Chapter no 1 – โ€ŒSTILL TRYING JOEY

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

โ€œYOUโ€™RE FIERCE QUIET, JOEY SON.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m grand, Tony.โ€

โ€œAre you sure? Youโ€™re as pale as a ghost and havenโ€™t had a whole pile to say for yourself all week.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all good.โ€

โ€œYou and Aoife havenโ€™tโ€ฆโ€ He let his words trail off, but kept his worried eyes on me, waiting for an explanation.

โ€œWeโ€™re grand, Tony,โ€ I fed him the lie he wanted to hear before turning my attention back to the ratchet in my hand. โ€œEverythingโ€™s grand.โ€

โ€œThank Jesus for that.โ€ Relief flashed in his eyes. โ€œThen you wouldnโ€™t happen to have any idea whatโ€™s after getting into her? Sheโ€™s walking around the house with a face like thunder.โ€

โ€œNo clue.โ€ย Liar.

โ€œReally?โ€ He scratched his jaw in confusion. โ€œYouโ€™re usually the first to know when thereโ€™s drama.โ€

โ€œThink she had a fight with Casey over the Christmas.โ€ โ€œDid she now?โ€

I couldnโ€™t explain why the words โ€˜we broke upโ€™ refused to come out of my mouth. Or worse, why I lied and placed the blame on her best friend instead, but I did it. โ€œYeah.โ€ I nodded, following through on my bullshit. โ€œI think I heard something about that.โ€

โ€œJaysus, it must have been one hell of a fight,โ€ he stated, watching me from the other side of the car we were working on. โ€œSheโ€™s been hysterical for days now. Crying herself to sleep most nights.โ€

Fuck.ย โ€œShe has?โ€ Her father nodded.

My heart sank into my ass. โ€œJesus.โ€

โ€œYou should have a word with her,โ€ he added, turning his attention back to the task at hand. โ€œShe listens to you. Get her to patch things up with young Casey before she floods the house with tears.โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ll, ah, Iโ€™ll call her after work,โ€ I managed to squeeze out, though it was hard to breathe let alone talk.

Because this was on me. Molloyโ€™s tears were on me.

This whole damn mess was a result of my inability to resist the pull of my fucked-up DNA.

Feeling like my heart was constricting to the point of explosion, I set the ratchet down and moved for the back door. โ€œIโ€™ll be back in five.โ€

โ€œPack those damn cigarettes in for the new year,โ€ he called after me, but his tone was jokey enough.

Either way, we both knew that I wasnโ€™t going to quit.

Not when I had already given up so much.

Slipping out back, I placed the cigarette balancing on my ear between my lips and grabbed a lighter from the pocket of my coveralls.

Sparking up, I inhaled a deep breath and sagged against the wall at my back, feeling a million different emotions rushing through me.

Exhaling a cloud of smoke, I fought an internal battle with myself toย notย throw in the towel and do exactly what I knew I would. In the end, it was only a matter of minutes before I grabbed my phone โ€“ the same phone that I had to pry from my brotherโ€™s fingers this morning.

Blowing out a frustrated breath, I unlocked the screen, declined another call from Shane, brought up the nameย Molloyย in my contacts, and pressed call.

She answered on the fourth ring but didnโ€™t greet me. I didnโ€™t blame her.

I didnโ€™t deserve to be greeted.

If anything, I deserved to be hung up on.

โ€œItโ€™s me,โ€ I said quietly, taking another drag of my smoke. โ€œCan you talk?โ€

The hustle and bustle in the background let me know that she was at work.

When it grew quieter on the other line, I knew she must have moved to someplace quiet.

โ€œOkay,โ€ she finally said down the line. โ€œI can hear you.โ€ โ€œAre you at work?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ she bit out, tone laced with venomous sarcasm. โ€œIโ€™m out on the town with my new boyfriend.โ€

Taking her bitchiness on the chin, I took another drag of my smoke before asking, โ€œAnd howโ€™s he treating you?โ€

โ€œA hell of a lot better than the last asshole I made the mistake of falling for,โ€ came her smart-ass response. โ€œWhat do you want, Joe?โ€

โ€œI justโ€ฆโ€ Shaking my head, I blew out a pained breath before saying, โ€œI wanted to check in on you.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œYou know why, Molloy.โ€ Shrugging helplessly, I concentrated on a spot of dirt on the path. โ€œI didnโ€™t flip a switch and turn my feelings offโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ she choked out, emotion overtaking her sarcasm. โ€œNot when I have three more hours at work to get through.โ€

Retracting my words, I bit back a pained growl and steered the conversation in another direction. โ€œTony said that youโ€™ve been crying.โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€ I shook my head. โ€œIt fucking guts me to hear that. I donโ€™t want you to cry, Molloy.โ€

โ€œWell, unfortunately, thatโ€™s usually what happens to a girl when her boyfriend sacks her off.โ€

โ€œStop.โ€ I flinched, hating both the words and the pain in her voice. โ€œI didnโ€™t sack you off.โ€

โ€œYou broke up with me, Joey,โ€ she replied, tone thick. โ€œYou can wrap it up as sweetly as you want, but in the end, thatโ€™s exactly what you did.โ€

โ€œI still love you.โ€

I heard her sudden intake of breath, but she didnโ€™t say anything for a long beat. โ€œDonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI fucking love you, Aoife Molloy,โ€ I repeated, focusing on an oil stain on the back wall of the garage. โ€œI always will.โ€

โ€œThen take it back.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€ I shook my head, feeling like my heart was splitting clean down the center. โ€œIโ€™m not good for you.โ€

All I wanted to do was sprint over to The Dinniman and wrap her up in my arms, but I couldnโ€™t afford to make another mistake with this girl.

Not when Iโ€™d already crushed her. โ€œAre you clean?โ€

I closed my eyes and nodded weakly. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œSince when?โ€

โ€œI havenโ€™t touched anything since that night.โ€ โ€œBecause youโ€™re turning over a new leaf?โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m fucking ashamed of myself,โ€ I came right out and told her.

โ€œOf what I exposed you to. How I treated you.โ€

There was a long stretch of silence, where I swear that I could hear the sound of my own heart thundering in my ears, before she spoke again. โ€œSo, two weeks without anything, huh?โ€

I nodded again. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ll be back in five,โ€ I heard her say. โ€œIโ€™m owed a cigarette breakโ€ฆ Yes, Julie, I know I donโ€™t smoke, but I cover for you at least seven

times a day when you take yours, so Iโ€™m having one.โ€ The line was muffled for a few moments before she returned. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™m back. Julieโ€™s just being a greedy bitch.โ€

โ€œPicking fights with co-workers, Molloy?โ€

โ€œNo more than usual.โ€ There was a bite to her tone that she didnโ€™t try to conceal. โ€œAnd Shane Holland? How many weeks have you beenย cleanย of him?โ€

โ€œThe same.โ€

โ€œHow can I believe you?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ I exhaled a heavy sigh. โ€œAll I have is my word.โ€

โ€œI want to believe you, Joe,โ€ she whispered down the line. โ€œSo badly.โ€

But you canโ€™t.ย โ€œI get it,โ€ I replied, roughly clearing my throat. โ€œWe both know that I havenโ€™t been the kind of fella you could put your faith in.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t call.โ€ The accusation was there in her voice. โ€œNot once.โ€

โ€œI couldnโ€™t.โ€ Grimacing in what felt like physical pain, I forced myself to give her my truth. โ€œI only got my phone back this morning.โ€

โ€œFrom who?โ€ โ€œFrom Tadhg.โ€

There was a pause. โ€œWhy did Tadhg have your phone?โ€

โ€œBecause I needed toย notย have it.โ€ โ€œBecause?โ€

I grimaced. โ€œYou know why.โ€

โ€œJoe.โ€ She breathed heavily into the phone, and I didnโ€™t have to be there to know there was a tremor running through her body. I knew because the

same tremor was running through mine. โ€œYouโ€™re really clean?โ€ โ€œYeah, Molloy.โ€ย For you.ย โ€œI really am.โ€

โ€œThen what are we doing here? Why am I here and youโ€™reย not?โ€

โ€œI need more time.โ€

โ€œTo do what?โ€ she snapped. โ€œTo fuck around?โ€

โ€œTo get myself straightened out,โ€ I corrected gruffly, narrowing my eyes. โ€œDonโ€™t even fucking go there when youย knowย that Iโ€™m not looking at anyone else.โ€

โ€œWell, if youโ€™re clean, then why canโ€™t we justโ€ฆโ€ Stopping short, she blew out a shaky breath and said, โ€œYou know what? Forget it. I wonโ€™t beg you again. If youโ€™re not calling to get back together, then hang up the phone.โ€

โ€œMolloy.โ€œ

โ€œI mean it, Joe. Donโ€™t call me again. Not unless youโ€™ve changed your tune.โ€

The line went dead, and I let my head fall back against the concrete wall. โ€œFuck.โ€

Breathing hard and fast, I resisted re-dialing her number and giving her

exactly what she wanted.

The only way I was able to stop myself from doing just that was with the knowledge that while she might want me, she certainly didnโ€™t need me.

Not now. Not yet.

Not at all if I couldnโ€™t get a handle on myself.
