OCTOBER 10TH 2000
JOEY
DONโT ASKย me how it had happened but sitting on my bossโs couch in front of a roaring fire, with a full stomach and an empty plate on my lap, with his daughterโs shoulder touching mine, was exactly how I found myself ending what had, otherwise, been a very shitty day.
Not only had I cooked for the girl, but she had somehow wrangled me into bringing in buckets of coal and slack, and lighting the fire for her, too.
Persuasion was certainly a skill that Molloy had honed to perfection.
Knowing that I shouldnโt be here, but not wanting to eat and run like a prick, I decided on half an hour being a reasonable amount to time to linger.
โRight.โ When the thirty minutes was up, I set my plate down on the arm of the couch and slapped my thighs. โIโm going home.โ
โNo, youโre not,โ she grumbled, hooking her arm through mine.
โMolloy.โ
โNo.โ Shifting closer, she rested her cheek on my shoulder and returned her attention to the film playing on the television. โNow shush.โ
โI canโt be here when your parents get home,โ I argued, trying and failing to pry my arm free from her freakishly strong hold.
โWhy not?โ
โBecause your dad will flip the fuck out.โ
โNo, he wonโt,โ she scoffed. โWeโre friends, Joe. Iโm allowed to have friends over anytime I want.โ
โWeโre not friends, Molloy. And stop snuggling me.โ
โFriends snuggle.โ
โFriends do not fucking snuggle.โ
โI snuggle with Casey all the time.โ
โWell, I can assure you that I have never snuggled with Podge.โ
โThen you can practice with me.โ Shifting closer, she curled up in a small ball, and burrowed her head under my arm. โSee. Youโre already a pro.โ
โOkay, how is this normal?โ I demanded, glaring at my arm that she had somehow managed to drape over her shoulders. โYouโre a real slick mover, arenโt ya?โ
โJust chill, Joe,โ she coaxed, resting her head against my chest now, as she draped her arm over my stomach. โWatch the film.โ
โI donโt watch films.โ
โYes, you do.โ
โNo, I donโt.โ
โWell, you do now.โ
โFine.โ I blew out a frustrated breath. โWhatโs the film called?โ
โItโs a grisly horror calledย Wrong Turnย about this group of twenty-something-year-olds who take a wrong turn and end up getting hunted by these really creepy cannibal people. Itโs all blood and gore, with minimal sexy time, but itโs a good movie.โ
โKind of like how I took a wrong fucking turn tonight and ended up in a nightmare,โ I drawled sarcastically. โNot quite as grisly as your film, but once my boss gets home and sees me snuggling his daughter, Iโm sure itโll be a bloodbath.โ
โListen here, Joey Lynch.โ Sitting upright, she grabbed my chin and turned my face to look straight at her. โI saw you first. Youโreย myย friend, not his. So, stop worrying about my dad, and start focusing on me.โ
โTechnically, your dad saw me firstโโ
โYouโreย mine, okay?โ
โIโm not yours, but whatever.โ Huffing out a breath, I attempted to fold my arms across my chest, only for Molloy to loudly clear her throat expectantly. โIโm here, like you want, Iโm staying for the fucking film, like you want, but I draw the line atย snuggling.โ
โSnuggle me.โ
โNo.โ
โDo it.โ
โItโs not happening, Molloy.โ
โSnuggle me, Joey.โ
โI said no.โ
โSnuggle me or Iโll scream.โ
โFor fuckโs sake, fine,โ I snapped, lifting my arm up for her to nestle into my side. โThere. Weโreย snuggling. Are you happy now?โ
โI will be,โ she cackled, shifting closer to drape her long legs over my lap. โOnce you do one more thing for me.โ
โOh Jesus, what?โ
โTell me that weโre friends.โ
โMolloy.โ
โSay it, Joe.โ
โWhy?โ
โBecause it matters.โ
โTo who?โ
โTo me.โ
Jesus Christ.ย Shifting uncomfortably, I let my shoulders sag before mumbling, โWeโre friends.โ
โWhat was that?โ
โWeโreย friends.โ
She laughed. โI was hoping for something more along the lines of โAoife, youโre my dearest, sexiest, most lovable, bestest friend in the whole wide worldโ.โ
โDonโt push your luck.โ
โBut Iโm your favorite, right?โ With a teasing lilt to her voice, she said, โYour favorite friend?โ
โYes, fine! Whatever. Christ,โ I grumbled, rolling my eyes. โYouโre my favorite friend, with my favorite legs.โ
โWell, now see, that wasnโt so hard, was it?โ she laughed, reaching up to pat my cheek. โAnd just so you know, Joe?โ She leaned in close and pressed a kiss to my cheek. โYouโreย myย favorite friend, with my favorite everything.โ
Well shit.
