โIโM JUST GONNA WAIT OUTSIDE,โ Boxer said, leaving the small office.
The door shut and a rush of air whooshed out of my lungs.
I found a way to stand up, but my legs gave out and if Colt hadnโt been near, I wouldโve fallen to the floor. โMia?โ Colt asked, brown eyes surveying me, his hands on my arms. โYouโre pale. Are you sick?โ
โDev called me just now. On the garage line. Heโs been keeping tabs on me.โ
โWhat did he say to you?โ he asked, voice devoid of emotion.
โHe knows I dropped Richie off at the bus depot.โ My gaze dropped to the ground. โHe threatened me, Colt. Threatened you. Threatened the club. He told meโฆโ
Coltโs fingers reached out for my chin and gently pulled my gaze to his. โTold you what?โ
I swallowed. โHe made it sound like he was going to kill me.โ He stared at me but didnโt move.
โIโIโm scared, Colt,โ
Before I knew it, Colt pressed me to his chest. โIโve got you. Do you trust me?โ
I nodded into his shirt. โLetโs go.โ
โWhere are we going?โ I asked.
โSending a message.โ โWhat kind of messageโฆโ
He didnโt reply as he took my hand and led me out to his truck. I didnโt want to be led around by him, so I dug my heels in, literally, and made Colt stop. He looked over his shoulder at me and frowned.
โWhere are we going?โ I asked again. โTo a tattoo parlor.โ
โWhy?โ
โYouโre getting inked.โ โUh, no, Iโm not.โ
โYou are,โ he insisted. โWith my name and the Blue Angels logo on your skin, no one will fuck with you.โ
โYouโre kidding, right? You think a tattoo is going to stop Dev?โ โMiaโโ
โYou are out of your fucking mind! He knows weโre together, Colt. He threatened you specifically. I donโt care what you thinkโheโs not going to abide by the no-women-no-children code of honor.โ
โBabe,โ he said quietly. โIf Dev makes a move against you in any way, I can call up brothers in other chapters in other cities. I canโt do that, I canโt ask them to make this shit personal, get involved in a war that has nothing to do with their city, unlessย youย become my Old Lady. Unless you get my name and my club inked on you. They gotta know that if shit gets real, theyโre not fighting for random club ass. Trying to protect you the only way I can, darlinโ. And right now thatโs by getting my name on you.โ
Somehow Iโd wound up in his arms. He lifted me up until we were nose to nose. I heard nothing except the thump of my heartbeat, the blood rushing to my ears. I wanted to cover his lips with mine, wrap my legs around him, and drown in sensation. Forget the cold terror that had taken up residence in my body since Iโd heard Devโs voice on the phone. His threats
had pummeled me, gotten through the layer of safety I thought I had surrounded myself with.
โIโm askinโ ya,โ Colt said softly. โGet my name on you. I can take care of the rest.โ
โPrez,โ Zip called, shattering the moment.
I turned my head, my nose grazing Coltโs cheek. Four scary bikers had stopped working and were watching our exchange. My face heated when I thought of them hearing us yell out our dirty laundry.
Colt released me and my feet touched the ground. โTruck, babe.โ
I climbed into the truck and shut the door. Colt and Zip had an exchange. Zip got in Coltโs face and I swore Colt was about to punch Zip. Colt said something and then they both looked at me. I shrank down into the seat, wishing I was invisible.
Colt stalked toward the truck and nearly ripped the door off its hinges. He got in, slammed the door, and ground the key into the ignition. We sat for a moment in silence; he unrolled the windows to let in some of the Texas spring air.
โGetting your name on me means this is for real,โ I said softly. โYeah, I know that,โ he bit out.
I shook my head. โNo, I meanโif I do it, it means Iโm one of you. It means,โ I swallowed, โIโm asking for people who donโt know me to put their lives on the line for a shit stormย Iย triggered. I couldnโt bear it ifโฆโ
โIf what?โ
โSeeing you get hurt. Seeing any of you get hurt.โ
โHey. Look at me.โ When I refused, he said gruffly, โEyes. I need to see your eyes.โ
I looked at him reluctantly, feeling emotion sting my throat. โYou havenโt had family in a long time. Families lean on each other when shit gets bad. Thatโs what we are, honey. Family. Iโm giving you my family by bringing you into the fold. This shit with Dev? Itโs only gonna get worse. I
want to make you a legit member of my family so everyone knows they canโt fuck with you. And babe? If anyone actually is stupid enough to fuck with you, Iโll rain down hell.โ
โYouโve never said you loved me, Colt, and now you want me to get something permanent on my body. You donโt think thatโs a little insane?โ
โI just told you Iโd rain down hell if anyone fucked with you. What the hell do you think I was talking about?โ he demanded.
โThis is a high functioning level of insanity,โ I stated. โYou know that, right?โ
His smile was slow. โDoes that mean you love me too?โ โI was actually referring to the tattoo.โ
โItโs still throbbing,โ I whined. โYou totally downplayed how much it was going to hurt.โ
โNot gonna lie, babe,โ he began. โCanโt wait to fuck you from behind and see my name staring back at me.โ
I glared at him in the bathroom mirror. His grin was cheeky. โIโm glad
youโreย feeling better about the entire situation with Dev.โ โYouโre not feeling better?โ he asked.
I shook my head.
โI think I can make you feel better.โ
โI donโt want to have sex with you right now,โ I snapped.
He threw his head back and laughed. โNo, I wasnโt talking about sexโ though Iโm sure I could change your mind. I was gonna tell you that with my name on you, I feel better about you going out with Joni tonight.โ
โIโm surprised youโre even letting me out of the house. What with all this Dev shit going on.โ
โYouโre going to a Blue Angels bar and both Acid and Cheese are going to be standing guard. Canโt keep you locked up and out of sight anymore. Sends the wrong kind of message, yeah?โ
He leaned down and plopped a kiss onto the top of my head. โGot something else to show you.โ Colt took my hand and led me out of the bathroom into the bedroom.
โItโll be a little while yet before you can show off your tattoo. So I got you something else to wear.โ
He went into his closet and came out a moment later holding up a leather cutโsmall, feminine, with a patch that read Blue Angels on the right breast pocket. Property of Colt was on the back.
โNot really my style,โ I said, touching the leather. It was soft and new and made my head spin with gravitas.
โThought you might say that,โ he said with a chuckle and then placed it on the bed. โThereโs a box in the closet. Why donโt you open it yourself?โ
I frowned. โBox? What box?โ
He gestured with his chin and I immediately scampered to the walk-in closet. In the center of the floor was a pink wrapped box with curled silver ribbons. I reached for it and brought it back into the bedroom.
โWhat did you do?โ I asked.
โJust open it.โ He leaned against the doorway of the room and waited.
I tore into the box and brushed aside the tissue paper to reveal the sexiest, most bad ass ankle boots Iโd ever seen. Black leather with metallic silver spikes and studs all over. Including the heel.
โHoly shit,โ I breathed when I felt inside the lining. โLike โem?โ he asked with a knowing grin.
โIย loveย them,โ I corrected. โWhat about me?โ
โWhat about you?โ I couldnโt take my gaze off the boots. They were a shoe fetishistโs dream. Iโd worked at a bar, on my feet. I had always chosen comfort over fashion, but nowโฆ
โWaitinโ on you to give me the words. Want to hear them.โ
โYou havenโt said them either,โ I reminded him with a reproachful look.
His gaze was hot as it raked over me before coming back to rest on my face. โLove you, darlinโ.โ
My smile was slow. โI love you, too.โ
His mouth quirked up on one side. โSo youโll wear the boots tonight when you go out?โ
โHell yeah!โ
โYouโll wear the leather cut, too. You get one thing. I get one thing.โ โTechnically you got two things. The cut and the tattoo of your name on
me.โ I arched an eyebrow daring him to argue. โBesides, the cut will rub against my bandage. Guess you didnโt think about that, did you?โ
โMy womanโs got a smart mouth.โ โYou like it.โ
โIโd like it better wrapped around myโโ
โDo you have a Blue Angels T-shirt?โ I interrupted. โWith the logo and everything?โ
โYeah, I got one.โ He pushed away from the doorway and went to his dresser. He pulled open the bottom drawer and dug out a red T-shirt with the logo. It had Blue Angels written across the back. It was perfect for what I needed.
โAnd a pair of scissors?โ
โNightstand drawer. What are you going to do?โ he asked. โIโm going to surprise you,โ I said with a grin.
He didnโt smile back. Instead, his gaze felt heavy with intensity. The doorbell rang.
โJoni,โ he said.
I nodded. โWill you get that? And tell her to come up. I need her help getting ready.โ
โYouโre bossy.โ He marched toward me and kissed me, slow and deep. โLetโs just see how bossy youโre going to be tonight when you get home and I strip everything off you except those boots.โ
โPromises, promises,โ I muttered.
We were engaged in a breathless kiss when the doorbell rang again. โReally should get that,โ he said, pulling away.
The door clicked shut and then I grabbed the T-shirt and scissors. Joni walked in when I was standing in front of the mirror, holding the top in front of me.
โWhat did you do?โ she asked. โThatโs so cool!โ
โThe art of T-shirt cutting,โ I told her. The back and sides were sliced and it would reveal skin.
โYou are going to have to show me how to do that,โ she said.
โI will.โ I looked her up in down, taking in her leather dress that crisscrossed down her back with the front looking like a corset. Her rich brown locks had been curled and sprayed, her makeup dramatic and heavy. She wore red vixen pumps to complete the outfit.
โYou look amazing,โ I said.
She brushed aside my compliment with a wave of her hand and then pointed to the boots. โOh my God. Those are gorgeous.โ
โI know,โ I said with a laugh. โI was going to wear them with a pair of skinny black jeans and this shirt I just doctored. I wonโt be under dressed next to you, will I?โ
She shook her head. โWeโll just make sure the makeup and the hair go along with it.โ
โI donโt have any of the heavy duty stuff.โ
โShoot, I shouldโve brought my arsenal of makeup and hair products over.โ
โThatโs okay.โ
โI can have Colt send one of the prospects to the drugstore.โ
I shook my head. โI donโt want to wait to go out. I want to leave the house before Colt changes his mind.โ
โChanges his mind? Or yours?โ She grinned. โI heard he was quite persuasive about the tattoo when you guys were yelling at each other in Charlieโs parking lot.โ She gestured to the bandage peeking out from my tank top. โHe got his way, didnโt he?โ
โHow did you know about all of that?โ I asked in surprise. I slid out of my denim shorts and then got into the jeans that were on the bed.
โReap told Rachel, Rachel called me. So can I see your tattoo?โ
I gave her my back and tacit permission to move the bandage. โWow.
You really did it.โ โYeah, I did.โ
She concealed the tattoo, ensuring the dressing stuck to my skin. โWhy?โ
I took a step away to slide the cut T-shirt over my head. โWhy? What do you mean why?โ
โI mean you seemed pretty adamant about not getting involved with my brother and now youโre not just involved, youโre like, his woman. His Old Lady.โ
I smirked at her in amusement and then went to the bathroom to do my hair. โWerenโt you the one who told me Colt was worth it? Loyal, strong, brave. All that stuff?โ
โYeah.โ
โNot to mention, heโs wicked good in bed.โ
She covered her ears. โAnd thatโs my cue. Meet me downstairs. Hurry up, I gotta drink away what you just said.โ
An hour later, Joni and I were sitting in a booth at Shortieโs,ย a bar in Blue Angel territory. Weโd gotten more than a few looks as we entered, much to Joniโs delight. There was no way I was under the radar now. Not with Coltโs T-shirt and his name on my body. Even though the tattoo wasnโt on display, the two burly bikers whoโd followed us in and then taken a seat
in the corner to watch over us alerted anyone who was paying attention that we were with the Blue Angels.
Colt had been gone by the time Iโd gotten downstairs. Zip had stopped by and they had both hopped on their bikes to drive away. I didnโt like that heโd left the house without telling me goodbye.
I wasnโt sure I knew how to do any of what was being asked of me.
โYou look so pathetic,โ Joni commented, her gaze drifting from me to her pint of beer.
โMe? You look just as pathetic as I do,โ I stated. โIn fact, whyย doย you look so pathetic?โ
She sighed. โTrying to tell myself to move on and actually moving on are two different things. Iโm bummed Zip didnโt even spare me a glance.โ
โThen heโs an idiot. Youโre amazing.โ
โThanks.โ She shot me a wobbly smile. โIโm going out on a date with a doctor I work with.โ
โNo way. Really?โ โReally.โ
โWhen?โ
โNext week when I get my next night off. Heโs cute and funny, but heโs not Zip.โ
โThen why even bother if all youโre gonna do is fake it?โ I asked.
โBecause maybe if I fake it and let some other guy distract me, itโll take.โ She took another sip of her beer. โI still canโt believe you got Coltโs name on you.โ
โYeah, I can hardly believe that myself. Itโs been a crazy past few weeks.โ
โWhat made you decide to get the tattoo?โ she asked. โWhen the girls came over, you made it seem like youโd never do something like that. And now youโve gone and changed your tune.โ
โI got your brotherโs name on my body because I love him.โ
Her eyes widened. โNo.โ โYup.โ
โSeriously?โ โSeriously.โ
โBut, how? How did that happen so fast?โ โI donโt know.โ I shrugged. โBut it did.โ โWhat does this mean for you guys?โ
โIt means whatever it means.โ โThatโs so stupidly vague.โ
โYouโve been in love with Zip for years, right?โ โDonโt remind me,โ she grumbled.
โSorry. I just mean, youโve had years to think about what a life with Zip would look like. Youโve explored every avenue, youโve grown up in this world, you understand what youโre getting into.โ
โYeah, so?โ
โI love Colt,โ I said slowly, finding it a miracle I didnโt trip over the words. โBut that doesnโt mean I have it all figured out. You know?โ
โI get it. Sorry if Iโve put any pressure on you to decide anything. Iโm just glad he found youโand you found him.โ
โYouโre kind of amazing, you know that? I think youโd get along really well with my best friend.โ
โIโd love to meet her. Why donโt you invite her out to join us?โ โAnother time. I donโt want to have to explain the tattoo. She tried to
warn me away from biker guysโฆโ
Joni laughed. โThen sheโs going to be in for quite a shock.โ
A terrible new country song came on the jukebox. I jumped up from my seat and said, โI have to change it or Iโll go crazy.โ
Joni pulled out her phone. โOkay, but youโre not allowed to play
Journey. Thatโs my only stipulation.โ
I wandered past the tables. Most were occupied by people laughing and having a good time. It wasnโt too crowded yet, and I was contemplating ordering a burger. I stood in front of the jukebox, sorting through the albums.
โHi,โ a guy said from behind me.
I jumped, startled out of my music perusal.
โSorry. Didnโt mean to scare you.โ He held up his hands in an obvious show of apology.
I noted his sterile, clean-cut good looks.
โItโs okay. I just didnโt hear you approach.โ I turned back to the jukebox and kept sorting through songs.
โNot a fan of country?โ โNope.โ
โMe neither. I like punk.โ
Despite myself, I laughed. Mr. Clean Cut did not look like the type who listened to punk.
โJust kidding. I hate punk, too,โ he said, a wide smile spreading across his face. โAllow me.โ
He fed a buck into the slot and then gestured for me to press a button. Moments later, โPaint it Blackโ byย The Rolling Stonesย played.
โWell done,โ Mr. Clean Cut said.
โThanks. Canโt go wrong with The Stones.โ โCan I buy you a drink?โ
Before I could answer, I felt a large, warm body behind me. โShe doesnโt need a drink.โ
To make matters worse, Colt hauled me to his side and curled his large hand around my neck in a possessive show.
โThis is Colt,โ I introduced. โSorry, I didnโt get your name?โ
The man almost squeaked as he turned and scurried away. I looked up at Colt whose eyes were still following the retreating form of Mr. Clean Cut.
Colt finally dropped his gaze and his lips curved into a seductive smile.
I frowned. โIโm confused.โ โAbout?โ
โWhy youโre here.โ
He tilted his head down and smiled at me. โI missed you.โ โYouโฆmissed me?โ I asked in surprised delight.
โYeah, babe.โ His hand tightened ever so slightly. โAre you gonna kiss me hello, or what?โ
I pressed my palms to his chest, my lids fluttering closed. His mouth met mine, warm, eager, demanding.
โYou left the house without saying goodbye,โ I admonished. He grinned. โHad something to take care of.โ
โWhat could you have possibly needed to take care of?โ
Colt let me go and took a step away from me. He reached up to his white T-shirt collar and pulled it down, showing off his right pectoral that was covered in a bandage.
Exactly the same type of bandage that was on my shoulder. โNo,โ I murmured, my hand touching the edge of the tape.
โYeah.โ His tone was gruff. โYou didnโt really think Iโd ask you to get my name on you and not do the same in return?โ
โYou never said anything. Why didnโt you do it after I was in the tattoo chair?โ
He lifted my chin to meet his gaze. โI wanted to surprise you.โ โWell, Iโm surprised.โ
Colt took my lips in a gentle kiss before pulling back. โFigure we got years before you know all my habits and I know yours. But I know all the things I need to know about you right now.โ He leaned down and whispered in my ear, โI know how you bite your lip and your forehead wrinkles when youโre trying to work something out. I know you like to be independent, but I also know you were dying for a family. I know you love your friends
enough to protect them. I know what I need to know about you, Mia. Iโm honored to have your name on me.โ
โColt,โ I breathed, feeling tears coat my lashes.
The Stones song came to an end, and for a moment there was a lull in the music, just long enough for me to hear the motorcycles.
I didnโt think anything of it since we were on Blue Angel territory and was about to ask Colt if I could buy him a beer when he suddenly pushed me to the ground.
I fell to the floor and Coltโs body draped over mine. Air whooshed from my lungs and my shoulder throbbed in dull pain.
โWhat the hell?โ I groused, but the words lodged in my throat when I heard the sound of gunshots. Bullets began to spray the room. Windows exploded and the walls burst with clouds of dust. Shards of metallic-backed razor sharp mirror flew everywhere as bullets struck the glass behind the bar. People screamed and a cacophony of mayhem and destruction made my ears ring. Tables and chairs scraped along the scarred wooden floors as customers dove for safety. People scurried to find protection, spilling beer and liquor and knocking each other to the ground in a panic.
I was numb with terror, but I got out a strangled, โJoni!โ โAcidโs got her,โ Colt said, voice hard.
When the noise ceased and the room had gone eerily quiet, I attempted to peer around. My breathing was shallow and spots danced before my eyes. โColt,โ I wheezed. โI canโt breathe.โ
He lifted himself off me and stood. Reaching down, he took my hand and helped me up. The bar was wrecked. Bottles behind the bar were nothing more than shattered remains; tables and chairs were kicked over, the walls riddled with holes. There was a long crack down the front of the jukeboxโs glass. It made a noise, trying to turn back on, but after a pathetic warble it fell silent.
People slowly emerged from their stunned confusion. They looked at the bar, taking stock of each other and themselves.
Someone whimpered in pain.
โColt!โ Cheese called out. โOver here!โ
We ran to Cheese who was helping a struggling Joni sit up. โDonโt worry him for nothing,โ she groused, pressing a hand to her upper arm. โIโm fine. Itโs just a cut from glass.โ
โLet me see,โ Colt barked.
โIโm a nurse,โ she reminded him, even as she removed her hand so Colt could inspect her injury. Blood oozed a bit from the wound before Joni pressed her palm to it. โItโs superficial.โ
โPrez, we got trouble,โ Acid said with a glance at the doorway.
โIron Horsemen?โ Colt asked, not taking his eyes from Joni who was sitting in a chair, looking far too pale.
โCops.โ
โFuck,โ he muttered. โGuys, get Joni and Mia out of here. Iโll deal with the cops.โ He squeezed my hand and then let me go.
Acid hoisted Joni up and all but carted her to the back of the bar. Cheese and I followed at a quick pace. The four of us piled into Joniโs car and left the parking lot as quickly as we could without attracting any more attention. I sat in the back with Joni and kept up a steady stream of chatter in hopes of distracting her from the discomfort.
We got her checked in and registered at the hospital. She was taken back immediately, and the three of us moved to the waiting room.
โCoffee?โ Cheese asked. Acid shook his head.
โIโd love a cup. Thanks,โ I said.
Cheese went off in search of caffeine and Acid pulled out his phone and shot off a text. Twenty minutes later, the elevator doors opened and Zip burst out.
โWhere is she?โ he demanded.
โDoctor is stitching her up, sheโs going to be fine,โ I said, my gaze resting on him.
Zip nodded and then reluctantly took a seat. His leg bounced with nervousness and then he got up from his chair and began to pace.
โWho told you we were here? Colt?โ I asked, pitching my voice low so Cheese and Acid didnโt overhear me.
โAcid texted,โ Zip answered.
Another ten minutes passed in silence and then I saw Joni walking down the hallway toward the reception desk.
When she noticed Zip, her mouth gaped. โWhat are you doing here?โ โIโm going to drive you home in my truck,โ Zip replied.
โMkay. They gave me painkillers. The good shit,โ Joni stage-whispered and then grinned. โIโm feeling pretty light and airy. So letโs go, pretty boyโฆโ
A slight smile tugged at Zipโs lips and he couldnโt take his eyes off Joni as he led her toward the elevator. Cheese and I followed behind them and Acid brought up the rear. Joni babbled incoherently, but the rest of us were subdued.
When we got to the parking lot, Joni threw her uninjured arm around me. I winced when she pressed her hand against the bandage on my shoulder, but I managed to hold it in.
โYouโre a great friend,โ she yelled.
โAnd now Iโm your partially deaf friend, thanks,โ I said with a laugh and a pat to her back. โIโm really glad youโre okay.โ
โHey! Look! Weโre both injured.โ โThat we are,โ I agreed in amusement.
She nearly fell over into Zipโs side. โIโm tired,โ she muttered.
Zip pushed a curl of hair behind Joniโs ear and let his hand linger. โI know, babe. Letโs go.โ He looked at Cheese. โYou still have her car keys?
Good. Take Mia to the clubhouse.โ
โThe clubhouse?โ I asked. โWhy canโt I go home?โ Zipโs gaze was dark. โHome isnโt safe anymore.โ
