNo,โ I mumbled against her lips. โI saidย ourย future.โ
She pulled back to look at me. โYou want one of those?โ I watched her carefully. โDonโt you?โ
โWith me?โ
โWho else, Molloy?โ
She looked genuinely stumped. โBut youย neverย talk about the future.โ I shrugged. โNever used to think I had one.โ
โAnd you do now?โ
โYou sound surprised.โ
โBecause I am.โ Her eyes searched mine, as she continued to hold my face between her hands. โYou want a future with me, Joe?โ
โI know that I donโt want one without you, Molloy,โ I replied, leaning in to brush my lips against hers. โSo that narrows shit down, doesnโt it?โ
โI guess it sort of does,โ she breathed, thumbs tracing over my cheekbones. โSo, do you have any idea what this future might look like?โ
โWell, it wonโt look like a mansion in the country.โ
โI donโt care about that,โ she whispered, eyes full of urgency. โTell me, Joe.โ
โI suppose it looks a bit like us finishing out school,โ I offered with a shrug. โYouโll get into that hairdressing course in St. Johns, and Iโll take the apprenticeship at the garage with your dad.โ
โUh-huh.โ Her eyes twinkled with excitement. โKeep going.โ
Maybe the night could be saved after all.
โAnd then weโll attempt to save up for a flat,โ I said, amused by her sudden perkiness, and playing along to make her happy. โThat Iโll end up paying for because youโll blow every cent you earn on clothes and makeup โ which is nothing new there.โ
โFor real?โ she squealed, bad mood forgotten now, as she shimmied around in the passenger seat. โYou see us moving in together?โ
โDonโt get your hopes up,โ I warned. โOn an apprenticeโs wage, itโll end up being a shitty one bed apartment at the end of Elkโs Terrace, with leaky pipes, and a mouse infestation problem.โ
โPsssh.โ She waved her hand like those details were unimportant. โThatโs why plumbers and mouse traps were invented.โ She grinned at me. โWhat else does this future of ours consist of?โ
โAside from all of the wild sex weโll be having in our shitty flat?โ
โTheย constantย wild sex,โ she agreed approvingly. โOn every surface.โ โWhich weโll soon run out of because itโs so small.โ
โAnd mouse infested.โ
โAnd damp.โ
โAnd unbearable.โ She smiled. โKeep going.โ โAfter a while, weโll upgrade to a two-bed.โ
โA two-bed?โ
โYeah,โ I chuckled. โSomewhere for my sister and the boys to hide out. Otherwise, theyโll end up emotionally scarred from all of the wild sex weโll be having.โ
โOkay,โ she laughed. โSo, weโre adopting your siblings now, are we?โ โWhat can I say?โ I grinned. โItโs a matter of buy one and get four free.โ โMaybe we should just permanently evict your parents and keep the
house,โ she joked. โWeโd save a fortune in subsidized rent from the council.โ
โDonโt tempt me,โ I groaned, reluctantly smiling. โSo, now that weโve established a future with me consists of slumming it up in a flat in Ballylaggin and becoming parents at eighteen.โ
Her eyes widened. โParents?โ
โYeah.โ I nodded. โBuy me and get four kids free, remember?โ โYour siblings.โ
โWho else?โ
โRight,โ she laughed. โGood one.โ
โSo, any cold feet?โ I mused, tucking a tendril of hair behind her ear. โAny changes you want to make to our future plans, or are we all set?โ
โNo cold feet,โ she replied, burying her face in my neck, as she hugged me tightly. โI want that future with you.โ
