โYOUโRE FIERCE QUIET, JOEY SON.โ
โIโm grand, Tony.โ
โAre you sure? Youโre as pale as a ghost and havenโt had a whole pile to say for yourself all week.โ
โItโs all good.โ
โYou and Aoife havenโtโฆโ He let his words trail off, but kept his worried eyes on me, waiting for an explanation.
โWeโre grand, Tony,โ I fed him the lie he wanted to hear before turning my attention back to the ratchet in my hand. โEverythingโs grand.โ
โThank Jesus for that.โ Relief flashed in his eyes. โThen you wouldnโt happen to have any idea whatโs after getting into her? Sheโs walking around the house with a face like thunder.โ
โNo clue.โย Liar.
โReally?โ He scratched his jaw in confusion. โYouโre usually the first to know when thereโs drama.โ
โThink she had a fight with Casey over the Christmas.โ โDid she now?โ
I couldnโt explain why the words โwe broke upโ refused to come out of my mouth. Or worse, why I lied and placed the blame on her best friend instead, but I did it. โYeah.โ I nodded, following through on my bullshit. โI think I heard something about that.โ
โJaysus, it must have been one hell of a fight,โ he stated, watching me from the other side of the car we were working on. โSheโs been hysterical for days now. Crying herself to sleep most nights.โ
Fuck.ย โShe has?โ Her father nodded.
My heart sank into my ass. โJesus.โ
โYou should have a word with her,โ he added, turning his attention back to the task at hand. โShe listens to you. Get her to patch things up with young Casey before she floods the house with tears.โ
โYeah, Iโll, ah, Iโll call her after work,โ I managed to squeeze out, though it was hard to breathe let alone talk.
Because this was on me. Molloyโs tears were on me.
This whole damn mess was a result of my inability to resist the pull of my fucked-up DNA.
Feeling like my heart was constricting to the point of explosion, I set the ratchet down and moved for the back door. โIโll be back in five.โ
โPack those damn cigarettes in for the new year,โ he called after me, but his tone was jokey enough.
Either way, we both knew that I wasnโt going to quit.
Not when I had already given up so much.
Slipping out back, I placed the cigarette balancing on my ear between my lips and grabbed a lighter from the pocket of my coveralls.
Sparking up, I inhaled a deep breath and sagged against the wall at my back, feeling a million different emotions rushing through me.
Exhaling a cloud of smoke, I fought an internal battle with myself toย notย throw in the towel and do exactly what I knew I would. In the end, it was only a matter of minutes before I grabbed my phone โ the same phone that I had to pry from my brotherโs fingers this morning.
Blowing out a frustrated breath, I unlocked the screen, declined another call from Shane, brought up the nameย Molloyย in my contacts, and pressed call.
She answered on the fourth ring but didnโt greet me. I didnโt blame her.
I didnโt deserve to be greeted.
If anything, I deserved to be hung up on.
โItโs me,โ I said quietly, taking another drag of my smoke. โCan you talk?โ
The hustle and bustle in the background let me know that she was at work.
When it grew quieter on the other line, I knew she must have moved to someplace quiet.
โOkay,โ she finally said down the line. โI can hear you.โ โAre you at work?โ
โNo,โ she bit out, tone laced with venomous sarcasm. โIโm out on the town with my new boyfriend.โ
Taking her bitchiness on the chin, I took another drag of my smoke before asking, โAnd howโs he treating you?โ
โA hell of a lot better than the last asshole I made the mistake of falling for,โ came her smart-ass response. โWhat do you want, Joe?โ
โI justโฆโ Shaking my head, I blew out a pained breath before saying, โI wanted to check in on you.โ
โWhy?โ
โYou know why, Molloy.โ Shrugging helplessly, I concentrated on a spot of dirt on the path. โI didnโt flip a switch and turn my feelings offโโ
โDonโt,โ she choked out, emotion overtaking her sarcasm. โNot when I have three more hours at work to get through.โ
Retracting my words, I bit back a pained growl and steered the conversation in another direction. โTony said that youโve been crying.โ
โAnd?โ
โAnd?โ I shook my head. โIt fucking guts me to hear that. I donโt want you to cry, Molloy.โ
โWell, unfortunately, thatโs usually what happens to a girl when her boyfriend sacks her off.โ
โStop.โ I flinched, hating both the words and the pain in her voice. โI didnโt sack you off.โ
โYou broke up with me, Joey,โ she replied, tone thick. โYou can wrap it up as sweetly as you want, but in the end, thatโs exactly what you did.โ
โI still love you.โ
I heard her sudden intake of breath, but she didnโt say anything for a long beat. โDonโt.โ
โI fucking love you, Aoife Molloy,โ I repeated, focusing on an oil stain on the back wall of the garage. โI always will.โ
โThen take it back.โ
โI canโt.โ I shook my head, feeling like my heart was splitting clean down the center. โIโm not good for you.โ
All I wanted to do was sprint over to The Dinniman and wrap her up in my arms, but I couldnโt afford to make another mistake with this girl.
Not when Iโd already crushed her. โAre you clean?โ
I closed my eyes and nodded weakly. โYes.โ
โSince when?โ
โI havenโt touched anything since that night.โ โBecause youโre turning over a new leaf?โ
โBecause Iโm fucking ashamed of myself,โ I came right out and told her.
โOf what I exposed you to. How I treated you.โ
There was a long stretch of silence, where I swear that I could hear the sound of my own heart thundering in my ears, before she spoke again. โSo, two weeks without anything, huh?โ
I nodded again. โYes.โ
โYeah, Iโll be back in five,โ I heard her say. โIโm owed a cigarette breakโฆ Yes, Julie, I know I donโt smoke, but I cover for you at least seven
times a day when you take yours, so Iโm having one.โ The line was muffled for a few moments before she returned. โOkay, Iโm back. Julieโs just being a greedy bitch.โ
โPicking fights with co-workers, Molloy?โ
โNo more than usual.โ There was a bite to her tone that she didnโt try to conceal. โAnd Shane Holland? How many weeks have you beenย cleanย of him?โ
โThe same.โ
โHow can I believe you?โ
โI donโt know.โ I exhaled a heavy sigh. โAll I have is my word.โ
โI want to believe you, Joe,โ she whispered down the line. โSo badly.โ
But you canโt.ย โI get it,โ I replied, roughly clearing my throat. โWe both know that I havenโt been the kind of fella you could put your faith in.โ
โYou didnโt call.โ The accusation was there in her voice. โNot once.โ
โI couldnโt.โ Grimacing in what felt like physical pain, I forced myself to give her my truth. โI only got my phone back this morning.โ
โFrom who?โ โFrom Tadhg.โ
There was a pause. โWhy did Tadhg have your phone?โ
โBecause I needed toย notย have it.โ โBecause?โ
I grimaced. โYou know why.โ
โJoe.โ She breathed heavily into the phone, and I didnโt have to be there to know there was a tremor running through her body. I knew because the
same tremor was running through mine. โYouโre really clean?โ โYeah, Molloy.โย For you.ย โI really am.โ
โThen what are we doing here? Why am I here and youโreย not?โ
โI need more time.โ
โTo do what?โ she snapped. โTo fuck around?โ
โTo get myself straightened out,โ I corrected gruffly, narrowing my eyes. โDonโt even fucking go there when youย knowย that Iโm not looking at anyone else.โ
โWell, if youโre clean, then why canโt we justโฆโ Stopping short, she blew out a shaky breath and said, โYou know what? Forget it. I wonโt beg you again. If youโre not calling to get back together, then hang up the phone.โ
โMolloy.โ
โI mean it, Joe. Donโt call me again. Not unless youโve changed your tune.โ
The line went dead, and I let my head fall back against the concrete wall. โFuck.โ
Breathing hard and fast, I resisted re-dialing her number and giving her
exactly what she wanted.
The only way I was able to stop myself from doing just that was with the knowledge that while she might want me, she certainly didnโt need me.
Not now. Not yet.
Not at all if I couldnโt get a handle on myself.
