โDO YOU THINK THEYโLL LEAVE ME ALONE NOW?
OCTOBER 18TH 2004 JOEY
โHOW ARE YOU FEELING NOW, SHAN?โย I asked, as I sat
opposite my sister in the chipper, and watched as she toyed with the same chip that sheโd been holding for ten minutes. โAny better?โ
โIโm okay, Joe,โ she replied, voice barely more than a whisper. Her eyes glazed over as she clearly drifted in and out of her thoughts.
She wasnโt eating again, and I was fucking terrified of letting it go to a stage where she couldnโt come back from it.
I knew all about falling over the edge of bullshit, and I didnโt want that for my sister.
โJust eat another five chips,โ I coaxed, pushing the tray closer to her. โI wonโt ask for any more than five.โ
โIโm not anorexic, Joe,โ she explained weakly, tucking her hair behind her ears. โIโm justโฆIโm justโฆโ she exhaled a ragged breath before whispering, โnot well.โ
Yeah, I knew how that felt.
When I didnโt feel well, I self-medicated.
When my sister didnโt feel well, she starved herself half to death. Her reaction to stress was as real to her as mine was to me.
But that didnโt make it easy for me to sit back and watch, especially when everything inside of me demanded that I fix this.
That I fix her.
I couldnโt blame her for feeling the way she did.
On the way to school this morning, sheโd been jumped by Ciara Maloney and Hannah Daly.
I wasnโt with her, because Iโd hung back to have a smoke with a few of the lads from my road.
I had never felt so goddamn helpless in my life, when I finally caught up with her and saw her getting attacked.
They were accusing her of being with Ciaraโs fella.
Shannon.
The same Shannon who had never glanced sideways at the opposite sex, let alone robbed someoneโs fella.
It was beyond absurd, and I couldnโt hit them to get them off her.
I couldnโt do a damn thing, because as much as I willing to return the favor to their brothers and boyfriends, they were nowhere to be seen in the moment, and I would rather slit my wrists than put hands on a female.
Those bitches knew that which meant that all I could do was drag her out from beneath them and shield her small body with mine.
โDo you think theyโll leave me alone now?โ she asked, thankfully taking a bite of a chip. โDo you think thatโll be the end of it now that weโve made a statement to the Gards?โ
No, I didnโt think it was going to be the end of it, but I certainly wasnโt about to tell my fragile baby sister that.
โYeah, Shan.โ Offering her a reassuring smile, I took a bite of the burger sheโd left untouched. โThe Gards are going to go over to Ciaraโs house and give her a right good talking to.โย Which wouldnโt work, just like last time.ย โItโs going to get better. I promise.โ
The minute the wordย promiseย came out of my mouth, Shannon smiled at me, and I knew that Iโd fed that demon of insecurity that lived inside of her just enough to keep it at bay for a while.
โTalk to me about something else,โ she said then, thankfully eating another chip. โSomething thatโs not depressing.โ
Our whole world was one big depression.
โLike what, Shan?โ
โYour girlfriend,โ she said and smiled knowingly. โAoife.โ
โAoife,โ I mused, swallowing another bite of my burger. โWhat do you want to know?โ
โSheโs very beautiful, Joe.โ โYeah, I know, Shan.โ
โLike seriously stunning,โ she offered. โThe boys in third year are always talking about her.โ
โThe boys in third year have good taste.โ โHow long have you been together?โ
โA few months.โ โIs it serious?โ
โDefine serious?โ
โAre you exclusive?โ โYeah, we are.โ
โSo, no other girls tucked away to one side?โ โNo.โ I shook my head. โNo other girls.โ
โWow, Joe.โ She waggled her brows. โIt kind of sounds like you might be inย looooove?โ
โI am.โ
โOh my god.โ Her eyes bulged. โI was half expecting you to deny it.โ โThereโs no point.โ I shrugged. โI love the girl. It is what it is.โ โWhatโs it like?โ
โWhatโs what like, Shan?โ
โBeing in love,โ she sighed, resting her chin on her small hand, thoroughly invested in the conversation now. โWhat does it feel like?โ
I cocked a brow. โOf all the things we could talk about, you want to talk about feelings?โ
โPlease,โ she begged. โJust humor me.โ
โAlright.โ Shifting around awkwardly, I took a sip from my coke, while I thought about it for a moment. โItโs painful.โ
Her eyes widened to saucers. โPainful?โ
โYeah.โ I nodded. โBut itโs the kind of pain thatโsย worthย feeling, you know?โ
She blew out a breath. โReally?โ
โItโs like you know youโre about to get your ass handed to you by exposing yourself to this person, and you know that youโre fucking around on the edge of something that could potentially break and ruin you, but itโs just so damn thrilling, so consumingly addicting, that youโre willing to take the risk and do just about anything to be with that person.โ
โWow,โ she mused in a dreamy tone. โThatโs so great, Joe.โ
โItโs actually pretty terrible,โ I offered dryly. โYou should avoid it like the plague.โ
Shannon laughed and then asked, โSo, is Aoife the reasonโฆโ Clearing her throat, she said in a much quieter tone, โyou decided to, ah, well, you knowโฆโ she cupped her hands around her mouth before whispering, โdonโt hang out with Shane Holland and those guys?โ
Sheโs certainly the reason why Iโve become so good at hiding it.
โYeah, Shan,โ I said, feeling like a piece of shit. โShe is.โ
