โ€ŒSTEPPING OUT AND STEPPING UP

NOVEMBER 30TH 2004 JOEY

โ€œMAM.โ€

Standing in the doorway of her bedroom, I resisted the urge to walk over there and tip the mattress and force her to get out of that goddamn bed.

By some small grace of God, the old man had walked out on our mother three nights ago. He declared that we could all burn to death for all he cared because heโ€™d found himself a real woman.

If I could have packed his bags and walked him to the door, I would have.

Instead, Iโ€™d been preoccupied with picking my mother up off the kitchen floor.

Sheโ€™d taken to the bed soon after and hadnโ€™t left it since.

โ€œYou have to get up,โ€ I told her. โ€œIโ€™ve the rest of them sent off to school, but Sean is downstairs. Nannyโ€™s in Beara with Aunty Alice so she canโ€™t take him, and I canโ€™t miss school again.โ€ Iโ€™d already missed yesterday. โ€œPlease, Mam.โ€

Nothing.

โ€œI have to get my project sorted for Construction.โ€ Not even a twitch.

โ€œItโ€™s worth over fifty percent of my leaving cert exam.โ€ Silence.

โ€œMam!โ€ I said it louder this time, hoping by some small miracle that I would be able to somehow get through to her โ€“ wherever the fuck she was in that head of hers. โ€œYouโ€™re better off without him. Do you hear me? You are better off. Let him fuck off with that barmaid from town. Sheโ€™s his problem now.โ€

Blowing out a frustrated growl when she didnโ€™t so much as flinch, I walked into the room I hated most in this house and forced my legs to walk over to the bed.

โ€œMam.โ€

Crouching down in front of her, I tapped on her lifeless hand. Nothing.

Dead blue eyes stared back at nothing. I knew she was alive.

I could see her chest rising and falling, but that was the only sign. Other than that, she was a glorified zombie.

โ€œMam, please.โ€ Voice softening, I reached over and tucked her hair behind her ear. โ€œYou have to get back up.โ€

A lone tear trickled down her cheek.

It was the only response she gave to tell me that she could hear me. โ€œOkay, Mam.โ€ Sighing heavily, I pulled the covers over her frail

shoulders to keep her warm, and then I headed for the door. โ€œIโ€™ll stay home and mind Sean.โ€

โ€œHOW IS SHE?โ€ were the first words that came out of Shannonโ€™s mouth when she walked through the front door after school. โ€œDid she come out?โ€

โ€œHeard the toilet flush twice, but thatโ€™s about it,โ€ I called over my shoulder, as I tried to save the mince from burning the pan, having made the rare mistake of forgetting I left the ring on. โ€œShit, fuck, shit.โ€œ

โ€œNice language,โ€ Tadhg mocked from the kitchen table. โ€œShould I learn how to spell those words too, Joe?โ€

โ€œJust concentrate on your homework and less of the snark,โ€ I shot back, eyeing my sister to come save me.

Smiling, Shannon walked over to the stove and nudged me out of the way. โ€œNeed a hand, Joe?โ€

โ€œPlease.โ€ Tossing the spaghetti smeared tea-towel over her shoulder, I scooped up the toddler who, I was fairly sure was contemplating taking a dump in his pants and headed for the bathroom. โ€œDoes Seany have poos for Joe?โ€

โ€œNo poos, o-ee.โ€

Little liar.

โ€œGo on and check for me,โ€ I ordered, setting him down in front of the potty in the utility room. โ€œGood lad yourself.โ€

โ€œHey, Joe? Whatโ€™s a click-or-is?โ€ Ollie called from the other side of the kitchen table.

โ€œThe fuck?โ€ Gaping, I stalked back to where he had his homework book open. โ€œWhere did you see that word, Ollie?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t see it,โ€ he explained innocently, smiling up at me. โ€œI heard it.โ€

Jesus Christ.ย โ€œWhereโ€™d you hear that, Ols?โ€ โ€œIn the sexual education talk at school.โ€ย What the absolute fuck?

I looked to Shannon for help, but she had turned redder than the bolognaise she was stirring.

At a loss, I turned to Tadhg. โ€œWhatโ€™s this Iโ€™m hearing about sexual education?โ€

Tadhg shrugged. โ€œNo clue, Joe. I was away with the schoolโ€™s hurling team.โ€ He grinned proudly. โ€œWe won, and I scored two goals.โ€

โ€œNice.โ€ Accepting his high-five, I quickly turned my attention back to spawn number five. โ€œYouโ€™re in fourth class, Ollie. In primary school. You

donโ€™t need to be taking any sex education class.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s cunt-pulse-hairy.โ€

โ€œCompulsory, you dope,โ€ Tadhg growled. โ€œJesus Christ.โ€

Jesus Christ, I needed to get this kid into speech and language. โ€œIโ€™m going to have to call your school,โ€ I told them both. โ€œYouโ€™re too young to be learning about this kind of thing.โ€

โ€œBut what is it, Joe?โ€ โ€œWhatโ€™s what?โ€

โ€œA click-or-is?โ€

Shannon choked on her own spit behind me.

โ€œWell, uh, itโ€™s like you said, itโ€™s something you click,โ€ I muttered, having no idea what to do, or how to handle the kinds of questions these kids continued to throw at me.

โ€œLike a button?โ€

I nodded. โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s right.โ€ โ€œWhere?โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s what?โ€

โ€œThe click-or-is, silly,โ€ Ollie said, and then frowned. โ€œTeacher said that only girls get a click-or-is, but thatโ€™s not fair, is it, Joe? How comes they get a secret button, and we donโ€™t?โ€

โ€œO-ee poos!โ€ Sean hollered from the utility room, and I had never been so relieved to clean shit up than I was in this moment.

โ€œComing, Seany,โ€ I called back before saying, โ€œOls, we can pick this conversation back up when youโ€™re a teenager.โ€
