FEBRUARY 1ST 2002 AOIFE
MR. NYHAN COULD SUSPENDย me for walking out of detention if he wanted to.
Hell, he could threaten me with expulsion, and it wouldnโt matter a damn because there was no way that I was ever willingly walking back into that classroom.
I made it to the carpark before I broke down.
Releasing a pained cry, I slumped down on the concrete footpath and dropped my head in my hands, crying hard and ugly.
I hated him.
I wanted to hate him so much. Iย neededย to hateย him.
You need to stop loving him firstโฆ
โAoife,โ a familiar voice said, and I stiffened.
No, no, no, not nowโฆ
โGo away.โ โWhatโs wrong?โ โI saidย go away!โ
Doing the complete opposite of what I wanted, Paul sank down on the footpath beside me. โWhatโs wrong?โ
โNothing.โ Sniffling, I reached up to wipe my eyes with the back of my hand. โIโm fine.โ
โDid he hurt you earlier?โ
โNo.โ I sniffled again. โI hurt myself.โ โHow?โ
I gave my heart to the wrong person.ย โIt doesnโt matter.โ โIt clearly does.โ
โJust leave it alone, okay?โ โTalk to me, Aoife.โ
โI canโt.โ
โYou can.โ
โYou donโt want to hear this, Paul.โ โTry me.โ
โI like him, okay!โ I heard myself choke out. โIย likeย him.โ I felt Paul stiffen beside me. โJoey.โ
Exhaling a ragged breath, I nodded once and then dropped my head in my hands, feeling a flurry of guilt and relief. โIโm really sorry.โ
โSince when?โ
Since day one.ย โI donโt know.โ
โWere you with him?โ he asked quietly. I shook my head. โNo.โ
He eyed me uncertainly. โNo?โ
โNo,โ I confirmed, swallowing deeply. โNo.โ
He stared at me for a long moment before releasing a shaky breath. โAt least that.โ
โYeah,โ I croaked out.ย At least that.
โDo you still care about me?โ โYes,โ I replied honestly. โDo you care about him?โ
I didnโt answer his question.
I couldnโt.
I wasnโt that cruel.
โDo you like him more than you like me?โ โItโs different.โ
โSo, what are you telling me, Aoif?โ His eyes searched mine and I was incredibly impressed with how calm he was remaining. It actually made this harder because he was being the sweet guy he was when we first met, which made me feel like the biggest dick in Ballylaggin. โAre you saying that you want to be with him?โ
โNo.โ I shook my head. โThatโs not going to happen.โ
โI donโt understand.โ His brows furrowed. โIf you havenโt been with him and donโt plan on being with him then why?โ
โI just needed to tell you, okay?โ I wiped my cheek and exhaled shakily. โI needed to get it off my chest.โ
Paul was quiet for a very long time before speaking again. โI need to tell you something.โ
โIs it going to hurt?โ โIt could.โ
โAs bad as what I just told you hurt?โ โMaybe a bit worse.โ
Oh god.ย โIs it about those rumors?โ โSort of.โ
Exhaling a shaky breath, I nodded for him to continue.
โI, ahโฆโ Exhaling a pained breath, he looked down at his feet and said, โI slept with someone.โ
Well crap.
โYou lost your virginity?โ That hurt worse than I had expected it to. โTo who?โ
โA girl from Tommen.โ
โSo it was true.โ My breath caught in my chest, and I forced myself to remain calm and show him the same decency that he had shown me. โWhatโs her name?โ
โBella.โ He dropped his head in his hands and groaned, โBella Wilkinson.โ
โWhen?โ
โAfterย you broke up with me at Halloween.โ
โHow long after?โ I asked, surprising myself with how level my tone was.
โAoife.โ
โHow long, Paul?โ โDoes it matter?โ
โI gave you my truth.โ โThat same night.โ โAt the disco?โ
He nodded once.
โWow,โ I breathed, shoulders sagging. Well, that was just perfect.
Joey was fucking Danielle, Paul was fucking this Bella, meanwhile, I was fucking myself over.
Perfect.
โIโm sorry, Aoife,โ he hurried to say. โIt was a huge mistake. It meant nothing, and I honest to God felt like the worst piece of shit on the planet afterwards.โ
โWas she blonde?โ โHuh?โ
โBlonde,โ I croaked out. โWas she blonde?โ
โNo,โ he replied, tone gruff. โShe had black hair.โ โAt least that.โ
โIโm so sorry, Aoif.โ
โYeah.โ I dropped my head on his shoulder and sighed. โMe, too, Paul.โ โCan I ask you a question?โ
I nodded.
โWhy havenโt you?โ โWhy havenโt I what?โ
โYou and him.โ He cleared his throat. โWe were off. You had the perfect opportunity to get him out of your system.โ
โGet him out of my system?โ โYou know what I mean.โ
I turned to look at him but didnโt have an answer. โItโs not going to happen,โ I offered instead, physically recoiling at the memory of hearing those godawful words coming out of Joeyโs mouth. All mixed with the memory of seeing him with her that night. โI need to get over him.โ
โWell, I donโt want things to be over between us,โ he said, reaching over to take my hand in his. โI care a lot about you, Aoif.โ
โI care about you, too,โ I replied, feeling numb.
โThis is just a bad patch,โ he continued, lacing our fingers together. โWe can come through it. We always do.โ
โHow?โ I whispered. โHow can we make this work?โ And more importantly, why should we?
โI suppose by telling each other the truth,โ he offered quietly. โToday was a good start.โ
โI donโt know if Iโm invested in this,โ I admitted weakly. โMy head is all over the place, Paul.โ
โWeโll figure it out,โ he replied, wrapping his arm around my shoulder. โItโll be okay.โ
No, it wonโt.
