Chapter no 6 – โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒJOLENE WAS A BLONDE WITH A DEATH WISH AOIFE

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

GROOMEDย to within an inch of my life, and with three quarters of a bottle of Prosecco in my system, I leaned back on the couch in Katieโ€™s boyfriendโ€™s living room, feeling like I had taken a trip back in time.

Whoever was on the decks clearly had a hard on for 90โ€™s music, because Bloodhound Gangโ€™sย The Bad Touchย was just the latest in a long list of songs from the previous decade.

Feeling buzzed, I watched as Casey backed her ass up against some dark- haired boy from Tommen and feigned a stagger.

I rolled my eyes when he grabbed her hips to steady her, which was exactly what she wanted.

She wasย soย predictable.

โ€œThanks,โ€ Casey said, beaming up at him. โ€œNo problem.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s your name?โ€ she asked, stepping closer.

โ€œPatrick,โ€ he told her, offering her a shy smile. โ€œWhatโ€™s yours?โ€

Run, Patrick, run, I felt like shouting,ย sheโ€™s going to eat you alive, you poor, innocent fool.

โ€œIโ€™m Casey.โ€ With one hand curled around his neck, she fisted his shirt with the other and tugged his big body close against her. โ€œSo, Patrick.โ€ Trailing her hand from his neck to his cheek, she pulled his face down to hers and beamed up at him. โ€œWhat year are you in?โ€

โ€œFifth year, you?โ€ โ€œSixth year.โ€

โ€œAt BCS?โ€

โ€œUh-huh. Do you play rugby, Patrick?โ€ He nodded. โ€œIโ€™m an inside center.โ€

โ€œExcellent.โ€

Yeah, my best friend was the meaning behind thatย small but fierceย saying. She needed a wing woman like a fish needed rollerblades.

โ€œThatโ€™s Patrick Feely,โ€ Katie explained in my ear. โ€œHeโ€™s good friends

with Hugh.โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s Hughโ€™s younger sister, right?โ€ I asked, pointing out the stunning blonde with a head of to-die-for curls, who was sitting on the couch opposite us, dressed as Baby Spice.

I watched, completely invested in the animated conversation she was having with an equally beautiful blond boy dressed like a Malibu Ken doll I used to own back in the day. They were all smiles and hands flailing as they talked and laughed and touched each other.

โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s Claire,โ€ Katie replied. โ€œSheโ€™s probably one of the sweetest girls that youโ€™ll ever meet.โ€

I narrowed my eyes as recognition flickered through me. โ€œWait a minute.

I think I know that guy sheโ€™s talking to.โ€

โ€œEverybody knows Gerard Gibson,โ€ Katie chuckled. โ€œHe offered Joey a condom in Biddies once.โ€

โ€œSounds very Gibsie-like.โ€ Katie bit back a laugh. โ€œHeโ€™s, uh, well, letโ€™s

just say that heโ€™s one of a kind. He sort of lives in his own world.โ€

B*Witchedโ€™sย Cโ€™est la Vieย started to play and I swear to God, this Gibsie boy all but levitated from the couch with excitement, dragging Claire along with him.

โ€œShe clearly lives in that world with him,โ€ I mused, feeling myself smile for the first time in weeks, as I watched them.

Bopping around and throwing shapes like nobody was watching, Gibsie and Claire danced around the living room to what was clearly their jam. Him spinning her out and then pulling her back to his chest as they stumble- waltzed to the music.

โ€œIโ€™m guessing theyโ€™ve been together since forever, am I right?โ€ โ€œTheyโ€™re actually not together at all.โ€

โ€œBullshit.โ€ I pointed to where they had moved to the middle of the makeshift dance floor. โ€œLook at that boy. Heโ€™s clearly besotted with her, and sheโ€™s staring at him all gooey-eyed like he hung the moon.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œNah, K, theyโ€™re clearly doing the deed.โ€

โ€œI swear,โ€ Katie laughed. โ€œTheyโ€™re really not.โ€

I cocked a disbelieving brow as I watched them break into an impressive Irish dancing set jig. Completely in sync with each otherโ€™s bodies, and with

their entire focus on the other, they laughed and danced it out to the beat, uncaring that a huge portion of their schoolmates were watching them.

โ€œNo way,โ€ I choked out a laugh. โ€œBoy moves like lord of the dance.โ€

โ€œPretty sure his mam made him take Irish dancing lessons in primary school,โ€ Katie giggled. โ€œThereโ€™s a bunch of medals on display in the cabinet in Hughโ€™s front room from Feis competitions that they competed in.โ€

โ€œWho? Gibsie and Claire?โ€ She nodded.

โ€œAw, theyย dancedย together?โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ Katie laughed. โ€œUntil he hung his dancing shoes up for rugby boots.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re honestly trying to tell me that those two arenโ€™t in love?โ€

โ€œI never said they werenโ€™t in love.โ€ Chuckling, she added, โ€œOnly that theyโ€™re not together.โ€

โ€œHm.โ€ I eyed them, entirely unconvinced that they werenโ€™t. โ€œWell, they look gorgeous together. And I love the color of her hair,โ€ I added, secretly envious. โ€œThose curls are amazing.โ€

โ€œThe color and curls are totally natural,โ€ Katie offered, sounding just as wistful as I felt. โ€œHughโ€™s hair is the same.โ€

โ€œJoey has curls, too, but he keeps them chopped off. He always keeps the sides and back of his head shaved tight, and leaves a bit more on top, but if he doesnโ€™t cut his hair for a few weeks, it grows all wild and curly on top like Seany-booโ€™s. Itโ€™s so adorable,โ€ I heard myself say, and then scrunched my nose in despair. โ€œSorry.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be sorry, Aoif,โ€ she replied softly. โ€œIโ€™m honestly surprised you came tonight. I know Casey practically dragged you out, but I wouldnโ€™t have blamed you if you didnโ€™t come.โ€ Releasing a heavy sigh, she hooked her arm through mine and said, โ€œI know youโ€™ve been in love with him since forever, and feelings donโ€™t switch off overnight, so if this gets too much for you, or you want to go home at any time, you just say, and Iโ€™ll get one of Hughโ€™s friends to drive you.โ€

โ€œThanks, Katie,โ€ I replied, resting my cheek on her shoulder. โ€œSo, theyโ€™re really not together?โ€ I asked, inclining my chin to where Gibsie and Claire now resembled something straight out of a Gene Simmons tribute act, as they jammed it out to Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogueโ€™sย Kids.

He was strewn out on the flat of his back, singing to his heartโ€™s content into his imaginary microphone, while she straddled his hips and joined him.

โ€œUh-oh,โ€ Katie snickered, watching as her boyfriend came thundering towards them. โ€œHughieโ€™s going to freak.โ€

Holding a hand up to warn her brother off, Claire continued to bop her head and drum one-handedly to the music, while Gibsie folded his arms behind his head and grinned sheepishly up at her brother.

โ€œOh crap,โ€ Katie groaned then, dragging my attention back to her.

โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked. โ€œHeโ€™s hardly going to lose it over his sister dancing with his buddy.โ€

“Not him,โ€ Katie strangled out, pointing towards the doorway that led to the kitchen. โ€œHim.โ€

Craning my neck, I followed her line of sight, only for every muscle in my body to lock tight when my eyes landed onย Joey.

โ€œOh my god.โ€ The air escaped my lungs in a breathy rush and I quickly jerked my gaze away. โ€œWhatโ€™s he doing here?โ€ Panic-stricken, I looked to my friend for help. โ€œKatie, what isย heย doing here?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ she choked out, shaking her head. โ€œI have no idea.โ€

โ€œOh, Jesus.โ€ Dropping my head in my hands, I groaned loudly, while my stomach twisted up in knots and my knees started to bop nervously. โ€œYou said he wouldnโ€™t be here.โ€

โ€œHe shouldnโ€™t be,โ€ she protested. โ€œI know that Claire is friends with his sister, but I didnโ€™t think that he and Hugh were friends.โ€

โ€œOh my god.โ€ My stomach churned and I felt faint. โ€œI need to get out of here.โ€

โ€œNo, you donโ€™t have to,โ€ she hurried to soothe, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. โ€œItโ€™s okay. Just calm down and take a breath.โ€

It was at this exact moment that Casey burst through the crowd, squealing, โ€œHeโ€™s here, heโ€™s here, oh my Jesus, heโ€™s here!โ€

โ€œDoes he look okay?โ€ I heard myself strangle out, peeking between my hands at my friends. โ€œIs he fighting?โ€ My heart seized in my chest and I forced out the words, โ€œIs he high?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure,โ€ Casey replied, voice slurred. โ€œHeโ€™s definitely not fighting, but heโ€™s too far away to tell if heโ€™s buzzed or not.โ€ She craned her neck to see better and, a few seconds later, let out a furious growl. โ€œSo, apparently Dolly was wrong when she said Jolene was a redhead.โ€ Inclining her head towards the kitchen, she hissed, โ€œIt turns out sheโ€™s a blonde with a death wish.โ€

โ€œOh god,โ€ Katie groaned, sounding queasy. โ€œPlease tell me he isnโ€™t?โ€

Heart hammering violently in my chest, I forced myself to inhale a few steadying breaths before daring to glance in his direction again.

Dressed in dark jeans, and a fitted navy shirt, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, Joey leaned against the kitchen island.

With his arms folded across his chest, he stared down at the floor, looking mildly amused, as the blonde, who was sitting on the island beside him, swung her feet back and forth as she talked to him.

Pain.

It hit me so hard and fast that I honestly thought I would crack down the center.

โ€œOh no, guys, thatโ€™s only Lizzie,โ€ Katie was quick to point out. โ€œSheโ€™s in third year at Tommen. Sheโ€™s best friends with Claire.โ€

โ€œMaybe for now,โ€ Casey corrected hotly. โ€œSoon, sheโ€™ll just be known as the girl I went to prison for killing.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re drunk, Casey. Put your claws away,โ€ Katie snapped, before turning her attention back to me. โ€œSheโ€™s probably friends with his sister, too, and thatโ€™s why heโ€™s talking to her,โ€ she offered calmly. โ€œTheyโ€™re only talking, Aoif. It looks completely innocent.โ€

โ€œOh, please,โ€ Casey slurred, swatting the air like it had offended her. โ€œDonโ€™t be so naรฏve, Katie. Thereโ€™s nothing innocent about that Mischa Barton wannabe.โ€

โ€œI know you have nothing but good intentions, but right now, youโ€™re causing more harm than good,โ€ Katie grumbled. โ€œAoife doesnโ€™t need this. She doesnโ€™t need to hear your inner running commentary, Case.โ€

โ€œMaybe she doesnโ€™t,โ€ Casey declared before bounding off in the direction of the kitchen. โ€œBut heโ€™s going to.โ€

โ€œOh, this is so bad, Katie.โ€ Jerking unsteadily to my feet, I pressed my fingers to my temples and watched in horror as Casey rounded on Joey in the kitchen. โ€œYou know what she gets like. She can be a messy drunk at the best of times.โ€

โ€œThen you need to go over there.โ€

โ€œIย canโ€™t,โ€ย I choked out, feeling starved for oxygen at the prospect of having to face him again. โ€œIโ€™m not nearly drunk enough to jump back in the ring with him.โ€

โ€œYou have to,โ€ she urged, pushing me towards the doorway. โ€œTheyโ€™re arguing over you. You need to get in there and diffuse it.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYou go and get Casey, and Iโ€™ll find Patrick Feely. Heโ€™s not drinking tonight, so heโ€™ll give you guys a spin home.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t go over there.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have a choice.โ€ โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYes, Aoife.

โ€œOkay, okay, fine!โ€ Exhaling a ragged breath, I shook my hands out and sucked in a deep, calming breath, before forcing myself to walk into the kitchen to face him.
