Chapter no 30

Wreck & Ruin

HELL LOOKED VERY MUCHย like a hospital room.

I blinked heavy eyelids, staring at light blue walls and a white ceiling.

The IV in my arm tingled with pain when I moved my hand.

Colt was sitting next to my bedside, his head lolling to his shoulder as he slept. I thought about calling out to him to wake him up, but I didnโ€™t want to disturb him.

Cottonmouth had me doubting I could even form a word.

I slid my finger back and forth across the sheet that was covering me. My nail on the cheap fabric made a sound, causing Colt to jerk upright in sudden alertness.

We stared at one another and then Colt was out of the chair and at my side. โ€œDarlinโ€™.โ€

โ€œWater,โ€ I growled through a parched throat. โ€œPlease.โ€

He grabbed the pitcher and poured water into a plastic cup. When I had my fill, he set it aside.

I had so many questions I wasnโ€™t sure where to start. So I began with the most obvious one. โ€œHow long have I been here?โ€

โ€œBrought you in last night. They rushed you to surgery for the bullet wound in your thigh. They dug it out, transfused the fuck out of you, and here we are.โ€

I looked out my window and saw the fading sunlight.

โ€œGray? He wasโ€”โ€

โ€œFine. Heโ€™s fine. Reap and Boxer found him wrestling one of Devโ€™s men on the roof. Gray managed to slide his knife into the other one.โ€

I breathed a sigh of relief that Gray was alive.

โ€œHe feels guilty as fuck, you know. Since he was supposed to pick Dev off.โ€

โ€œNothing goes according to plan, right? Dev told me he knew about the set up. Is that true?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

I peered up at him, feeling drugged and loopy, my brain and words struggling. โ€œPiece this together for me, because I have no idea how youโ€™re not in jail and I swear, while I was bleeding out propped up against the van, I thought I heard your voice.โ€

โ€œYou did hear me.โ€ He raked a hand through his hair and grimaced at the sudden pain from moving his side and feeling his own wound.

The irony, that we both had bullet wounds, courtesy of one insane MC president.

โ€œVanceโ€”our club lawyer made a call to a high-profile judge, who made a call to the mayor, who called the sheriff.โ€

โ€œInteresting chain of command,โ€ I murmured, wondering what that conversation had sounded like and how the hell a judge was ordering the mayor to do anything.

โ€œAnyway, Flynn and Ramsey met us at the station with our bikes. On our way to the warehouse, we got caught up in a firefight with Devโ€™s men. It was an ambush. If it hadnโ€™t been for Knight and the Idaho boys, we wouldnโ€™t have been able to get out of there.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€

โ€œThere was a shooting. Knight and his boys took over the fight. Most of them are former military, remember? They covered us while we rode to the warehouse and they killed a few of Devโ€™s men. The Jackals were supposed

to be riding with us, but they had an issue on their own turf. Someone in their club ratted us out to Dev, probably hoping to get in tight with the Iron Horsemen. Dev knew the rest of the Jackals would ride with us against him, so he created a diversion to keep the Jackals close to home. We lost them as backup.

โ€œBy the time we got over to the warehouse, we found you bleeding out by a van, the warehouse was on fire, and Dev was gone.โ€

My breath caught. โ€œHe escaped? After all of this?โ€ โ€œFor now.โ€

โ€œAre youโ€”โ€ I exhaled. โ€œAre you going to track him down?โ€

Colt shook his head. โ€œMateo Sanchez has Franco on it already. Theyโ€™ll find Dev and then hand him over to the cartel and let Alejandro decide whatโ€™s to be done with him. Heโ€™s no longer our problem, and with the coke all gone, heโ€™d be stupid to ever come back to Waco. Once Alejandro finds out that the coke is missing along with Dev, the entire crew is history.โ€

I shivered. โ€œWhat about their wives and children? I know what cartels do. They murder entire families just to make a point. Theyโ€™ve even killed peopleโ€™s dogs before.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve already asked Sanchez to negotiate for their safety.โ€

โ€œWhat will that cost us? The price has been too high already!โ€ I cried, hysteria rising in my tone.

Colt placed his hand on my shoulder. โ€œEasy. Take it easy.โ€ โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œYou need to take a deep breath for me.โ€

When I felt like I was calm, I had to ask, โ€œWill Alejandro come after me? Us? We were the ones who burned his coke to the ground. It was worth millionsโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOnly after Dev let it slip through his fingers. No. Alejandro wonโ€™t come after us because Sanchezโ€™s men are sticking close to Waco to ensure the peace. Even a few million dollars in cocaine isnโ€™t enough for Alejandro

to take on another cartel head to head. Especially not in the States. Thatโ€™s bad for business. Itโ€™s better for him to wipe out the Iron Horsemen so his street cred stays valid and leave out the details that weโ€™re now working with Sanchez. It will look like the Iron Horsemen fucked with a cartel and got obliterated, which is true. All the other shit will be swept under the rug.โ€

I wasnโ€™t sure that gave me any comfort. โ€œHowโ€™s your pain?โ€ he asked suddenly. โ€œWhat pain? Morphine is kind of swell.โ€

He didnโ€™t smile at my light tone and I was instantly on my guard. โ€œYouโ€™re going to yell at me, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œYou think Iโ€™d yell at you while you were lying in a hospital bed after having been shot because you willingly placed yourself in danger even though you had no business being in danger in the first place?โ€

I paused, pretending to look thoughtful. โ€œYeah, I think youโ€™d yell at me.โ€

โ€œWell, youโ€™re damn fucking right Iโ€™d yell at you,โ€ he bellowed. โ€œWhat the fuck were you thinking?โ€

โ€œI was thinking,โ€ I replied, tone calm, โ€œthat you guys were in jail and I had no idea when youโ€™d be getting out. I knew this stuff with Dev was a time sensitive issue and it needed to be dealt with.โ€

โ€œWhat else,โ€ he demanded. โ€œWhat are you leaving out?โ€

โ€œThis was personal for me, and if I didnโ€™t have a stake in taking him down, I knew Iโ€™d always regret it. And Iโ€™d never find peace with Shellyโ€™s death. But you knew all that. So why do you seem so surprised?โ€

โ€œSurprised doesnโ€™t even begin to express how I feel. I was scared shitless knowing I couldnโ€™t protect you.โ€ He hung his head in near defeat. โ€œYou canโ€™t always go charging into dangerous situations.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t charge. I sat down and planned with Gray, Torque, Flynn and the others.โ€

I closed my eyes, not because I was finished with the conversation, but because the morphine was flowing and I felt myself slipping away from consciousness.

โ€œWeโ€™re not done with this discussion,โ€ Colt whispered in my ear. โ€œYou havenโ€™t told me you loved me,โ€ I mumbled.

โ€œI thought that was a given.โ€

โ€œI told you I loved you after you got shot. Itโ€™s courteous to repay in kind.โ€

His lips brushed my forehead. โ€œI love you. Losing you would devastate me. My life has no meaning without you. There. Are you happy?โ€

I smiled, my eyes still closed, โ€œYour delivery needs work, but yeah, Colt. That made me happy.โ€

The next time I woke up, it was late at night and Colt was standing by the window, staring out at the hospital grounds.

He must have heard me stir and turned back to look at me. There was hardly any moon or starlight, and I could only faintly make out the outline of his big, brawny body.

โ€œHow are you feeling?โ€ he asked, stalking toward my bedside and reaching for the pitcher of water.

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ I pressed my tongue to the roof of my dry mouth. โ€œWill you flip on the lamp?โ€

He did as I requested.

โ€œHow do I feel,โ€ I repeated. โ€œLike down is up and up is down. Like my emotions are all scrambled and I donโ€™t know what Iโ€™m supposed to feel.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re supposed to feel whatever you want to feel.โ€

I frowned, taking the glass of water and bringing the straw to my lips.

After I had my fill, Colt took it from me and set it aside.

โ€œYou havenโ€™t kissed me. Youโ€™ve barely touched me,โ€ I said.

โ€œYouโ€™re in a hospital bed. Did you kiss or touch me when I was laid up in bed?โ€

โ€œI think I did touch you. And I think you wanted me to touch you. Why wonโ€™t you touch me now? Iโ€™m not talking carnalโ€”just gentle intimacy. I know something is going on with you. What is it?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fucking livid with you,โ€ he said, his voice dispassionate. โ€œIโ€™ve had hours to think while youโ€™ve been asleep and I justโ€”havenโ€™t figured out how to wrap my head around your actions.โ€

I watched him pace the room as he vented.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe Gray and Torque didnโ€™t have the good sense to keep you out of this.โ€

โ€œOut of this,โ€ I repeated. โ€œWhere have you been the last few weeks?

This was all because of me.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t all because of you.โ€

โ€œFine. I was the catalyst that got it all moving.โ€ I swallowed. โ€œWhatโ€™s the opposite of the Midas touch, Colt?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t follow.โ€

โ€œYou know, Midas. Everything he touches turns to gold? Well, everything I touch turns to ash.โ€

His gaze softened in understanding. โ€œAh, darlinโ€™.โ€

โ€œNo, donโ€™t.โ€ I held up my hand to stop him. โ€œIโ€™m not looking for sympathy. Okay? I was justโ€”I had to help clean up the mess I brought into your life. To the Blue Angelsโ€™ lives. For me. For you. For Shelly.โ€

Saying her name out loud hurt me. Saying her name felt like summoning a ghost. A fissure of emotion erupted in my body shoving away the numbness that had enveloped me.

The tears were gentle at first and then they turned into a cascade. I became a careening, mourning woman who sounded like a deranged animal in pain.

Colt sat down on the bed next to me and held my body as I shook and broke apart.

โ€œHe killed her,โ€ I hiccoughed the words, my eyes nearly swollen shut. โ€œHe killed her and I couldnโ€™t even make him hurt. I couldnโ€™t even make him hurt one bit of what I feel.โ€

Colt crooned against my hair, brushing away my greasy locks, not caring that I needed a good scrubbing to remove the smell of hospital, the smell of death.

Would this eat away at me my entire life? Not being the one to end Dev?

When I quieted, I pressed my nose to Colt and inhaled. He smelled like Colt, like freedom and light. Like the air in summer. Like life itself.

โ€œNo one asked me to help,โ€ I said when my tears had abated. โ€œI volunteered. No one wanted to involve me. Torque nearly lost his shit when he saw that I didnโ€™t get in the car to head to the cabins.โ€ I pinned him with a stare. โ€œCabins, Colt. You never told me you had cabins.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have cabins. The club has cabins. And donโ€™t change the subject.

How did you get Gray and Torque to let you sit at the table?โ€

โ€œI asked.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œYou have to understandโ€”none of them were okay with using me as bait, but they knew it would get the job done. It was supposed to get the job done, anyway. But we failed. I failed.โ€

โ€œWhat is failure, though? You didnโ€™t get to look Dev in the eye and pull the trigger? Okay, so maybe thatโ€™s your version of failure. But we succeeded overall.โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t have Dev. Heโ€™s still running aroundโ€”pissed as hell, ready to set more fires.โ€

โ€œFranco found Dev.โ€

โ€œHe did?โ€ I gaped. โ€œWhen?โ€

โ€œA few hours ago. Franco already handed Dev over to Alejandroโ€™s men. The deed is done.โ€ He reached out and laced his fingers through mine.

โ€œYouโ€™re cold.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

My gaze dropped to the bed sheets.

โ€œDo you know what this means?โ€ he asked finally.

โ€œIt means I had no part in ending Devโ€™s life, and that doesnโ€™t sit right with me. Iโ€™ll feel like heโ€™s always out there, somewhere.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll have to make it right within yourself. I know you think pulling the trigger and killing him would ease your grief, but it would turn you into someone else. Someone you might not like.โ€ He shook his head. โ€œMore importantly, now that Dev is with Alejandroโ€™s men, we get to go home. Theyโ€™re professionals, in what they do. Dev is as good as gone. Weโ€™re safe.โ€

I looked up to meet his somber gaze. โ€œWe get to go home.โ€

He nodded. โ€œYou get to recover in our bed. Silas gets to pick out colors for his room. We get to step outside and not have to look over our shoulder and wonder if Dev is gunning for us. Itโ€™s over.โ€

It wasnโ€™t enough.

I didnโ€™t get my revenge.

I didnโ€™t get to watch the life fade from Devโ€™s eyes.

All the pain and suffering Iโ€™d endured at his hands didnโ€™t have an outlet.

Colt stared at me, his dark gaze intense. โ€œThis is life, Mia. Sometimes things donโ€™t play out the way we want them to.โ€ He squeezed my hand. โ€œYouโ€™ve gotta find a way to let this be enough. Otherwiseโ€ฆotherwise, itโ€™ll eat away at you and there will be nothing left worth living for.โ€

The next morning, Boxer and Zip paid me a visit. After Boxer made a few jokes about my appearance, he stared at Zip and said, โ€œYou tell her.โ€

โ€œTell me what?โ€ I asked.

Zip and Boxer exchanged a look, having one of those silent bro conversations I was never privy to.

โ€œCome on, guys. Tell me whatโ€™s going on.โ€ โ€œColt left,โ€ Zip said.

โ€œHe left?โ€ I asked, mouth agape. โ€œWhat do you mean he left?โ€

โ€œI mean heโ€™s gone. As in not here. He said heโ€™d be back in a few days,โ€ Zip added. โ€œBut he didnโ€™t tell me where he was going.โ€

โ€œWhy would he tell you?โ€ I pressed. โ€œYou guys were at each otherโ€™s throats.โ€

โ€œThey made up in prison,โ€ Boxer quipped. โ€œNot likeย that, but theyโ€™re brothers again.โ€

โ€œGlad to hear it,โ€ I murmured.

I glanced out the window. Iโ€™d only just woken up an hour or so ago. A nurse had come to take my vitals but then had left quickly. Colt hadnโ€™t been in my room when Iโ€™d opened my eyes. I thought nothing of it, thinking that he mightโ€™ve gone for coffee.

But he was gone. Without a word.

โ€œI got a theory,โ€ Boxer said slowly. โ€œYou wanna hear it?โ€

โ€œI think youโ€™ll tell it to me whether I want to hear it or not,โ€ I said, dragging my eyes away from the window.

โ€œI think he went for a ride,โ€ Boxer said. โ€œTo clear his head. To put it back on straight. Heโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHe what? Spit it out, Boxer.โ€

โ€œGod, youโ€™re fucking cranky,โ€ he stated.

โ€œIโ€™m about to get fucking crankier,โ€ I muttered.

Boxer sighed. โ€œColt mightโ€™ve punched a wall while you were in surgery. Heโ€™s been off ever since. Riding is the only thing that clears out the cob webs.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t believe he left me.โ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t leave you,โ€ Zip said. โ€œHe went to go find himself.โ€

โ€œFind himself. What the fuck is that? He has that luxury, but I donโ€™t?โ€ I gestured to my leg. โ€œIโ€™ve got months of physical therapy to look forward to.

Basically being bed-ridden. And I never got to pay back the man who killed my best friend.ย Find himself?โ€ I sounded like a banshee, screaming and caterwauling like a wounded animal.

Hell, I was wounded, and it wasnโ€™t just my leg.

โ€œWhat about me? How the fuck could he do this to me? Weโ€™re supposed to be a team. You donโ€™t justโ€”he really took off?โ€

Boxer and Zip both nodded.

I leaned my head back against the pillows. โ€œThis is unbelievable.โ€

I wished Joni was here so she could shed some light on her brother. โ€œWhen is everyone coming back from the cabins?โ€

โ€œNot for a little while,โ€ Zip said. โ€œWe wanna make sure all the shit is wrapped up here before we bring them home.โ€

โ€œWhat other shit? Dev is gone, apparently. What else is there to handle?โ€

Boxer scratched his chin. โ€œAlejandroโ€™s men are cleaning the streets looking for the Iron Horsemen. Itโ€™s not a bright idea to be riding around Waco wearing a cut right now.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t watch the news,โ€ Zip said. โ€œTheyโ€™re reporting solely on the crime wave. Itโ€™s bad.โ€

โ€œSo it really is over,โ€ I said in amazement. After weeks of fear and terror, of being on lockdown and the losses, it was done.

โ€œYeah, it is,โ€ Boxer said with a nod.

โ€œHave you talked to Joni?โ€ I asked Zip. โ€œHowโ€™s she doing? Is everyone okay? Silas?โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re fine. The kids donโ€™t know anything thatโ€™s going on. Silas is doing well from what Darcy said.โ€

I breathed a sigh of relief. One less thing I had to worry about.

There was a knock on the door, followed by Knight popping his head in. He looked at me in concern. I nodded for him to enter. He walked through

the door and held it for Zip and Boxer who moved toward the exit. Boxer grasped my big toe and gave it a tweak before leaving.

Knight came all the way into the room and sat down on the edge of the bed. He examined me for a long moment and then said, โ€œChrist.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m okay.โ€

He shook his head. โ€œYouโ€™re not the one whoโ€™s supposed to be reassuring me. Iโ€™m supposed to do that for you. I sat with Colt, you know. When they brought you back from surgery. The both of us sat by your bed waiting for you to come out of anesthesia. Your boy was a real wreck.โ€

โ€œAnd you?โ€

He sighed. โ€œSame. Boxer and Zipโ€ฆdid they tell you about Colt?โ€ โ€œAbout how heโ€™s gone? Yeah. They said he went for a ride to clear his

head.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know you well,โ€ Knight said slowly. โ€œSo Iโ€™m gonna need you to be honest with me.โ€

I looked at him in confusion. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s your mental state? I mean, how fragile is too fragile?โ€ โ€œYou know where he went, donโ€™t you?โ€

After a moment, he nodded. โ€œI followed him to the parking lot. We had someโ€ฆwords.โ€

โ€œYou had some fists, you mean?โ€

He smiled slightly. โ€œIt mightโ€™ve come to that. I got protective over you. He landed a punch. I hit him back. Then I made him tell me where he was going.โ€

โ€œWhere did he go?โ€

His eyes met mine. โ€œTo get your revenge for you.โ€

I dreamed the devil climbed into bed with me.

He held me in his arms, kissed my lips, tasting of violence and seduction. He smelled like gunpowder and leather, woodsmoke and man.

He felt solid and real, but I knew he was a figment of my morphine- induced imagination. I cried tears of bereavement because I knew once I opened my eyes, heโ€™d be gone and Iโ€™d be alone again.

So for the time being, I gave into his touch, I gave into the feeling of not being so alone.

And when I came in my sleep, his lips were there to steal my cries.

I cracked an eyelid, taking a moment to get my bearings. My head was not resting on a pillow, but on a warm male chest.

โ€œColt?โ€ I whispered.

โ€œHmm.โ€ His fingers played with my hair. โ€œWhere did you go?โ€

He paused. โ€œI thought Knight told you.โ€

โ€œHe did.โ€ We were silent a moment and then I asked, โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œI asked Flynn for his help. Cost me a bit. To be there at the end.โ€ โ€œWhat did it cost you?โ€

โ€œAlejandro Garcia is still going to have some jurisdiction in Waco through the Jackals. Theyโ€™ll take the East side. Weโ€™ll take the North side. Garcia will branch out east toward Louisiana when he wants to expand. Sanchez will branch out north toward Idaho.โ€

โ€œDivide and conquer, eh?โ€ I asked. โ€œCriminals gotta eat too, babe.โ€

I huffed out a laugh. โ€œYeah, I guess they do.โ€ I paused. โ€œYou think Alejandro and the Jackals will keep their end of the bargain?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. I guess time will tell.โ€

โ€œWhat about the bloodshed? Wacoโ€™s seen enough, donโ€™t you think?โ€

โ€œWe stay on our side, they stay on theirs. Iโ€™ve talked to Franco. Heโ€™s assured me that Sanchez doesnโ€™t want to see the loss of innocent lives. Canโ€™t say the same for Garcia.โ€

I traced the warm skin that peeked out from the collar of his T-shirt. I couldnโ€™t worry about that now. There would always be unknowns. Danger would continue to lurk around the corner. I was an MC presidentโ€™s Old Lady. It came with the territory.

I didnโ€™t ask if he got to be the one to pull the trigger, or if he was just there to watch Devโ€™s life come to an end. Not that Colt would tell me, anyway. And it had nothing to do with the fact that we werenโ€™t married and I wasnโ€™t protected under spousal privilege. He wouldnโ€™t want it to weigh on me.

โ€œWere you mad when you found out Iโ€™d left?โ€ โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œAre you still mad?โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t think so.โ€

โ€œNo?โ€

I tilted my chin up to look at him. โ€œThank you. For making sure itโ€™s truly over. Thank you for being there for me.โ€

His gaze softened. โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€

I rested my head against his chest and snuggled up against him. โ€œMia?โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€ โ€œMarry me.โ€
