Chapter no 15 – ALLIE

The Legacy (Off-Campus, #5)

Sabrina James, soon to be Sabrina Tucker, is one of those obnoxiously beautiful women who turns every head when she walks into a room. Iโ€™m talking glossy

dark hair, bottomless brown eyes, and a perfect body that shows zero signs of having ever carried a child. If I didnโ€™t know her, Iโ€™d probably hate her. Or, at the very least, die of jealousy. And not only is this girl stunning, but sheโ€™s about to graduate from law school. Ergo, beautyย andย brains. Some people are just born lucky.

Still, itโ€™s very hard to dislike Sabrina once you get to know her. Sheโ€™s a ride-or-die type of friend, loyal to the core, and funnier than her aloof exterior suggests.

When she enters the private tearoom, a brilliant smile lights her face. As if itโ€™s an unexpected joy to find all of us here, even though sheโ€™d helped plan this.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe youโ€™re all here.โ€ An uncharacteristic note of emotion trembles in her voice. Sabrina is usually cool as a cucumber. Self-assured. She doesnโ€™t get emotional. But Iโ€™m pretty sure there are tears clinging to her impossibly long lashes as she clutches little Jamie in her arms.

The three-year-old, meanwhile, is clamoring to get down and not get squeezed to death by her momโ€™s anaconda

arms.

At Sabrinaโ€™s request, the guest list was kept small, so our little group barely makes a dent in the large, elegant room. Sabrinaโ€™s never been a social butterfly, though. She worked her way through college, then had a kid right before starting law school, which doesnโ€™t leave much time for socializing. Our group today is comprised of me, Hannah and Grace; Deanโ€™s sister Summer; Hope and Carin, Sabrinaโ€™s best friends from Briar; and Samantha and Kelsey, two friends from Harvard Law.

But itโ€™s Jamie who captures everyoneโ€™s attention. The toddler has Tuckerโ€™s dark red hair and Sabrinaโ€™s big chocolate-brown eyes. Sheโ€™s the perfect combination of the two of them, and I have no doubt sheโ€™ll be just as gorgeous. This morning sheโ€™s wearing a purple dress with a tutu skirt, her hair arranged in two pigtails.

โ€œAuntie Allie!โ€ she shrieks before flinging a pair of chubby arms around my knees.

I bend down so I can hug her proper. โ€œHey, princess,โ€ I say, using Deanโ€™s nickname for her. Everyone seems to have their own pet name for Jamie. Garrett calls her gumdrop. Logan calls her squirt. Hopeโ€™s husband Dโ€™Andre calls her snickerdoodle, which I think might be my favorite one.

โ€œOh my goodness, is that a tiara?โ€ I say, admiring the sparkling silver crown atop her auburn head.

โ€œYa! Daddy got it for me!โ€ Proudly, Jamie shows the tiara off to the entire group, as we all ooh and aah accordingly.

Then we mill around and chat amongst ourselves until an elegantly dressed hotel employee arrives to announce that tea will be served soon.

โ€œAre you excited, little one?โ€ Sabrina asks her daughter. โ€œWeโ€™re about to have tea. Like Alice.โ€

โ€œLike Alice!โ€ Jamie shouts, because young children donโ€™t come with a volume dial. I donโ€™t think Jamie Tucker has any concept of the wordย loud.

We all settle around the table at our assigned seats. Iโ€™m between Hannah and Summer, with Sabrina and Jamie directly across from us. The moment she settles in her booster seat, Jamie tries to snatch a teacup off the crisp, floral tablecloth on the beautifully set table. Sabrina intervenes like a pro, blocking Jamieโ€™s hand as skillfully as a goalie making a clutch save.

โ€œNo, this cup is Auntie Hopeโ€™s,โ€ she says, moving the fine china toward the grinning woman with the dark braids. โ€œThisย one is for you.โ€

I hide a smile. Jamieโ€™s cup is clearly made of plastic.

โ€œWeโ€™re going through a butterfingers phase,โ€ Sabrina explains, catching my knowing smile. โ€œNo china for this one. Itโ€™ll cost a fortune to replace all the cups she drops.โ€

As a trio of servers appear to pour our tea, I notice Hannahโ€™s looking a bit pale. I nudge her gently. โ€œYou okay?โ€ I murmur.

โ€œIโ€™m fine. Just a bit queasy,โ€ she says. โ€œNot sure wolfing down a fully loaded omelet right before bed last night was a good idea.โ€

โ€œI think they said one of these is a ginger tea? Thatโ€™ll help with the queasiness.โ€ I glance at the male server who approaches us. โ€œYou said something about ginger? Can we try that one, please?โ€

โ€œOf course, madam.โ€

Madam.ย I donโ€™t know if that makes me feel fancy or just old.

โ€œSmells good,โ€ Hannah says as she brings the teacup to her mouth. She takes a dainty sip. โ€œPerfect. Just what I need.โ€

Across the table, Jamie adorably mimics Hannah. โ€œMmmmmm!โ€ she announces, slurping her tea. โ€œPerfect!โ€

Everyoneโ€™s trying not to laugh.

โ€œShe actually likes tea?โ€ Kelsey says from Sabrinaโ€™s other side, sounding surprised. โ€œItโ€™s not too bitter for her?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s G-R-A-P-E J-U-I-C-E,โ€ Sabrina spells out, grinning. โ€œThereโ€™s no way Iโ€™m pumping this kid full of caffeine. Are you crazy?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s decaf,โ€ Carin points out.

โ€œIโ€™m not taking the chance she accidentally ingests something else. Not after last yearโ€™s coffee debacle. She was so wired, Tuck almost took her to the ER.โ€

The servers bring out the first round of sandwiches on extravagant three-tiered trays. And for the next hour and a half, the trays keep coming. I feel like Iโ€™m acting out a scene fromย Downton Abbeyย as we munch on tiny cucumber sandwiches and stuffed macaroons. Despite it being Sabrinaโ€™s day, Jamie is the obvious star of the morning. Sheโ€™s smart as a whip and so damn sweet, reminding me a lot of Tucker. And just when I think she couldnโ€™t get any cuter, I discover she has this weird new habit of asking everyone if theyโ€™re okay, which she proceeds to do while skipping around the table.

โ€œAre you okay, Auntie Samanda?โ€ she asks, pausing next to Samanthaโ€™s chair.

Sabrinaโ€™s Harvard friend is clearly fighting a laugh. โ€œIโ€™m wonderful, thank you for asking.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€ With a big, beaming smile, Jamie moves to the next seat, which happens to belong to me.

โ€œAre you okay, Auntie Allie?โ€ she inquires. My lips twitch. โ€œIโ€™m doing great, princess.โ€

She moves over. โ€œAre you okay, Auntie โ€™Annah?โ€ Hannah smiles indulgently. โ€œIโ€™m great, gumdrop.โ€

Jamie skips down the line. I gaze at Sabrina and say, โ€œSheโ€™s a lot calmer than the last time I saw her.โ€ It was back in the fall, and Jamie had been a total terror, streaking around the room getting into mischief.

โ€œTrust me, sheโ€™s still a nightmare,โ€ Sabrina answers. โ€œI made sure she got a nap in after breakfast. Tried to wear her out before we got here so sheโ€™d be calmer.โ€

Our servers return to top off everyoneโ€™s teacups, and the conversation shifts from Jamie to tonightโ€™s wedding reception. The ceremony itself is taking place about an hour before that, but itโ€™s a private event. Just Sabrina and Tucker, and Tuckerโ€™s mom.

A fact that Carin is pouting over. โ€œI canโ€™t believe we wonโ€™t get to see you recite your vows.โ€

Hope snorts. โ€œI can. No way was this bitโ€”B-I-T-C-H going to pour her heart out in front of two hundred people.โ€

Sabrina grins at that. โ€œYou know me well, Hopeless.โ€ She shrugs. โ€œIt was our compromise. Tuck gets a huge reception, and I get to tell him how much I love him without four hundred pairs of eyes staring at me.โ€

Next to me, Summer is also pouting. โ€œIโ€™m so jealous youโ€™re getting married,โ€ she tells Sabrina. โ€œHonestly, I cannot believe Fitzy hasnโ€™t asked me to marry him yet. The nerve of that man.โ€

I raise an eyebrow. โ€œYouโ€™re only twenty-two,โ€ I remind her.

She tosses her silky golden hair over her shoulder. โ€œSo?

Twenty-two-year-olds arenโ€™t allowed to get married?โ€

โ€œNo, of course they are. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ Itโ€™s young. Iโ€™m turning twenty-five soon, and I definitely donโ€™t want to get married right now.โ€

Summer waves a flippant hand. โ€œTwenty-five? Oh my God. Youโ€™re practically an old maid.โ€ Her twinkling green eyes tell me sheโ€™s joking. โ€œI donโ€™t know, I just always imagined myself getting married young. And being a young mom,โ€ she admits. โ€œI want to have at least four kids.โ€

โ€œFour?โ€ I sputter.

She beams. โ€œFour big strapping boys like their dad.โ€

Sabrina snickers. โ€œTalk to me after the first one. Letโ€™s see if you still want the other three.โ€

Summer defends her stance. โ€œI love having two brothers, and Fitz is an only child, so I think heโ€™d enjoy

having a big family.โ€ She sticks out her bottom lip. โ€œAll of that is moot, though, because the jerk is not asking me.โ€ She gasps. โ€œOh my God. What if he doesnโ€™t think Iโ€™m his forever person?โ€ Before anyone can answer, she releases a rushed breath, then starts to laugh. โ€œOkay, thatโ€™s just crazy. Of course Iโ€™m his forever person. Jeez.โ€

I just nod along. I learned a long time ago that Summer Heyward-Di Laurentis is capable of having entire conversations all by herself.

Suddenly, she turns it on me. โ€œWait. Are you actually telling me you wouldnโ€™t marry Dicky if he asked you right now?โ€ she challenges.

Deanโ€™s childhood nickname makes me grin. โ€œWell, heโ€™s not asking, so that question is also moot.โ€

โ€œBut if he was?โ€ she pushes. โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t say yes?โ€ โ€œIโ€ฆI donโ€™t know. Truthfully, I probably wouldnโ€™t even let

him ask.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Hannah looks startled.

I shrug, because I donโ€™t know how to put it into words.

Itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t love Dean. Of course I do. And of course I envision us getting married and having a family one day.ย One dayย being the operative words.

Grace joins the discussion, one eyebrow raised. โ€œAre you saying he might not be your forever person?โ€

That summons a growl from Summer. โ€œYou better not be saying that, because I already have a design in mind for our custom sisters-in-law Christmas onesies.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not saying that at all,โ€ I protest. โ€œDean is absolutely my forever person. Weโ€™re end game. But to me, getting engaged isnโ€™t just one step. Itโ€™s, like, three steps all joined together. An engagement should be immediately followed by getting married, which should be closely followed by starting a family, and Iโ€™m not ready for any of those steps. Being a mom in the near future sounds terrifying to me.โ€ I glance over at Sabrina. โ€œNo offense.โ€

โ€œNone taken.โ€ She offers a dry smile. โ€œIt was terrifying to me too. Getting pregnant my senior year of college was definitely not part of the plan. If youโ€™re not ready to have a kid, donโ€™t let anyone pressure you into it.โ€

โ€œDeanโ€™s not pressuring me,โ€ I assure her. โ€œBut like I said, all those steps are connected for me. Iโ€™d rather get married when I know Iโ€™m ready for the rest of it. Just do it all at once, know what I mean? I think Iโ€™m explaining this badly.โ€

Summer shrugs. โ€œNo, that makes sense. See, I donโ€™t care if Iโ€™m engaged for like five years. Iโ€™d just be happy having something sparkly to wear while I wait for the go- ahead to plan the most epic wedding.โ€ She holds out her hand, which is already covered in sparkly things. Summer is basically a fashion icon. Expensive clothes and jewelry are her religion.

โ€œYou look like youโ€™re doing okay for now,โ€ I say with a smile.

โ€œThatโ€™s different. I want one from Fitzy. And I canโ€™t wait to design my own wedding gown.โ€ She gives Sabrina a stern look. โ€œAnd you, youโ€™d better be wearing your dress at the reception. Iโ€™m dying to see it.โ€

Sabrina flushes slightly. โ€œItโ€™s really not anything fancy,โ€ she tells Deanโ€™s fashionista little sister.

โ€œDoesnโ€™t matter. I know youโ€™re going to look beautiful in it regardless,โ€ Summer proclaims. Her green eyes dance happily. โ€œOh, I love weddings so much! Are you excited? This is so exciting!โ€

โ€œSO EXCITING!โ€ Jamie randomly shouts out. Then she peers up at her mom. โ€œWhatโ€™s exciting?โ€

Sabrina laughs. โ€œLife,โ€ she tells her daughter. โ€œAnd yes, I am excited. Although thatโ€™s another thing that wasnโ€™t part of the planโ€”getting married. But Tuck and I already have a kid together. And heโ€™s the one I want to be with for the rest of my life, soโ€ฆโ€ She trails off with a shrug.

The answering chorus of awws makes her blush harder.

โ€œMummy, youโ€™re all red.โ€ Jamie climbs into her motherโ€™s lap and pokes Sabrinaโ€™s cheek with one sticky finger.

Sabrina narrows her eyes. โ€œAnd you are covered in chocolate.โ€

I suddenly realize there are chocolate smears all over Jamieโ€™s rosebud mouth.

โ€œWhere the heck did she get chocolate from?โ€ Sabrina asks.

Everyone looks around the table. Most of the pastries have been devoured, and the ones left are mostly sugar cookies. Weโ€™d annihilated anything with chocolate fairly fast.

โ€œAuntie Carinโ€™s cookie fell on the floor and I picked it up and ate it!โ€ Jamie announces proudly, and I almost choke on my laughter.

Sabrina sighs. โ€œAll right. Letโ€™s get you cleaned up, little one.โ€

She grabs a napkin and wipes Jamieโ€™s chocolate- smeared mouth. No sooner does she put the crumpled napkin down than Jamie shoves a cream-filled pastry in her mouth, and now sheโ€™s got icing sugar all over her face.

Sabrina reaches for another napkin.

Oh man. Kids are exhausting. Witnessing Sabrinaโ€™s infinite supply of patience is something else. And it just cements my decision to postpone all those pesky steps until later in my life.

Much, much later.
