Chapter no 22

Saving 6 (Boys of Tommen, 3)

โ€ŒYOU HAVE A BABY

JANUARY 7TH 2002 AOIFE

JOEY WASย late to school on our first day back after Christmas break. When he finally showed up, fifteen minutes into the third class of the day, the circles under his eyes had my anxiety rising at a rapid pace.

โ€œJesus,โ€ I whispered, when he slumped down beside me. โ€œYou look like shit.โ€

โ€œThanks,โ€ he grumbled, dropping setting his elbows on our desk and dropping his head in his hands. โ€œYou look like dinner.โ€

I flamed with heat at the compliment. โ€œThanks.โ€ โ€œNo problem.โ€

โ€œWhat happened to you?โ€ Glancing around class, I checked to see that our teacher was looking elsewhere before leaning in close and whispering, โ€œAre you high again?โ€

โ€œNo, Molloy,โ€ he mumbled, slumped over our desk. โ€œNot high. Just tired.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause I havenโ€™t closed an eye all night.โ€ โ€œAgain, why?โ€

โ€œBecauseโ€”โ€œ he paused to yawn. โ€œSeanโ€™s cutting a tooth.โ€ โ€œSean?โ€ I stared blankly at his head. โ€œWhoโ€™s Sean?โ€ โ€œHeโ€™s my babyโ€”โ€œ

โ€œYourย baby?โ€ I interrupted, eyes widening.

โ€œBrother.โ€ He lifted his head to glare at me. โ€œGive me some credit, will ya?โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€ I winced. โ€œI justโ€ฆI didnโ€™t know that your mother had another baby.โ€

โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œWhen?โ€

โ€œHalloween.โ€

โ€œHalloween?โ€ My mouth fell open. โ€œJoe, we legit talk every day and you never once mentioned that your mam had another baby.โ€

โ€œWhy would I?โ€ he asked, confusion etched on his face.

โ€œBecause thatโ€™s the sort of thing that friends tell each other,โ€ I explained. โ€œFriends tell each other personal details like that.โ€

โ€œMolloy, my mam had another baby.โ€

I rolled my eyes. โ€œNot two months after the event.โ€ He shrugged in response.

โ€œSo, tell me about Sean?โ€ I asked, resting my elbow on the desk, and twisting sideways to face him.

โ€œWhatโ€™s to tell?โ€ Joey replied, mirroring my actions. โ€œHeโ€™s small, heโ€™s cute, he shits everywhere, and he screams the house down.โ€

โ€œAnd he kept you up last night crying?โ€

โ€œI told you,โ€ he growled defensively. โ€œHeโ€™s cutting a tooth. Itโ€™s not his fault.โ€

โ€œI know that,โ€ I coaxed, resting my hand on his forearm. โ€œI wasnโ€™t blaming him. I was just thinking that the walls of your house must be paper thin if he kept you up all night.โ€

Joey looked at me for a long time before shaking his head. โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked. โ€œWhat does that look mean?โ€

โ€œNothing.โ€ โ€œLiar.โ€

โ€œMaybe Iโ€™ll tell you in another two months.โ€

I bit back a smile. โ€œYou look like you could use a pick-me-up.โ€ โ€œYeah, I know, but I donโ€™t get paid until Friday.โ€

โ€œI was talking about chocolate, Joe.โ€ โ€œDo you have some?โ€

โ€œI always have some.โ€
