Chapter no 29

Saving 6 (Boys of Tommen, 3)

โ€ŒCALLING A TRUCE

FEBRUARY 14TH 2002 AOIFE

FIFTY-EIGHT MINUTES.

Thatโ€™s how long the shower motor hummed above me. Thatโ€™s how long it took for Joey to tame the beast.

Another ten minutes passed before he finally emerged from the bathroom.

Re-dressed in his school uniform, with his blond hair cocking up in forty different directions, and his cheeks noticeably flushed, he stepped into the kitchen, towel in hand. โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œBetter?โ€ I asked, unable to suppress the laugh that escaped me, as I flipped a piece of French toast in the pan. โ€œFeelingย relieved?โ€

โ€œFunny,โ€ Joey growled, but the reluctant smile on his face assured me that he wasnโ€™t mad.

โ€œDid it go down?โ€

โ€œEventually,โ€ he admitted, with a wolfish smile. โ€œI thought I was going to have to go to A&E for a while there.โ€

โ€œImagine if you had,โ€ I snorted, switching off the hob and plating up the French toast. โ€œWe would have needed to hitch a trailer onto the taxi to cart that stallion between your legs.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m never going to hear the end of this, am I?โ€

โ€œNo, probably not,โ€ I agreed, still laughing. โ€œHere.โ€ I handed him a plate stacked with my homemade goodness. โ€œYou need to replenish your life force.โ€

โ€œYou cooked all by yourself.โ€ His brows rose in surprise. โ€œIโ€™m impressed.โ€

โ€œI have a pretty decent home economics partner who taught me a thing or two,โ€ I replied, moving to the table with my own plate. โ€œHeโ€™s an asshole, but he knows his way around the kitchen.โ€

โ€œSo, this home economics partner,โ€ Joey said, following me over to the table. โ€œIs he your friend?โ€

My heart flipped in my chest. โ€œHe was.โ€ โ€œWas?โ€

Nodding, I sank down on my chair and took a bite or toast. โ€œHe used to be my best friend.โ€

โ€œWhat changed?โ€ โ€œWe had a fight.โ€ โ€œIs that right?โ€

โ€œUh-huh. He broke my heart.โ€

Pain flicked in Joeyโ€™s eyes. โ€œMolloy.โ€ โ€œJoke.โ€

Relief flooded his features when he swallowed my lie. โ€œWell, I hear this partner of yours feels shit about the fight the two of you had.โ€

โ€œDoes he now?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Joey nodded. โ€œHe misses his friend.โ€

My heart flipped. โ€œHe should miss her. Sheโ€™s amazing.โ€ He smirked. โ€œHe wants her back.โ€

โ€œShe never left.โ€ I swallowed deeply. โ€œShe just needed a time out.โ€ โ€œGood.โ€ He nodded. โ€œBecause if she did leave, he wouldnโ€™t like it.โ€ โ€œHe wouldnโ€™t?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ His green eyes locked on mine from across the table. โ€œHe wouldnโ€™t.โ€

Exhaling a shaky breath, I reached across the table and laid my hand, palm up. โ€œNice moves.โ€

He stared at my hand for a long beat before slowly placing his hand on top of mine. โ€œNice everything.โ€
