SABRINA LOOKS LIKEย she wants to crawl under a rock. Or maybe jump out one of the many windows in our apartment. I know she doesnโt like being put on the spot, and I probably wouldnโt even blame her if she decided to flee.
But whatever my mother said to her before I came homeโand I intend on finding out every last word that was spokenโhas clearly given Sabrina a dose of courage. She frowns briefly at my mom, then turns to me and meets my gaze straight on.
โI love you,โ she confirms.
I take a step closer. โSince when?โ
โSince fucking always.โ When my mom winces, Sabrina gives her a sheepish look. โSorry. Tuck and I are still going through a language transition. We donโt always remember to say โfudgeโ and โsugar,โ okay?โ She lifts an eyebrow. โAre you going to lecture me about that too?โ
Momโs lips twitch as if sheโs trying not to laugh. โNo,โ she says faintly. โIโm not. In factโฆโ She makes a big show of slipping into her winter boots and coat. โI think Iโll take a walk around the block. I love looking at all the snow.โ
โBullshit,โ I cough into my hands. My mom despises winter and we both know it.
She glares at me on her way to the door. โPlease speed up this language transition, John.โ And then sheโs gone, and Sabrina and I exchange grins.
The humor doesnโt last long, though. โIโm sorry,โ Sabrina tells me.
โFor what?โ I bridge the distance between us and plant both hands on her slender hips.
โI didnโt mean to be rude to your mother. Itโs justโฆshe said someโฆ hurtful things.โ She holds up her hand when she sees my dark expression.
โTheyโre not worth repeating, and I have a feeling she wonโt say that kind of stuff anymore.โ
I nod slowly. โYou mean now that she knows you love me?โ โYeah.โ
I search her beautiful face for a moment before smiling again. โSince fucking always, huh?โ
โWell, maybe not always,โ she concedes. โI wonโt lie, Tuck. That connection you talked about when we first met? About our eyes meeting across the room and how you felt something in that moment?โ Sabrina sighs. โAll I felt was lust that night.โ
โI know.โ
โBut itโs not just lust anymore. It hasnโt been about that for a long time.โ โWhen?โ I canโt help but tease. โWhen did you figure out youโre madly
in love with me?โ
โI donโt know. Maybe on that ridiculous double date? Maybe when you took care of me when I thought I was sick? When you got me the briefcase? When you punched out Ray in my honor?โ Each word is lined with wonder. โI donโt know exactly when, Tuck, but I know I love you.โ
A lump rises in my throat. โWhy didnโt you say anything sooner?โ
โBecause I was scared. And because I wasnโt sure if you actually loved me backโโ
โAre you kidding me? I lost my head for you the second we met. You know that.โ
She stubbornly sticks out her chin. โI figured you were thinking with your dick. Guys do that.โ
Iโll give her that. But Iโve never been one of those guys.
โAnd then I got pregnant, and I was worried you were confusing your feelings for the baby with your feelings for me.โ She rakes a hand through her silky dark hair. โBut the biggest thing isโฆwasโฆthat IโฆIโฆโ
I stroke her hips. โYou what?โ
Tears cling to her long eyelashes. โI canโt be the person who ruins your life. I already turned you into a father earlier than you wanted to be one. I didnโt want love to complicate everything. I didnโt wantโฆโ She blinks rapidly. โI didnโt want you to wake up one day and hate me.โ
I growl. โHate you? Jesus, woman.โ Hauling her tight against me, I bury my face in her neck. โYou still donโt get it, do you?โ
โGet what?โ she asks in a small voice.
โYou. Me. Us. This.โ I spit out words as they pop into my head. โYouโre the one, Sabrina. Thereโs no one else for me in this world, nobody but you. If I was driving and saw you on the side of the road? You better believe Iโd rip out a spark plug or two if it meant getting to spend even five seconds in your presence. Youโre the fucking one.โ
Her breath hitches.
โEven if you didnโt give me Jamieโwhich is the greatest goddamn gift in the world, by the wayโIโd still want to be with you. Even if you hadnโt said you loved me back, Iโd take whatever scraps you were willing to give me as long as I could be with you. I donโt give a shit if that makes me patheticโโ
โYouโre not pathetic.โ Her expression is fierce now. โYou could never be pathetic.โ
โI wouldnโt care if you thought I was.โ I cup her face in my hands and wipe away her tears with my thumbs. โYouโre the best thing thatโs ever happened to me, Sabrina James.โ
โNo.โ She smiles. โYouโre the best thing thatโs ever happened toย me.โ
Before I can lean down to kiss her, a hearty cry wails through the apartment.
โAndย that,โ I murmur, โis the best thing thatโs ever happened to either one of us.โ
A tear breaks free from her lashes and slides down her cheek. โYes. It
is.โ
Jamie lets out another bloodcurdling shriek, and we both hurry toward
the corridor that leads to the bedrooms. Right outside the nursery door, though, I stop Sabrina by taking her hand.
โShe can cry for five more seconds,โ I decide. โWeโre trying out that self-soothing thing anyway, remember?โ
Her lips quiver with humor. โI thought you were against it.โ She deepens her voice and gives it a drawl to mimic me. โโI ainโt gonna let my princess suffer, darlinโ. What kind of father does that?โโ
My jaw drops in outrage. โI did not sayย ainโt.โ โYou may as well have.โ
Rolling my eyes, I tug her toward me and capture her bottom lip between my teeth. Sabrina moans in response, which wakes up my cock.
โI wanted a kiss,โ I grumble against her mouth. โNot sex noises.โ
โToo bad. Youโre getting both.โ She proceeds to stick her tongue in my mouth and kiss the shit out of me until weโre both making sex noises.
When we break apart, weโre both laughing and breathing hard, and Jamie is still screaming her displeasure to anyone whoโll listen.
โCโmon, letโs go wait on the princess,โ Sabrina says with a smile.
She gives my ass a playful smack, and then we walk into the nursery, hand-in-hand, to see our daughter.
