BY THE TIMEย I woke up late the next morning with a slight hangover, Colt was gone. Cheese sat on the porch in his customary chair and I waved at him through the front window. The remains of my impromptu party littered the living room. While I sipped on a cup of coffee, I cleaned up. As I threw the last of the empty pizza boxes into the garbage, my cell phone vibrated. I followed the sound of it, wondering where Iโd left it the previous evening. It wasnโt like I had tons of people trying to get in touch with me. Finding it between the couch cushions, I fished it out and answered it.
โHello?โ
โGet dressed,โ Joni commanded. โUmโฆโ
โWeโre going to the clubhouse for a barbecue. So nothing fancy. Jeans will work.โ
โBut IโColtโโ
โYouโre getting sprung, chicken. Everyone wants to meet you.โ โEveryone? Everyone who?โ
โThe club.โ โOh, boy.โ
โYeah, so weโre having a potluck, grilling out. The kids will be there, so itโs just family. Nothing crazy. Promise.โ
I laughed, though part of me was curious about the Blue Angels I was hearing so much about. Iโd only interacted with Zip and Cheese. โOkay, well, what can I bring?โ
โNothing.โ
โI have to bring something. What will these people think of me?โ
โThey know youโre a bit of an invalid and cooking and or stirring things is difficult.โ
โIโm not showing up to a potluck without beer or chips. Iโm not a moocher.โ
โFine, weโll stop by the grocery store on the way.โ โPromise?โ
โPromise. Can you be ready in an hour?โ โYes.โ
โOkay, see you soon.โ
She hung up, and I shook my head. Before I could dial Colt to confirm the potluck, my phone buzzed again.
Colt.
โAre you calling to tell me about the barbecue at the clubhouse?โ I asked.
โYeah. Howโd you know?โ
โYour sister. Sheโs coming to pick me up. I need to hit the store and get some stuff.โ
โNo,โ Colt commanded. โZip will drive you.โ โBut Cheeseโโ
โAs soon as Zip gets to you, Cheese is on party duty.โ โDo I even want to know what that means?โ I asked. โNo.โ I heard the smile in his voice.
โWhy canโt you drive me?โ I demanded. โDo you miss me?โ
โNo,โ I lied. โYouโre just a control freak, so Iโm surprised youโre letting Zip drive me.โ
โIโm in town. Iโll be at the clubhouse later.โ โOkay,โ I said, giving in.
โAnd no grocery store.โ โBut I want to bring things.
โIโll swing by and get some stuff.โ
โGet beer, chips, and a premade salad. Or a fruit tray.โ
โYes, dear,โ Colt chimed like a chastised husband. โThereโs a spare set of house keys in the drawer next to the fridge. Use those to lock up the house.โ
โYes, dear,โ I parroted.
He laughed, the sound easy on my ears. I liked knowing I was responsible for it.
I didnโt call Joni back to tell her not to bother coming over because I had a plan. A plan to get Joni and Zip in the same place and see what happened. It was pure evil, but maybe they needed a push in each otherโs direction. My new friend wanted him, and I wanted to see his reaction to her.
Thanks to Lauraโthe club groupie who had brought over bags of used clothesโI had a wealth of new cute outfits to choose from. I settled on a comfortable spaghetti-strap, blue cotton dress that hit just above the knee. It showed off the freckled skin of my shoulders. I was just putting the finishing touches on my lashes when the doorbell rang. I went downstairs to answer it, glad to see it was Joni looking hot and tall in a pair of dark, skinny-leg jeans, a black, flowy tank top, and long, silver, dangle earrings.
โYou look amazing!โ I stated, waving her inside.
Her high heels clacked on the wood floor as she entered. Smiling, she said, โThanks. You look pretty, too. You ready to go? Cheese can follow
us.โ
โUh, yeah, about that. Colt wanted Zip to drive me.โ โOh.โ She frowned. โThen why am I here?โ
There was a knock on the door and I shot her a look. โJust go with it, okay?โ She nodded, and when I opened the door Zip stood on the porch. Leather cut, wavy blond hair, sharp blue eyesโfocused on Joni.
โHi,โ he greeted. โHey,โ she answered.
โIโm such an idiot,โ I chirped. โJoni offered to give me a ride, and I forgot to call her and tell her you were driving me.โ
โNo sweat,โ Zip said.
โWhy donโt we carpool?โ I suggested.
โIsnโt it easier if Joni takes her car?โ Zip asked.
โShe wants to drink,โ I blurted out. โAnd I donโt want her to drive.โ Zipโs eyes slid to Joni.
โUh, yeah. I want to drink,โ Joni stated. โA lot.โ
โOkay,โ Zip sighed in feigned annoyance, though it appeared to be all for show. โYou guys ready to go?โ
โYeah,โ I said. I grabbed my cell phone off the coffee table and a spare key, realizing that I didnโt have a purse.
โI can hold those for you,โ Zip said after I locked up. Cheese was on his bike. Revving the engine, he waved and then pulled away.
โThanks,โ I said, handing Zip my two items of importance. I was excited to get out of Coltโs house. As comfortable as his home was, I was about to scale the walls just to have something to do.
I climbed into the back of Zipโs black SUV before Joni could. I wanted to give her the front seat. It was unbelievable watching them. They repelled like magnets, except for their gazes. They couldnโt stop looking at one another. I wondered if Colt had any idea about the attraction between his VP and his sister.
The drive to the clubhouse was quiet. I stared out of the window, watching the flat land swish past. The entire ride was filled with tension and silence. When we arrived at the clubhouse, I immediately hopped out of the car, wanting to escape Joni and Zipโs weird bubble of avoidance and sexual tension.
I waited for Joni to get out of the car and then followed her inside. We moved through the expansive living room to the open-designed kitchen. Darcy stood at the granite island, cling-wrapping a plate of raw hamburger patties.
โHey, sugar!โ Darcy greeted, leaning over to give me a cheek brush. โHow did you feel this morning?โ
โSlow to start,โ I admitted. โBut after my second cup of coffee, I felt okay.โ
She nodded. โGirlsโ nights can get rowdy. That one was pretty tame.
Wait until we go out dancing.โ
I paused, surprised that she was already inviting me to another girlsโ night out.
โIโm so glad I didnโt have to work at the hospital today,โ Joni said with a laugh. โI was fairly useless until about ten this morning.โ
โDidnโt we drink the same amount?โ I looked at her. โDid I drink you under the table?โ
โIt would appear that way, yes,โ Joni said with amusement. I gestured with my chin to the counter. โWhat can I do?โ
โTake that plate of hotdogs outside and hand them to Gray. Heโs at the grill.โ
โPut me to work,โ Joni commanded.
โCondiments need to go on the tables,โ Darcy dictated.
โGot it.โ Joni went to the fridge and rooted around the shelves, pulling out bottles of mustard and ketchup. Her butt was on display in her amazing jeans and I caught Zip staring at it.
โZip, find me a prospect and send him in,โ Darcy said. โI need another case of beer brought up from the basement.โ
Zip grinned. โThese parties would be a shit show without you here.โ
Darcy rolled her eyes. โThey turn into a shit show after a few bottles of bourbon.โ
He kissed her cheek on his way toward the hallway. He gestured for me to follow and when we got to the back door, he opened it, allowing me to go out first.
Before I could continue to the grill, Zip put his hand on my arm and stopped me.
โWhat are you doing?โ he asked.
I frowned in confusion and lifted the plate of hotdogs. โI thought it was obvious.โ
โNot that. The shit you pulled with me and Joni?โ
โYou and Joni?โ I asked, feigning innocence. โThere is no you and Joni.โ
Zipโs jaw clenched and his blue eyes went frosty. โStay out of it.โ โStay out of what?โ
โFor fuckโs sake,โ he muttered. He reached into his pocket to retrieve my phone and keys before stalking away to join a few Blue Angels sitting around in folding chairs, coolers of beer nearby.
Smiling to myself, I approached the guy at the grill who was at least ten years older than Darcy. His salt-and-pepper hair was pulled back into a ponytail, his muscled arms heavily inked. He shut the lid of the gas barbecue grill and glanced at me.
โThose for me, darlinโ?โ he asked, gesturing to the plate of hotdogs. โI think they are.โ I handed the plate over and said, โIโm Mia.โ
He grinned, white teeth appearing through a salt-and-pepper beard. โI know who you are.โ
โOh, okay.โ
โWelcome. Grab a beer and get to know the boys.โ โIโll do that,โ I murmured.
I had plans to introduce myself to everyone, but Joni was a step ahead of me and took it upon herself to lead me around after she set out the condiments. I sipped on a beer while conversing with Boxerโthe blond flirt Iโd met the first day. He was charming and carefree, but I didnโt think for a second he couldnโt be strong and forceful. He was a Blue Angel.
Kids ran around, yelling and laughing. Adults conversed near the salsa and chips while Gray manned the grill. When Boxer left me alone to grab another beer, I escaped. Everyone was nice, but curious, so the questions had been steady for the better part of an hour.
Colt still hadnโt shown up yet.
I wandered away from people, ambling toward a group of kids that were hanging out under a tree. I didnโt know who belonged to whom, but there were eight of them, with more girls than boys, age range varied.
Two of the older girls glanced at me with shy smiles. A young boy, maybe ten years old, was bolder. He got up off the ground and ran toward me, a mop of dark brown hair falling into his eyes. Brushing his hair away from his face, he peered up at me with a huge grin. He was missing his two front teeth, and it only made him cuter.
โHi!โ he said.
โHi, there.โ โWho are you?โ
โMia. Who are you?โ
โCameron. You can call me Cam. Did you know asparagus makes your pee smell funny?โ
I bit my lip to keep from laughing. As solemnly as I could, I answered, โI did know that.โ
โHeโs been telling everyone that fun little fact,โ one of the older girls said, calling out from her spot under the tree.
โWhat happened to your arm?โ Cam asked, gesturing to my cast. โOh, I tripped over a tree root.โ
Camโs brown eyes widened. โReally?โ I nodded. โIโm clumsy.โ
The boy latched onto my uninjured hand and pulled me toward his friends. โWant to sit with us?โ
โSure,โ I said, parking it on the grass and sitting on my haunches so my sundress hit my knees.
Because they were kids and naturally inquisitive, they asked me tons of questions without worrying if they were inappropriate. But they were adorable and full of energy, and before I knew it, we were all engaged in a game of tag and I wasย It.
Pretending to be out of breath and slow, I sank down to my knees. The youngest girl of the groupโa little blond moppet named Lily who happened to be Camโs sisterโapproached me.
โHelp!โ I panted. โIโm tired!โ
The girl took another step toward me, coming within my reach. I attacked her with tickles, her shrieks of laughter loud and infectious.
โYouโreย It!โ I teased, standing up, brushing the grass off my knees. My dress was dirty, but I didnโt care.
โI donโt want to beย It,โ she said. โI want a hotdog.โ
โMe too,โ I said. I held out my hand to her, and she clasped it. โLetโs go.โ I looked at the other kids. โYou guys hungry?โ
There was a chorus of โyessesโ and then we were off for food. The gaggle of kids surrounded me. The older girls, who I learned were thirteen
โAllisonโs sister and her friendโwere at that age where they thought adults werenโt cool. But they were excited to talk to me. Guess I didnโt scream adult to them. They asked me questions about clothes and makeup, and they brought me into their inner circle.
โWill you fix my hotdog for me?โ Lily asked, scrambling up to take a seat on a picnic table bench.
Before I could answer, Darcy jumped in, โYou donโt have to make her a hotdog. I can do that.โ
โAh, so Lily and Cam belong to you,โ I said with a smile. Lily had Darcyโs nose, and their resemblance was easy to see once they were together.
โI claim them,โ Darcy said, picking up a paper plate and filling it with a little bit of everything and a hotdog.
โPlain,โ Lily reminded her.
Darcy set the plate down in front of Lily and then before the little girl could protest, Darcy had a paper napkin tucked into the front of Lilyโs dress so she wouldnโt get food on herself. โIโm not a baby,โ Lily muttered as Darcy moved on, fixing a plate for Cam.
I made my own paper bib and stuck it in the front of my dress. I winked at Lily who giggled. I procured myself a plate of food and was munching away, purposefully getting mustard all over my face to make Lily feel better.
โYouโre messy!โ
โYes, I am,โ I agreed, wiping the mustard off my cheeks.
She lost all interest in me when she looked across the lawn and bellowed, โUncle Colt!โ She climbed down from her seat and ran toward him.
I watched in amazement as the broody biker lifted the little girl high in the air above his head. His face was soft and open as he carried Lily back to her seat and plopped her down. She began eating again, a wide smile across her face as she chewed.
โWhat happened to your eye?โ she asked Colt.
โI walked into a tree branch,โ Colt said, not missing a stride.
โReally?โ Cam piped up. โMia tripped on a tree root. You guys are clumsy.โ
โYes, we really are,โ I agreed. I bit my lip to stem a smile.
Colt grinned at me and reached up to wipe something off my cheek. โMustard?โ I guessed.
โYeah.โ
โDid you stop off and get beer and chips?โ I asked him, spearing a piece of watermelon and putting it in my mouth.
โNope.โ Colt piled his plate high with potato salad, a hotdog, and a cheeseburger.
โWhat? Oh man, now everyone will think Iโm a bad party guest.โ Colt looked at me in amusement. โThis party is for you, you know.โ โReally?โ
โYeah,โ he said, taking a bite of the cheeseburger. โThe guys wanted to meet you.โ
โWhy?โ
He grinned. โWhy do you think?โ โBecause Iโm a novelty.โ
Looking up from his food, he stared at me. โOne of a kind.โ
Happiness curled through me and I couldnโt stop the grin from spreading across my face.
