Chapter no 10

Wreck & Ruin

BY THE TIMEย I woke up late the next morning with a slight hangover, Colt was gone. Cheese sat on the porch in his customary chair and I waved at him through the front window. The remains of my impromptu party littered the living room. While I sipped on a cup of coffee, I cleaned up. As I threw the last of the empty pizza boxes into the garbage, my cell phone vibrated. I followed the sound of it, wondering where Iโ€™d left it the previous evening. It wasnโ€™t like I had tons of people trying to get in touch with me. Finding it between the couch cushions, I fished it out and answered it.

โ€œHello?โ€

โ€œGet dressed,โ€ Joni commanded. โ€œUmโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going to the clubhouse for a barbecue. So nothing fancy. Jeans will work.โ€

โ€œBut Iโ€”Coltโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re getting sprung, chicken. Everyone wants to meet you.โ€ โ€œEveryone? Everyone who?โ€

โ€œThe club.โ€ โ€œOh, boy.โ€

โ€œYeah, so weโ€™re having a potluck, grilling out. The kids will be there, so itโ€™s just family. Nothing crazy. Promise.โ€

I laughed, though part of me was curious about the Blue Angels I was hearing so much about. Iโ€™d only interacted with Zip and Cheese. โ€œOkay, well, what can I bring?โ€

โ€œNothing.โ€

โ€œI have to bring something. What will these people think of me?โ€

โ€œThey know youโ€™re a bit of an invalid and cooking and or stirring things is difficult.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not showing up to a potluck without beer or chips. Iโ€™m not a moocher.โ€

โ€œFine, weโ€™ll stop by the grocery store on the way.โ€ โ€œPromise?โ€

โ€œPromise. Can you be ready in an hour?โ€ โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œOkay, see you soon.โ€

She hung up, and I shook my head. Before I could dial Colt to confirm the potluck, my phone buzzed again.

Colt.

โ€œAre you calling to tell me about the barbecue at the clubhouse?โ€ I asked.

โ€œYeah. Howโ€™d you know?โ€

โ€œYour sister. Sheโ€™s coming to pick me up. I need to hit the store and get some stuff.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Colt commanded. โ€œZip will drive you.โ€ โ€œBut Cheeseโ€”โ€

โ€œAs soon as Zip gets to you, Cheese is on party duty.โ€ โ€œDo I even want to know what that means?โ€ I asked. โ€œNo.โ€ I heard the smile in his voice.

โ€œWhy canโ€™t you drive me?โ€ I demanded. โ€œDo you miss me?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I lied. โ€œYouโ€™re just a control freak, so Iโ€™m surprised youโ€™re letting Zip drive me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m in town. Iโ€™ll be at the clubhouse later.โ€ โ€œOkay,โ€ I said, giving in.

โ€œAnd no grocery store.โ€ โ€œBut I want to bring things.

โ€œIโ€™ll swing by and get some stuff.โ€

โ€œGet beer, chips, and a premade salad. Or a fruit tray.โ€

โ€œYes, dear,โ€ Colt chimed like a chastised husband. โ€œThereโ€™s a spare set of house keys in the drawer next to the fridge. Use those to lock up the house.โ€

โ€œYes, dear,โ€ I parroted.

He laughed, the sound easy on my ears. I liked knowing I was responsible for it.

I didnโ€™t call Joni back to tell her not to bother coming over because I had a plan. A plan to get Joni and Zip in the same place and see what happened. It was pure evil, but maybe they needed a push in each otherโ€™s direction. My new friend wanted him, and I wanted to see his reaction to her.

Thanks to Lauraโ€”the club groupie who had brought over bags of used clothesโ€”I had a wealth of new cute outfits to choose from. I settled on a comfortable spaghetti-strap, blue cotton dress that hit just above the knee. It showed off the freckled skin of my shoulders. I was just putting the finishing touches on my lashes when the doorbell rang. I went downstairs to answer it, glad to see it was Joni looking hot and tall in a pair of dark, skinny-leg jeans, a black, flowy tank top, and long, silver, dangle earrings.

โ€œYou look amazing!โ€ I stated, waving her inside.

Her high heels clacked on the wood floor as she entered. Smiling, she said, โ€œThanks. You look pretty, too. You ready to go? Cheese can follow

us.โ€

โ€œUh, yeah, about that. Colt wanted Zip to drive me.โ€ โ€œOh.โ€ She frowned. โ€œThen why am I here?โ€

There was a knock on the door and I shot her a look. โ€œJust go with it, okay?โ€ She nodded, and when I opened the door Zip stood on the porch. Leather cut, wavy blond hair, sharp blue eyesโ€”focused on Joni.

โ€œHi,โ€ he greeted. โ€œHey,โ€ she answered.

โ€œIโ€™m such an idiot,โ€ I chirped. โ€œJoni offered to give me a ride, and I forgot to call her and tell her you were driving me.โ€

โ€œNo sweat,โ€ Zip said.

โ€œWhy donโ€™t we carpool?โ€ I suggested.

โ€œIsnโ€™t it easier if Joni takes her car?โ€ Zip asked.

โ€œShe wants to drink,โ€ I blurted out. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t want her to drive.โ€ Zipโ€™s eyes slid to Joni.

โ€œUh, yeah. I want to drink,โ€ Joni stated. โ€œA lot.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Zip sighed in feigned annoyance, though it appeared to be all for show. โ€œYou guys ready to go?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I said. I grabbed my cell phone off the coffee table and a spare key, realizing that I didnโ€™t have a purse.

โ€œI can hold those for you,โ€ Zip said after I locked up. Cheese was on his bike. Revving the engine, he waved and then pulled away.

โ€œThanks,โ€ I said, handing Zip my two items of importance. I was excited to get out of Coltโ€™s house. As comfortable as his home was, I was about to scale the walls just to have something to do.

I climbed into the back of Zipโ€™s black SUV before Joni could. I wanted to give her the front seat. It was unbelievable watching them. They repelled like magnets, except for their gazes. They couldnโ€™t stop looking at one another. I wondered if Colt had any idea about the attraction between his VP and his sister.

The drive to the clubhouse was quiet. I stared out of the window, watching the flat land swish past. The entire ride was filled with tension and silence. When we arrived at the clubhouse, I immediately hopped out of the car, wanting to escape Joni and Zipโ€™s weird bubble of avoidance and sexual tension.

I waited for Joni to get out of the car and then followed her inside. We moved through the expansive living room to the open-designed kitchen. Darcy stood at the granite island, cling-wrapping a plate of raw hamburger patties.

โ€œHey, sugar!โ€ Darcy greeted, leaning over to give me a cheek brush. โ€œHow did you feel this morning?โ€

โ€œSlow to start,โ€ I admitted. โ€œBut after my second cup of coffee, I felt okay.โ€

She nodded. โ€œGirlsโ€™ nights can get rowdy. That one was pretty tame.

Wait until we go out dancing.โ€

I paused, surprised that she was already inviting me to another girlsโ€™ night out.

โ€œIโ€™m so glad I didnโ€™t have to work at the hospital today,โ€ Joni said with a laugh. โ€œI was fairly useless until about ten this morning.โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t we drink the same amount?โ€ I looked at her. โ€œDid I drink you under the table?โ€

โ€œIt would appear that way, yes,โ€ Joni said with amusement. I gestured with my chin to the counter. โ€œWhat can I do?โ€

โ€œTake that plate of hotdogs outside and hand them to Gray. Heโ€™s at the grill.โ€

โ€œPut me to work,โ€ Joni commanded.

โ€œCondiments need to go on the tables,โ€ Darcy dictated.

โ€œGot it.โ€ Joni went to the fridge and rooted around the shelves, pulling out bottles of mustard and ketchup. Her butt was on display in her amazing jeans and I caught Zip staring at it.

โ€œZip, find me a prospect and send him in,โ€ Darcy said. โ€œI need another case of beer brought up from the basement.โ€

Zip grinned. โ€œThese parties would be a shit show without you here.โ€

Darcy rolled her eyes. โ€œThey turn into a shit show after a few bottles of bourbon.โ€

He kissed her cheek on his way toward the hallway. He gestured for me to follow and when we got to the back door, he opened it, allowing me to go out first.

Before I could continue to the grill, Zip put his hand on my arm and stopped me.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ he asked.

I frowned in confusion and lifted the plate of hotdogs. โ€œI thought it was obvious.โ€

โ€œNot that. The shit you pulled with me and Joni?โ€

โ€œYou and Joni?โ€ I asked, feigning innocence. โ€œThere is no you and Joni.โ€

Zipโ€™s jaw clenched and his blue eyes went frosty. โ€œStay out of it.โ€ โ€œStay out of what?โ€

โ€œFor fuckโ€™s sake,โ€ he muttered. He reached into his pocket to retrieve my phone and keys before stalking away to join a few Blue Angels sitting around in folding chairs, coolers of beer nearby.

Smiling to myself, I approached the guy at the grill who was at least ten years older than Darcy. His salt-and-pepper hair was pulled back into a ponytail, his muscled arms heavily inked. He shut the lid of the gas barbecue grill and glanced at me.

โ€œThose for me, darlinโ€™?โ€ he asked, gesturing to the plate of hotdogs. โ€œI think they are.โ€ I handed the plate over and said, โ€œIโ€™m Mia.โ€

He grinned, white teeth appearing through a salt-and-pepper beard. โ€œI know who you are.โ€

โ€œOh, okay.โ€

โ€œWelcome. Grab a beer and get to know the boys.โ€ โ€œIโ€™ll do that,โ€ I murmured.

I had plans to introduce myself to everyone, but Joni was a step ahead of me and took it upon herself to lead me around after she set out the condiments. I sipped on a beer while conversing with Boxerโ€”the blond flirt Iโ€™d met the first day. He was charming and carefree, but I didnโ€™t think for a second he couldnโ€™t be strong and forceful. He was a Blue Angel.

Kids ran around, yelling and laughing. Adults conversed near the salsa and chips while Gray manned the grill. When Boxer left me alone to grab another beer, I escaped. Everyone was nice, but curious, so the questions had been steady for the better part of an hour.

Colt still hadnโ€™t shown up yet.

I wandered away from people, ambling toward a group of kids that were hanging out under a tree. I didnโ€™t know who belonged to whom, but there were eight of them, with more girls than boys, age range varied.

Two of the older girls glanced at me with shy smiles. A young boy, maybe ten years old, was bolder. He got up off the ground and ran toward me, a mop of dark brown hair falling into his eyes. Brushing his hair away from his face, he peered up at me with a huge grin. He was missing his two front teeth, and it only made him cuter.

โ€œHi!โ€ he said.

โ€œHi, there.โ€ โ€œWho are you?โ€

โ€œMia. Who are you?โ€

โ€œCameron. You can call me Cam. Did you know asparagus makes your pee smell funny?โ€

I bit my lip to keep from laughing. As solemnly as I could, I answered, โ€œI did know that.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s been telling everyone that fun little fact,โ€ one of the older girls said, calling out from her spot under the tree.

โ€œWhat happened to your arm?โ€ Cam asked, gesturing to my cast. โ€œOh, I tripped over a tree root.โ€

Camโ€™s brown eyes widened. โ€œReally?โ€ I nodded. โ€œIโ€™m clumsy.โ€

The boy latched onto my uninjured hand and pulled me toward his friends. โ€œWant to sit with us?โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ I said, parking it on the grass and sitting on my haunches so my sundress hit my knees.

Because they were kids and naturally inquisitive, they asked me tons of questions without worrying if they were inappropriate. But they were adorable and full of energy, and before I knew it, we were all engaged in a game of tag and I wasย It.

Pretending to be out of breath and slow, I sank down to my knees. The youngest girl of the groupโ€”a little blond moppet named Lily who happened to be Camโ€™s sisterโ€”approached me.

โ€œHelp!โ€ I panted. โ€œIโ€™m tired!โ€

The girl took another step toward me, coming within my reach. I attacked her with tickles, her shrieks of laughter loud and infectious.

โ€œYouโ€™reย It!โ€ I teased, standing up, brushing the grass off my knees. My dress was dirty, but I didnโ€™t care.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to beย It,โ€ she said. โ€œI want a hotdog.โ€

โ€œMe too,โ€ I said. I held out my hand to her, and she clasped it. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€ I looked at the other kids. โ€œYou guys hungry?โ€

There was a chorus of โ€˜yessesโ€™ and then we were off for food. The gaggle of kids surrounded me. The older girls, who I learned were thirteen

โ€”Allisonโ€™s sister and her friendโ€”were at that age where they thought adults werenโ€™t cool. But they were excited to talk to me. Guess I didnโ€™t scream adult to them. They asked me questions about clothes and makeup, and they brought me into their inner circle.

โ€œWill you fix my hotdog for me?โ€ Lily asked, scrambling up to take a seat on a picnic table bench.

Before I could answer, Darcy jumped in, โ€œYou donโ€™t have to make her a hotdog. I can do that.โ€

โ€œAh, so Lily and Cam belong to you,โ€ I said with a smile. Lily had Darcyโ€™s nose, and their resemblance was easy to see once they were together.

โ€œI claim them,โ€ Darcy said, picking up a paper plate and filling it with a little bit of everything and a hotdog.

โ€œPlain,โ€ Lily reminded her.

Darcy set the plate down in front of Lily and then before the little girl could protest, Darcy had a paper napkin tucked into the front of Lilyโ€™s dress so she wouldnโ€™t get food on herself. โ€œIโ€™m not a baby,โ€ Lily muttered as Darcy moved on, fixing a plate for Cam.

I made my own paper bib and stuck it in the front of my dress. I winked at Lily who giggled. I procured myself a plate of food and was munching away, purposefully getting mustard all over my face to make Lily feel better.

โ€œYouโ€™re messy!โ€

โ€œYes, I am,โ€ I agreed, wiping the mustard off my cheeks.

She lost all interest in me when she looked across the lawn and bellowed, โ€œUncle Colt!โ€ She climbed down from her seat and ran toward him.

I watched in amazement as the broody biker lifted the little girl high in the air above his head. His face was soft and open as he carried Lily back to her seat and plopped her down. She began eating again, a wide smile across her face as she chewed.

โ€œWhat happened to your eye?โ€ she asked Colt.

โ€œI walked into a tree branch,โ€ Colt said, not missing a stride.

โ€œReally?โ€ Cam piped up. โ€œMia tripped on a tree root. You guys are clumsy.โ€

โ€œYes, we really are,โ€ I agreed. I bit my lip to stem a smile.

Colt grinned at me and reached up to wipe something off my cheek. โ€œMustard?โ€ I guessed.

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œDid you stop off and get beer and chips?โ€ I asked him, spearing a piece of watermelon and putting it in my mouth.

โ€œNope.โ€ Colt piled his plate high with potato salad, a hotdog, and a cheeseburger.

โ€œWhat? Oh man, now everyone will think Iโ€™m a bad party guest.โ€ Colt looked at me in amusement. โ€œThis party is for you, you know.โ€ โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ he said, taking a bite of the cheeseburger. โ€œThe guys wanted to meet you.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

He grinned. โ€œWhy do you think?โ€ โ€œBecause Iโ€™m a novelty.โ€

Looking up from his food, he stared at me. โ€œOne of a kind.โ€

Happiness curled through me and I couldnโ€™t stop the grin from spreading across my face.
