Chapter no 36 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒMY S I STER NEEDS A FRIEND

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

JOEY

MANIPULATEDย into driving miles out of the way on the insinuation that I might get my dick wet afterwards, had me driving through an impressive ten-foot cast-iron gate, and up a mile-long private country lane that led to a house straight out of the films.

Seriously, in any other circumstances, I would be shot on target for trespassing on a property like this.

In fact, I half expected to see a guard of some sort jump out of the bushes with a shot gun.

I had to steel my features when I pulled up outside what I could only describe as a stately fucking mansion.

This was where Kavanaghย lived?

I looked to Molloy who was gaping at the house not unlike the way I was. โ€œAnd I thought his friendโ€™s house was a palace,โ€ she mumbled, face

pressed against the window. โ€œHoly crap, Joe.โ€

โ€œI know, Molloy.โ€

These people owned acres of land and grounds. They were sprawled out everywhere.

Christ.

After helping Kav deposit his ward onto the couch in a living room that looked like it could have been a ballroom before it had had been renovated, I stopped at the front door, unable to walk away until I addressed the elephant in the room.

โ€œListen.โ€ Rubbing the back of my neck, I turned to face him. โ€œAbout Shannon.โ€

Kav seemed to straighten, as he stood in the entryway of his impressive as fuck house and inclined his chin for me to get this conversation over with. โ€œWhat about Shannon?โ€

He didnโ€™t back down or shy away.

Instead, he just braced himself for what I had to say. โ€œSheโ€™s fragile,โ€ I heard myself tell him. โ€œVulnerable.โ€ โ€œYeah. I already guessed that.โ€

โ€œWhat Iโ€™m trying to say here is that I appreciate you looking out for my sister. Sheโ€™s had a hard few years, and Tommen seems like a good fit for her.โ€

He gave me a clipped nod. โ€œIt is.โ€

Reluctantly impressed, I gave him a hard look, taking his measure to see if he would slip or falter.

Blue eyes stared back at me, unyielding, and unwilling to bend an inch.

Well, shit.

This fucker was going to stand his ground.

Not wanting to meddle in whatever my sister had going on with this lad, but needing to let him know that I wasnโ€™t going to sit back and let him fuck

her over, either, I said, โ€œSo, I guess Iโ€™m hoping that you continue keeping an eye out for her at school. You know, make sure that no one is giving her any hassle.โ€

He nodded once. โ€œThatโ€™s no problem.โ€

โ€œShe seems to be settling in at Tommen, and she keeps telling me that the kids are nice to her, but Iโ€™m at BCS so Iโ€™ve no way to tell if sheโ€™s okay or not.โ€ I shook my head and sighed. โ€œAnd she never tells anyone whatโ€™s going on in that head of hers until itโ€™s too late.โ€

โ€œToo late?โ€

โ€œBitchy girl shit.โ€ I hated the feeling that I was baring my neck to this lad, but I didnโ€™t have any other hand to play. He was the one at school with my sister. He was the one with the ability to do what I couldnโ€™t. He was the one going around handling her bullies. He had the upper hand in this situation. โ€œMy sister has had a target on her back since she was in nappies.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ.โ€ Raw, unrestrained emotion flashed in his eyes then, and in his voice, letting me know that he wasnโ€™t quite the robot he had been programed to be. โ€œThatโ€™s pretty messed up.โ€

โ€œKids are cruel,โ€ I offered, giving him the perfect opportunity to tell me about the altercation he and Shannon had at Biddies.

โ€œThey sure are,โ€ was all he offered in return. No bragging.

No pissing contests. No explanation.

Just stoic silence.

Well, shit.

โ€œAre you going to tell me about it?โ€ Silence.

โ€œCiara Maloneyโ€™s boyfriend,โ€ I mused, lips twitching when he made no

move to comply. โ€œSome fella from Tommen beat the shit out of him in town yesterday.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ He shrugged noncommittally. โ€œIs that so?โ€ I smirked. โ€œYeah, it is.โ€

โ€œWell, I hope he fucked him up,โ€ he finally offered, folding his arms across his chest. โ€œHeard his girlfriendโ€™s a bitch.โ€

โ€œI heard he was in a bad way,โ€ I replied evenly. โ€œBroken nose, and a few stitches.โ€

โ€œHow awful.โ€ Kavโ€™s tone was dripping with disdain, his eyes void of any empathy โ€“ or regret.

โ€œAnyway, I just wanted you to know I appreciate that my sister has someone looking out for her when I canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œNo problem.โ€

โ€œA friend,โ€ I said slowly, watching his reaction. โ€œMy sister needs aย friend, Kavanagh. She doesnโ€™t need to be getting her hopes up on a guy whoโ€™ll be gone come the summer.โ€

Or her heart broken.

โ€œI wonโ€™t hurt her, Joey.โ€

The sincerity in his voice, and the vulnerable look in his eyes assured me that not only was my sisterโ€™s heart on the line here, but so was his.

Poor fucker had gone and caught himself some big old feelings.

For my sister, of all people.

Go figure.

โ€œIย THINKย youโ€™re right about them,โ€ I said when I climbed back into the driverโ€™s seat.

โ€œI usually am,โ€ Molloy mused, as she looked through the stack of cd cases in her hands. โ€œBut indulge me anyway.โ€

โ€œThat big, overgrown fucker?โ€ Fastening my seatbelt, I started the car, and turned to look at her. โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m fairly sure heโ€™s banging my sister.โ€

โ€œNo way?โ€ Throwing her head back, she laughed. โ€œGo Shannon.โ€ โ€œSheโ€™s fifteen.โ€

โ€œOh please.โ€ She rolled her eyes at me. โ€œLike youโ€™re in the position to throw stones.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ I bit out, driving down the tree-lined lane towards the road. โ€œWe all know what a shit-show fifteen was for me. Shannon should be learning by my mistakes, not following in my footsteps.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s sixteen tomorrow,โ€ she reminded me.

โ€œWorse still,โ€ I groaned. โ€œSixteen was another train-wreck of a year for me.โ€

โ€œHey!โ€ Molloy folded her arms across her chest and huffed out a breath. โ€œI take offense to that statement.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause I was in your life for both of those years.โ€

โ€œAh, but I didnโ€™t get naked withย youย until seventeen,โ€ I reminded her, winking. โ€œSeventeen was a far more productive year for me.โ€

โ€œNo, you didnโ€™t get naked with me until you were seventeen,โ€ she agreed with a sudden bite to her tone. โ€œBecause, if I recall correctly, you were too busy sticking your dick in most of the girls in Ballylaggin and at least fifty percent of our friendship circle at school.โ€

โ€œFunny. Because ifย Iย recall correctly,ย youย were the in that four-year relationship with one of my teammates.โ€

โ€œThree and a half years,โ€ she corrected with a growl. โ€œAnd that was totally different.โ€

โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œBecause I neverย sleptย with Paul.ย Iโ€™ve only ever been withย you.โ€

โ€œYeah, and I neverย lovedย any of the girls I slept with, becauseย Iโ€™veย only ever lovedย you.โ€

โ€œSo, I get your heart, while you get my heartย andย my virginity?โ€ โ€œSounds about right.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not a fair trade.โ€

โ€œTough shit.โ€ โ€œJoey!โ€

โ€œWhat do you want me to say?โ€ I demanded in exasperation. โ€œI canโ€™t go back in time andย un-stick my dick in the first girl I slept with, Molloy.โ€

โ€œHow about just the first fifty?โ€

โ€œNow, youโ€™re being ridiculous,โ€ I muttered, running a hand through my hair. โ€œI havenโ€™t been withย fiftyย girls. I donโ€™t evenย knowย fifty girls to begin

with.โ€

โ€œWell, I can name at least ten girls from school that knowย youย on an intimate level,โ€ she was quick to point out. โ€œAnd those are only the girls from BCS, Joe.โ€ She finally decided on a disc then, one of her older burner-CDs, labeledย JL 4 AM 1999ย in black sharpie ink,ย and popped it into the stereo.

A few seconds later,ย Joeyย from Concrete Blonde drifted from the speakers.

โ€œTurn it off,โ€ I warned. โ€œI mean it.โ€

โ€œNo, I like it, and donโ€™t change the subject,โ€ she argued. โ€œWe were talking about the fact that youโ€™ve made your way through half of the girls at school.โ€

โ€œHow did a conversation about Johnny Kavanaghโ€™s sex life switch into a fight about our previous sex lives?โ€

โ€œYourย previous sex life, Joe,โ€ she corrected hotly. โ€œMy entire sex life, past, present, and future starts and ends with you.โ€

โ€œAnd my sex life, present and future starts and ends with you.โ€ โ€œBut not your past.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know what to tell you, Molloy.โ€

โ€œHow about the truth?โ€

โ€œThe truth about how your mood swings are on another fucking planet?โ€ I bit out, jaw clenched. โ€œJesus Christ, what isย wrongย with you lately?โ€

โ€œIt was Danielle Long, wasnโ€™t it?โ€ she pushed, ignoring my very accurate assertion. โ€œI know you slept with her.ย Multipleย times. But sheโ€™s the one who took your virginity, isnโ€™t she?โ€

โ€œWhy are we even talking about this?โ€

โ€œBecause I want to know.โ€

โ€œWhat does it even matter?โ€ I growled, knowing full well that whatever I said or didnโ€™t say, could and would be used against me in the court of Aoife Molloy. This was a dangerous fucking conversation, one that I had deftly managed to avoid until now, and one I could never in a million years win. โ€œThe past is in the past for a reason.โ€

โ€œYeah, I know.โ€ โ€œThenย dropย it.โ€ โ€œAlright. Fine.โ€

โ€œWell, alright then.โ€ โ€œFine.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ I replied, nodding. โ€œGlad thatโ€™s settled.โ€

She shrugged. โ€œYouโ€™re still a huge whore, but whatever.โ€

โ€œReally, Aoif?โ€ Fresh out of patience, I flicked my attention from the windscreen to her. โ€œYou want to get salty with me over something I canโ€™t change?โ€

โ€œNope,โ€ she replied all snippy, with her nose in the air. โ€œJust stating facts.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re absolutely right; I do have a past,โ€ I agreed, pissed off. โ€œOne that doesnโ€™t include you. One where, yes, I did have sex with other girls. One where Iโ€™ve made some questionable decisions. I am no fucking angel. Iโ€™ve never pretended to be.โ€

โ€œBut was it her?โ€ she asked, chewing on her lip, when we pulled onto Elkโ€™s Terrace. โ€œDanielle? Was she your first?โ€

I didnโ€™t want to answer these questions. โ€œTell me, Joe.โ€

โ€œNo good can come from this conversation.โ€

โ€œPlease.โ€

โ€œYeah, she was my first,โ€ I reluctantly admitted, as I pulled onto my street and parked up outside my house. โ€œI was young and thick, and desperate for a bit of affection.โ€ Killing the engine, I turned in my seat to look at her. โ€œIt meant nothing, and I remember even less about it.โ€

โ€œSo, she had you first.โ€

โ€œAoife.โ€ I blew out a weary breath. โ€œI canโ€™t change my past.โ€ โ€œWho else?โ€ she asked. โ€œHow many others?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œIโ€™m not doing this.โ€ โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause I donโ€™t want to,โ€ I snarled, losing my cool. โ€œBecause I donโ€™t fucking remember. In case you forgot, Iโ€™ve spent most of secondary school off my goddamn head. So, I canโ€™t give you a number, Molloy, and I canโ€™t give you names, because I donโ€™t fucking remember.โ€ I blew out a harsh breath before adding, โ€œIโ€™m sorry about that, okay? I know that this must be a fucking horrible thing for you to have to hear, because if the shoe was on the other foot, and you were the one saying all of this to me, then it wouldย shredย me.โ€ I shook my head, feeling at a loss. โ€œBut itโ€™s the truth.โ€

โ€œYou were right, Joe.โ€ Flinching, she exhaled a shaky breath, and clutched her stomach, looking physically sick. โ€œNo good can come from a conversation like this.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s only been you,โ€œ I heard myself tell her, even though I knew that no amount of damage control could repair tonight. โ€œSince weโ€™ve been together? Since the day you put your lips on mine? Itโ€™sย onlyย been you, Aoif.โ€

โ€œYeah, but youโ€™ve been off your head for most of our relationship.โ€ I watched as a tear trickled down her cheek. โ€œAnd if you canโ€™t remember the girls that you were with before me, then how can you be sureโ€”โ€

โ€œBecause I am. Because I know.โ€ Reaching across the car, I grabbed her hand in mine, flinching when I felt the tremor rolling through her. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m sure about you.โ€

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sure about you,โ€ she strangled out. โ€œBut I’ve spent most of my life watching my mother forgive my father for countless affairs.โ€ She shook her head when she said, โ€œIย won’tย be that kind of person. I wonโ€™t become her. It’s a hard limit for me.โ€

โ€œAnd you think Iโ€™d do that to you?โ€ I demanded. โ€œYou think Iโ€™d risk our future for a cheap fuck?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ she admitted, sounding pained. โ€œItโ€™s justโ€ฆโ€

โ€œListen to me.โ€ Leaning in close, I tucked her hair behind her ear and said, โ€œIโ€™m not Tony, and youโ€™re not Trish, okay? I would never do that to you,โ€ I promised as I cupped the side of her face with my hand, and resisted the urge to shake this sudden onslaught of irrational fear and neediness out of her. โ€œDo ya hear me? I wouldย neverย cheat on you.โ€

She reached up and covered my hand with hers, as her green eyes searched mine for a reassurance that sheโ€™d never needed from me before.

โ€œBecause, you see this face?โ€ Leaning in close, I rested my brow against hers and stroked her nose with mine. โ€œYour face right here is the only face

Iโ€™ve been seeing since I was twelve. Because no matter how off my head Iโ€™ve been over the years, no matter how far from reality Iโ€™ve let my mind wander, I have never lost sight of this face.โ€

Shivering, she exhaled a shaky breath and grabbed my face between her hands. โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œThe only face,โ€ I confirmed with a small nod. โ€œThe only girl.โ€

โ€œFuture,โ€ she whispered shakily, and then her lips were on mine. โ€œYou said future, Joe.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I mumbled against her lips. โ€œI saidย ourย future.โ€

She pulled back to look at me. โ€œYou want one of those?โ€ I watched her carefully. โ€œDonโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œWith me?โ€

โ€œWho else, Molloy?โ€

She looked genuinely stumped. โ€œBut youย neverย talk about the future.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œNever used to think I had one.โ€

โ€œAnd you do now?โ€

โ€œYou sound surprised.โ€

โ€œBecause I am.โ€ Her eyes searched mine, as she continued to hold my face between her hands. โ€œYou want a future with me, Joe?โ€

โ€œI know that I donโ€™t want one without you, Molloy,โ€ I replied, leaning in to brush my lips against hers. โ€œSo that narrows shit down, doesnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œI guess it sort of does,โ€ she breathed, thumbs tracing over my cheekbones. โ€œSo, do you have any idea what this future might look like?โ€

โ€œWell, it wonโ€™t look like a mansion in the country.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care about that,โ€ she whispered, eyes full of urgency. โ€œTell me, Joe.โ€

โ€œI suppose it looks a bit like us finishing out school,โ€ I offered with a shrug. โ€œYouโ€™ll get into that hairdressing course in St. Johns, and Iโ€™ll take the apprenticeship at the garage with your dad.โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ Her eyes twinkled with excitement. โ€œKeep going.โ€

Maybe the night could be saved after all.

โ€œAnd then weโ€™ll attempt to save up for a flat,โ€ I said, amused by her sudden perkiness, and playing along to make her happy. โ€œThat Iโ€™ll end up paying for because youโ€™ll blow every cent you earn on clothes and makeup โ€“ which is nothing new there.โ€

โ€œFor real?โ€ she squealed, bad mood forgotten now, as she shimmied around in the passenger seat. โ€œYou see us moving in together?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get your hopes up,โ€ I warned. โ€œOn an apprenticeโ€™s wage, itโ€™ll end up being a shitty one bed apartment at the end of Elkโ€™s Terrace, with leaky pipes, and a mouse infestation problem.โ€

โ€œPsssh.โ€ She waved her hand like those details were unimportant. โ€œThatโ€™s why plumbers and mouse traps were invented.โ€ She grinned at me. โ€œWhat else does this future of ours consist of?โ€

โ€œAside from all of the wild sex weโ€™ll be having in our shitty flat?โ€

โ€œTheย constantย wild sex,โ€ she agreed approvingly. โ€œOn every surface.โ€ โ€œWhich weโ€™ll soon run out of because itโ€™s so small.โ€

โ€œAnd mouse infested.โ€

โ€œAnd damp.โ€

โ€œAnd unbearable.โ€ She smiled. โ€œKeep going.โ€ โ€œAfter a while, weโ€™ll upgrade to a two-bed.โ€

โ€œA two-bed?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I chuckled. โ€œSomewhere for my sister and the boys to hide out. Otherwise, theyโ€™ll end up emotionally scarred from all of the wild sex weโ€™ll be having.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ she laughed. โ€œSo, weโ€™re adopting your siblings now, are we?โ€ โ€œWhat can I say?โ€ I grinned. โ€œItโ€™s a matter of buy one and get four free.โ€ โ€œMaybe we should just permanently evict your parents and keep the

house,โ€ she joked. โ€œWeโ€™d save a fortune in subsidized rent from the council.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t tempt me,โ€ I groaned, reluctantly smiling. โ€œSo, now that weโ€™ve established a future with me consists of slumming it up in a flat in Ballylaggin and becoming parents at eighteen.โ€

Her eyes widened. โ€œParents?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I nodded. โ€œBuy me and get four kids free, remember?โ€ โ€œYour siblings.โ€

โ€œWho else?โ€

โ€œRight,โ€ she laughed. โ€œGood one.โ€

โ€œSo, any cold feet?โ€ I mused, tucking a tendril of hair behind her ear. โ€œAny changes you want to make to our future plans, or are we all set?โ€

โ€œNo cold feet,โ€ she replied, burying her face in my neck, as she hugged me tightly. โ€œI want that future with you.โ€
